- HOW TO HANG A BIG CHANDELIER ALL BY YOURSELF
1. Before you begin, make sure the power to the electrical box is turned off at the breaker panel (usually located in the basement of most homes).
2. Attach a crossbar with nipple screwed into the hole in the middle the cross bar to the electrical box.
3. Now here is trick. You need to remove the screw collar loop from the chain. To do that, just pry open one of the chain links. Even if you’re not very strong, you can do that using 2 large pliers.
4. Screw the screw collar loop onto the nipple.
5. On the chandelier, pull the wires and the chain first through the ring (known as the collar) and then through the canopy.
6. Make sure to hold on to the chain and attach it to the screw collar loop via a link that you had pried open so that you can hook it onto the screw collar loop (or in my case to the closed link that is attached to the screw collar loop).
7. Next push the wires through the nipple so that they come out the other end. Normally, this is easy to do because a nipple that is about 2 ½ inches long suitable, but if you have a medallion or a thick canopy, you may need a nipple that is longer. (Sometimes, it helps to tape together the ends of the wires to make it easier to push them through the nipple.
8. Connect the wires from the chandelier to the house wires in the light box. Strip the wires if needed, and connect the hot wire (smooth wire) from the chandelier (you might want to mark the hot wire with a black marker or tape) to the black wire from the electrical box. Attach the neutral wire (ribbed wire) from the chandelier to the neutral, white wire from the electrical box. Finally, connect the bare wire from the chandelier to the bare copper ground wire from the electrical box.
9. Push in the wires into the electrical box and put the canopy on and screw the collar onto the screw collar loop to hold the canopy in place.
10. Lastly, close the chain link that had been pried open.

Well done! That way od spreading the chain links away from each other (instead of pushing them up/down apart) is exactly how jewelry makers open and close links of jewelry chain. Nice to see how to support chandelier while connecting the wires!

Hi, great videos! I have some questions since I'd be installing a chandelier and ceiling medallion soon. Let's say I do not want mine hanging from a chain, I want the canopy as close as possible to the ceiling. However based on how the medallion adds additional distance from the ceiling, am I right to assume that even in the best scenario I'm gonna need at least a couple of chain links? Or is there a way I could do without any chain links at all? (which would be my preference). Thanks!
Using the chain links allows you to hang a heavy light by yourself. You don't need to use any chain links if you can get someone to hold up the light while you are trying to connect the wires or find some way to support the light while you are trying to connect the wires. Sometimes I raise an adjustable ladder to come up just under the light to support it, but it's a little bit of a juggling act. I hope that answered your question.
