Another top lens for the Alpha 1 is the very versatile 100-400mm GM. It is compact, light-weight and high-quality. It can be used for portraits, sports, bird photography and awesome macros.
Thanks, I agree after 44+ years as a pro shooter using the best from several brands, the 135mm GM is the sharpest lens I have ever used, period and my favorite lens of all time. . Like you I stopped using my 70-200mm f2.8 GM after getting the 135mm f1.8 GM which is so superior. Love my 24mm f1.4 GM also, the best 24mm on the market IMHO. Cheers
Patrick I have the 24gm, the 100-400gm and about to buy the 600gm, when they update the 70-200 gm I will buy that. The 50 and 135gm are great but I am too spoiled by zooms and 70 is close enough to the 50 for me. I just rented the 135gm and took 1 test shot with the r4 and it made me cry it was so good. Whoever manages the lens manufacturing and design at Sony is a master at his trade. I know this will sound bold but I don't think there is any company making lenses today, that can design and manufacture an autofocusing lens as well as Sony. There are some that come close optically but end up being so heavy they cant get out of their own way to autofocus
Can't really argue against that list, those lenses are phenomenal, and I think way ahead of the competition especially when we take AF speed into account. The only thing, if you use equivalency with a crop factor, you must also multiply the f number by the crop factor, not only the focal length, so a 400mm f2.8 with a 1.5x crop is equivalent (in terms of angle of view and DOF) to a 600mm f4.2, not a 600mm f2.8, here 2.8 x 1.5 = 4.2.
Hello Patrick, really like your content and I think the re-tasking the focus hold button on the lenses to the 1.5-zoom is a great and very useful ideal. I searched through the menus on my A1 and can’t seem to find the 1.5-zoom. So could you walk me through the process of finding and re-tasking the lens button? Thanks for your help and time. Drew
Hello Patrick. 135GM is also my favorite. I love my 24GM too. I am saving for 50GM and 400GM. 600GM looks amazing but i can’t justify them both and 400 is More versatile. Great pictures to show what those lenses are capable of. Bravo
Patrick, thanks for the great video. I agree with your comments on the 135 GM. It is my favorite lens and I have the 50 F1.2 on order. I passed on the A1 for now and will stick with the A9ii and the A7siii. Have a great 2021.
I have the 24 & 135, doubt I will ever be able to get the 400 or 600, but use the 200-600 which as a hobbiest more than meets my need. Also have 90mm G for macro. All I need now is the A1 (waiting).
I can't afford those big lenses but I am going to get the 50 mm f1.2 for sport photography mtb on tight shots. I use the 135 GM and 24 Gm now and I also want to get the 35 mm f1.4. Those were some AWESOME photos you showed. I hardly touch my 70-200 zoom anymore. Thanks Patrick for sharing!

I use the 24mm GM f/1.4 , 50mm GM f/1.2, and 135mm GM as my holy trinity on the Sony A7R IV. I love the entire setup. Excellent photos with this setup. I can’t afford the 400 & 600!
Thanks for sharing Patrick! I have the 24GM and use it mostly for video on my a7Siii. Like you, the 135GM is one of my all-time faves! CORRECTION: The FE 600GM is f/4, NOT f/1.4 (as stated in your list)!
This is a little off topic but I have a suggestion for Sony for their sports/wildlife oriented cameras. When shooting in crop mode let me see the entire frame with frame lines for the cropped image it is recording. That would be a game changer as you could get the extra reach, smaller files and yet still see the action just outside your frame to better anticipate when to fire the shutter. When I shoot birds with my A7R4 and the bird is moving fast crop mode is sometimes a little too tight and makes it hard to anticipate the birds movement, just guessing but I suspect it would help sport shooters like yourself also
Great idea! Used to get this if you stuck a dx Nikon lens on a full frame body, it would show the crop. I can count the times I’ve cut off a dancers limbs or a bit of bird wing because I missed.. Tend to frame wide and crop in post now.
Hi PM-R, love your videos, however the Sony FE 24mm F1.4 GM lens does not have the XD linear AF motors or linear motors, instead it has the older DDSSM (Direct Drive SSM) AF motors.
So other than the 600, 400, and a1 which I can not afford, I love my 135, 24 (although I hope the new 35/1.4 GM replaces it) and the new 50/1.2 are lenses I have or will have for my A7R IV and A9. For longer lenses I have to use the 100-400 GM and 200-600 G. Thank you for your video.
Hey Patrick. For night football in well lit division 1 stadium....would you rather shoot with a 70-200 GM or the 200-600 GM. I can deal with a little noise. I'm guessing at f/6.3 I would be at ISO 20000 or so. Images don't need to be print quality. I know I couldn't pull that off with a 1DX but do you think images are serviceable at ISO 20000 on a A9 v1. The other thing I would be worried about would be the lens focusing speed with less than ideal light. My budget is around $4000 so I plan to get a used A9 for around 2k and then around 2k on a lens. I have full access to the sideline but I've shot football with 70-200 before and it's just not enough reach. Thanks.
not much. It's one of Sony's only duds. It's pretty sharp but has too much distortion for my liking. The newer 24mm f/2.8 Compact prime is awesome though
Great video but sad I will probably will never own most of these as a sports photographer hobbyist. Would you consider giving a poor man’s version of the best 5 Sony lens for sports? Regards.
As a new a1, 100-400 g and 600 f4 owner with the 70-200 on order mainly shooting bif and not a professional I see Sony makes several zooms in the f2.8 range but don’t see any zooms on your list.
when I made this video, there was no long zoom that could keep up with the focus speed of the 400GM and 135GM. Now there is! the new FE70-200mm f/2.8GM II is it. It's as fast as any other GM lens made recently and got all four XD linear AF motors. It's a screamer!!! The older 24-70GM and 70-200GM are sharp lenses but cannot keep up with the faster and newer GM primes...
Retasking the lens focus button to APS-C/Full Frame is so brilliant I had to go set it right away. I've been using C3 and it's not the best idea to use your shooting finger for that change when you need to use it often or unexpectedly. Thanks! Case in point, I'm looking at getting the 24-70 GM II for ringside photography. The 70mm is a little short for my tastes when shooting across the ring so I will use that button in combo with my A1. Speaking of which, do you have a better suggestion than that lens? I do need 24mm wide in order to get both fighters full frame during the winner announcement shooting from the edge of the mat. If I didn't I would be sorely tempted in getting the Tamron 35-150mm f/2-f/2.8.
I love that all five lenses are primes, but I do not like 50mm lenses, I do have a 55mm lens, but more often I use a 60mm macro lens as a all-round lens (wish Sony will make a GM version !), those two lenses I plan to skip and get a Voigtländer 65mm 2.0 Macro-Lanthar. I do not plan to get neither 400 2.8 nor 600 4.0, too expensive and too large and heavy when I am hiking, so I have the 200-600 untill new future prime tele lenses arrive in 300mm 4.0, 400 4.5 and 500 5.6. My main set of lenses right now are Sony 24mm 1.4 GM, Sony Zeiss Sonnar 55mm 1.8, classic analog 60mm 2.8 macro, Sony 135mm 1.8 GM , Sony 200-600mm 5.6-6.3 G with Sony A7RIV plus at home back-ups of a lot of classic analog lenses from fx Tamron adaptall-2, Canon FDn, Hasselblad and Leica R lenses. I really need to down size to a smaller set of primes though. 1). If I can't part with the 135, would you lose the 85mm 1.4? I also have the Batis 85 because it's just lighter for travel (and the Batis 135) - see my issue! 24-50-135? 2) I also have the 50 1.2 on order, as well as the new 35 1.4 GM. I see you didn't mention the new 35 GM and I've heard amazing things about it as well...is that just a focal length you can do w/ out?
I'd prefer to see a 200/2 with matching TCs than a 300/2.8. I say this as someone who doesn't shoot sports at all so maybe you may have a different take on that.
YES!!! I'd love that too. In Canon, I had only 200mm f/2L, 400 f/2.8L, and 600mm f/4L. I then used the TC's to get what I needed otherwise. Plus, the 200mm f/2 is also useful for video, at least for me.
Have you heard about the potential "camera freezing issue" related to the 70200GM some folks are reporting in the german speaking Sony forum community. It does not affect all cameras/glasses (eg my combo is fine), however it seems to be acknowledged by Sony ?
Simon, why can't you ask me an easy question, brother? I ended up buying both. I typically use the 70-200II for wedding work, PJ, and news type stuff. I use the primes for my portrait work where I'm lighting and have a little more time... Having both tools in my box is great. Sony needs to address the 85mm focal length soon as their GM lens doesn't work at 30fps on the a1. I'm hoping they just go to f/1.2 and call it a day ;)
I've never found a good way to measure this... but I can tell you that the 1.4 is seamless-- I can't tell the difference in speed or accuracy in the least. With the 2x, because of the loss of 2 stops of light, it's normal for the camera to lose a little in translation. If you add ND, this gets worse...
Great review PM-R. I've been waffling on and off about the A1...but between you and Mark Galer, I think I'm leaning heavy just save up and buy it. I don't think an A9 II or A7 IV is really gonna do the photo precision job I've been seeing from you guys out of the A1 and I've got an excellent array of Sony glass.
A very helpful video for a wildlife photographer who's considering switching from Nikon to a Sony A1. I've been testing the A1 with a 200-600mm (non-GM) lens and have been disappointed with the lack of sharpness vs my D850 + 500mm f/5.6 PF. A friend mentioned an issue of "sensors unresolving lenses". For the A1, would it be best to stick to GM lenses, such as the 100-400mm and use teleconverters if necessary? Thanks for your advice
I use Elinchroms for everything. I used to use the big Dynalite AP1600 packs and heads but they went out of business, so now I just double up the set of 4 and use 8 in larger, brighter arenas. I have a couple of videos on this topic if you want to search my channel for them. I'll be doing an 8-head install using Elinchrom ELC500 HD Pro units next month and will be making a video on the process. :)
I hate you....😂😂 I have the 24mm f1.4, 16-35 f2.8 , 70-200 f2.8 , 100-400 GM’s and the 50 f1.2 on order.....but the lens I really enjoy is the Sigma 85 f1.4 (sorry for the bad language) But mannnn your images are world class.I’d love the A1 and the 400 f2.8 but I think it would result in divorce and homelessness...🤣🤣

Any rumors on alpha 1 mark ii?
Patrick what do you use for your strobe setup?
I use Elinchroms for everything. I used to use the big Dynalite AP1600 packs and heads but they went out of business, so now I just double up the set of 4 and use 8 in larger, brighter arenas. I have a couple of videos on this topic if you want to search my channel for them. I'll be doing an 8-head install using Elinchrom ELC500 HD Pro units next month and will be making a video on the process. :)
And not 35GM?!
LOL 13:04 poor guy
I know, right????
I hate you....😂😂 I have the 24mm f1.4, 16-35 f2.8 , 70-200 f2.8 , 100-400 GM’s and the 50 f1.2 on order.....but the lens I really enjoy is the Sigma 85 f1.4 (sorry for the bad language)
But mannnn your images are world class.I’d love the A1 and the 400 f2.8 but I think it would result in divorce and homelessness...🤣🤣
Living in your car is over-rated, Martin... Avoid the 400GM for sure...
FE600MM is f/4 not f/1.4
if I said that, my mistake
@@PMRTV no in the description.
Take my effin money 🤑😭😭😭😭
Idiot puts a lens he hasn’t shot with yet…. Nice job
All of us pro's are excited by new lenses. Of course we are going to shoot them for the first time... Everyone has a first time with any lens?????
