The nicest thing about MFT is the weight of the complete system. I've got a Fuji X-T5 and a 80mm macro lense, when I add a flash the whole thing then weighs about 2,1kg... Which means, I mostly leave the flash at home. Thanks for your videos!

Mosquitos are so rough in the United States Midwest. I bought a white long sleeve UV resistant shirt because they have an extremely harder time attacking me now, and the UV resistant is to stay cooler when the sun is out. And I wear jeans regardless because getting bit on the legs is the worst. They go for the hands and neck very rarely in my experience while wearing all of those clothing. I would rather be hot and somewhat sweaty than getting bit every 5 seconds. Average temp in the midwest for summer is around 85F/29C. Mosquitos will literally ruin macro walks if you dont prepare
Hi @MicaelWidell. I haven't had any issues with the auto image preview that was an actual bug. But, what I have found, is that the auto-face sensor in the viewfinder will override image preview. If you're holding the camera too close to your face or body when the image preview pops up, it'll shut off the image preview. Try disabling auto EF switching.
@@MicaelWidell You can view it in the EVF. Or your can view it on the rear screen. But, if you start at the rear screen, then move to the EVF (or vise versa), it switches out of preview.
Also check for reflective material on your clothing.... I had a similar issue with my Sony, then discovered it was the tiny reflective logo on my jacket collar that affected the eye-proximity sensor!
I often chill and have your videos on, while i am editing. Just purchased an OM-1 myself, and there are many features that are so good for macro. With my 60mm, Raynox and v350 it's really lightweight and fun to use!
Thanks Michael. Another great video with some lovely photographs. I’m glad that you have reverted to shooting video in the wide aspect ratio most suited to RUclips. Can’t wait for your next one.

Great work as usual. I envy you and your lush green countryside. I live in southern Spain where there is little green or flowers, it's mostly hot and dry and almost always windy in summer where 32°C - 45°C is normal. No early morning dew for dragonflies and sunrise is close to 7am.
I would prefer Spain for macro photography though as you have much longer insect season. In Sweden we have a very beautiful and sweet summer, but also very very short.
Another great vid. You advice has been a huge help to me just starting out. The problem is insect photography is its like a drug. On my wildlife walks every morning I now carry my om-1 with the 60mm macro/flash/diffuser instead of my 300 f4. It’s in my backpack just in case though. Now thinking I need to add OM-1 II for wildlife and leave my current OM-1 setup for macro.
Nice photowalk, Michael. Always interesting to hear of your successes/struggles with macro, as we all have. That hemipteran face-on image is incredible. Thank you. Mosquitoes are bad everywhere. I'm in coastal Southern California, near original Disneyland. We have 26 species of mosquitoes in this area, plus deer flies and horse flies; can't find that info in the tourist brochures. I keep DEET in the car at all times.
Thank you for sharing, your images are always lovely and enjoyable to see. Keep up the work on the OM-1, I am getting better with my macro shots as well and every outing feels like an adventure. More bug hunting to come :)
I think the caterpillar, is one of the Burnet Moths, but I couldn't tell you which one. If the AK and Cygnustech diffuser are like the first concave diffusers I made, you can actually recover highlights up to nearly 2 stops over-exposed. It's not as important now as it used to be, but before the noise removal software was so good, it used to be important to get plenty of light. I started stacking, a very long time ago, about 18 years back, but then I gave up and went back to single exposures, as it was more fun.
Yeah, the Burnets look a bit similar, but they have more clearly defined areas of black on yellow. I believe this is the Large White, Pieris brassicae. This also fits better with the foodplant, which I think is Bunias orientalis - at least it's Brassicaceae. Lowland Burnets typically feed on Fabaceae.
@@hawahawa7808 - I was going by the shape of the larva, not the colouration. It would almost never scroll from one image to the next or previous image. In a sense, I am glad I'm not the only one who had the problem. I thought I must have been doing something wrong.
Well, one very good thing about stacking, minimal if any noise. Question, you increase the flash output but you closed down the aperture a touch to f/14. It must have been the right amount.

I did not notice that, but hard to be sure. I think I will not use insect repellent again, as it is not that effective and people say it can damage my cameras plastic.
Yes I got it. I get a lot of messages every day, and often it can take a week or so before I have time to read them, especially if they are longer than a simple question. I don't always have time to reply.
If you use stacking with flash, then the max aperture is 1/100. I did single shots in this video and then you should be able to shoot at 1/250. But honestly it will seldom make much of a difference to your photos.
Only if you find you have an issue with your camera which is fixed in the om-1. The only thing I can think of is if you REALLY need the increased shutter speed when stacking.
As for image review I have turned it off in my Olympus cameras as I find it of little use, so cannot help there, especially as your issues seem to be intermittent. If I need to review the shot I just press the left arrow button for image review. That way I can examine it and not be limited to a particular time. Seems like a non issue. I had to laugh when you talked about cropping as a problem because of only 20mp. My wife's first digital camera had 4mp and mine, a DSLR, had 6mp. 35mm film was somewhere around 8-12mp. Software these days makes ISO and image size less relevant. I have enjoyed your channel and have purchased the Godox 860iii flash and Cygnustech diffuser because of this. I have the O-M1 and 90mm macro. As for mozzies, well I have lived with these my whole life in Australia and New Guinea. Long sleeves and some insect repellant usually works.
What do you really mean by "it works one in 10 times"? Like it doesn't show up at all? If yes, then I can say that I don't have that problem... Otherwise, can you explain what you are facing exactly?
@@MicaelWidell mh... one possible explanation is that you are (accidentally?) half-pressing the shutter button right after taking the shot. It could be accidental really because of its sensitivity. Depending on your button+af-configuration, this would trigger AF/AE and certainly not show the previous shot, i.e., prioritize the next shot. 🙂

Do you think upgrading to the om1 is worth it if I have an em1 mk2
Only if you find you have an issue with your camera which is fixed in the om-1. The only thing I can think of is if you REALLY need the increased shutter speed when stacking.
Is the caterpillar a cabbage white?
Love your videos it has inspired me to start macro photography.
With 1/8 - is your flash able to create a 10-20 burst of photos?
Not sure, but in this video I didn't do any stacks so it doesn't matter. If I stack I use 1/32 or similar strength
@MicaelWidell ok, after your recommendation I've got the same flash, and I was surprised that I have to use 1/32 for bigger bursts. Cheers mate
Be careful about using DEET around your camera gear. DEET melts plastic.
Yeah I think I will not use it again, as it is not that effective either
What do you really mean by "it works one in 10 times"? Like it doesn't show up at all? If yes, then I can say that I don't have that problem... Otherwise, can you explain what you are facing exactly?
Yes exactly, most of the time it doesn't show up at all
@@MicaelWidell mh... one possible explanation is that you are (accidentally?) half-pressing the shutter button right after taking the shot. It could be accidental really because of its sensitivity. Depending on your button+af-configuration, this would trigger AF/AE and certainly not show the previous shot, i.e., prioritize the next shot. 🙂
Nope, I use back button AF
When u look close u can tell the sex of the mosquitos. If u cant see a banana they are females😅
Use a Balaclava & full gloves or biker gloves to reduce mosquito bites. This what i do i apply Anti-Mosquito creams on my hands & some parts of my neck & face before wearing a Balaclava & hand gloves to reduce Moquito bites.
Love the eyes on that tiny green insect
