Man I wish we’d have the Gerald Undone in the photography world, your videos are.. basically perfect. On point, very technical, yet short and without the bullshit.
This is what makes Gerald so great. I can't think of anyone else doing these kinds of in depth tests that result in such a wealth of information. Thanks!
Finally: someone talking about the official battery grip! When everyone was talking about overheating, and Gerald noted that a dummy battery alleviates that, my mind instantly jumped to the battery grip. There's also a 4-battery external official dummy battery too.
Gerald, your dedication to sharing your deep understanding videography and photography is very much appreciated. And inspires me to understand my cameras better.
1. 8K mode has about 17ms rolling shutter. 2. 8K mode's 4K HDMI output uses nearest neighbour down-scaling, it appears sharp but at the expense of increased moire, compared to pixel-binning. 3. Canon's 4K HQ mode uses bi-linear down-scaling from 8K.
I've always wondered who Gerald is looking out for in these intros, but you won't catch my man slipping. This timestamp 0:09 shows his eyes sharp, staying calm but focused so he can bring us the tech breakdowns we rely on. Thank you for your service Mr. Undone, I hope they catch whoever is out there looking for you.
S-cinetone sounds interesting. You still have to deal with super whites though, right? Would love to see a video some day explaining super whites completely and how to properly use them in post. Thanks for the great videos!
Here's something to test out: variable shutter and how to deal with flickering light sources in camera with A1's new fine-tunable shutter speed. You can test this in both photo and video mode. Currently there's not much out there on these minute but VERY IMPORTANT details. Also the new 1/400 flash sync and anti-distortion shutter might also be interesting to test out! Here's to Sony loaning you the A1 for another round of testing ;p
After watching your videos and other's producers for years. You still have the best in-depth video's ever. Bravo for your hard work. It's a lot of work what you do and I appreciate it! Thank you. Need more of this and less of the B.S. out there.
Gerald, this was one of the most useful videos for the ⍺1 that I've ever watched. I was happy to see that you have a JOIN button. I joined, and I look forward to learning more about my new ⍺1's video capabilities. Thank you for your detailed outlook.
How’s the autofocus in 8K? In the previous gen (a7iii, a9, a7Riii, etc) when they first introduced 4K, AF was/is pretty lousy. How does it work, especially with eye and face AF in 8K?
Great catch on the external recording. I recently worked with a client that had pretty much this same implementation - read the sensor at one density, optionally pass through a dsp IC that has a switch to select input density and output density, where density here is resolution. If you are reading at high density it uses more power and you have oversample the output in the dsp, otherwise you can pretty much just pass through the signal. It's interesting that Sony didn't include logic to determine whether you are actually recording internally and changing the read resolution automatically - I don't have an a1 so I don't know, but I'm guessing it's no issue to start internal recording at any point while you are recording externally. They probably can't just flip the read resolution that quickly so they have to leave it as you set it. Very neat observation and video, thanks!
Over heating & battery issue is still the main issue apart from all the advanced technology , Canon 1Dx iii & Nikon D6 remains on their spot in case of durability all we need is and updated version of this two brands . Is Sony A1 test in Artic ?
Hi Gerald. Not sure I missed this but I can’t see what setting do you recommend on the a1 to capture the highest quality on the ninja when the camera is setup to 8K. Did you say auto? Or 4K? For the hdmi output.
I’m surprised that they don’t bring out a grip that also contains an external hard drive, that can be linked to the camera so files are saved directly to it.

That's awesome Gerald! Thanks for taking the time to put these tests together ✌🏽
I need to create a compact battery system that fits into an underwater housing in a specific space. What voltage and amps are required to power/charge the camera through USB-C power delivery? Camera will have it factory battery installed.
Noticed the same thing when sending 1080p from the A7SIII to the Atem Mini Pro ISO. Quality of the ISO recordings was much better when the camera is set to 4k internal.
The oversample thing is something I also saw way back on the Panasonic G70. You could go 1080p 60 or 30 without a crop or you could live with a slight crop, set the camera to 2160p 30 and output super sharp 1080p. I then had the signal fed into a USB capture thingie. Probably one of the best 1080p webcam solutions at the time.
Question about timed video length tests... If the camera and subject are stationary, is that a “fair” test? I thought video compression works by minimizing data written in part by comparing frame to frame, and if that’s the case, isn’t a timed test of a wall where nothing ever changes making it easier on the camera than normal use? I wonder how a stationary test would compare to a camera on an automatic slider or panning rig in terms of heat and file size? I can see your gears turning already.
Gerald Great Vid! one question I have is whether the 8K to 4k output to the Ninja V is still truly 422 all-I on the ninja. Since the internal option only supports 420 HS does that affect the quality of the output in terms of chroma subsampling on the ninja V when set to 8K?
Presumably it should be possible because you can intelligently downsample 8k 4:2:0 into 4k 4:4:4 (don't downsample the chroma channels and oversample the luma channel). Don't know how the Ninja does it though.
Hey Gerald , BIG FAN. Got a question that I think only you have the answer for. Using this knowledge I set my a7iii to 4k internally but output 1080p, my capture card is saying this is 60fps. Now, does this mean I'm getting 4k 30 downscaled to 1080 but with added dead frames or am I getting some weird version of 4k 60fps (which the camera doesnt do) downscaled to 1080? Apologies for how dumb I am, hope that makes sense!
I have a question Gerald, if you don't mind, as you didn't really talk about this. Ok, so we set the camera internally to record 8k, but choose output to be 4k over HDMI. My only concern with this? Aren't we going to lose the 4:2:2 goodness, and also be stuck at 30P? I assume so :( Please confirm or correct me. Thank you for such great work on your videos, I love them!
Also, the battery grip provides more surface area to dissipate the heat as well so that may be another reason the grip aids the power delivery scenario?
as a 20 year long Canon user (tons of lenses) the R5 and R6 release made me think they'll change. But, looking at how quick Sony is with firmware updates, and that they don't go and cripple functions like USB-charging, oversampled external output etc etc.... now I'm back to thinking I should probably jump ship and get me a Sony system. The other thing next to trying to avoid the huge cost of switching is ergonomics. Sony cams feel cramped in my hands.
Just tried the FX6 today. Low light is amazing sure but the way the FX6 handles motion looks more " Videoish " or " Video Cam " to me. More newsy. I feel the C70 motion is allot more natural and Alexa like. Do you also see this? The colours in the FX6 are very good, best S log I have seen but allot more of a baked in look than ever before, looks more like C-Log3.
These differences in IQ is very easy to see in YT! THX!! It was eye opening for usng all Sony cameras! BTW... You sound amazing! What did you do since your initial new studio tour to improve acoustics?
So, what’s the benefit of the cf express type-A cards over cf express type-B. You can record 8k with V60? Does the type-A cards eliminate the buffer like the 1DX III and we can shoot until the cards fill up? I was hella annoyed when they came out with the type a cards. Instead of following through with type b. Mostly because other cameras we own use the type b and it would be nice to not have to need multiple mediums. SD and Type B but now type A as well and only for Sony’s. It gives off memory stick vibes or XQD. Who’s really going to adopt type a over type b. It really seems like type B is already the standard. No doubt that the A1 is supreme camera. The price feels more flagship than the camera does. It’ll be interesting to see what canons mirrorless version of the 1DX will be compared to the A1.
Great that you mention for streaming, I frequently use my A7SIII as a webcam and knowing that setting it to 4K internally but keeping my output set to 1080p is nice. I was always confused which is the right settings to use for a situation like that.
Around 9:30 could you do a USB-C cable to mains? I think that would be even more economical by removing the need for a power bank. (Of course it's not portable but possible nonetheless!)
Love how you’re saving money on ancillaries on an 6.5k camera ! However camera has 4 cards slots, how much video can you do with those is there a max size limit to the card size the camera takes? Also can you demo how to change a card while recording and not shake the camera? I think you’ll need the A1 for at least another month to do these tests 😀
I dug deeper on the usb c power supply and found that Sony states in order to run the A7Siii without draining the battery you need a power supply capable of putting out 3A at 9V. I wonder if that’s the same for the A1 and if your power supply puts out less than the stated 3A
Would love to see some testing & comparisons of the Sonys 4K against the Canon R5 4K HQ - hopefully new firmware coming soon will improve it even further with CLOG + codecs etc!
We shoot real estate interiors and SLOG3 is just so fussy. We however like the DR out of it. That said, would S Cinetone give me the most DR outside of LOG? I am getting good results with Cine4 and also standard with shadows at +7 and highlights at -7.

I recently subscribed to Story Blocks as a result of your videos that you were doing with the studios. I thought they were wonderful and so I gave them a look and used your link. I bought a whole year's worth of subscription, I hope it helps you out in some meaningful way. Hoping to make Story Blocks bigger part of my channel! I absolutely love their After Effects templates. Man I wish we’d have the Gerald Undone in the photography world, your videos are.. basically perfect.
On point, very technical, yet short and without the bullshit.
That 8k internal to 4k output is absolutely brilliant sir, well done
That is an interesting finding about the external recording.
Yup that is a fantastic find! Oversampled 4K recording.
"I'm Gerald Undone and it's been S-Log since I've seen you"
aight you won this one
jesus this one is so good.
Slow down 😩
I love your videos but can you slow down no need to talk so fast
@@POSE4DAN Is that me or Gerald?
This is what makes Gerald so great. I can't think of anyone else doing these kinds of in depth tests that result in such a wealth of information. Thanks!
Now I know why everyone sends you to watch Gerald Undone
I bet James May would too, spanners are looking tidy and are correctly placed.
Thought everyone sees Markuspix
I'm Gerald Undone, and I know Victoria's Secret.
This is the type of content almost nobody else creates and I truly appreciate it! Amazing work, as usual, thanks a lot, Gerald!
Finally: someone talking about the official battery grip! When everyone was talking about overheating, and Gerald noted that a dummy battery alleviates that, my mind instantly jumped to the battery grip. There's also a 4-battery external official dummy battery too.
My First thoughts were dummy battery in the grip 😅
But what about the dummy behind the camera? I hear it can cause issues.
I've been watching your vids for years, and they just keep increasing in quality. Always a pleasure to watch your discussions
Gerald, your dedication to sharing your deep understanding videography and photography is very much appreciated. And inspires me to understand my cameras better.

the oversampling info was super nice Gerald, thanks for your exhaustive contribution as always!
Genius setting 8k internal and getting a sharper 4K externally!

Love the attention to the Tech side of the review & testing various situations with multiple compositions of the gear ... Great Job as Always !
S-cinetone sounds interesting. You still have to deal with super whites though, right? Would love to see a video some day explaining super whites completely and how to properly use them in post. Thanks for the great videos!
Literally the best camera videos on RUclips. Thanks, G.
So appreciate all the technical deep dives. Been here for a long time and there is no one better. Thanks so much. 🙏🏼
Just because I know you can do this, does it run cooler when you drill holes in the dummy battery?
Here's something to test out: variable shutter and how to deal with flickering light sources in camera with A1's new fine-tunable shutter speed. You can test this in both photo and video mode. A new breed of RUclipsr that really knows their stuff. Brilliant. Very informative. Thank you.
There is nobody best at this than Gerald. A unicorn.
What can I say? I'm SOOOOO thankful/grateful to have you advocating for the community and educating us as well! Alright... I'm done. :-)
Can you please recommend THE BEST dummy batteries to power the A1, A7Siii, and A7iii? I would like to power by mains and also d-tap. Thanks!
"I'm Gerald Undone and all i want is a perfect camera"
Camera conspiracies...😂😂😂
Hell yes. We need this to happen before the cripple hammer comes out of hibernation...
Need a little conspiracy in your life?.....
Loser :)
03:52 - Learning with Gerald. Love it!
i've never found a youtuber that impresses me as much as this guy every video
Love your (non) sponsor disclosure at the beginning. Few RUclipsrs do that, which speaks plenty for themselves.
@Gerald why not use HLG instead of S-Cinetone
I just bought a7Siii and than FX3 came out... Should I return my a7Siii and get FX3 or just stay with what I have and finally unbox that bad boy?! :)
Depends. If you use xlr, and don't use the evf, the fx3 could be the better option. Other than ergonomics, it is literally the same camera
Stay with it
This Guy deserve at least 1 million subscribe, great job as always.
He'll get there... =)
Gerald, you’re my go to for anything creative related. Your honesty and in depth reviews are unmatched

Will Sony make an 'X' version of this camera too? Like they did with the FX3. Thoughts?
Gerald, you are the absolute best. You are the advocate that Sony didn't know, it needed.
Gerald, would you still recommend the A1 in April of 2022 or do you feel the new version will arrive later this year?
I like that the wrenches in the background sort of mimic the dynamic range tester

Hi, awesome video, thanks a lot! What about a7RV? Is it the same story as a1? For static shots it sounds like a ideal compromise.
What about (8k in/4K out- Sony A1) VS (4k in/4k out Sony A7sIII) ? Which one looks better?

Very neat observation and video, thanks!
Do you use a gray card for exposing S-cinetone or just stick to protecting highlights and getting what looks good in camera?
Over heating & battery issue is still the main issue apart from all the advanced technology , Canon 1Dx iii & Nikon D6 remains on their spot in case of durability all we need is and updated version of this two brands . Is Sony A1 test in Artic ?
Could the oversampled 4K got “fixed” by sony?
I’ve tried it and the 8K option is disabled while the HDMI cable is connected to the ninja v.
same
Hi Gerald. Not sure I missed this but I can’t see what setting do you recommend on the a1 to capture the highest quality on the ninja when the camera is setup to 8K. Did you say auto? Or 4K? For the hdmi output.

Great, any test video quality 8k compare to canon R5?

The resolution should be there as Paramour mentioned in their reply as well.
Not even a Sony guy, and I’ll sit and watch these videos cause Gerald makes it interesting.
Hi Gerald, whats the brand of the powerbank?
The 8k internal / 4k output does not work if outputting raw over HDMI.
Such a pleasure to watch your work Gerald 👍thank you.

Truly excellent review / update! This is next level insight into the capabilities of these cameras that I haven’t seen elsewhere.
so you're saying that you don't need to have CFExpress cards to record 8K? Just v60 rated SD cards?
Great video again Gerald I pre order sony a1 but active steady shot cannot be enable
I have a question Gerald, if you don't mind, as you didn't really talk about this. Ok, so we set the camera internally to record 8k, but choose output to be 4k over HDMI. My only concern with this? Question: How exactly to you connect your A1 to mains power? What are the components you use and trust on a, $6,500 camera.
These differences in IQ is very easy to see in YT! THX!! It was eye opening for usng all Sony cameras! BTW... You sound amazing! What did you do since your initial new studio tour to improve acoustics?
So one point I missed - what are the best ISO’s for s-cinetone on the a1? You mentioned them for the a7s3.
Hi Gerald, I really like your videos.
So, what’s the benefit of the cf express type-A cards over cf express type-B. You can record 8k with V60? Does the type-A cards eliminate the buffer like the 1DX III and we can shoot until the cards fill up?

Gerald in your opinion which of the Sony camera has the best and fastest autofocus in video mode? I’m a bird photographer.
Great information Gerald. Thank you for sharing! 👍
Thank God for Gerald Undone. And thank Gerald Undone for Gerald Undone.
Yes! S-Cinetone gets Undone!
Now we need a Rode Wirless Go 2 vs Hollyland Lark vs Saramonic Blink Pro
Would you prefer s cinetone in low light vs slog3 ?
Thanks for following up on the dummy battery vs battery grip idea!
Love how you’re saving money on ancillaries on an 6.5k camera ! However camera has 4 cards slots, how much video can you do with those is there a max size limit to the card size the camera takes? Color phase +2 for scinetone as well?
I probably wouldn't, no. That's more of an S-Gamut3.Cine thing.
Would love to see some testing & comparisons of the Sonys 4K against the Canon R5 4K HQ - hopefully new firmware coming soon will improve it even further with CLOG + codecs etc!
Amazing video! Im between a7siii and S1h. Can't decide. What's your opinion on these cameras?
This video was helpful and entertaining. Thanks, Gerald.
Very informative and great comparisons on screen as usual! Thank you for taking the time and effort to compare these options and settings.
Hi Gerald, wouldn't filming moving object like ventilator blowing on tinsel be more representative of overheating?
We shoot real estate interiors and SLOG3 is just so fussy. We however like the DR out of it. That said, would S Cinetone give me the most DR outside of LOG? I am getting good results with Cine4 and also standard with shadows at +7 and highlights at -7.
those shelves look familiar lol.
Fro Knows Photo!!!!
I think yours are higher quality. These are my old ones from my 2018 set. Home Depot ones.
@Gerald Those closed captions of yours are amazing.
You are very much underrated bro
DO YOU think sometimes sony will make a 24-70 f4 refresh? Thats my faw lens. :)

I've been down scaling 4k from my A7III externally to my Blackmagic recorder for a few years now; love the results.
