Hi outstanding review I am planning to get this camera it’s been out for about 9 months or more for me it’s the price tag savings up one? Is are you going to start using it your self. It not only the camera but the lens that makes a vary useful tool in creating media still or video I am planning to pairing it with the atmos ninjaV+ I want to use everything this has to offer but it’s going to be a big investment for me. As a older student several teachers have made comments as to the death of high power cameras fie to the high quality of cell phone cameras and that there’s no big need to R and D of better big cameras after the a1 I may invest in a older Red 6-or 8K Thank you JoP
It’s believable how amazing your assessments of products are done so well . It’s obvious your passion is very much present. RUclips needs you . Thank you for your professionalism.
Absolutely. I purchased my dream camera in the a7Riii back in October and it's everything I hoped it would be. Camera these days are so incredibly advanced that for anyone less than the very highest level of professionals. getting a model a few years old is actually the much better choice. I paid £1,600 for my a7Riii. The new a1 is £6,500. The amount of high quality glass you can get with that insane difference will elevate the resultant photos orders of magnitude more than the higher specs of the newer model. Plus for 110mb uncompressed RAW files at 30 FPS... you'd better have $$$ to spend on additional storage...
@@jakejamesdougal I didn't have the extra cash to push up to the A7iii level, so I bought an A7ii this past July for 1,000. I am really enjoying shooting with it!

My prediction: no one will ever make a stills camera without video ever again. Why? Simply because the processors and sensors can do video, and the software doesn’t cost any extra. A stills only camera would be a niche product and more expensive than one that does video. Just ignore that little red button :)

Ted , i need your help ! A few years ago i was looking into quadrant framing and i found (probably in one of your videos) a catalog of the works of a famous film director(or a producer or something). He took photos of events and stuff, but the framing was odd. It looked like 35 mm vertical shot with people in the lower half of the frame and empty space in the upped half. But i forgot the name and now i can't find it. Does it ring a bell ?
I just got mine in the mail. Big surprise after the 400mm f/2.8 fiasco. I'm not a video shooter, so my needs perhaps aren't typical. I was blown away several years ago by the A9's stacked sensor and it's been a long wait for Gen II. Having a substantially improved sensor with two powerful processors makes this a configuration that I think will last. I frankly don't need 50 megapixels, but a 33 megapixel square format is sweeeeet. Never had a 'Blad, but I find myself so often these days cropping to 1:1 aspect ratio. I don't think that I am alone in wanting to be able to make ALL mode changes by feel while looking through the EVF. All those fiddly analog dials on the top are an annoyance. Just give me a bunch of programmable buttons and the fewest possible arbitrary restrictions on what can be programmed through buttons. That said, I am glad that Canon is over the long run trying to give Sony some real competition.
Does anyone know if this has automatic focus bracketing? It should do at this price. If it's already in the video can you tell me at what point please. I haven't seen the whole thing.
Thanks for sharing, From a usability perspective the menu system of the A1 appears to be one of its biggest disappointments where users really shouldn’t be left struggling to find settings without spending an inordinate amount of time in doing so. I know it’s been improved but sadly that’s not saying much where the sub standard menu system appears to have been a secondary consideration to Sony. From what I’ve seen you can’t even scroll through a video using the touchscreen which doesn’t rotate and falls well behind the quality of LCD displays offered by rival manufacturers. As a Nikon d850 owner looking to change systems I would have bought the A1 had it not been for the crappy UI which would leave me pulling my hair out.
What a nice camera! What I would like to see is a few more upgrades to older cameras through software. It seems the way technology is going the electronics is getting smaller yet more powerful. Those of us who think we are techno-geeks and want the latest and greatest, but can’t afford it, just need to use what we have.
Just curious.... your video here is the only place I've seen report the R4 as having a base ISO of 64. Everywhere else I look it's listed as 100. Can you please clarify?
What a beast! But unfortunately way beyond my budget. Haven't watched your video content for a while. You look great. I really like your new hairstyle. It suits you really well. I'm really thrilled about the cameras high iso performance. As I am a natural light only photographer this is something that I am really interested in.
It should be the best, considering how much it's worth. A quick question: why the very entry level full frame cameras with features equal to very entry level APS-C are worth like the very top of APS-C line? If not more. Is a full frame sensor that much more expensive to manufacture alone?
I believe you got it, the SIII! Good Ted, I am still shooting the A7R with my old Sony and Minolta DSLR lenses, are my old lenses capable of handling the newer cameras. I will be moving up to the 7R IV or A9.
The price of the A1 itself makes it out of reach to many. This model is for the super rich, pity...The advance technology is admired obviously. This new model, together with Fujifilm's GFX 100S hold the court right now. Let see what Canon and Nikon will come out next? Excellent video as always, thank you Sir!
Nice review, thanks. Shame you didn't include the R5 in the ISO tests and Resolution comparison. Glad to the the high iso is so good. Also a few shots of the pixel stacking on those flowers just to see how far it can go. Perhaps for a longer more complete review in the future.
You touched on this a little, in order for me to buy the A1 I will have to sell my A9 and my A7R4. I'm good with departing with the A9, but will I miss the A7R4? I shoot mostly wildlife and nature photography and a fair amount of video. Oh-and BTW I'll still have to come out of pocket. Although I'm hoping to recoup some of that out of pocket cost once the freelance world opens back up.
I would like to have all 3 of them, bc then i will be recording music studio sessions, using 3 cameras gives you almost a 3 D effect bc you film the same scene out of different angles. I just think that we will have to wait for the new M chip based Apple Mac Pro, would be surprised if the new 16 inch Macbook Pro M1X or the i 10 Razer Book Studio Edition can render and upload the footage of such 3 powerful and codex heavy cameras ?
hi ted, thanks for the great info! this is the first i've heard of the "M" mode, and this definitely piques my interest. can you please speak more to this? is this essentially a reduced-resolution raw?
Like the A7R4, this camera doesn't have a low res RAW and probably never will, which I think is stupid. I think the other mode they mention is a 10bit jpeg
I love my Sony A1 with the 35-150. I also have the 150-600 and a couple others. Sony a1 i think will be the top camera for a while still. I think it is so advanced that there's no need to upgrade. The af alone is far more superior and now with the new af and steady firmware update I'd say its extremely hard to beat. If your pictures are not turning out with either camera it's the photographers error. Even in most literature and real world reviews sony af among other things keep coming up on top. With unbiased reviewers ofcourse. I think the Sony is a little power house and if you need that extra grip you can put it on. You don't have to carry that extra weight especially when your hiking taking pics of wildlife and you have one of those huge lenses to capture your subjects. Plus with it's compact size it's more versatile so you can use it with most gimbals. If we're talking about serious videography that's huge plus. You dont have to spend more money for a larger gimbal plus all the add-ons you would use with a cage. This compact size would help keep the weight down which people dont realize how cumbersome these all that can be. So that compact body is perfect. The Sony a1 body alone is extremely versatile. And don't forget Sony makes sensors for most of these cameras including Nikon. So where would Nikon be without Sony tech. As for working in the dark i don't need gimmicks to get the job done. It's called muscle memory. It's not hard to memorize the buttons. Plus all the third-party lenses. Nikon to call this it's flagship i think is a huge error considering the z8 is rumored to come out.I just think people like to jump on the next new not necessarily the best thing. No loyalty imo. Although you can't go wrong with either in the end.
Very useful info. That being said, I am always confused why reviewers present info like the "jello analogy". It makes sense when it's explained, but no videographer will EVER be shooting video like that. I've literally watched thousands of hours of video on youtube, netflix, fb, IG. Never have I seen a video that moves back and forth so much, enough to the point where you can see shutter/jello issues.
Nice vid as always. Just a thought & I'm sure you & all your viewers know, when comparing the A1 to the R5, you have to think about the price point. If I could afford to make the switch I would pre order the A1 & all the Sony lens that I would need for it also. Let me go check my lottery tickets. Is it true on Sony cameras there is no option to turn off noise reduction? I thought I heard another reviewer mention that they wish they provided the choice with this camera.
Ted, can we look forward to a review of the Fujifilm GFX 100S? It doesn't come close to the Sony A1 specs for video, sports or wildlife photography - but for landscape, architectural, street, still-life and fine-art portrait work, I think it might just have the edge. I'm thinking about selling a kidney and buying both... What do you think?
While I am very happy and impressed to see this technology it opens immense curiosity for the possibilities when or if this technology is applied to a larger sensor like maybe the next Medium Format GFX.
I wonder who is behind the thumbs down. As always fast, to the point and chemical free of uhms and ahms. Liberating. I also think the sensor tech gets to little attention and falls into the shower of specs. My wonder, and I have asked in several forums. What are the Af calculations speed (120 times for A1)of the competition i.e Nikon D6, Canon 1 DXIII and R5. Anybody knows?
Its amazing how many photographers think higher megapixels means more noise. They view things at 100 % when they judge the noise which , because of the different megapixel counts, isn't comparing apples with apples. If you compare the global images of the full sensor, there's no significant difference in visible noise. Its when you crop and compare a 20 megapixel crop to a 20 megapixel full frame camera, that's when you see a noise difference because you're comparing 20 small megapixels to 20 much larger megapixels. Higher mpx cameras have a finer, smaller grain size which is hard to see if you're looking at the full Image. Both full sensors receive the same amount of light, that's why there's no difference in noise levels on the global image.
Thanks Ted, great review, the hardest part is having to send it back if I had to guess. Lot's of cash to put it in your bag, how much tech does one need to create content?
Great to see those video samples. I was surprised by how good the 4K footage looked out of the A1. Were you shooting that in Full Frame mode, or APS-C? Canon's standard 4K (not the 4K HQ) is really unsharp by comparison with their 4K HQ (and unusable in my opinion). I was concerned that the A1 might have the same problem. But the footage you showed was excellent. (BTW - I have an A1 on order. Also own the A7s III and the Canon R5.)
But it’s just 4:2:0 so that’s a big downside for many who need something higher. And there is a crop too. With less Bitrate it’s no Wonder that it has a higher running time. On the other hand default mode is 15minuted which is less then r5 25-30 minutes. You can deactivate the overheating limit but at your own risk of course. Not sure if in this case people wouldn’t been better with a dedicated video camera
Just wondering, looking at the background, did you have to sell all of your furniture to pay for the camera?
LOL!
He did just move to a studio. He mentioned it in a recent video. I'm sure it will get outfitted soon enough
I was thinking the same :D
Nah... just a kidney and lobe off his liver.
🤣
I could sell all my furniture and still not have enough for an A1!
Sony has invested more in sensors than ever. It's become an extremely lucrative arm of Sony Electronics. Incredible camera.

Not a Sony shooter, but there’s a possibility that this sensor may end up in a future body of a make that I love using😉😊
Maybe, but I don't think it's likely. Sony has kept the A9's sensor, with the stacked CMOS tech, to itself for almost four years now.
@@ziginox Everything has a price :)
That may happen. In 2026...
Amazing Work ✌️
Ted those images at the beginning lol....I know that wasn't sample images from the A1
They were. What are you talking about?
Why are the test scenarios so different between r5 and a1? What is the meaning?
I would like to have all 3 of them, bc then i will be recording music studio sessions, using 3 cameras gives you almost a 3 D effect bc you film the same scene out of different angles. I just think that we will have to wait for the new M chip based Apple Mac Pro, would be surprised if the new 16 inch Macbook Pro M1X or the i 10 Razer Book Studio Edition can render and upload the footage of such 3 powerful and codex heavy cameras ?
I think filling up your new place in a series would be great!
The ISO performance is just amazing on this camera
I would love to have S-Cinetone on the A7 SIII, I don't know if I would be using it, but I want it.
base ISO on both of these cameras is 100, not 64
Cool video man thanks for the info.
Ted, what GM lens are you using in this video?
Sorry, got it :)
hi ted, thanks for the great info! this is the first i've heard of the "M" mode, and this definitely piques my interest. can you please speak more to this? is this essentially a reduced-resolution raw?
Like the A7R4, this camera doesn't have a low res RAW and probably never will, which I think is stupid. I think the other mode they mention is a 10bit jpeg
Good analysis. Very fair. I am a Sony guy with Sony lenses.. once you are in you are in. Preordered... shoot wildlife.
Does this model still have what is referred to as "Amp Glow" when using high ISO settings?
never be able to afford it. Now that it's out of the way lets see the a7IV with some of this tech in there. And a high end APSC.
Can you upload some images with 35mm GM f1.4
Nice vid as always. Just a thought & I'm sure you & all your viewers know, when comparing the A1 to the R5, you have to think about the price point. If I could afford to make the switch I would pre order the A1 & all the Sony lens that I would need for it also. Let me go check my lottery tickets. Is it true on Sony cameras there is no option to turn off noise reduction? I thought I heard another reviewer mention that they wish they provided the choice with this camera.
Best sensor cleaning steps for the A1?
Ted, can we look forward to a review of the Fujifilm GFX 100S? It doesn't come close to the Sony A1 specs for video, sports or wildlife photography - but for landscape, architectural, street, still-life and fine-art portrait work, I think it might just have the edge. I'm thinking about selling a kidney and buying both... What do you think?
Would shooting in 422 have affected the tests?
While I am very happy and impressed to see this technology it opens immense curiosity for the possibilities when or if this technology is applied to a larger sensor like maybe the next Medium Format GFX.
Hey I just remembered, that you are living in Texas, how are you doing? Wish you all the best!
That's a great review
I wonder who is behind the thumbs down. As always fast, to the point and chemical free of uhms and ahms. Liberating. I also think the sensor tech gets to little attention and falls into the shower of specs. My wonder, and I have asked in several forums. What are the Af calculations speed (120 times for A1)of the competition i.e Nikon D6, Canon 1 DXIII and R5. Anybody knows?
Great video, thanks, and an amazing camera. Replay speed at 0.75x helps because Ted is super fast!
Just start doing well made, accurate, useful and articulate videos in the brand of your choice. It takes hard work and a LOT of time.
After my next big Hedge Fund trade I'll pick up a couple.
@Serginho Pelon Sorry Serginho, You don't get it.
crytocurrency! lol
I have to win the lottery. U have better chance than me.
Can’t say what I think until I get my A1 in my hands. I think it will be better for motocross than my rIII or r IV
Thank you Ted, ha ha I’m still learning my a7rII
Hmmm a DR test would be good here. A1 vs R5
Cool but did you break into a suburban foreclosure to film this?
Great to see those video samples. I was surprised by how good the 4K footage looked out of the A1. Were you shooting that in Full Frame mode, or APS-C? Canon's standard 4K (not the 4K HQ) is really unsharp by comparison with their 4K HQ (and unusable in my opinion). I was concerned that the A1 might have the same problem. But the footage you showed was excellent. (BTW - I have an A1 on order. Also own the A7s III and the Canon R5.)
You Rock Ted! :-)
Great another camera release, I don't care, I will wait for the next week to see the new one.
Isnt the best sensor the one Sony put in the GFX100?
Liked and Subscribed for the Logan's Run deep cut!
The A1 actually downsamples 8,6k, that is why it is so sharp compared to the R5
But it’s just 4:2:0 so that’s a big downside for many who need something higher. And there is a crop too. With less Bitrate it’s no Wonder that it has a higher running time. On the other hand default mode is 15minuted which is less then r5 25-30 minutes. You can deactivate the overheating limit but at your own risk of course. Not sure if in this case people wouldn’t been better with a dedicated video camera
Is it 10 bit at 8K?
Supposedly DR is somewhat meh with this sensor. Any comments on that?
