      @@abhishekbanerjee3214 depending on what your hobby is. People/ landscape/ holiday stuff and some casual video. A 28-70 2.8 ish and a 85 1.8 or 1.4 would get you 90% of the way. Get it 2nd hand and depending on location you will spend between 700-1400 depending on brands and speed.
      Need wider for landscape. Learn to stitch in post. Easy as hell. 85 for the dreamy stuff, sports also possible with 85.
      You do products/ still life or wildlife. I would recommend another kit
      100 ish macro for product (get a vintage pentax or Takumar, sharp and cheap.
      You need at least 400mm for wildlife.
      When you are just starting out. You get the big camera and find out glass is more important. You get the big glass. You find out lighting is even more important. Get the cheap glass and invest in strobes like the Godox ad200 with some nice modifiers. You will like the improvement gain more than the one you get from the expensive glass. Unless your hobby is landscape/ wildlife etc
      Real photographers that make a living out of it will never have 10+ lenses. Depending on your direction 2-5 maybe, using the 2 for 90% the time.

      to add to this. This dude has like 20 grand on the shelve. lifespan of a lens, average 10 years. You will break stuff, FE mount is not forever. If there is a new development, like curved sensors, your lens collection will be worthless in a couple of years. So 10 years average. is 2 grand a year you need to maintain a collections of this quality. Ad a new body every 5 years and you have a hobby that is hard to maintain

    After I sold my A7III and picked up the A7CII, I opted to downscale most of my lenses. I picked up the Sigma I-Series primes instead of GM glass and have been really impressed so far. I have the 20, 24, 35, and 65mm f2 primes. The 24 and 65 in particular feel very special in their rendering.

Also have both the 100-400 GM and 200-600 G I use for Wildlife and BIF. All used on my A1 or A7R IV. Separately I have some small f/2 primes I use on my A7C.

    Was never really a fan of a 24-70, but after getting the 24-70GM2, it has quickly became my personal favourite, I find the rendering to be quite nice (sort of a 3d pop), razor sharp and relatively light. The other 2 favourites being the 50GM and 135GM. While the 35GM and 70-200GM2 are absolute beasts and gets the job done, I've never find them that special.

    When I shot Sony my favorite two lenses were the Zeiss Loxia f/2 35mm and 50mm lenses. They are manual focus lenses but if your shooting style doesn't require AF these lenses are really good. They are affordable, small, light, the build quality is solid, and they give Great sharpness and contrast. They also have a de-click feature for video use.

      I returned Sony 20-70/4, got Tamron 20-40/2.8 instead. Sony is bulky, extends a lot, and after analyzing images there were just 5% taken above 40mm. The zoom feels like rubbing plastic on plastic, not a pleasant experience. Tamron is compact and rings are so smooth, the barrel extends very little, it's a pleasure to use. And since this lens is used indoors a lot, having f/2.8 is a great advantage. And ironically, Tamron AF is noticeably faster at 20mm in low light.

      @philenforce 11 месяцев назад

    I was hoping to hear more praises for the 16-35mm PZ like I saw in your last video I watched. I'm strongly considering it as my one wide angle lens but now I'm wondering if I should get the 16-35mm GM. I'm having a hard time committing to one.
    I have a bunch of primes but no zooms other than my 24-240 but I'm probably going to sell it. I only got the 24-240 because I saw it in mint condition for $550 and I couldn't resist but I need a better zoom. At first I thought I wanted a 24-70mm f2.8 but after doing more research and because I have no focal ranges wider than 24mm I'm looking at these two 16-35mm lenses. I have a 35, 50, and 85 all in f1.8 plus the 24-240 but now it's time to upgrade zoom lenses.
    I think I want to start with a wide angle for landscapes and I want to start doing family videos. The 16-35mm seems like it would be a great lens for these purposes.
    We have a Disney vacation coming up and I think the powerzoom would be perfect to use with the Sony a7IV on vacation for video and photo, possibly as my only lens.

      Personally I don't think you need anything between 35mm and 85mm because that's a range that's easy to cover by zooming with your feet. If you need to reach out to 400mm, I would recommend getting the 70-200mm GMII and the 2x teleconverter instead of the 85mm GM.

    Great little setup. I am guessing you are like me... you don't take it all out at the same time (or even on all trips). Personally I have 16-35 GM, Sigma 24-70 2.8, 100-400 GM (I also have the 1.4TC) and 24-240mm for zooms. It's a bit different of a holy trinity... but for what I do... 100-400mm works a lot better (honestly I think you are missing it from your kit.... once you start isolating subjects at 400mm... it's hard to go back). 24-240mm is a weird choice but it is great for hiking / travel / scouting and casual 1 lens photography. If you are a good photographer you can get around it's limitations. I don't think enough people value superzooms as an essential part of their kit. Primes wise; I have a Laowa 12mm F2.8 (I won this lens in a photo composition... I would carry it more if it weren't so heavy), the 35mm F1.8, Zeiss 35mm F2.8, Zeiss 55mm F1,8, 85mm F1.8 and 90mm G Macro F2.8. My favorite focal length is 35mm (hence all the options), followed by 85/90mm. Like you - I get good shots with the 55mm... but I don't love shooting it, and will never sell it. The 12mm can be super fun... especially because it has a very short minimum focus distance... so you can get almost wide angle macro shots. You get very different shots from everyone else when you shoot it. Anyways... enjoyed hearing how you use your options. Would love to see what you take with you on different trips sometime.

    I have a question I have been planning to ask most of the photographers I follow on RUclips.
    At what stage in one's photography journey would one develop a preference for specific focal lengths? I always hear photographers (pro) talk about why they don't like a specific focal length but never found anyone explaining it further. Is it across the genre when you said in this video that you don't enjoy 50mm focal length? I have been using a DSLR for a few years now (purely a hobby), and lately, I realise that all I did was point and shoot (literally, although proudly in full manual mode 😂). In my initial days, I thought mastering the manual mode was everything in photography, which I successfully achieved. Still, in that pursuit, I missed other essential aspects of photography (your Visual Patterns playlist was an eye-opener).
    Your channel was like a godsent 🙏🏽, and your "Visual Patterns" playlist is the first thing I share with my photographer friends. I am sure you must also have had a similar stage and understand the reason behind this question. What resources would you recommend to help get better at this? I know going out and taking more photos would be one obvious option, but I am sure there should be something more to it, as my Google Photos has thousands of photos I took using my camera and edited (conscious action), still oblivious of the focal length aspect.
    If possible, could you do a video on your journey; what, when and how did various stages get unlocked (metaphorically) for you in mastering this craft. Thank you once again for all the great content.

  • @pinikpikantv3555
    @pinikpikantv3555 3 месяца назад

    If I have to have 1 lense it would be 24 1.4 GM which acts as 36 1.8 when used on a crop sensor.
    What I wouldn’t sell will be 35 Z 2.8, 55 1.8 and the 90 G 2.8. What I love to have. 100-400 GM. I pass on 135 GM as I learned I can get the reach on a crop sensor body though not much bokeh as the aperture tends to close when cropped so 90 on apsc will give 135 at F3ish or F4ish.

    I only travel with RF 35mm 1.8 and RF 85mm 2.0 and I love it. They are so light and offer good enough results. I used to travel with a bag full of lenses few years ago and I hated it because of the weight. Also I never used more than one or two lenses. I might buy the RF 70-200 F4 if I can find it cheap, and I can't wait for canon to release the RF 24mm 1.8.

    Thanks. Always interesting to see another take on lens choices and reasons why. I have most of these too, but some slight variations.
    Like you I shunned the 24-70 GM original. I bought the 24-105 f4 for a slightly more compact alternative and augmented with fast primes. I then saw, tried and bought the 24-70 GM mkii - lovely and an ideal compliment to the GM 16-35 and GM 70-200 mkii. I'm thinking of selling my 24-105 G as I hardly use, but wonder if it isn't one of better options for video, which I'm trying to get into in a more serious way.
    You clearly love wide's, as I do. I bought the 14mm f1.8 for an ultra wide look, architecture and astro landscape. Now I struggle to decide what/which to pack from 14mm f1.8, 20mm f1.8, 24mm f1.4, 35mm F1.4, 35mm f1.8 and GM 16-35 f2.8. The GM zoom can come on it's own, but then I hesitate packing the others - each of which are arguably better at their own prime length. I really need a caddy!
    I recall earlier wide zooms that I owned and sold 16-35 Sony Zeiss f4, Tamron 16-28mm f2.8 before splurging on the optically better (but alas much heftier) GM 16-35 f2.8.
    I was thinking about buying a PZ 16-35 f4 for lighter travel and video use, augmented by one or more of my wide faster primes and selling my GM. But you have the PZ wide 16-35 and so love the GM 16-35 that you have a second copy after damage to your original. So my question is just when will you travel with the PZ f4 wide rather than the GM f2.8 16-35 if , like me, you also have many/most G/GM wide primes?
    I also have other great glass like the 90mm macro and 135 GM f1.8. Both have optimum use cases but I now choose my 70-200 GM mkii if I can only take one tele/near macro lens. Then I also have a 1.4 and 200-600G so spoilt for choice and impossible to pack and use all.

    • @mrmonday42
      @mrmonday42 Год назад

      Personally, I like bringing no more than 3 lenses anywhere I go. One wide, one standard, and one telephoto. I've narrowed my kit down to the holy trinity, 14mm GM, 20mm G, 35mm GM, and 85mm GM. So when I go out I usually bring one zoom for the range I think I'll need most and then two primes to cover the other two ranges.

    Hi, Pat... I'm a Sony shooter as well... actually selling my Tamron 70-180 2.8 because of the range sometimes is just not enough, when it comes to wildlife photography (which I shoot only 2-3 times a year). The main issue is the lack of autofocus speed, also no stabilization. Would you recommend the 70-200 GM gen II with a 2x teleconverter for ($3350) over the 100-400 GM ($2500)? I own the 16-35 2.8 GM, the 35 1.4 GM, the Sigma Art 85 1.4 and the Sigma Art 24-70 2.8. So I just really need a good versatile telephoto lens for my travel photography trips. @rickymcc8624 Год назад

      Yes, I'd like to know too. GM 16-35 is a lovely lens, but just a bit hefty and now with so many newer lenses having a separate aperture ring, I find I miss that on the GM wide zoom.
      I'm lucky enough to own G/GMs 14 f1.8, 20 f1.8, 24 f1.4, 35 f1.4 and 35 f1.8 as well. All the primes are smaller, lighter, faster than zoom but lack versatility when attempting to travel a bit lighter (ha ha, light is all relative). I was thinking of buying a PZ 16-35 f4 for lighter travel with one or two primes instead of a GM 16-35 so I'd really appreciate knowing more about how others see and/or use the PZ zoom if they, like me, have access to most of Sony's wider lenses?

    Respectfully disagree with picking up the 35mm GM for video work. For static shots it's ok but with the extreme focus breathing, it's not well suited for gimbal work or any shots that involve movement. It's also the only Sony lens that I own that has focus tracking issues (Only in video mode).
