Thanks for your insights, Allison. I travel with a very similar kit: 16-35/4, 35/1.8 Macro and 70-200/4. If I’m feeling adventurous, I may substitute a 50/1.2 for the 35/1.8. Either way, with just three lenses, I find I’m ready for anything.

I just went on vacation. Most of the time I had my older 24-70 f4. I wouldnt shoot faster than f4 because I want the background not too blown out so we can show off the background. My other lens was 28 f2. Awesome for night shots and when I wanted better bokeh. I love these two for travel because they are small and light. Perfect for when Im actually on vacation. Everything else is too heavy and just becomes work. The 24-105 is awesome just too big when Im trying to enjoy nature or disneyland with my kids.

    16-35 GM, 24-105 G, 100-400 GM. For a safari trip I’ll add the 200-600 G and 1.4x teleconverter. For night city scape I’ll add my 24mm 1.4 GM and for a botanical garden the 90mm macro G
I prefer the 24-105 on the 24-70 because of the OSS and reach, truly all around amazing lens

My favourite lenses for travel are the 16-35 F2.8 GM and the 70-200 F2.8 GM2. Using APS mode on the 16-35 I also have effectively 50mm available. For the 70-200 I also take the 2x teleconverter to give me up to 400mm for wildlife. As this is such a fast lens, that still gives F5.6 at 400, the same as the 100-400, so this is a more useful and adaptable lens.

I've shot primes for most of my photographing life. Although it is a pain to change lenses, I love a 24, 50 & 105 combo. I'm not a pro photographer but splurged and have the 24mm 1.4 and 50mm 1.2 G-master lenses for my A7iii. for the 105mm I'm still using a classic Nikon-P 105mm 2.5. Im planing on a trip to New Zealand in 2023 and will for sure take the 24 & 50. I also have the Batis 85mm 1.8 so it will be a battle not to take it and maybe leave the 105mm home.

For just a light kit for travel, I use the Sony 20mm f1.8 g, Sigma 65mm f2 and Sigma 90mm f 2.8. Very small bag. For events, the Tamron 70-180, Tamron 28-75 g2 and Sigma 85mm f1.4. It all depends where you are going and what are going to shoot. What I will say is that you are missing a lens that I love for travel photography - the Sony 24-240mm. Scott Kelby talked about travel zooms in a bunch of videos and it really convinced me to try one. Moment can often be the most important thing in photography - especially when travelling - and not having to change lenses can be priceless (especially when traveling with other people). You should try it :) I typically take a 16-35mm F2.8, 24-70mm F2.8, 35mm and then depending on whether it is a "photo specific" trip - I will take the 100-400mm. Then I choose what I want to take each day / outing.

    • @DanSme1
      @DanSme1 2 года назад

Matched with the a7IV, it surely will rival the f2.8 for IQ if not surpass. I’m sure YT will carry many comparison reviews. ISO 3200 is very clean and usable in low-light situations. For travel, the weight/size benefit will make the PZ highly popular. Given how wide these are, the question is how often f2.8 to f4.0 is really necessary for travel. Seldom,IMO.
With the a7IV, the 24-104 f4.0 has had a revival in popularity.

Unfortunately, photography is just one of my hobbies, so I have far from unlimited funds. My 4 "must have" lenses would be the 16-35 f/2.8 GM, the 24-105 f/4 G, the 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 GM and (for astrophotography) the 14mm f/1.8 GM. This would give me from 16mm to 400mm in just 3 lenses with no gaps. Unfortunately, I only have 3 out of the 4 lenses I listed. For one of them, I ended up with a 3rd party lens due largely to my budget at the time. I might have to have a closer look at the recently announced 16-35 f/4 PZ G. I would also love it if a GM version of the 24-105 lens would be released.

Excellent video and excellent explanation. I have an unrelated question about pronunciation. I’ve noticed that the presenter pronounces the last two or three words of each sentence in a very ‘drawn out’ manner. It’s not a criticism, just curiosity. I’d like to know from which part of the United States that accent or way of speaking comes from. English is not my native language, and I’m trying to learn and distinguish the most common accents of people in the United States. I want to clarify that I’m asking this respectfully and out of curiosity.

Must have lenses when traveling = small enough to fit in a bag, affordable unlike G lenses.

    Sal 16-50 2.8 + a77. And rx100. For travel - it's enough.

You call the 35mm f/1.8 "small and lightweight". You're quite mistaken. It's a chunky prime and weighs over half a kilogram (524 grams). That's not small and lightweight. What is small and lightweight is the Sonnar T* FE 35mm F2.8 ZA, which is only 120 grams - less than a quarter of the f/1.4 model.

There is a huge difference between a travel photographer and a traveling person who takes photos. I have in my arsenal over 10 lenses, covering a spectrum of 12-600mm inclusing several primes.
On our last trip (famly) to florence, I took 12 2.8, 24-240 and the sony 20 1.8. This covers all possible spectrum, all scenarios and the 12 even has a shift adapter for architecture.
Also, the GM lineup is not for everyone (to say the least). carrying almost 6lb of lenses (24-70, 16-35 + 100-400) is NOT lightweight.

    Many thanks -
    My favourite travel lenses are
    1. 28-60
    2. 24-105 f4
2.8 glass is too cumbersome to carry
And if I intend long then will be the 100-400
I don’t own any primes but if I had to have one then it will be the 28mm f2 !

an average of 2,000 euros for a lens plus 2,000 euros for a camera
I prefer to buy a Pentax Spotmatic F with a 50/1.4 lens for 150 euros and give the remaining 3850 for negative films
with 1000 rolls Ilford HP5 plus ....I can create a history
