Did You Know Volkswagens Have VTEC?! (Technically)

- We show you the VW and Audi variable valve lift system and compare them to VTEC. We also explain how VTEC works and the difference between these 2 systems.
Audi variable valve lift started on the CAEB engine found in the Audi A4. This system uses solenoids to shift the cam over to a high lift and duration lobe. Check out this video for a complete explanation of this system.

The fact that Hector is gonna be running three Vw golf’s with Spoon engines. On top of that, he just came into Harry'sm and ordered three T66 turbos with NOS and a Motec system exhaust.
None of that's gonna matter if he can't get those parts overnighted from Germany
My wife never understands why I say “vtec just kicked in yo” in the Tiguan.
Comment Of The Day!!!😂👍
You kill me man🤣🤣
Show her this vid
At what rpm do I say that in the wife's Jetta ?
Asking for a friend.
@@MrTheHillfolk put your foot down, cant miss it
Removes "TSI" logo.
Installs *VTEC* logo...+20 hp.
Removes T out of the "TSI".
Now drives an SI.
James Haulenbeek 😂😂
Omfg!!! I'm going outside and doing this now.
Sharpie marker = new VTEC logo
Break "T" off of "TSi" = Si emblem
Half way there and a little at a time!!
Vanos
So what you are saying is my vw R is the SI R and is the rare Honda since it’s the AWD version 🤔. Lol
Who would’ve thought, the new GTI has Vtec and the new SI doesn’t 🤦♂️
lol
Facts
Neither have VTEC. It is through the emplyment of Variable Timing Control (VTC) that achieves better cylinder filling and exhaust simultaneously (also known as Overlap) to meet emissions standards, power delivery, and most of all efficiency. When CAFE perameters changed gears years ago, VTEC went bye-bye....
Yea but it's got all those cool vents and scoops and spoilers and strakes on it 🤭
@@MegaHollywood1971 the GTI actually does have VVT as well as VVL.
Love it, thanks for the humor and knowledge.
If you want an example of a technically excellent, but over-complicated and expensive design, you should see the VVC (Variable Valve Control) system on an MG-Rover K-series engine... It works on varying the inlet valve duration by using an eccentric drive to modulate the camshaft speed (i.e. it sped up and slowed down throughout a rotation of the camshaft, even if engine speed was constant). Because the speed variation needs to be done on a per-cylinder basis, the four-cylinder K-series had FIVE camshafts; a standard camshaft for the exhaust valves, and two sets of coaxial camshafts for the inlet valves. It also means you have a cambelt on both ends of the engine, as the two rear cylinders are driven off the rear of the exhaust camshaft.
It works brilliantly as it is continuously variable, so you get very linear acceleration and the torque curve doesn't tail off at high rpm, but the system only works reliably up to about 8,000rpm so it gets removed if you are doing a substantial amount of tuning. In my early 20s I remember some of my friends weren't a fan as they liked the noticeable change in engine character as VTEC kicked in yo, but the MG was quicker than their VTECs (none had an S2000 though).
Your sense of humour is right up my alley. I'll never forget the MK 8 review. "Flicking the bean". Love it. Thanks Paul!
Mechanic and comedian in the same time. 2 in 1. Loved the video.
Very nice simple explanation. Always learning new things from Paul. Thanks man
Your videos get better every time, I really enjoyed that one.
In the words of Honda: *plays Chinese audio*
I laughed so hard at that moment😂
Took alot more effort to find a Chinese video explaining VTEC YO. Lol
LOL
Small correction, that was Japanese
@@trancemiro No, Its Mandarin Chinese.
Hell yeah, im taking my GTI to the next JDM car meet 📢
Fantastic video as always Paul! Love the info and was super hilarious. I want that shirt!!! Badass!! 🤘🏼
cant get enough of this channel
Great content as always man! I've been building a R32 on my channel and its been a blast I love the VR6 cars so much! I wish VW would bring it back for one year.
I wish they would bring it back period. The sickest sounding engine once you open it up and let it breath!! Love these cars and engines.
VR6 never went away! VW stuffs it into almost every new Atlas and Cross Sport. I know it's not a golf, but it's wrong to say the VR6 is gone. You can buy brand new VWs with them. The turbo motors are simply the better choice for golfs.
@@IgorNovyk the vr6 was slightly angled or something like that, the new v6 they make isn't. They don't make the vr6 anymore to the best of my knowledge
www.torquingcars.com/tech-talk/differences-between-vr6-and-v6-engine-layout/
@William Jefferson you know the VR6 is still used today by VW? It’s not as common in cars but it’s still used. All I’m saying is spice up the motor lineup.. the 2.0T just sounds like garbage but makes power.. give an option that makes power and sounds good.
@William Jefferson yes agree it would not pass today’s standards and whatnot it’s still a fun car regardless, not everything is about speed and how fast you can go it’s also about the experience you get out of it. After owning both the new cars are just so so easy to drive anyone car do it. No skill is needed and the feel is so numb. I have heard this same comment hundreds of times when people compare the new Golf R to the older generations. But hey that’s my opinion also we both have very different thoughts.
I dont always drive my mk7 GTI, but when I do, vtec kicks in yo!
Getting the sudden urge to install a 6 inch ebay fart can now.
I have two words for you Mister.....
No
Also, Folgers coffee cans work great lol.
Very funny but also informative video Paul! Under reasonable load (say half to full throttle) you can actually feel the transition to the high lift exhaust cam setting very clearly at around 3,200 RPMs. As you said, VTEC mode kicks-in, albeit at very low revs for Honda-engine terms... On stock software, I didn't really notice it, but after stage 2 (loooong time ago) it;s very apparent.
Never laughed so hard, you're the best Paul 😂😂❤️❤️
This is amazing guys! Nothing like learning while laughing.
Laughed, learned and loved it.
“Also, they’re just jokes people don’t get mad”
Best statement ever
Please play this video at your next ShopDap Christmas party. Love the tongue in cheek.

Thanks Paul!
Funny and educational. Perfect type of video

Another great video! had me dying with the honda jokes
very informative
I own a TSI Tiguan 2.0t 4motion and a 94 integra B20b block GSR Vtec head and LS manual transmission stage 3 clutch.. I love both of em
I no longer own a vw but this video made me want to resub. This was pretty damn funny.
🤣🤣🤣 educational and funny. I like the headache reference
This was funny love it !!!
Aw man I went straight from my 1990 EF to a Mk7 GTI. I was wondering why they were no different from each other (except for the price of mods, DAMN!!!)
haha same i had a 1990 crx and upgraded to a mk7 gti about a month ago
Shit ain't cheap for vws , but it lasts.
awesome vid bro! i just got back from my GTI outside and seen this. means more dubs in da vee! dub d-dub dubub bub dub! always wanted that sound from my 4bangers.. now we know!
You can start by check my resonator delete video on the MK7 GTI Clubsport found at my channel. Replaced with Vagsport straight pipe! 👍
This video was super funny 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Best way to lift your variable valve is to do 20 stretches beforehand then start lifting using your core to lift and then vtec will kick in
Der Name des Kanals hat mich irritiert :D
Sick! Time to get a “VTEC just kicked in, Yo!” Decal for my Mk7.5 R 🤣
Yo keep the jokes coming! I love all the DIY videos and reviews but seeing you crack jokes makes it seem like you’re having more fun! Keep it up 👌
HELL YEAH! i always wanted vtec power . it makes sense now what the V stands for in the VW now.

Best video on the channel hahaha
3:15 VW Tech just kicked in yo!

You guys should do an Ebrake adjustment for VW Golf GTI im having issues and rear ebrake sticking on one side.
Hector is going to be running 3 GTI's with VR6's. And on top of that, he just went into Harry's, and he ordered 3 T66 turbos, with NOS. And AWE track exhaust.
YES
What's better, Variable Intake Systems or Variable Valve Timing?
Wait... I just bought GTI parts from shopdap.com yesterday. Crap, should I return them so I can buy them on ebay now? :/ HALP!
Damn it
No, you're supposed to install them on your Honda, silly.
@@someinternetrando4993 But I dont own a Honda. I have a TDI Jetta... Its like a Honda but not.
Squirrel Pope it has VTEC lol
@@thatgirlliani
I love that kind.
So is this variable valve lift only on the exhaust side on the mk7 gti? Or is it on the exhaust and intake side
Loved the sarcasm.
Toyota also has vtec, a bunch of brands do. It's that's hondas valve timing has a unique sound to it.
How does valvetronic and vanos compare then?
Can you talk about BMW VANOS?
Are the cams in the MQBs good enough that the aftermarket hasn't messed with them? Or is getting a cam to function properly with VAG setup to difficult?
They are good enough, wont bother as there's wayyyy more power from bolt-ons
Does my Mk6 Tsi has this system?
EA888 gen 2 with AVL gang here!
The beat at the end is soooooo dope yo!!!! Anyone got the name for it??
Does the 3.6 VR6 use any sort of vvt or no?
Das gut scheisse lol slowly learning deutsch lol liked the video buddy
does the 1.6 tdi have this vtec thing?
I was curious what those silver cylinder shaped things were on top of the engine towards the firewall. Now i know, to activate VTEC YO👍😎
Good shit! LOL “You have a civic”! LMAO!
OK your high lobe classic car blub blub sound is A+ high grade. Worth it just to hear you go blub blub blub.
i know the gti and r exhaust camshaft are different. but do they have vtec?
what about the b cycle engines
Thanks for the laugh 😂
Except the difference between the v-tec that alters valve timings and the ACT system is that the latter system is utilized to switch off two cylinders during low load. VW does not utilize ACT system to accomplish any performance gains but to provide gains in economy.
I LIVE MY LIFE A QUARTER MILE AT A TIME!!!!!
Damnit!! What am I supposed to do now, i was kicked from eBay and can't buy anything for my VTEC now. I guess I gotta go back to the Folgers coffee can exhaust tips and the paint roller pans for a hood scoop. Thank God for 2-sided tape, duct tape and super glue. Next on the list.... 5 color paint jobs. 🤘🤘
Haven't started watching this yet but this is the funniest thing to see a Honda guy say. It isn't even just VW, variable valve timing is everywhere and it's a gas saving measure ffs
Haha. You’re VW is just a Civic. Well I’m off to Autozone to buy some neons. It’s been nice doing business with y’all.
V-TECH JUST KICKED IN ON MY VW GOLF YO
Wonder which one will blow up first though 😂 8k all day said no VW ever lol still a funny vid
Why would you put a R23 badge on it while it doesn't have any VR (5/6) engine in it?
BTW this animation for the TSI engine is not correct. You can clearly see it form VCDS logs. You can easily hit 5-5.5 ms injection time at 5500 rpm, and at these rpm`s compression stroke takes only 2.7 ms. So it's obvious, that your injector keep injecting during the intake stroke, compression stroke, and it looks like that it keeps sending some fuel even during the combustion stroke.
That audio was in Chinese.. Not Japanese.
When did he claim it to be japanese?
Please Help!
I have a 2018 1.8tsi golf and its making noises...
The First noise is like a surging whine. It comes and goes and isn't tied to the RPM. It is very quiet and I can only hear it in the cabin when it is happening. Kinda sounds like a power steering pump but it isn't steering related.
The second noise sounds just like the "Gnome in your dashboard" when the AC air direction motor fails with a few differences. It comes as a SINGLE plastic knock, its coming from the front of my engine and it has something to do with the shut down cycle. I'll turn the car off, it will make its usual wind down noises but then there will be 1 loud plastic SNAP, OR the sound of a struggling electric motor. I've heard the loud snap while driving late at night with the windows down too.
PLEASE HELP
Vanos (bmw), my favorite is MIVEC 2.0 t
Sounds good and all but my 2016 1.8T sure does fall flat around 5000ish rpm in stock form but it revs to 6800 I think....aint nothing happening way up there to even care.
What RPM does it kick in on the newer 2.0T? I have a 19 GLI...
3100 just heard it
HAHA... Jokes people, don't get mad. Love it, great job.
Lol very funny. Thanks
Once a kid at the McDonalds drive through looked at me in my new mk7 GTI, and he said, "Have you hit V-tech?" LOL! (Also, should I be experiencing unicorns and rainbows when I drive my VW now? I mean, if the man says I have V-Tech....)
I wonder if my 2019 1.4 TSI Jetta has this lmao
Just attach the F’n valve to a solenoid and you have full timing and lift control with a fraction of the weight and complexity.
its called free valve, and it still cant hit mass production, because its hard to make efficient solenoid with a fast enough response for high rpm while also allowing for high valve lift
You killed me today....
Let’s say I’m cruising at a high speed in my 16’ R, because of the short gears I could be over 3100rpm. Does that mean these solenoids are active the whole time? Anyone know?
my 2013 cc is a honda great
So wheres the golf alltrack head swap from the eu market
Had a turbo swap and someone didnt clean the solenoids when putting them back in. Misfires everywhere and I had to replace all 8. Now I have some kind of vacuum leak. Rip
I was just explaining this to my girlfriend Lol. I have a k20 integra and a mk7 GTI, and she asked me why it sounds like the GTI has vtec too. 😂
I think nissan had the neo vvl engine. So maybe were closer to a nissan.
so, does the 1.8 TSI have the same mechanism?
Yeah 3:30
No 1.8t doesn't, for the north American version anyway. Also it has variable valve timing on the exhaust side only. ROW has valve lift on some of their 1.8t.
Y U mad Brah? #VTECPowahhhhhh!
That was in chinese not japanese 2:30
Who said it was japanese?

Cool
Your GTI is now a Civic... lol
TSI kicked in Yoh!
I’m now getting even more left behind as a Spanner Monkey!!!
I used to puff my chest out back in the day with my skills, now I’m officially a Dinasaur!!!
I don’t even think the manufacturers are trying to stop us mear mortals working on cars!
The technology needed to meet the requirements of low-zero emissions is even leaving them wanting as rerquards to modern engine design!!!
