4ws is amazing, you could zip in and out of lanes at 90mph so easy - no weight being thrown around, 90 degree turns at 30mph scares the life out of on coming traffic, the old non electric systems were better (
It's actually safer than with normal front wheel steering. When you make sharp turns in relatively high speed, rear wheels begin to slide and you lose control of the back of the car, 4ws prevents that and wheels remain in touch with the ground and so you can make safe and stable turns in higher speed than with a normal car. 3gen Prelude holds a world record in slaloming race btw :)
yes a very big difference, ive owned 3 preludes 2 sis and one VTEC. and i drove a 4ws si before and the turning on stock suspension is amazing. takes turns a lot smoother
I owned one for years, The only advantage on such short wheel base car was backing up down a long winding driveway. I had way more control missing bushes.
idk why so many people thumbed u down. you are right about what u said when it comes to higher speeds though. at low speeds it makes sharp turns easier and faster. at high speeds the back wheels will spin in the direction of the front wheels instead of the opposite. this makes the car stable even at 30+ MPH and more effective in turning.
@bombardier420 LX, Si, VTEC, 4WS Si. Those are trims, but i guess you could call them "options". Options are navigation, sunroof, leather, heated seats, rear spoiler, foglights, 18in rims, etc. etc. Yea the prelude was sure built with handling in mind. The CB7 accord EDM, JDM, AUDM models also had 4WS as an actual option, not trim.
@pianofolks1 It should have a 4WS badge on the steering wheel or on the trunk hood, but the best way to find out is to check if the rear wheels move when you rotate the steering wheel.
Crazy to hear they made them for so long in other markets. U.S. only got the 4ws (with a 2.3L non-vtec) for the very first year (1992) then they dropped it and introduced the 2.2 VTEC to the U.S. (alongside the 2.3 non-vtec Si)... Still trying to find one in good condition. As far as i know this is still the only 4ws car ever made with a fully mechanical steering system.
This thing is too cool and I thought the only car with this was the fast and furious 6 flip car but then I saw a video and then saw this of a prelude with 4 wheel steering
I Had the local honda Shop Check it out and my computer would work every now and then. so that is why it didn't work. The 4ws light was also burnt out. It works Great now!!
It is called rear wheel steering. In off road trucks & racing or monster trucks it is run by a completely diff system. It is not by steering wheel but instead activated by a switch :P
Many cars have passive 4ws & the owners don't know about it, such as the Mazda MX-3. As the suspension's compressed, the rear wheels turn slightly. Obviously it's not as dramatic as what's shown here, but really aids handling just the same.
Not all cars. In addition if a does have rear steering they can vary greatly. There is high speed, low speed, both high or low speed and electronic or mechanical set ups. Its just like saying a power steering is a power steering. Not so since there is electric assist, hydraulic, full electric (drive by wire) and variable assist capability. Not as simple as dismissing a car having some form of 4 wheel steer to all be the same.
what smooth and going exactly where they're suppose to? if thats how you mean id agree. and what great race car do you own that corners so much better?
no unfortunatly not all preludes have 4ws. the benifit of the wheels turning the same way at speed is they assume you will not be making really sharp corners at speed instead miner corners kinda like changing lanes which makes them turning in the same direction more effecient.
Thanks, I was just thinking of when it came out 20 years ago and wondering why it didn't take off. BTW you shouldn't steer when car is stationary, it's hard on tires and steering linkage.
Steering without moving is called "dry steering". It's only a problem with heavier vehicles, like large pickups and industrial vehicles, such as construction and public-safety vehicles.
@7MOHD7 Dude, what do you want me to do? Film it? I got convinced, when I first drove a 4WS Prelude, maybe you should test-drive one too. Here's a wiki quote (if counts): "In 1987, Road & Track published a test summary that shows the 1988 Honda Prelude 2.0Si 4WS outperforming every car of that year on the Slalom, including all Lamborghinis, Ferraris, and Porsches. It went through the slalom at 65.5 mph (105.4 km/h). For reference, the 1988 Corvette took the same course at 64.9 mph (104.4 km/h)."
@BaddaBigBoom citroen did something better. it had 4 trundle wheels that lifted the car slightly off the ground and moved sideways into a park. never took off though and i don't know much about it other than that. it actually could have been renault but i'm fairly sure it was citroen...
I have a question... I drive a 3000GT. Why does the rear wheel turn in the same direction on the 3000GT but on a Prelude the wheels turn the opposite. It seems like the Prelude's steering is more logical in the sense that when you turn, your rear wheels will follow the path of a circle... any ideas?
Never knew this was an option on any honda. Or is this aftermarket? When you get up to highway speeds, do they still turn opposite directions, or do they turn the same way??
Hey i've got an AUDM '96 prelude vti-r, the 4 wheel steering doesnt work, the rear wheels dont move. Is there a light in the dash that displays a faulty 4ws unit? if there is a light, its not on. Any ideas??
I had one like this, it made parking extremely easy, and so did winding roads! nothing scary about it! It was activated all the time, there was no switch button
I had one like this, it made parking extremely easy, and so did winding roads! nothing scary about it! It was activated all the time, there was no switch button
hey guys.. im thinking of getting a honda prelude (the 99 model vti-r)... just wondering if anyone could tell me if they think 4 wheel steer is beter or worse.. and if it feels awkward or abnormal whilst driving it... plz reply!!! :D
do you have a 5speed? because I have a auto and I've have tried every thing to get the 4ws to work while standing still. I can feel it while driving. I just want to know if my 4ws is broken or if its just a auto thing. Thanks
@sexyboi142. Trim level is an option, your just talkin symantics now, hahahah. That's neat tho. I figured after acertain speed they would turn the same way
I had some shitty times with four wheel steering. while going over 80 or so on the highway when theres grooves in the pavement.. you have no control basically so sketch your ass end is everywhere!
yeah the 4 wheel steering is very useful here in japan tight corners and bad parking spots i own a 4ws lude 93 JDM vtec it drives like a much more expensive the cornering in this car is incredible. most any other car in high speed tight corner feels like itll let go but this car no its glued go 4ws rhd
@x2xtreme360 Hahaha after that stupid question you asked it's clear you don't know anything, my family owns 3, 2 sl's and a vr4 and I've parted out a few stealths, my best friend has a vr4 and my next closest friend has a stealth tt, you wouldn't even have a chance lol
I had one like this, it made parking extremely easy, and so did winding roads! nothing scary about it! Wrong, its in newer cars today!!! Watch at the 1:23 mark, hell Google it is in newer cars, your comment was 5 years ago. Automobiles have come a long way

@center660
In high speeds they turn in the same direction for more stability. In low speeds, for sharper angle, smaller turning circle.
yes a very big difference, ive owned 3 preludes 2 sis and one VTEC. and i drove a 4ws si before and the turning on stock suspension is amazing. takes turns a lot smoother

cool. thanks for posting that. I never saw one of these 4WS vehicles in action.
Must be easy to parallel park.
@bombardier420 LX, Si, VTEC, 4WS Si. Those are trims, but i guess you could call them "options". Options are navigation, sunroof, leather, heated seats, rear spoiler, foglights, 18in rims, etc. etc.

IT IS ALIVE!!!!!
That's crazy and I'm a Honda fan I didn't know that it did that 🤘👍
Yes you are right... It's super natural!!
@bombardier420 it was not an option, it was a trim level. At higher speeds they turn in the same direction as the front wheels

pretty neat stuff...
my 96 didnt have it but i did hear about the 93 having it as an option , but rare to see
@buckhunter014 4wd means that all of the wheels drive the car 4 wheel steering is wat you saw in the video.
Feel free to correct me if im wrong
It is called rear wheel steering. In off road trucks & racing or monster trucks it is run by a completely diff system. It is not by steering wheel but instead activated by a switch :P
+devastatoreable this is called 4ws not 4wd
+estXcrew He was talking about 4wd not 4ws, 4wd and 4ws are 2 different things
+estXCrew Pay attention. He was referring to it correctly.
thats fucking insane!!! so awesome!
My Dream Car …🤔 And I had 2 Yes Two 😎🏴😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I love it!
everyone wants one now
Yes it does!
@riverviewpowerhouse well they have to be bought before but as others said this rare and hard to get
Many cars have passive 4ws & the owners don't know about it, such as the Mazda MX-3. As the suspension's compressed, the rear wheels turn slightly. Obviously it's not as dramatic as what's shown here, but really aids handling just the same.
omfg thats trippy
...got the turning circle of a London taxi!
Not all cars.

Fuckk that would make parallel parks so much easier !!
congrats u got ur self a forklift
that is so fucking cool
Cool, I heard about it but never seen how it works.
what smooth and going exactly where they're suppose to?
if thats how you mean id agree.

Acura currently uses a new version of it... That's actually what lead me to looking this up
@xXShadowRejectsXx they do
who else whispered "what the fuck"
woah, that's a huge angle. the HICAS system does 5º at best.
the 4 wheel steering is blocked when you are over 40 mph or km/h,i don't remember
seems like backin up is fun haha
Thanks, I was just thinking of when it came out 20 years ago and wondering why it didn't take off.
BTW you shouldn't steer when car is stationary, it's hard on tires and steering linkage.
Dude it was a demo, it's not like he always does that I'm sure.
Steering without moving is called "dry steering". It's only a problem with heavier vehicles, like large pickups and industrial vehicles, such as construction and public-safety vehicles.
So thats what it looks like! I dont have 4WS on mine, does it really make a difference?
@samuelleonard Wow, thank you, i didn't knew this.
Whats the benefit of them turning the same way
at speed but opposite not when its slow?
@7MOHD7 Dude, what do you want me to do? Film it? I got convinced, when I first drove a 4WS Prelude, maybe you should test-drive one too. Why is this not still used??? Imagine the maneuvers you could do controlling all four wheels...
it is now lol
it is now lol
Why don't we make all cars like this?
or Rear-wheel steering? i wonder how that would go on freeway speeds.
thats fuckin nutts!!
sucks that they stopped making this
I put tein suspension kit on it 90mm of the road went round corners ….💨
@BaddaBigBoom citroen did something better. it had 4 trundle wheels that lifted the car slightly off the ground and moved sideways into a park. never took off though and i don't know much about it other than that. it actually could have been renault but i'm fairly sure it was citroen...
HOnda actually started using 4ws back in the 1980's on the prelude. THis is not new folks!
I have a question... I drive a 3000GT. Why does the rear wheel turn in the same direction on the 3000GT but on a Prelude the wheels turn the opposite. Makes parking easy ay
where is the switch to activate the 4WS?
I had one like this, it made parking extremely easy, and so did winding roads! nothing scary about it! It was activated all the time, there was no switch button

imagine doing donuts in that
prelude dancing much?
for some reason that makes me uncomfortable

And Renault is barking out with their new Megane RS that will have the advanced technology of 4 wheel steering XD
Does this have a different feel to regular 2 wheel steering ? and who did you buy it from .. i heard they are really rare..
lol @center660 owned!
All wheel drive buddy
What other model was it using 4ws, legend or something!?
Id like to drive one though!
why doesnt every car have this.
do all preludes come with 4 wheel streer? or just the JDM ones
what is the point in 4 wheel steering guys?
@sexyboi142. Trim level is an option, your just talkin symantics now, hahahah. That's neat tho. I figured after acertain speed they would turn the same way
@racinghonda aren't these kind of rare? i've never seen one in real life
waht type of preludes have 4ws? is it SI? or a specific 4ws model?
I had some shitty times with four wheel steering.
while going over 80 or so on the highway when theres grooves in the pavement..
you have no control basically so sketch your ass end is everywhere!
300zx was 4ws too?
3000gt vr4 also
hows the turn radius on that? like 0? lol
more precise turns =]
@PrimericanIdol Badly.
looks like the front turns more than the rear :/
Are all 1992 preludes 4ws?
yeah the 4 wheel steering is very useful here in japan tight corners and bad parking spots
i own a 4ws lude 93 JDM vtec it drives like a much more expensive the cornering in this car is incredible. most any other car in high speed tight corner feels like itll let go but this car no its glued
go 4ws rhd
I bet that would be a nightmare to align.
When oh when are they going to invent a car that can do 90 degree 4WS so we can just pull up to a parking space and slide right in ! (?)
whatttttttttttttt
Jealous. That must be an autox beast.
that scares me
Just imagine how sharp it could turn if it was RWD.
@Mitsubishi3kgt If you want to compare the amount of knowledge I have on the car compared to yours, we can do that. You would get schooled my friend.
@x2xtreme360 Sell your 3000gt for asking such a dumb question, only people that know anything about cars should drive one.
Wtf....
WTF ew
fail.
Another fad that never caught on...
It's coming back now...
I had one like this, it made parking extremely easy, and so did winding roads! nothing scary about it! Wrong, its in newer cars today!!! Watch at the 1:23 mark, hell Google it is in newer cars, your comment was 5 years ago. Automobiles have come a long way
