    Every time I see the dome from the outside, I think it looks eerily familiar. Finally figured it out. It reminds me of the ham costume that Scout wore for the halloween play in To Kill a Mockingbird. It's partly the color and partly the rounded shapes. lol Ashley you are amazing!!

    Hi. I have built six domes, and found that the rammed earth bagged domes are very labor-intensive. I developed an inexpensive reusable form system for 4 ft tall walls, and then made bricks to stack against a compass in the center of the circle to make a hemispherical dome. All in all, a 12-ft diameter dome can easily be put together in 4 weeks with two people. And there's no cost for the bags. If you want to make more domes without breaking your labor, let me know. Kat

    It almost seems impossible for that heavy, heavy plaster to hold on as good as it does, ....but it will!. I tend to think of chicken wire when it comes to projects like this but that would probably be wrong.

    in masonry the reason for dampening previously laid mortar/plaster/cement wet stuff that *****CURES**** not hardens to solid is to prevent the dry masonry from absorbing the catalyst "water" from the hydration reaction and weakening the end product by incomplete hydration . your playing with mud that will not set but dry with a cement additive that will so it shouldent be necessary to add moisture to dry masonry to stop it dehydrating your wet mix as 90% of it is not catalyzing just drying . thanks for the videos hope the info helps

    I get nervous when I see the Small non-casement windows...wondering how you would exit the dome in a fire/smoke situation, if for some reason, you couldn't get out the door. We do not have good fire response where we live so we are very restrictive about open flame, like candles, in the house. We also keep fire extinguishers and fire blankets at hand. Love seeing your projects come to life. ❣

    • @TinyShinyHome

    Oh Ashley, I bet your hands got super dry with all that mud. I heard Jonathan questioning about spraying the walls down before applying the mud, but my question was you all have put chicken wire on the exterior to help hold the mud in place and I'm wondering what's going to hold the mud in place on the interior since you did not do chicken wire? It sure looks awesome and I hope your hands made it through ok. Can't wait to see it when it's finished. You have worked so hard, as always, so I know it will be beautiful!

    • @TinyShinyHome
      @TinyShinyHome  5 месяцев назад +2

      We only put chicken wire on the outside to strengthen the stucco and keep it from cracking. If you go look back we put multiple coats directly on the bags first, and Hayden explains how the weave in the bag allows it to connect.

    Yay, Levi is helping again! Your arms must get tired putting that chinking up so high! It must be satisfying to cover the wall with cob. The chinking done does look nice! Wow, you go Ashley! That wall looks great that you did with the one batch of cob! Adali should be so happy! That idea to use the animal trough worked great. I was worried that bending down would be hard but you made it look easy. Jax is so funny! What a straight face. You know he's laughing on the inside. I think he shot up in height! I know you're the "Master Plaster" so I know you're an expert in applying cob! "Embrace the mud." That's nice that you don't have to wet the wall down. Wow, it looks so good! I heard the echo as soon as you finished the cob inside. Too bad about the cob falling down on your head. Cool, pouring the steps into the dome next time! Too bad they didn't have concrete. I'm glad to hear that Jonathan is doing a talk about alternative building methods. Thanks so much for this video Longnecker family!
