    All @ 38:40 I accidentally said, "generally the further out the more change (movement) you're going to get from the same amount of output on your servos" - I said this part backward. What I meant to say was ..."the FURTHER IN, the more the movement will be"... My apologies for any confusion this may have caused anyone.

    I bought the same some weeks ago as a first plane. Very simple to get started!! It can fly incredibly slow in safe mode. I am now running in advanced when I fly but I prefer safe when landing or when going really slow. When I go out I have 4 220mah batteries and I get 1 almost an hour of flying. I suggest putting the battery as far forward as possible. As a beginner it took maybe 8 batteries to begin feel somewhat ok with advanced mode. I have flown about 20 batteries now and still have to panic into safe sometimes 😀 this plane teach me to fly without a simulator and without costing lots of cash in repairs, yet, thanks to safe :)

      You sound like me when I started. Do you lust for flying when you see a flag hanging down to the ground? That was me. I'd be driving and watching the flag still in the atmosphere and I'd be dying to get home to fly!!!
      So glad my planes can handle more wind now-a-days; but what a way to learn!!!

    This was my first airplane also, (not counting the Cox Stuka gas lanyard plane I got as an 11 year old, which I never flew) and it has taught me a lot. I moved up to a UMX Timber to fly in windier conditions. Both great models! I'm going to let my grandson try the Sport Cub S for his first flight. As far as those who wish they were brushless, I don't think it would fly as slow, and that's the beauty of this model. You don't want speed when you're learning. Keep up the great content!

    Hey Brian, man I just wanted to tell you thank you. I find my self turning to your videos alot. Your like that friend everyone has or should have that you turn to when you have not a clue what you are doing lol . I've been into the rc hobby for 15 years and now just getting into planes and your videos have been life savers. Especially setting up my NX6 to the yellow eflite t-28, apprentice sts, and sport cub (more to come im sure). So again i can't thank you enough sir for what you do! Keep up the good work! Thanks Brian! I know this is an older video but it was just what I needed to setup my Sport Cub S with my first hobby grade/programable TX. I got the NX8 delivered to me yesterday (which BTW I ordered thru Amazon using your Amazon link) and after a few hours of playing around could not find a Preset for this Cub. I did a YT search and found this video and followed along, with a lot of starts. stops and rewinds, and was able to bind my Sport Cub S 2 and NX8.
    I used a different switch for the modes in order to match my RF9.5 simulator controller. I reversed the throttle cutoff switch because to my Polish mind it just makes more sense.
    I've got an new unboxed UMX Turbo Timber to bind and since its in the radio will use the Preset for the model - wish me luck. That'll be tomorrow because right now this 76 year old brain feels fried and in need of a glass or two of wine. 😊
    Also got a FT Simple Cub built that has been waiting for me to get a TX and RX. Got a Lemon RX on order and think I've seen an older video of yours where you do a Lemon receiver setup. I'll need to find it again to help me through that setup. Will also need help getting through my first time setting rates, mixes, sub trims, etc., etc. AND I've got to get this all done before Alzheimer's sets in! 😊 [Maybe shouldn't joke about something like that?]
    Thanks once again to you Brian and your camera crew.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 года назад +1

      Bill K - I'm so glad you got it. Keep in mind, with the NX8, you will have so much stuff you can do, you'll be able to fly virtually anything! The drinking-inducing first crack at setting up the plane will be an investment in your next planes!!! I promise you'll be glad you did it, but it will be a challenge for a while. So smooth, and very refined, I trust you'll LOVE the improvement you get with it!

You have been giving me great advice on the UMX series the last week or so. Thank you. As for the indoor flying that you mentioned a little earlier this evening. Just bought this plane a couple days ago. Got it out in "safe" mode throttled up it went straight up 30-40 feet and nosed dived into the ground. Checked and made sure I was in safe mode and it repeated this time hitting the pavement and breaking the nose cone off and the nose of the plane cracked....Trimmed it with the controller and got it to fly kind of... Checked the CG and its tail heavy with the battery all the way forward.
    Picked up Foam safe CA (got to love foam) fixed everything and now going to get the CG right. I can't wait to see a nice day to fly it now. I should have known better and checked but I didn't even think about it being off with all of what I had heard about the plane.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  2 года назад

      Bill - so glad you're taking the plunge! Remember a few things...
      1) Don't give up when you crash - you WILL!
      2) Fly a LOT. Fly enough that your wife has to tell you to stop - this will quicken the learning curve.
      3) Buy glue - you'll need it ;)
      4) When the plane stops working because it's too heavy (from glue) - get the next plane.
      5) You will not believe me know, or after your first few flights, but you will be a competent flier in a few short months, if you fly a lot. You are 100% responsible for how FAST you learn. Muscle memory will not go away fast, but it takes a LONG time to get it down.
      6) Don't get down on yourself if you make a mistake - you will - just learn from every crash, every stall, every bouncy landing. You will soon have less and less errors to correct.
      7) KEEP LEARNING - when this stops, you'll cease to be flying ;)
      Good luck!

    Thank you, your video convinced me this was a great starter for me, I have one issue with motor mounting … there is nothing supporting the top side of the mounting tabs … I added two small pieces of 5mm thick foam 1/2” squares on either side of the motor so when the fuselage is together the two foam pieces rest on the inside of the top of the fuselage and brace the motor from NOSE IN landings that happen in grass landings. I have two of these planes now and I love them for a grab and fly planes. My wife has bought me a Horizon Apprentice S 2 for Christmas and I am looking forward to flying a larger plane, but I live in Michigan and the winters can be very long and windy. Your long review of the Apprentice S 2 convinced me that the Apprentice S 2 was my next plane. I am still a beginner with about 20 to 30 hours actual air time flying FT Easy planes with twin pushers and differential thrust to control flight and wanted to try control surfaces that I actually control. The Sport Cub S 2 is the perfect next step. … you are way better than RC Saylors!

    Brian, Thank you for a great Cub s2 video.
    picked up the cub at a garage sale.. "gave up flying it because it kept getting in the trees".. don't really understand that logic.
    I am an old sailplane, sport and mini plane pilot. Have been using my jr10x since new (long time ago) and then segue into the 9303 with the 9ch DSM2 module/9503.. my dad had the 7202 and then DX7. Programming in that was the same as the early dx6 and similar to the 9303 and 9503
    None of the old or new modules will work with this "new" Horizon chip and none of the older stand alone TX of the past will work with it either...
    This little beast forced me to make the switch to the DX9 black.
    You have the advantage of only working with new Spectrum programming. Your style of explaining with the errors built in are incredibly helpful. There are so many new features incorporated into the radio that I have been struggling to make the jump to flight speed!
    Your demonstration of the safe and the 3 modes were very helpful.
    I linked to your battery link and picked up the higher capacity pack.. there is now a higher 45C battery (Tiny whoop probably) that may fit and give a little extra oomph for pulling the floats.
    Already had that charger.. your dead on the money with it, works pretty much anything that is on the market today and does it safely.

    Hey Brian, I just picked up a Sport Cub S. I have two 150mAh batteries that have been sitting around since my Blade Micro Heli days. Thought they were dead and gone. Wouldn’t take a charge. I got out my Spektrum Micro Lopo charger, SPMXC1040 to see if it would charge the batteries. No luck… until I tried to charge another 1S battery with it. No luck so I thought. The second battery on the same channel gave a boost to my old 150mAh pack. I then transferred the 150’s to my Celectra charger and WHAMMO. They took off charging. Thanks for the tip of using another Lopo to kick start what was thought to be a dead and down battery!!!!!🤘

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  2 года назад

      You can usually cheat some voltage into them with another battery and then they'll "Equalize" but just gotta be careful...the solder on the connectors CAN melt if it's too FAST, which is how I burned my fingers when I was just getting into the hobby a few years ago ;) LOL - fortunately, I threw the 1S pack into the sink, and soldered the lead back on and no problemo ;)

    Flew this for the first time today with my jumper t8sg. I ran out of trim for the rudder and it was slowly turning left the whole time. I had to do a mechanical adjustment when I came home. I’m sure it will fly great next time, maybe better in a little less wind too. Was about 8-10 mph gusts today. My first plane was a Volantex sport cub 500, that’s a great plane to learn on too. Started flying about a year ago.

      @@BrianPhillipsRC when I turned the plane on and bound it the rudder was about 1/4 to the left. It took all the right trim in the transmitter to get it to almost center, but the plane still made a slow left turn. I did buy the plane pre owned so maybe the pushrod adjustment point got bent out slightly. I just squeezed it a bit with some pliers.

    I wound up getting this plane. Have had about a dozen crashes, 3 or four "tree" landings and have logged about 160 flights. Something like half om my crashes and tree landings were due in big part to flying with to much wind and the other half just rookie stuff. I can also recommend this model as a first plane - just don't fly it on windy days. Most days in my area are calm just after sunrise and just before sunset.
    I just bought RF9.5 instead of an RC Plane upgrade. Will have fun and learn on the simulator this Fall and Winter and get a new/upgraded plane come next Spring.

      @BillKisel 3 года назад

      @@BrianPhillipsRC Now as I think about it I probably did have more crashes. I should also log/count my crashes and not just my flights. I don't make that mistake anymore.

    I tried moving the pushrod to a different hole on the elevator control horn but I couldn't figure out how to 'unlink' the rod to move it. So I tried bending the little tip of the rod to straighten it in order to get it out of the current hole. Mistake - it broke off. Now the pushrod isn't connected anymore. What SHOULD I have done to remove the pushrod from the control horn, and HOW do I fix it now? Do have to buy the replacement pushrod set or can I just widen the 'bend' adjustment to give the the extra length I need and put an 'S' curve on the tip, then reattach? (The pushrod and horn part is not currently in stock at HH). Thanks!

    Can you comment on transmitter antennas relating to the direction that the antenna is pointing. I discovered that there is a "cone of silence" extending directly out from the tip of the antenna pointing to the plane that will cause a loss of signal to/from the plane witch causes no control inputs until the angle of the antenna is moved to a more perpendicular angle to the plane. Is this your observation also?

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  4 года назад

      yes, but it's so inconsequential, that you may never actually worry about it. If you're radio system is compromised, then you may run into issues, but otherwise, fly on and prosper ;)
      What you need to keep an eye on, if flying too far away with this or other planes that use the "Batman" style transmitter, as it's not a "full range" transmitter....thus you may lose contact a few hundred feet away...but we would consider that "beyond line of sight".
      If you're concerned, fly out and in front of you, and not over head.Keep the antenna pointing Upright, and you will maximize you're chances of success. Good luck!

The nose want come down. (Panicked a bit), there was „maybe“ a slight wind (3mph). It was not a good flight. Try it tomorrow again. But I was not able to just fly streight a head. Do you have any advice?

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 года назад

      Okay, the right stick, when you pull DOWN, this will cause the nose to go UP, and when you push the right stick UP, this will cause the nose to go DOWN... This is typical and correct. Might as well get used to it, since it's the way things work in MODE2 (the type of system many use world wide...but there is also MODE1, and more, lesser used layouts like Mode 3 and 4, etc.)
      Pointers....practice a LOT!!! You will need it, but you can do it

    Hey Brian, I hope you and your awesome Camara crew are both doing well...... I have a possibly dumb question...... I'm using my Spektrum ix20se transmitter and noticed on my display that shows all the input channels status, that my "D" switch is moving the gear/gyro channel and my flight "B" switch is moving my aux2 channel, do you know what the aux2 channel controls, or what it's used for? ....thanks

      It's been a really long time since I worked with the Sport Cub S UMX, so I can't actually recall. What you can do it go to Channel Assign, and see what's set for those items.
      I suspect the Aux 2 turns acts as PANIC possibly?

    I’ve been flying cub no problems. Till last outing. I would take off in safe and fly around normally then I would put in intermediate mode and plane would immediately nose drive straight down to ground. I would quickly hit switch back to safe and it would right itself. I was showing my buddy and it did same thing. This time though while it was nose diving in intermediate I panicked and instead of going to safe I went to advanced and cub nose dived full throttle straight into ground. Smash. So i glued nose area back together so I’ll try and fly. So any ideas why from safe to intermediate or advanced it goes straight into ground? Never did this before.

      Your trim is off A LOT. You gotta fix it in Intermediate or Advanced mode, not in SAFE. This is almost certainly what's going on.

      yes, only issue is that I don't KNOW if you can have it bound to both planes. You might have to rebind each time you flip between planes....that being said, the binding procedure on the UMX planes is SUPER easy, and doesn't require any plugs, so I'd go for it!

    Hi Brian I know this vid is 2 yrs old but my son is now 9 and I’m finally able to let him fly and this vid was helpful. I have a few questions. I’m setting the sport cub s on a dx8. I can’t get the 3 modes to work-beg,int, and adv. Also I have the charger for these batteries but is there a way to check their current voltage. I have a LiPo checker for a bigger size LiPo but what about these little umx ones. Thanks a bunch

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  Год назад

      You can use a DMM (Digital Multi-Meter) or you can make an adapter and use a VOLTAGE CHECKER / ALARM something like these - VDC Alarm amzn.to/3GZk3r9 - along with an adapter you can put into the super tiny pins of the 1S packs.
      You might find it easier to just get one of these for this and any future 1S planes...
      S44 4X 1S Charger bit.ly/3RVtKxm
      S63 6X 1S Charger bit.ly/3PLc05R
      ...which also show the voltage
      To be totally honest, I don't know if there's three modes still... I know this model comes with SAFE, but it's been just long enough I can't remember if it's SAFE SELECT or [FULL] SAFE. SAFE SELECT would be AS3X and SAFE, with no intermediate mode... You go into FORWARD PROGRAMMING and make the assignments now-a-days, if you need too, but on the Sport Cub S2, I believe you don't even have to do it, it's just ON from the beginning on GEAR Channel (again, speaking from memory, and applying what's changed since we made this exact video...some things HAVE changed)

    I just got the RTF model today and the instructions do not mention what you said in passing at about 50:00 that you need to have the transmitter on first or it will not communicate with the plane as indicated by a blue light. However, I don't where folks are getting their flight times, but I can't seem to get more than 3-4 minutes out of the 1s provided batteries. Not enough time for anyone to learn anything. I've read about battery upgrades, but still see reference to 1s flight times much longer than I'm getting. And I don't fly agressively. Any suggestins?

    @BillKisel 4 года назад +4

    High Brian. I've posted these two questions to Horizon Hobby on there S 2 live introduction video but thought I might have a better chance of getting them answered by you. So, if you don't mind..
    !. Hi, I recently got one of these planes (the S 2) and have reviewed this video and a bunch of others several times. I've not found any discussion of the use of the High and Low rates that get activated by pushing the right stick down. Does this control the amount of travel of the control surfaces or the speed at which the control surfaces will move? Thanks.
    2. My S 2 flies beautiful in SAFE but goes into a diving left turn when I switch from SAFE to intermediate. The plane will hand glide straight and with a shallow decent in SAFE. When hand glided in intermediate or experienced modes same thing - dives and goes left. If I trim the plane for/in intermediate will it then screw up my really nice SAFE flying characteristics? Do I trim out the turning with ruder or aileron trim? Thanks.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  4 года назад +2

      1) Yes, High and Low rates will change the maximum amount of travel to all surfaces, in ALL modes. I don't typically talk about this, because I also forget about it every time the camera rolls - LOL - Sorry about that!!!
      2) That's a trim issue. You must trim the plane OUT of SAFE. Then when you activate SAFE (Beginner mode) you will enjoy the SAFE functions, and when you turn them off, the plane will also fly well. This is a bit of a misnomer for a new RC pilot, since you probably need SAFE to fly, therefore it's a high order for a new pilot. If you can, get a more experience pilot to help you out for this step.
      2B) You'll trim Rudder for YAW...if it turns to the left or the right (FLAT). You'll trim AILERON for ROLL, but the rudder and ailerons will impact both roll and yaw. This effect is exaggerated with SAFE, because there is a MIX between the Ailerons and Rudder to help new pilots with coordinated turns... The primary control surface for YAW is RUDDER, and the primary control surface for ROLL, is Ailerons. This is another item that will come with some experience. It's very hard as a beginner to figure this out, so don't feel bad. You can do it!
      P.S. If you want to see me struggle with this issue, watch my EC1500 Twin Series. I accidentally adjusted in Trim for ailerons and rudder BACKWARD!!! It was a fiasco! This can be done, but only with much effort and stupidity, which I applied liberally, in this situation. I DID figure out the problem and fix it for the last of the three flights, if my memory serves me right.

      @@BrianPhillipsRC Thank you so much for taking the time for such a lengthy and derailed reply. I will do trimming out of SAFE/Beginner mode.

      @@BillKisel also on trimming part.
      Couple of things. I am ssuming ur flying with an rtf remote.
      Rebind the aircraft.
      A) put all ur trim settings on radio to center. Turn it on. Than set all ur trims centered. (u will here a distinct beep when center for each trim)
      B) turn radio off. Plug battery into plane. Set plane on level. U should hear plane servo move. (Than make sure plane wont thrust forward if blade decides to spin up) look into the plane from the front and see if the light starts blinking rapidly. This when this plane is in binding mode.
      C)on radio: make sure ur throttle stick all the way back (no throttle) press the left stick in (i believe this how u do on this rtf remote). Hold it as u turm on the radio. U will hear a long continuous beep. Watch led on plane turn from the rapid blink to another state. When that happens. The aircraft is bound.
      D) radio: let left stick go. Radio will start to beep on and off. When it stops. Radio is bound. Move ur right stick in all directions to see if servo on plane react.. move left stick left and right to see if rudder works. Than move ur throttle up a little and down to see if motor spins up. Throttle down
      E) plane: disconnect battery. Than turn off ur radio.
      F) bining is complete.
      Once rebound.
      Check that all controll surfaces are level by doing this:
      A) radio: turn it on. Have throttle stick all way back.
      B) plane: wait 5 seconds, plug in battery. Put plane on level ground and let it do its thing. When servo move and stop moving. Its done its calibration.
      C) radio: put radio in advance mode (none SAFE mode).
      D) pick up the plane. And check the control surfaces. The ailerons should be even with top of wing. The elevator should be centered between top and bottom surfaces. The rudder should be centered between left and right surface. Try using trims on radio to adjust to correct the issue. If you dont know which way - move stick to direction (its in direction of ur stick). If any of those are off by al lot, adjust it manually (refer to manual, better explanation) after manual adjustment check to see if servo works (you didnt accidentally bend the arm). By moving it via stick movements (full stick movements).
      E) plane: unplug battery. Radio turn off. Repeat A) thru D). Check control surface again.
      Last check Center of Gravity. By lifting plane and balancing underneath the wings (i believe it on sparse, the black rods in wing.) The plane should be level and not leaning forward or backward. Move battery forward or backward as necessary to balance it.
      I hope this helps.

      I went through 7X motors when I was learning to fly. They're cheap brushed motors, and that's about my only issue with this plane. Brushless motors will last so much longer, so I eventually upgraded my Sport Cub S UMX into a "Spabu", which was a SAFE Equipped, brushless motor made from my then late Habu UMX (which was equipped with SAFE)...this was awesome for me. I can't recommend you do this, however...I'd suggest instead, when you get tired of replacing parts, you could go for a SAFE equipped Turbo Timber UMX. The only issue is that it's more expensive but it's a WAY better plane, and more capable too!!!
      It's actually CHEAPER than the RTF Sport Cub S2 UMX, but the Timber UMX is a BNF Basic plane...so now you'll need batteries, charger, and the really painful and AWESOME one - a REAL transmitter ;) :) :)
      Turbo Timber UMX bit.ly/3fxTDQd

      amzn.to/2lV70zo (If you pick THIS style, get the Parallel Cable for UMX Lipos amzn.to/2E9hXVn )

      DX6 bit.ly/30e85X9
      DX6e bit.ly/2Ou7kDM

      Use it. if you don't want to use the lipo, or can't, many chargers have discharge modes. I don't personally worry about it on a 1S pack, since they're not known for their longevity.
      It's one of the packs I just don't care about. They only seem to last a couple years no matter what you do....but this is just my personal opinion.
