    Ah, one of my cherished memories from the 1970s is having lunch in the restaurant car on the 'Thames-Clyde Express' behind 40086 as we climbed to Ais Gill.
    Priceless!

      I have very fond memories of them with their inimitable noise on the west coast main line south of Rugby in the very early 60s. Distinctly remember one Sunday morning when the 25kv was off, seeing one EE4 hauling two AL6s with twenty coaches south!

    Fantastic, especially the last run past!I just cannot believe that it's 24 years ago. I tried desperately to get a ride behind D200 on the S&C but it was always a 47, although I did manage top and tail 31's when we slipped to a halt a mile out of Settle.

    Classic footage of Class 40 Whistlers ❤️ Beautiful sounding throaty Clag ❤️ looks like early 1980s Could say 1983/84 time when people were able to look out the Windows to the Door window remember those days ,Nowadays this wouldn't be able to happen.Back when proper trains operated in the 1970s to the 1980s .Before Privatisation and Network Rail took over and left the railways in a mess they are now .

    Yes it is, the engine in the 50's is the
    16CSVT (more horsepower, more complicated electrical equipment etc, same as DP2) whereas in the the 40's a 16SVT model.

    If you compare 40 013's ascent of Ais Gill with 40 057's elsewhere on my footage you will see the difference in performance. I have never seen a 40 crest the summit as fast as Andania, although she was on a very light load!

    BR were offered the last 50 40's with charge cooling and a 2500 bhp rating - but they refused - there is a definite family pedigree with that RK engine - the last variant was the 56 .
    Some 40's were rated at 2200 bhp - the engine is actually detuned - it's more about what the generator can take - Gateshead's 071 was knocking out more drawbar horsepower and was on solid Newcastle - Liverpools vice Gateshead Wagon ( 46 ) before it's boiler went
    The Portugal 1800 is a variant and the sound was

    Just looks so wholesome:-)) We need to remember the line might look boring nowadays but at least the regular processions of coal trains from Ayr or Ardrossan justify this route's existence. Just wonder when it will be electrified?

    • @Supersonic8984
      @Supersonic8984 8 лет назад

      Isochest unlikely to get wired for a relatively low level of traffic.

    • @Isochest
      @Isochest 6 лет назад

      The traffic level is not the problem. It's the problem of a Politician like Chris Grayling for instance scuppering the electrification project. Numerous Labour Puppets have stood in the way too. Gen up on Monopolism the only politic there is.

    @4SRKT I'm sad that I'm too young to have experienced those days. Its all worked by boring DMUs now.

  • @Isochest
    @Isochest 11 лет назад +2

    I got lineside permits off BR those days it was piss easy and was cheap by modern Rip Yer Orf standards. Showed one to the British Transport Police once at Toton & they were so pissed off they couldn't nick me (they "caught me" in the cab of a class 20).

    They had bags of power but to work on them ! It was easier to take the engine out like you could not swing a cat in there let alone spanners ?.

    judging by your lineside footage, i only hope you work on the railway, if not you are liable to prosecution, up to a £1,000, did you have permission, and if so from whom?
