Lots of memories of this station from this time. I was always jealous of the trains pulled by the 37s as I was on the Waverley service to Falkirk High or the DMUs (class 101?) to Grahamston. If lucky the DMU driver would have the blinds open and you could see out the front. A fine way to enjoy a can of Lilt; a bag of Frazzles and a Bounty bar from the newsagents just outside. I remember the service as 13:08 but might be wrong. A control panel for the station from around this time is on display at Bo'ness Railway Preservation. Thanks for the nostalgia again. Dear Allan There seems to be very little info on this portal. I know the tunnel is 999 yds long and is double track all the way. When I worked trains into this station many years ago (1979-1981) I did ask this question to a very senior Glasgow (Eastfield) Driver, who gave me the simple answer Yes....apart from that , that was all I got . There was a large tunnel collapse back in the 1800's, that may have something to do with it. More research is needed I think as this does seem to be elusive in the railway history archive...many thanks for the intriguing question....Best regards...Mark.
@@thomasshepard6030 Hi Thomas...No I was at Perth as a secondman until 1981. We used to work into Eastfield with loco's from Qst and V.V . Met many of the Eastfield chaps and we always had a good old laugh with our stories and tales. Probably the best times of my career, I moved back South after 81.......My best regards to you....Mark
@@thomasshepard6030 I was a secondman at Eastfield from about the end of 1977 till the end of 1981. I don't remember many names but I do remember wee Bobby Allison. He used to give a lift in from Cumbernauld when he could. I also remember Jim Carrigan and another Jim C. Can't remember the second Jim's surname. I remember one driver who whistled non stop...made me want to throw myself off the train. Another driver once brought a mouth organ and played it all the way to Dundee.
Taken from the hidden glasgow forum "The bricked up tunnel had two tracks running into it and where used by freight trains at the goods station at Queen Street that closed on 6th January 1964. At that time there were 9 platforms at the station but when it was modernised in 1965 it was reduced to 7 even although Buchanan Street station was due to close the following year in November and it's services transfered to Queen Street. The blocked off tunnel ran only a hundred yards or so. It's reason was that Queen street was to cramped and as a result freight trains were limited to 14 wagons and the tunnel tracks where used for shunting backwards and forwards. The goods yard is now the station car park and taxi stance. I hope that answers your question."
Your potted history of the Mk2F DBSOs is inaccurate - they never worked with Class 27s. The Class 27s (classified 27/1 and 27/2) worked "top-and-tail" with rakes of Mk2As from about 1974 until 1979, when the Class 47/7s took over. With the higher power of Class 47s, the "top-and-tailing" of Class 27s was no longer necessary to maintain the timings between Glasgow Queen Street and Edinburgh Waverley: therefore, the Mk2F DBSOs were converted from Mk2F BSOs to work "push-pull" with the Class 47s.
Many thanks for the correction Kevin....Now you mention that my memory comes back and you are quite right.. I do remember the top'n'tailing for those services. My best regards to you...Mark
It is situated at the entrance to a tunnel with a steep uphill gradient so years back loco's worked hard to depart and were banked, so the place did suffer from a lot of soot and diesel fumes. I am sure it is brighter today....best regards...Mark

Can someone fill me in on the tunnel portal to the right of the main running tunnel?
Absolute gem, Tardis for hire anyone please...
Or even the old rickety time machine in the film of the same name......I maybe tempted to go further back though......best wishes Mark
My best regards to you...Mark

spompeytransportvideo no probs it was great work and I enjoyed it very much
Why does this place feel so dirty? It's kind of dark, I don't know
It is situated at the entrance to a tunnel with a steep uphill gradient so years back loco's worked hard to depart and were banked, so the place did suffer from a lot of soot and diesel fumes. I am sure it is brighter today....best regards...Mark
@@spompey Thank you very much for solving my doubt, thanks - Gustavo from Brazil
