  • How to install Windows on M.2 NVME drive? // Hello friends, in this video I'm going to share with you a few tips and tricks on how to get Windows installed on your brand new NVME SSD drive. Before you can do it, you need to follow a few easy steps and it will work with no problem.
The first step, make sure to unplug all other SATA or IDE drives such as HDD, SSD, or Optical drives. This first step might help right away. If it didn't work, go to step 2.
In the second step, turn CSM (Compatibility Support Module) mode off in BIOS in Advanced Settings in Boot Section. This will allow BIOS to work with new memory even if the correct drivers are missing. This usually happens when trying to install the newest NVMe drive on an older motherboard supporting M.2 NMVe.
The third step, change the SecureBoot option to Other OS in BIOS in Advanced Settings in Boot Section.
Hope this video will help you solve those issues with a brand new M.2 SSD not showing up during the Windows installation process or even in BIOS.

      Hey it's Keith
You asked me if I get it going let you know.
No have not got it going yet.
Let me tell you what I tried.
I tried to do a clone of my original SSD 2 my
      M.2
      I gave up on that.
It got a little too complicated so I canceled it.
So as of now if I could just get Windows on the m.2
      I would be happy..
But I have to give it a break for a while because it's burning me out. No Shit. LOL
I HAVE NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE SO IT IS ALL NEW TO ME.
So perhaps later this evening I will try to get just the Windows operating system on my new m.2
      This stuff blows me away.
      I will keep you posted.

This advice helped unblock me, specifically disconnecting all drives, including CD ROMs.
I was trying to use new M.2 SSDs connected via PCIe adapter into x4 lanes as my main drive. The problem was that the Windows USB was saying the drives were unbootable and it wouldn't let me install on them. I tried scouring my UEFI settings to no avail, even the knes you mentioned.
Long story short, by disconnecting all drives, I was able to start the installation process on my M.2 drive. When it came time to reboot, my M.2 wasn't being detected as bootable. I read elsewhere about Clover and installed that on a different bootable USB.
When restating my PC, I booted into Clover, selected the Windows EFI option, and then the install proceeded and finished!

Another important thing to check: Make sure the M2 slot you are using is supported by your CPU. I couldn't figure out why the M2_1 slot wasn't reading my drive and nothing seemed to work. Finally when googling about my motherboard, I found that the M2_1 slot is only supported by 11th gen CPUs (my CPU was a 10th gen). I switched to another slot and the drive was detected without any issue.

Hi Jerry, thanks for your question. I haven't had that error before on my rig. Hello Nathan, have you tried disconnecting the other storage drives before installing Windows on your new NVMe SSD?
It's probably not initialized as a primary partition yet. If you have already installed Windows on a different drive, you can log in and initialize your new NVMe SSD via such programs as Acronis Disk Director, Norton Partition Magic etc. Or if you disconnect the other storage devices on your computer and start the Windows installation process, it will be forced to recognize your NVMe drive as a primary and then you can use Windows Installer included tools to initialize, format and create partitions.
I hope this will help you! Let me know how it goes!

Hi Eric Yu, in your case on the MSI motherboard it's a bit different. According to your motherboard's manual download.msi.com/archive/mnu_exe/mb/E7C02v1.5.pdf on p. 48-49 where it says Windows OS Configuration, you need to set Windows 10 WHQL Support to "Disable" to allow support for other operating systems. Remember to switch it back on to "Enable" after Windows installation is complete.

Hi, if the M.2 drive is recognized but not listed as a boot option, you may need to repair or reinstall the Windows Boot Loader.
Use a Windows installation USB/DVD to boot into the Windows Recovery Environment.
Select "Troubleshoot" > "Advanced options" > "Command Prompt."
      Run the following commands:
      bootrec /scanos
      bootrec /rebuildbcd
      bootrec /fixmbr
      bootrec /fixboot
Also try disabling Secure Boot and enabling Compatibility Mode if your system is not recognizing the M.2 drive.
      Hope it will help!

@@PulsarTECH Windows 10 is a haunted house, with the ghost of Microshaft changing your settings as they please and even "if your next update *might* be incompatible with some of your software, it will just remove it and install the update"

I wanted to upgrade the SSD with an EXACT copy of my original Win 10 Pro SSD with ALL of its applications and data so I bought a 480 GB M.2 PCIe (2 keys) that fits in the same slot/key as the old SSD.
I have a SABRENT USB device that was/is used with AOMEI Backupper (and previously Partition Assistant 9.6 to Clone my 128GB SSD C: drive to the SABRENT 480GB SSD F: drive.
I’ve Cloned using the System Clone and Disk Clone methods. In both cases, the 128GB M.2 Sata and 480GB M.2 PCIe SSD’s are set to UEFI (GPT) mode (NOT Legacy MBR mode).
    - Both cloning methods had my new M.2 480GB PCIe SSD written with the same 110GB of data but would NOT boot from the SABRENT USB device AND would NOT boot in the internal M.2 Sata slot.
What am I doing wrong? I can’t boot externally from the USB SABRENT with new 480GB PCIe SSD. And I can’t boot of the new SSD in the internal M.2 connector. I believe the AOMEI Backerupper cloning is not creating a Boot Sector on the new larger SSD drive.

@@bountygondar if you have an M.2 SATA drive, according to the manual for your motherboard download.gigabyte.com/FileList/Manual/mb_manual_b460-aorus-pro-ac_1001_200716_e.pdf you need to install into slot M2P_SB as it supports SATA, see page 8. Please check that.
Also if you have any other drives connected such as HDDs, SSDs or DVDs make sure they are not plugged into SATA3 0 connector as it will interfere with M.2 slot as well, see page 18.

If it's not Asus then it will look different, every motherboard manufacture has its own unique BIOS interface and a set of settings you can change. Just look for the similar looking words.

Hi, i have a motherboard of b250f with an adata sx8200 pro 256gb ssd. I went through the process in the video and installed Windows on the ssd, the weird part is once i boot up the windows, it will cut off the power within 10 minutes(sometimes 1 min), when i plug in my hdd(old drive), the power cut off even faster. I have an GTX1060 and a 650w power supply, any possible problem can fix?

Hi kar poh, it sounds like you have an issue with your power supply. Your power supply is meant to provide power to all of the PC components as well as protecting them from an electrical surge.
Have you done any tweaking in the BIOS previously such as an overclocking?
