    Great tutorials. Have one of the TP01 Series Desktops and the removal and replacement videos were spot on and well presented. These are good value PCs and somewhat upgradable. I’ve added a stick of 8GB memory, removed and replaced the Wi-Fi 5 / Bluetooth 4 (it only had one of the tiny connectors attached but there was another unused wire hidden that enabled using the existing antenna!) NVMe with an Intel Wi-Fi 6/Bluetooth 5 Card and now I plan on installing a low profile PNY 1030 video card. Your videos are the clearest and most professional I’ve found. Thanks. Very helpful. Had the number 15 Tork bit which made things easy.

    exactly what i was looking for.
    this is the easiest way of doing it.
    i was thinking of cloning, but going from a larger sized HDD to a smaller capacity SSD via cloning may pose unexpected challenges. this recovery disk method looks to be the simplest, easiest and safest way of doing it.
    btw, with this method, the recovered new SSD would have practically all current windows keys associated with the machine, current drivers at installation, settings (as much as possible), etc?
    thanks again for this good work.

    • @accessrandom
      @accessrandom  3 года назад

      You're welcome, and thank you 🙏. Yes, the Windows product key is typically embedded in the BIOS so the recovery will pick that up automatically. Basically, it should give you a factory-restored image, including drivers and original settings.

    • @jeriellucas3543
      @jeriellucas3543 3 года назад +1

      I see.
      To clarify, this factory reset point would be at the version that was originally placed by the manufacturer, or would this restore point include updates? Like I am now at the latest Windows update version, would it revert to an earlier build of Windows 10 from the original machine?
      I would still be ok with it either way. Just want to set my expectations when I try to do this.
      Thanks again and appreciate your response.
      Cheers!

    • @accessrandom
      @accessrandom  3 года назад +1

      @@jeriellucas3543 That's a good question. I believe the original image would be static, but I'm not sure if it is updated in any way during a Windows update - I'll need to defer to others who may have had more experience. Anyone?

    • @jeriellucas3543
      @jeriellucas3543 3 года назад

      @@accessrandom Thanks again. I am now asking my wife if she wants to go through the upgrade. I will also ask if she wants to do it this way, or thru cloning as we also have MS Office, and I don’t know where the product key is anymore. In that case, I’ll just ask them to move their files like pictures out of the drive prior to cloning to make sure it will fit the SSD.
      We have an all-in-one, and it is painfully slow due to a 2TB HDD, but per documentation, it can fit an M2 SSD. Not sure if it will be worth it given the AMD A8 in that PC. We will be weighing if it will make sense to upgrade or it won’t matter despite the upgrade cost.

    • @accessrandom
      @accessrandom  3 года назад +1

      @@jeriellucas3543 Sure. The product key for Office can actually be retrieved using a utility called Produkey (I demonstrate it in one of my other videos to get the Windows product key, but it will work for Office as well), if that helps: ruclips.net/video/nl4okILnko4/видео.html. If the HDD is partitioned such that one contains the OS while the other has programs, then you can just clone the OS partition (but I would recommend including the other smaller partitions). However, if everything is in one partition, the partition is considered as one indivisible object, so your OS (e.g., in C:\Windows) would be cloned with your programs (in C:\Program Files).

After you install it, it should show up in the BIOS and in Windows' Disk Management (even if it is an uninitialized drive). There could be a problem anywhere along the chain - are you able to try a different SATA data and/or power cable (in the case of a SATA interface), or try the SSD in another system in order to rule out a bad drive?

    Hello, a very interesting video. As you can see in the disk manager, there is no HP recovery partition or HP boot-recovery partition.
    You comment that windows already has all the HP "Bloatware" installed and also the drivers.
    The Recovery Drive tool is from Microsoft. Doesn't HP include a tool for you? The one that only allows you to create the recovery media once.
    I have seen that for computers after 2016 you can download "HP Cloud Recovery Tool" to download the recovery media, which usually has to be purchased for € 50 and they will send it to you.
    No longer come with OEM D2D partition? It would be logical (and ethical), taking into account the options included in Windows 10, including "reset this computer", create image, create recovery drive (with the system).
    A friend has a 2016 HP PC and I cannot buy the recovery media for his model and also not from the cloud. Luckily you can still download the drivers (which are never updated), 2 years and they are forgotten, they wash their hands. A PC with only two SATA ports and one of them for the DVD ... It has an HDD .. and many people have problems with Samsung and Crucial brand SSDs, the PC does not come out of the POST ...
    The problem that I see with the recovery drive is that it performs the Sysprep (generalize), and forces you to configure the user accounts, not to mention the inevitable questions at the start of each user.
    When you do a Sysprep of an image.wim it is from the administrator account, which is deactivated, Windows starts and you install drivers and "Bloatware through a tube", when you finish it turns off and that's it, you can clone the virtual disk or create one image.wim.
    Considering all the time it takes to create the recovery drive and then switch to the SSD or NVME, I don't know if it's worth it.
    Install windows and download the drivers (maybe more current), install the microsoft updates, and finally a couple of tweaks with CMD (sfc / scannow, dism), and free up space.
    What do you think?

      Yes, the product key is actually embedded in the BIOS on newer laptops (Windows 8.1 and Windows 10), so the installation of Windows will automatically pick up the product key. For peace of mind, you can always retrieve the product key using the methods in one of my other videos: ruclips.net/video/nl4okILnko4/видео.html

      It sounds like there may be a hardware problem with the NVMe. If it all possible, are you able to try it in another machine to see if it works there? On your HP, you can always return to the original HDD since that is still intact (plus you have the recovery drive which has the factory image on it in case you need to restore it to a different NVMe).

    • @accessrandom
      @accessrandom  2 года назад

      That's a good question. To be honest, I'm not sure since having two boot partitions in the same system can lead to the BIOS registering the wrong one (i.e., it may latch onto the boot partition on one drive, but use the Windows installation on the other). If you're using the HDD solely as a backup, what you could do is physically remove it but keep it in cold storage for future use.

      If you are cloning your C drive and you have (for example) all your Steam games on the D: drive, you can clone just the C: drive. But after the clone, keep in mind that each drive or partition may be assigned a different letter, so you old D: drive may become E:. If that's the case, you'll need to re-assign the letter of your Steam game drive back to D: after the clone.

    Hello! Just have a quick question.
    Upgrading my build. Going from Intel I7 7700k -> Ryzen 7 5800x.
    I currently use a SATA SSD and a HDD (system imaged from my SSD just in case).
    I am installing a brand new, never used M.2 SSD for the upgrade, and I plan on installing a fresh OS on it.
    My question is this:
    Can I (after boot up and all drivers are updated, etc and everything is solid) simply plug in my old SSD & HDD WITHOUT deleting the said info on those drives??? (Keep in mind that I would shutdown the computer, plug those in, load up bios, make sure boot priority is still going to my M.2, then load to desktop).
    If I keep my boot priority on the M.2, my old SSD OS shouldn’t interfere with it correct?
    Thank you!

    • @accessrandom
      @accessrandom  2 года назад +1

      Since there will be two boot partitions that exist in the system (one on the M.2 SSD and the old SSD), I find that the BIOS/UEFI sometimes registers the wrong boot configuration data. You may want to delete just the boot partition on the old SSD to be safe.

    Will anything in this process erase data on a separate drive that is already installed in my laptop? Basically, I have a 2tb SATA ssd that has almost all of my data. My Boot drive is an m.2 nvme that I am going to replace with a new one. When I do the recovery, how do I make sure that the sata is not erased, but the NEW m.2 is working with windows properly? What should I click on the screen at 6:55? I should mention that I have a few programs on the old m.2 that I would like to keep.

    • @accessrandom
      @accessrandom  2 года назад

      To be extra safe, what you could do is physically remove the 2TB SSD from the system while you restore the M.2 - then reconnect it after you're finished. In this way, it is guaranteed that your data will remain untouched. I've heard of others being able to restore while keeping your programs (and I believe they said there is an option to do that), but I hadn't really tried it myself.

      I have another video here: ruclips.net/video/sfS143DikPE/видео.html that shows you how to wipe partitions off of a drive. If at all possible, attach the hard drive to another, separate computer and wipe it there - then remove it and re-attach it to the computer that has the clone/restore. You should then be able to initialize it as GPT, create new partitions, and use it as secondary storage.

      If everything is in one partition, the partition is considered as one indivisible object, so your OS (e.g., in C:\Windows) would be cloned with your programs (in C:\Program Files). All your programs would work as before, as long as everything fits on the destination drive.
