It is canon. In Bionicle Legends 8: Downfall, we learn that Nuju could indeed speak, but only did so on special occasions or in emergencies. His constant clicking language served as a reminder to the other Turaga about their faults and arrogance as former Toa; he could speak, he just didn’t want to
Ah glad you liked it too! I thought - Matoro changes their entire biology to be on land, (it’s also canon that Jaller’s mask became fully red and Hewkii’s fully black) so I thought - why wouldn’t he change their entire colour scheme back into how he remembers them during that process?
Why is everything about this so perfect? The subtle musical callbacks, the animation clearly drawing inspiration from the various online flash animations in too many ways to list here, the emotional gut punches - not ashamed to admit that flag scene made me legit cry at 41 years old, imagining what Nuju was thinking right then and how it parallels what the entire community was thinking when news broke about TheShadowedOne1 - the voice acting so closely mimicking the official voices. It's all just a chef's kiss love letter to one of the most shocking moments of the entire Bionicle story. As memorials to real life people go, you can't get better than this.
So glad you think so, thank you man. It was a year of work fuelled by a nostalgic love of Bionicle and the wish to honour TSO1, and the way it’s resonated with people has made it well worth it.
The Strength of a Toa isn’t by fancy masks or powerful weapons….the True Strength of a Toa is by the actions they make and choose this is why Matoro is the Greatest Toa of them all hopefully his actions will be seen by future generations of Matoran and Toa alike in the original timeline
“It’s ok. For Mata-Nui to live, Matoro must. Yes, Matoro must. But not his friends. Not my friends. All must be right.” I just love that quote. This short film is a blessing to us and a honoring tribute to TheShadowedOne1. Rest his soul.
I ain't gonna lie, got a little choked up and teary eyed, wasn't expecting that to happen. This is so well made, The Bionicle community really is the best.
Dude, that was one of the first shots I pictured in the film however many years ago it was I first imagined making this. That little Matoro flag is just such an iconic Bionicle visual (and really emotional in the context).
I always wondered why we never got that exchange, even in the novels. Seemed quite the oversight, and it's so exciting to be able to bring that moment (that would have inevitably happened) to life.
This is beautiful, but you forgot Matoro's most important line in all of this: "Nuju always said the universe was a riddle. And today, _I_ am the answer."
Yeah I was going for a super natural and realistic interpretation (also wanted to keep it as understandable for casual Bonk fans as possible), so there was quite a bit of cutting and rewording for the sake of flow. That was a line I kept toying with keeping in but eventually had to be cut 🥲
Love how Jaller sees his team as their old Matoran selves. The Matoran script at 4:00, which says Destiny, has the Y symbol backwards. Kinda neat how the Toa Mahri look different once back home, like how Jaller lost the orange on his mask and Hahli's wings now just being shoulder decorations. Kalmah's name was spelt Kalmar in the credits.
Glad you enjoyed it! And thanks for the details you noticed. You are right about Kalmar (my mistake - always going to be something!) and about the Y, but I’m surprised about that as it was just a Bionicle font I downloaded rather than something I made myself. Good eye!
The little detail. Of nuju speaking. This is amazing. This is beautiful. The little details. Hali telling kopeke like in the book, Jaller and takanuva. It’s amazing.

@@msw41 You're very welcome. It was public knowledge among his fans that his greatest passion project was to create a fan film of the novel Time Trap. If you have any interest in doing such a fan film, I'd love to throw my hand into it.
This video is just one of the many reasons why I love the passion and the care the Bionicle community has. To many, including myself, Bionicle wasn't just a toyline. It as much our story as it is Lego's. It shows to this day they once put in so much effort, Time, sweat and tears to make it one of a kind, and it can never be de-throned. Matoro's Sacrifice is a lesson, not just of duty, the service to save his people, his universe-But also a lesson of kindness and selflessness, The willingness to keep pushing no matter the odds stacked against him. Those 2 lessons Resonate with those who keep this story, This Chronicle, alive. Thank you so much for the hard work. And rest in peace to TheShadowedOne1, he was one of the best. And the world is bleaker with him gone.
5:40 It's such a neat attention to detail, that when Matoro temporarily disassociates from the Ignika when remembering his friends, his eyes return to his color, and his body position shifts out of the Ignika's symbol. And then, the next moment, the Ignika pulls him back into that position, and symbols and his eyes shine again. It could have just as easily taken place in his mind (i.e. no physical movement or change in colors, just inner monologue), but you went the extra mile to portray that very moment of individuality that Matoro reclaimed.
6:19 is when I started feeling my eyes geting wet, but the second the Matoran Lullaby hit... there was no way I could hold the tears back Bionicle was much more than a toyline or lore. It had soul. That's why the community is unlike any other. Thank you for this.
I'm still so lost on the timeline of everything in this universe, but god dang this was an amazing fan-made film!! Holy cow! I've always heard that some deep shit went down in the sea, but never knew exactly what, this very much explains it, what a goat!
Oh my god, I am feeling so many emotions right now, it has been over a decade but this piece of work literally brought me to tears, animation, voiceacting and story, all complimented each other to be the perfect tribute (took me a second watch to recognize the "I'll take it from here" line in reference to the OG Mahri trailer, just *chef's kiss*)
Absolutely! It just IS Le-Metru, down to the shapes of the roof and everything. But thankfully it’s not too famous so most people won’t recognise it watching this
It was great finally being able to see moment translated beautifully to some kind of motion picture. The death of Matoro has personally remained one of the most memorable deaths of any hero in any media. Typically when the death of a hero occurs, it marks the end of their journey. They sacrifice themselves in grand last stands against enemies outnumbering them, or having that final confrontation against their hated rival, being remembered by many for their bravery, strength and courage. They start the series a hero and end a legend... Matoro's story, however, was different. He only ever saw himself as a translator for his village's leader. He never saw himself as much of a hero, a great warrior like the Toa Nuva or even above his fellow Toa Inika. He was just a Matoran trying to do his duty, not only to the great spirit but to his friends. When the Mask of Life reveals to him what his duty is, though weighed by such a task (as anyone would be) he doesn't hesitate to put the mask on. In his dying moments, his only wish is to see his friends returned home to be praised for the heroes that they are. Matoro wasn't a big, bombastic warrior. He wasn't looking for attention or praise, he was just trying to do the right thing. Not only by his home but by his friends. In doing so, in my opinion, he probably became that universe's greatest hero. He started as a villager, and ended a legend.
This was bloody amazing, i wasnt ready for the feels seeing Matoro's death like this, it just makes me love the Bionicle community even more, this community is just awesome
The part where the Toa Mahri were shown in their Matoran form was beautiful. It's as if Jaller is thanking them for being his friends for so long but also feels some regret bringing them to their deaths. This is amazing, the scene that deserved to be adapted into the movie, which we never got from Lego. But this does more than just delivers.
I loved the world of Bionicle, Matoro loved it too. But above all, Matoro respected his duty, let us repay him by doing our duty. Let us remember him by fulfilling our destiny.
So nicely made. Love the interpretations of the characters! Seeing Jaller see the others as they were as matoran felt sweet because it's how he knew them, but then when he saw himself as one was so deep since it meant he no longer saw himself as a strong hero, but rather small and helpless.
You did a great job at building into the chaos in the fight between the Mahri and Barraki making everything so desperate and busy just to juxtapose it to the stillness and tranquility Matoro's sacrifice created
This is so beautiful. Thank you for honoring our lost brother. Goodbye theshadowedone1. You were part of our journey and wont be forgotten, just like Matoro.
I gotta post one more comment because i keep watching this and trying to absorb and process all the lovely elements without sobbing. But Hahli and Kopeke, and Nuju next to the flagpole get me each time. Gods this is so well done, please, please do more in the future.
God damn it, you just brought back memories I forgot and now I'm so sad. Matoro's story was one I always loved and his sacrifice made me cry as a child. Now I'm a grown man and sitting in my home crying again over the same story. Thank you for this wonderful animation, I will definingly be watching more.
This screams passion and love. The music the models the cinematography.. I'm right here crying man.. so glad i grew up with bionicle and even more glad that there are amazing people like you keeping the myth alive.
That was amazing. The imagery, sound design, music and writing. It's beautiful. Matoro's death was a noble sacrifice that hit pretty hard but this short film hits harder. The script was done so well that even if someone who has never heard of Bionicle comes across this video gets to understand the depth of Matoro's sacrifice. This is a perfect example of what modern day movies should try to achieve
this was soooooo beautifully done! had a few tears coming out of my eyes especially wen Matoro said his final good bye to Jaller, the scene were Matoro was a Matoran before his final moment and the flag at the ending, that was how we all remembered Matoro from MNOG. This was a well done film, the soundtrack, story and everything else that made this epic. we even seen unseen stories such as the Makuta's getting blinded by the energy beam to what Matoro sees when he wore the Mask of Life, the original Toa Team lead by Jovan who first used the Ignika, the rise of Toa Ignika and the final battle of Karda Nui. a great tribute also to TheShadowedOne1 but also to Matoro himself.
One of the best Bionicle fan films I've come across. Beyond that, one of the best fan film adaptations I've seen of any franchise. Truly, a love letter to the time before time.

5:40
It's such a neat attention to detail, that when Matoro temporarily disassociates from the Ignika when remembering his friends, his eyes return to his color, and his body position shifts out of the Ignika's symbol.
We should all aspire to be like Matoro. Stay strong, fellow Toa.
Damn, how come im just finding this ? It was possibly the best stop-motion fan film i have ever seen, i cried so hard, amazing work !
6:19 is when I started feeling my eyes geting wet, but the second the Matoran Lullaby hit... there was no way I could hold the tears back
Bionicle was much more than a toyline or lore. It had soul. That's why the community is unlike any other. Thank you for this.
I'm not crying...YOU ARE! 😭 Right in the childhood!
I'm still so lost on the timeline of everything in this universe, but god dang this was an amazing fan-made film!! Holy cow!
I've always heard that some deep shit went down in the sea, but never knew exactly what, this very much explains it, what a goat!
If you ever want a lore dump Ben Saints 13 hour long video is probably the best experience
A very beautiful animation, Bionicle will live forever in our hearts.
I did not expect to see Singapore's cloud forest in this! There is so much love for the series and we are here for it to be more!
My jaw dropped. I am so inspired by Bionicle’s community. That’s something mesmerising!
I’m grateful to be a Bionicle fan in this day and age!
It gets better every time I watch it.
why am i crying in the club right now?
this is the best bionicle animation so far
Everyone's crying? Good. We all have souls, then.
HOLY BALLS THIS IS THE BEST FAN FILM I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY ENTIRE LIFE
So nicely made. Love the interpretations of the characters! Seeing Jaller see the others as they were as matoran felt sweet because it's how he knew them, but then when he saw himself as one was so deep since it meant he no longer saw himself as a strong hero, but rather small and helpless.
I love that you picked that meaning up! Thank you for the kind words
@@msw41 it was too deep not to. Thank you for the great video. Hoping for more!
You did a great job at building into the chaos in the fight between the Mahri and Barraki making everything so desperate and busy just to juxtapose it to the stillness and tranquility Matoro's sacrifice created
The kinds of deaths these characters were willing and did take is insane.
This..was…FANTASTIC! I love how this came out, it’s been a while since I’ve seen a good story driven animation!
I'm honestly really glad you've enjoyed it so much.
This could’ve been our fifth movie!😭🤍❄️
Matoro THE GOAT.
…
That rocking remix of Nathan Furst's legendary theme legit made me cry. I love everything about this.
Long live BIONICLE, long live the legend.
wow. just. wow.
that's a fantastic adaptation.
ART and CINEMA
That was amazing. The imagery, sound design, music and writing. It's beautiful. Matoro's death was a noble sacrifice that hit pretty hard but this short film hits harder. The script was done so well that even if someone who has never heard of Bionicle comes across this video gets to understand the depth of Matoro's sacrifice. This is a perfect example of what modern day movies should try to achieve
That's beautiful praise, thank you
this was soooooo beautifully done! had a few tears coming out of my eyes especially wen Matoro said his final good bye to Jaller, the scene were Matoro was a Matoran before his final moment and the flag at the ending, that was how we all remembered Matoro from MNOG.
As someone who is more of a fan of the Toa Nuva and the Toa Mangai. Matoro is still my number one favourite Toa of Ice
In unity, we stand together.
In duty, we keep the peace.
In destiny, we fufill our purpose.
This is a gorgeous retelling of the comic. I recognize almost every frame recreated here from when I read it as a kid.
Oh my god, this is great!! The last shot with Nuju and Kopeke standing at the flag... 😭
This was so emotionally powerful I cried, thank you bionicle, thank you my fellow bionicle fans who still keep this amazing community alive after so many years
Thank you for making the greatest Bionicle fan film of all time.
Absolutely beautiful. I even took my hat off for Matoro.
Incredible. Echoing memories of a comic I read dozens of times and adding so much more detail. "I'll take it from here" is a great callback too.
This is the greatest thing I've ever seen. I found myself consistently blown away by how much I was enjoying it.
This was so beautiful. This brings back so much memories. I used to be on the BZ Power forums back in the day and my username was toamatoro lol I’ll never forget the friends I made during that wonderful time, and I’m sure some of, if not most of them have already seen this. Thank you !
This is it. This is how that comic made us feel in 2007. This is beyond amazing. Thank you.
This would deserve some kind of price or something... It almost brought me to tears. Thank you all for doing this possible, it is a beautiful gift to all the Bionicle community.
That was beautiful.
Unity, Duty, Destiny.
Incredible work - well done, and what a way to honor the passing of a friend. May TheShadowOne rest in peace.
