One other thing, Herb Sargent was the only established writer when SNL started, having written for the original 1954 Tonight Show. He took a pay cut against the wishes of the WGA to do the show. Crazy thing was he was 52 when he started, wrote Update (with others) from 1975 - 1980 and 1983 to 1994. He was 72, that's why he didn't get Spade and Norm.
@@BlindMikeProject There's still so much from those guys that I haven't heard yet. I enjoy them on the radio the most probably but any stand up they did was fantastic.
@@BlindMikeProject The weirdest is after Dick Ebersol fired Brad Hall in December 1983 and until Christopher Guest took over in December 1984, SNL had the host do Update so the following hosted Weekend Update - Don Rickles, Robin Williams, NBC "real" news anchor Edwin Newman, Billy Crystal (as Fernando), 1972 Dem Pres nominee George McGovern, Bob Uecker, Michael Douglas, Rev. Jesse Jackson, George Carlin, and Ed Asner
This episode reminds me: I used to genuinely like SNL and collect the “best of” DVDs.. a decade ago it just got so watered down and it’s like the show itself became the focus, not the talent of the comedians who feature in it.
Yes. With Michael Che as a headwriter, they hopefully would not have been too stiffled. Bobby Kelly & Dane Cook could have been good, too. Since they started as an improv group
Jean Doumanian took over for Lorne in 1980 and was so hated and maligned that they fired her and put the show on hiatus near the end of Season 6, had to scramble and then Dick Ebersol stepped in
Maybe it would be better to cold open into the podcast and then play the theme song after "zip it up and zip it out" then you wont have to censor it for the podcast
Daniel "bobo" Kurlan and Big Andrew would be a dare I say *PHENOMENAL* weekend update duo
Never been a SNL guy, But i love Norm and i have seen alot of his Weekend Update videos and laughed so i almost cried.

Dennis, Colin, and Norm are hands down my favorite guys from the show. Those guys were great.
I think if you like stand up more than SNL itself, those are your guys

Most people forget Christopher Guest did it too in 84-85
Forgot to mention him and Brad Hall. Shame on me!
@BlindMikeProject I'm not entirely sure even they wanna be remembered for that

Few stand-up comics have ever found a comedy vehicle that fits them as perfectly as Norm did the Weekend Update.
Sports Show with Norm MacDonald, which had a similar format, was also great
That SNL (Lorne) chose Pete Davidson over Dan Soder I will never forgive.
Soder & Gillis could've been a great era of SNL

Maybe it’s the SNL nerd in me but I feel like this should’ve been a 2 part episode
Eventually, we'll do a full Norm on Weekend Update episode
FATHER guido sarducci was better than bill murry.

The David and Bobo Weekend Update
So Bobo, how was your weekend Bobo?

Ever listen to any Emo Phillips?...the delivery is annoying bu5 that guy is a great joke writer
Yes. The little I've seen is up there with Steven Wright
