- In this episode we cobble together a hybrid clutch to suit the gearbox conversion
Throughout the project we will build tools to help us along the way, the custom tools we build, we will upload our how-to videos

“What’s the worst that can happen?” Love the motto mate😂
Hi Dave, love your work. I am like you, I have to attempt everything myself. We have a family motto - It can't be that hard. Anyway, I am putting a Zetec 2.0 into a 1952 Fordson E83W pick-up ( I originally mounted a 1600GT x-flow (with a pre-xflow head) but wanted to modernise the engine (injectors, modern crank etc) but realised I might as well start with a Zetec). The Zetec is going to be a tight fit as the engine bay is tiny. I have strapped, boxed, and reinforced the chassis, put a Mitsi L300 front end in (narrowed 100mm) and a Ford Falcon ute diff (which I cut 150mm off one side to work with the offset engine) utilising the single transverse spring but adding anti-roll bar, panhard rod and modern shocks. I originally modified a Transit MT75 box to take a 2000E bell-housing but now with the Zetec I am looking to change to a MX5 or RX8 6-speed auto instead. Thanks for your videos :)
That sounds like my type of challenge 😊😊, All the best with your project 👏
@@DavesGarageuk Thanks for that. I am looking forward to the next installment of the Mk1 build. Cheers, Neil
Well figured out good patient work there
Well done Dave, coming along nicely!👍👌
Thinking outside the square.👍
1.8 mx5 clutch discs are 215mm
great work dave
Loving the vice drill mate, that's my style 😄 interesting info, great vid again, keep up the good work 👍
🤣😊
Mx5 mk3 nc 5 speed can be used with an adapter plate.
Another great informative video Dave thanks for sharing your learnings mate
Very welcome
Great work Dave. For a slimmer starter motor try a LRS707 starter but one for a 2.3 DOHC Mk3 Granada Auto starter as its smaller.
That's brilliant David, I'll check that out.
Great video has always dave
Glad you enjoyed it
Love how you get around the problems Dave,be interested to see how you shorten the lever position.
Thanks Alan
Morning Dave the gas man from Belfast. I’m working over here this week so a Escort video is just the job too pass my day away lol 😆 I can’t give you any advice on what you’re doing I just love what you’re doing as it very interesting 👍🏻 4K subs is just brilliant and well deserved 🤩
Thank Stevie 😊
If you search eBay for stm168, this is a ford small starter that should fit well. I have one on my zetec kit car. If you need any dimensions let me know. LR 707 is the Lucas part number, but the stm168 is smaller and more powerful.
I've looked at that, it brings up a starter for a merc?
Some genius craftsmanship for cutting that clutch down Dave I love working stuff out myself to ., glad your getting it sorted .
I actually got offed a mk3 escort ghia with a genuine 50k on it last night that’s been in my maté’s aunt’s garage for 30 years it’s dead tidy to so I might have a new project fingers crossed 🤞👍
Nice, not many unmolested Mk3 Escorts left.
great work once more , a popular mod on the ford cvh engine is to fit a transit connect started as its a lot small than the big old ones and stronger but I'm unsure if there any skinnier , good luck
Cheers Jon, I'll check that out, I have got an ST170 starter on the way, I know these are slimmer, but the bolt pattern is different, so I'll have to bodge that 😀
Another top vid with brainstorming of parts hybrid adapting 👍. Can you use a focus starter motor on that adapter plate, they are better than the pinto starter chunk !? 😎
I think the Zetec starters are a different bolt pattern, but I'll look into it
Interesting stuff, ive been watching your videos as im looking at putting a zetec in my mk1 cortina.
Is your lathe a drummond round bed?
Thanks, I've no idea what it is, old...
Did you have to make a pilot/spigot bearing for the back of the crank? As the Ford being FWD won't have one?
The ST170 have a spigot bearing in them from factory, if its a normal Zetec then one has to be fitted.
Dave back in the day I think it was 1982 ford had the 5 speed gearbox just came out it was hard to get a hold of but better than 1.3 that was on my pinto why the mx5
Why the MX5? Mostly because I had a spare gearbox hanging around, as you do. But also, I can move the gearstick to suit the Escort, the RX8 and even the Type 9 Ford box, pushes the gearstick backwards.
Mk2 NB starters are narrower
Were there any issues with the gearbox input shaft length or spigot size? Cheers, Stu
Hi Stu, the input shaft just creeps into the spigot bearing about 5mm, I'll see how this pans out, if needed I'll make a spigot extension and cut back the input shaft to suit it. Watch this space.
@@DavesGarageuk Another quick question Dave, do you know what the ratios are like on the Mk1 Mx box? I know a lot of people who use the RX 6 speed box use it as a 5 speed because first is too low.
It's the same box I've got in my MX5, don't know off hand what the actual ratios are, but it's a great box, I haven't noticed a particularly tall 1st gear, but a lot depends on what diff ratio you've got too.
Why on earth would you want to use mazda box if not fitting a mazda duratec engine? It’s not that good box.
Early MX5 box is far better than a type9, and cheaper. Have you not driven an early MX5?
@@DavesGarageuk If going through the trouble of changing bellhousing pattern I would go with a bmw box. Much beefier than the fragile mazda one.
And running a ford engine type 9 is easy if not running big power. Type 9 is a good box when serviced and tolerances are good. Smooth shifting and handle moderate power.
Edit, oh and the type 9 is not expensive the T5 is. But still getrag 260 is a very good alternative and can handle anything you can put in a mk1 bay.
