Dario is spot on. "Days like this, is it worth it? Absolutely not"
this made me cry 😓😓😓😓😴
Now look at His career ending crash...
jake plays same😢😢😢😢
I read something that Dan Wheldon and Dario Franchitti were childhood friends....
NoviRanger83 alot of times, especially in series like Indy and Formula 1 the guys grow up racing against each other in the kids cart series events and stuff. NASCAR is a little different in the mix because the money attracts drivers from different varieties, like Jeff Gordon that dominated on dirt. Probably true with their age as close as it is.
Dan wasn't just a great driver and champion, he was a wonderful man.
He was a wonderful man. I got to talk to him for like 5 minutes twice.
I took the loss very hard gone way to soon Dan was a great guy always happy and smiling
I HAD THE CHANCE TO TALK TO HIM BUT I REFUSED AND WOULD RATHER PLAY TIC TAC FRICKING TOE
Well-known among the Motorsports world
For all their rivalry you can see Danica was absolutely broken by it RIP Dan Wheldon
No bro, those were alligator tears. She is actually heartless. Ask her own pit crew members. Everyone in the day room with me who watched her post-race interview that day agreed to her phony boo-hooing. Sickening! 😂😂🇺🇸🎸
@@m.scottreeder Not a big fan of her and have never liked her. Her antics are unbecoming of a pro driver. But there's a huge chance the emotions she's displaying in this video are legit. You don't fake your voice breaking like that
@@zeinmets3550 You’re right. Being at the race track scene and witnessing this explosive crash would be overwhelming. It probably did have an emotional impact, but on the day it happened, we were either watching ESPN (replay) or the actual race. Danica’s post-race interview just seemed plastic. I always thought she was nice-looking, she reminds me of a Native American girl I knew back in the ‘90s. But I’ve read articles about her attitude, and harsh criticisms of those around her. Even in the world of sports, like Hollywood and the music industry, obtaining celebrity status will bring out the worst in folks.
@@m.scottreeder sounds like she rejected your advances bro.
@@Fireglo Sounds like you need a life or something. Man, where do clowns like you pop up from? The toilet?

I don’t even watch IndyCar, but this made me tear up. Truly heartbreaking
I’m with you.
It was truly heartbreaking. I cried. I value all lives. At Least he died doing what he loved. My condolences to his family.
I vividly remember watching Dan Wheldon's crash on live TV with my dad. I was about 13 at the time, and I'm turning 19 in June. Hard to believe it'll be 6 years this year he's been gone. R.I.P Dan Wheldon!
Kenny Dresden same but 19 this past May. I remember seeing Wheldon's car flip into the catch fence and I remember the cameramen never panning to his car afterwards. Something never felt right about that race and that track, maybe it is aftermath bias, but something never felt right that day.
Same i saw it live and i was crying like a baby I didn't know Dan personally but it felt like losing a family member
Dan would have been 45 this year.
Dan Wheldon: RIP. Indycar will forever remember you. This video made me extremely emotional, especially Danica's interview...
+Zottffss Fun Even female racers like Danica can cry.
Everyone can.
@@zottffss Well said.
It’s harder to see the men cry than women honestly.
I was crying when I saw Danica's reaction 😭 R.I.P Dan... You'll be missed
R.I.P. Dan, we miss you.
Mark McDonald I agree
I agree to guys it's so sad to see him die
union pacific fan 2000 I actually saw a video of the crash. It was a nasty accident
R.I.P Dan Wheldon
1978 - 2011 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Mark McDonald Dan Wheldon was a great person, I always loved his Jim beam/Klein Tools paint scheme when I was a kid! You will be remembered from day and night! God bless you Dan!
In some paddock somewhere, Dan, Greg Moore and Justin Wilson are standing around, giving each other crap over who was better. The conversation goes silent as they hear "Settle down, kids", as Dale Sr and Senna walk by and smile.
zlinedavid woah
That's something to smile at
Greg Moore's idol was senna i read it somewhere and his dad ric was biggest influence in his racing career
Jules is just sitting at the top of the Eiffel Tower.
Its sad what happens but don't put senna in the same argument with cars doing left circles please...
“You know people always ask me why I sign off ‘until we meet again’ and it’s because ‘good-bye’ is oh so final......... Good bye Dan Wheldon.......”
This statement still gets me to this day.
I remember the Indy 500 when he won in 2011 and the night after the crash my mom told me that Dan died I held back tears when his car crashed. Dan will be missed.
So sad. Him, Jules Bianchi, Justin Wilson, we lost too many cool guys way too soon. RIP boys.
Can we add Maria de Villota? Her eventual death was perhaps related to her crash.
Bert Lee and Hubert
and Antoine Hubert sorry about the spelling
Y'know how the saying goes though, lads.
They never truly died.
They all are one lap ahead of us all.
Can't believe it's been 10 years since this incident. We miss u Dan ❤❤
R.I.P Dan .. I don't usually watch Indycer, I'm F1 fan , but moment like these totally break my heart 💔
Dario was never the same after this. In addition to various difficulties with the 10, he couldn’t shake Dan’s ghost. Retiring was the best thing for him.
I’d say it was more so the new car that led to his struggles. Even then he did win the next years Indy 500.
He only retired because of the really bad Houston crash that forced him to.
The tribute given Dan at Indy was so fitting. And it wasn't the white sunglasses, it was the fact that the new cars he helped test and develop protected all 33 drivers through 500 miles of racing and that the added safety didn't do anything to diminish the intensity of the event.
Dan was what Indy was all about, and just about the best ambassador the sport could ask for. You'll be remembered and revered forever though, you're immortal now, like every Indy 500 champ there ever was or ever will be.
There are some terribly sad days in racing especially to lose someone so young and likable
Too sad to watch. I was watching live that day. Horrific crash and it was miraculous that there were not more deaths. RIP Dan Weldon.
The win at Indianapolis was the greatest final memory for those of us who were/are Dan Wheldon fans. Im crying like a little kid watching this, just like I did when I heard the news. He was a racing hero, a legend, and one of the greatest men the sport has ever seen. RIP Mr. Wheldon. We all miss you terribly.
Danica cried for real...She and Dan Wheldon were friends. Everybody knows that...
R.I.P. Dan Wheldon, we miss you... and you will never be forgotten.
Danica's reaction has to be the saddest reaction in history.
RIP Dan Wheldon 1978-2011
Nicole briscoe the following week at talladega is beyond heart breaking
i miss Dan i was watching the race when he got killed hurt so much to hear that he did not survive Dan was a great driver i miss him everyday wish he was still here with us i loved his attitude about racing always happy and smiling a wonderful young man gone too soon
R.I.P all winners from racing aryton senna, jules bianchi and more from indycar an other racing. THANK YOU
You could hear how Danica was trying to keep herself together. So sad! 😥😥😥
RIP Dan you always have been and always will be my hero. Getting to be there when he won the 500 was the best day of my life also getting to talk to him about the 500 a couple months later (2 weeks before the crash) was 5 minutes I will cherish forever. I got to do an Indycar 2 seater at Las Vegas and going through a certain spot in the middle of 1 and 2 I got a feeling i can’t explain it was odd. It was a feeling I will never forget.
Danny was my friend. So many days spent laughing together in the pitlane at Brands Hatch. We were so proud of him, one of us, winning Indy. We were heartbroken when he was taken away. I’ve stood at his grave in Florida and asked God how we ever came to that place. I’ll always remember that cheeky grin, and as I type this I hear your voice in my mind. We still miss you Danny. Rest easy.
I remembering watching the crash on Tv . It was bad. First Dale Earnhardt ,and now Dan wheldon. It is just a reminder how driving these cars at high speeds is so dangerous. RIP Dan Wheldon.
i found that out when I was watching the nhra arizona nationals that year when Larry Dixon said "hug your love ones and send their condolences to the Wheldon family" (while winning the final round of top fuel). I was crushed, and crying at the same time. RIP Dan 🙏
So tragic. Such a young guy with such a wonderful life and family.
I stopped watching IndyCar for a few years after his death. No other death of anyone "celebrity/sports person" has hit me like that. Just watching this, all these years later tears me up. It was so sad. 😥
I was motivated by dario's speech about how they push each other to win and succeed.
This race shouldn't have happened! I lost my favorite driver in IndyCar! I cry everytime i think about Dan. D= The only favorite drivers that i have left in racing are Danica and Carl Edwards.
I miss you Dan!
@moeshUK Any man who drives a racecar for a living is very, very brave. It doesn't matter if it's IndyCar, NASCAR, F1, ChampCar, Rally Car, Drifting, Drag Racing, etc. If you are operating a vehicle at heart-pounding speeds, when you know that stuff like this can happen to ANYONE, even yourself, you're already one of the bravest the world has to offer. Car racing may not be the hardest sport in the world, (not saying it's easy, 'cause it's not) but it's definitley one of the most dangerous.
I was at the 500 this year, and I couldn't agree with you more. He was a great driver and human being. Someone who set a good example for all of us.
R.I.P. Dan Wheldon & Justin Wilson
😢
As the '12 season begins, we the Indy Car family of Drivers, Mechanics, Logistic Personel, Press Relations, Admin Workers and Fans remember Dan. The Indy Car family is a small family but a tight family. Many of us know one another in some way and have a great stories to tell about our family. Indy Car fans are special that many get to personaly know drivers and team members. The stories of this family seem incredible to me now when I look at this loss. Dan will be missed but remembered.
Dario's words still haunt me. He'd just won the title, he's one of the toughest racers I've seen in over 30. years of watchalong F1, Indy car, sportscars. He'd just won the title and said you know what, it doesn't matter
I literally cried when this happened, he was my all time favorite.
9 years on we still remember him
I was crying as much as these racers 3 years later...I still remember him
Poor Danica 😭😭😢
+EE HK She was friends with him. Every racer in that doomed championship race were all friends of Dan.
+EE HK She really cried.
Pitboss Gamer aggree with you r.i.p Dan wheldon 1978-2011
Yeah, poor Danica, losing her life that young
WTF are you talking about? Danica is not dead.
Such a shock. I watched the 2011 500 at the track a great day to race. Little did I know that a few months later would he die in a race. Very sad very tragic.
He will never be forgotten
This is absolutely sad :/ He was a good racer......and just as you said man....they are some brave men racing and doing the things they do...putting their lives in danger doing the things they love. R.I.P Dan
I agree. The last two races in Formula 1 (Gran Prix of Europe and Gran Prix of Britain) have been some of the best races I have ever seen. The use of the DRS and KERS do get rid of some of the true overtaking skill required to pass but also create incredible races such as these that have countless passes throughout the race.
Such a tragedy! Rip Dan!
racing is dangerous whether its F1,NASCAR or Indy, you have to respect those who have died racing like Dan Wheldon,Dale Earnhardt, Ayrton Senna etc. They know there is a chance they will die on the track but they still race. The only good thing is that we know they died doing what they love the most:Racing. R.I.P all racers who have died racing, never to be forgotton
Sure miss him. His kids are his legacy. RIP Danny
Well said Dario.
I cried then, I'm crying now. We miss you Dan
Im only a nacar fan and i never watched a indy car race at all but i kno the sadness for the drivers and the fans it reminds me of the dale sr wreck wen i watched it my heart goes out to the Wheldon family and his fans RIP DAN WHELDON
Seeing Danica Cry is So Sad!
@@asunjiracingleaguez Blah blah blah
The month before, we in the air-racing community lost pilot Jimmy Leeward to a similar horrific accident at Reno. Rest In Peace Dan Wheldon and Jimmy Leeward , #77 and #177.
Awww Danica I know it hurts losing a friend
I was choked up with emotions after the crash. I didn't cry until they interviewed Danica Patrick. The reason was because that was her last Indy Car race and to lose a friend on your last race is the worst thing ever! This is gonna be hard seeing the IZOD Season start up again.
goodbye dan. i always looked up to you. hope you are enjoying heaven. ill see you when its my time. i just hope everyone will remember you. goodbye, old friend
Poor danica patrick 😭😭😭😭
it breaks my heart seeing Danica cry 😢
Danica in Piston cup is Johnny Blamer.
@@asunjiracingleaguez who cares?
I don't watch IRL and I never knew who Dan Wheldon was nor watched him race. He died doing something he truly loved and I have much respect for anyone willing to commit such valor as that.
I will never forget as long as I live, seeing the headlines on ESPN reading: "Dan Wheldon Dies", on that Sunday of October 16th. R.I.P
What really surprises me is that October 16th is my older brother's birthday- his name is Dan, too.
There are reasons why IndyCar racing is the most dangerous motorsport racing in all of sports and this is the answer why RIP Dan Wheldon
2 months later I still can't believe it, godspeed Dan Wheldon.
"Is it worth it? Absolutely not." Rest in Peace, you will be remembered forever.
This is so emotional. :(
1) There is much skill required in this form of racing. If there was no skill in this racing then why doesn't everyone do it? They earn great pay for supposibly having no skill 2) You can be going 50 mph or 300 mph, the risk will always be high in racing 3)That's a new low for a F1 fan. I'm used to F1 fans saying there the best cause they don't run ovals. But come on, a great guy, driver, person just died. That was the wrong time to say that. You should be ashamed and embarrassed.
Today is just an awful day in motorsports no matter what form of racing you follow, what your favorite make is, or who you root for. R.I.P Dan you will be missed. :',(
“These are very talented racers” said Dan Wheldon. RIP buddy :(
This video brings back sad memories of the podium ceremony an the end of the San Marino Grand Prix in 1994 after Ayrton Senna died and you could visibly see the iceman himself Michael Schumacher trying so hard not to cry after losing one of his dearest friends.
Hearing guys (and a girl) driving at 200+mph and walking away from crashes cry is so sad
this reminds me so much of paul dana in 06 :( R.I.P. Dan
Whomever said small ovals…it’s not that. There are many other factors. The banking was incompatible with Indycar and the drivers are flat out on this track. This kind of track lends itself to cars going four-wide and this was a packed field on top of that. It was designed for stock car racing. Those cars are slower, heavier, and are not open wheel. They can handle pack racing. Indy cars are way too volatile. They can’t bump and not have something happen. Now Indycar has made a lot of safety changes that would have saved Dan, had they been in place back then. But they weren’t back then. It was one of the worst crashes I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been part of this world for a long time.
There are only a number of people that get to Indycar so every person in indycar would be friends, fan was like a best freind to evrybody
R.I.P Dan Wheldon 1978-2011😥😥😥😥😥😭😭😭😭😭🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🏎🏎🏎🏎🏎
I can’t imagine what it’s like being there and seeing someone die especially when you’re paid to commentate it to a live audience this death was the Indy equivalent to losing Dale
These kind of wrecks are just just horrible😔
this was the first indycar race i saw but i was still crying
This Race was suppose to crown a new champion, this race was suppose to be Danica's Last Indycar race, this race was suppose to end the 2011 season.Instead it took a life of one of the greatest indycar drivers. RIP Dan
So sad!! I only watched it because of Dan! Don't watch it no more! Miss you bro!!
Tribute was emotional

Imagine that crash didn’t happen. Dan would have been 44 this year and would have retired in 2017.
the General public thinks all these drivers are competitive the whole time. But this shows how close they are in the real world.
this race should never happened danny wheldon still be here today if this death race never happened r.i.p. danny ol boy

I watched this race on TV and almost 7 years later I still tear up hearing about Dan Wheldon. The amount of heartache that day from the announcers, drivers, and crew members is something we rarely have to see. I pray that nothing like this happens again but I know that as long as we continue to push our limits it's going to happen more.
Just think if a professional driver can lose their life in an accident with some of the best trained and prepared safety workers what chance do the people out street racing have? Don't take that risk, you don't want your loved ones to go through this kind of heartache.
I remember watching this live. I cried....
r.i.p Dan Weldon
RIP to Dan Wheldon, I can't believe people are disrespecting Danica Patrick, the poor girl was so upset after as you can see. She's a fucking good driver.
Little brother from another mother. I thought it was cool 'cause that shows how much somebody truely cared.
Rip Dan only saw you winning the Indianapolis 500
man that is sad.
@wallguytheman Dan Wheldon's a guy I've always had respect for too. He was a great driver, and to be honest, I think he could drive just about anything that had wheels. I was shocked when I saw this on the news. I didn't even watch the race, and I see this on the news. It's ashame people have to be so immature on here, especially about Danica's comments. I gotta tell ya, there's a LOT of people I'm disappointed with on here. Good to know there's respectful people like you on here though.
Very good job ESPN, this was what the fans wanted to see. Dan wheldon was one heck of a racecar driver but an even better man. A said day for motorsports, but we must move to do better.
