masterpiece ...powerfull .... very high level of Genesis
6/4, 11/16, 8/4, 11/16, 12/8, 11/16,... I hope I'm counting right, lol. WOW! Gotta love the time signatures! Phil's drumming is amazing, as always!
8/4??
@@sharpie6888 When in doubt, verify with Rick Beato. He did an episode on this one.
6/4 is actually crazy, I was trying to figure that out recently 😆
@@sharpie6888 Yes, confirmed. It is 8/4.
@@qriofficial1769 You can also check out Rick Beato's RUclips channel. Episode 57 of "What Makes This Song Great", which covers Dance On A Volcano. Such a great tune and album!
My absolute favourite Genesis album and, frankly, my absolute favourite album ever... I have listened to this soooo many times and it just never gets old.
Great!
I agree! Great album!
oui c'est assurément leur meilleur album !
Totally agree, for me the best Genesis album and one of the best albums ever made IMO. I thought Genesis were never the same after Hackett left, but that's just my opinion.
Me2.
As a lifelong drummer trust me when I say that this song is an absolute BEAST to play on drums! After 40+ years I think I've got it down...well i dunno maybe?✌🎵🥁
OH come on,,I just saw a one handed monkey play this on the drums lol
One of the best records ever! 🎸🎶🌋
No : the best record ! 🙂
My favorite Genesis album. Head phones are a must. Wish others knew how great this album is.
Trust me; we definitely do... 🎸🎧
This and Wind and Wuthering
a live gig is a must
And then check out " Brand X " if you want to hear the full power of Phil Collins as a drummer !!!
In the early '80s, by pure happenstance, I found myself with a cassette of this album in my hands, even though I didn't know the band. Since then, I've bought them all, they're one of my favorite bands, and this album "A trick of the tail" is, in my opinion, Genesis' greatest achievement. And I still own that cassette ! 🙂
One of my favourite albums of all time. They were genius.
Same here. Be glad Mr. Rick Beato got us in to that song
@@MarkothunderI only now got put onto this by him and even though this is literally my first listen I'm already thankful this sounds brilliant
The intro of this song makes me shiver! ♥️🎶🎧
The Intro is 4/4 2/4 and 11/16 ... 4/4, 11/16 then 3 bars of 7/8.
@@mikethemusicman1978 Masterpiece! 👌
Quite right!
My favorite 70s album.
An opener that all Genesis fans hoped for (expected).
That weird combo of sounds starting at 2:15 is like the perfect musical interpretation of bubbling lava. What a brilliant song.
Complexity at its finest.
Never thought of it like that. Good point
Those drums , rumbling bass & Hackett's guitar 🔥
Indeed so. Peter was great, and Phil stepped in perfectly
@@brianjohnson8315peter wasn't on this album
MATERPIECE IS THE WORD for this piece.
Whole album is amazing, still got it on vinyl
Yes the remastered version gives a headache
@@lino8leum Absolutely, it's completely over compressed to the point of having a pumping effect. The original is more dynamics and has shaper attacks. Yes it doesn't have that "modern" punch, but I'm fine with the old mix. I think the 1994 remaster from the original mix is excellent.
@@truefilm6991 Yeah, no need to do remixes for Genesis Dammit !!
They were already perfect.;))))
@@lino8leum Exactly.
I loved the artwork of the album cover, the lettering was beautifully done.
One of the best album openers of all time
I was at Penn State and Genesis came to Rec Hall, and somehow I got in the front row....they were brilliant and got to fist bump Phil during this song
Wow Mikes BASS Pedals in action 👍👍👍
It really helped that Mike upgraded to the Moog Taurus bass pedals over his previous Mister Dewtron bass pedals. The moog pedals just have so much power behind them!
Played drums myself for 45+ years and this still leaves me in awe for how good the drumming is....and dam its good!!
I’m a left handed drummer like Phil, my drum hero. I’ve played for 50 years and am in awe of him. Sad that he can no longer play.
Keep on playing!!
Phil was as good a drummer as there was in rock during that period
This is truly a masterpiece.
This entire album is a masterpiece of creative songwriting,
arrangement and musicianship as well as production...it
will always stand the test of time as being one of the best
of "prog" albums,a great work in every way...unlike
the so called music that is out now...thanks
Just another of Peters' creative, jocular/abstraction of 'modern' societal dysfunctionality. . . ." with that he fired,, ,the other saying, as he died" you'e got it wrong, ,it's 'th' same 'ol' song forever & ever!! "robbery, assault, & battery, ,'th felon & his felony , , FOREVER
Amen! Agreed 100%
I remember when it came out. I was 19 and worried about a let down after the stellar Selling England and Gabriel’s departure. But I peeled off the plastic, put the album on the turntable, donned headphones, and laid back on the bed to begin a sonic trip that has stood the test of decades. A stunning masterpiece.
@@DanBlake3rd - yes ! Stunning masterpiece - good way to describe it!
THE best Genesis Recording! Peace from Detroit MI.
Back in '76 a work colleague at Transport House suggested to me that I would like Genesis, so I found an import record store under Wynyard Railway Station and bought this album along with Selling England By The Pound and have NEVER looked back! Brilliant intro to a brilliant album.
🎶 Dance On A Volcano 🎶 Thanks Genesis For This Excellent, Awesome,
Great & Fantastic Masterpiece, You're The Best!!!!! GENESIS FOREVER!!!!!
🎤🎹🎸🥁🎸🎼 🎤🎹🎸🥁🎸🎼🎤🎹🎸🥁🎸🎼 🎤🎹🎸🥁🎸🎼
Best Genesis album ever!
Aitoa progea !
I still don't think Lamb has been outdone, by anyone, anywhere, ever. But Genesis after Peter Gabriel left did a fantastic job of very Genetic music and imagery. I was surprised and still consider this one of the best albums ever. Lots of great driving music. I woulsn't take a cross country ride without it.
Hear that kick-ass growl of the Moog Taurus pedals on "Dance on a Volcano"!!! What a way to open an album. Absolutely badass.
This song is a such an 800lb gorilla of a track. You can hear the echoes of it in the best modern prog and metal bands. Check out the song The Last Baron by Mastodon from their album Crack The Skye. In fact just go end to end on the album. It's pretty heavy, so maybe not to your taste, but it's probably their best full length, and easily the best progressive metal album of all time.
@@peachmelba1000I actually like Mastodon and heavier music (i.e. thrash metal) so I will definitely go check it out. I mostly listen to their albums “Leviathan” and “Blood Mountain”
a masterpiece....the entire album
As much of a fan as I am of Peter Gabriel-era Genesis, this is still my favorite Genesis album. From start to finish, A Trick of the Tail is a winner.
100% my fav album from any band!!
Incredible album. Entangled and Ripples are some of the greatest songs of the modern day.
Love how chunky the guitar is sounding on this remaster.
Please don't forget Mad Man Moon. Another hidden gem by Tony.
@@TheOpus55 Absolutely.
Love Entangled
One of my favourite Genesis albums. This album marks a promising change for the Genesis timeline
Yeah but it's no calling all stations is it :troll:
Peter's departure was a huge blow to the band but they survived with an amazing new lead singer who came from within the band. Phil was found good at both softer and harder stuffs.
It was over after "Wind and Wuthering." They survived Peter's departure -- as this superb album demonstrates -- but not Steve's. What lay ahead: "Invisible Touch." "We Can't Dance." Garbage.
@@davidbowman4259invisible touch and we can't dance are Genesis 2 best selling albums lol not garbage at all
@timothyking152 just because something sells doesn’t mean it’s good those songs are pop garbage as much as I love genesis most of there 80’s stuff is garbage boring unimaginative shit like most pop music
This band doesn't get the recognition they deserve. Their as good as anything that came out in the 70s
They're INFINITELY BETTER than anything that came out EVER IN HISTORY.
Do their 150 million records sold not count to you?
Better
Even more, this band accomplished a masterful fusion of contemporary musical genres. I do think that, for instance, Claude Debussy would love Genesis.
Faut tout de même dire qu'ils remplissaient des stades dans le monde entier ! Et même après ! À Paris 2008 et bien après. 100 000 personnes !
This revolves as my favorite song by them. An absolutely blazing masterpiece. What a great way to instill confidence in the new era of the time.
This has got to be my favorite Genesis song....brilliant!!
Killer opener for a killer album,, still in my top 3 albums by Genesis
It is as fresh as the first time I heard it all those years ago. All the magic is there and it still sparkles :)
Still my fave Genesis album of all time. Wot a classic.
Btw, this song is hard af... and it hits hard, i know that the guys weren't sure about the ending, and i know, it makes sense why, but at the same time, its nice to see them "showing off" from time to time because that ending is still excellent and needed.
Yup
My favorite Genesis album.
Don't care what anybody says.
AGREED.
Mine too
My favorite Genesis song!
Holy Mother of God
You've got to go faster than that to get to the top
Dirtly old mountain
All covered in smoke, she can turn you to stone
So you better start doing it right
Better start doing it right
You're halfway up and you're halfway down
And the pack on your back is turning you around
Throw it away, you won't need it up there, and remember
You don't look back whatever you do
Better start doing it right
On your left and on your right
Crosses are green and crosses are blue
Your friends didn't make it through
Out of the night and out of the dark
Into the fire and into the fight
Well that's the way the heroes go, ho ho ho
Through a crack in Mother Earth
Blazing hot, the molten rock
Spills out over the land
And the lava's the lover who licks your boots away, hey hey hey
If you don't want to boil as well
B-B-Better start the dance
D-D-Do you want to dance with me?
You better start doing it right
The music's playing, the notes are right
Put your left foot first and move into the light
The edge of this hill is the edge of the world
And if you're going to cross you better start doing it right
Better start doing it right
Better start doing it right
Let the dance begin
This was always so much fun to play when I was pretending to be Tony Banks in a Genesis tribute band back in the day. Sometimes we did the album version "Let the dance begin" and sometimes the Seconds Out version...
Listening to Phil Collins' autobiography, Not Dead Yet, it's interesting to try catching it from his point of view, the Genesis members exploring the process of trying to get another vocalist to succeed Peter - then looking at Phil during the audition process before looking at each other and agreeing that it should be him (against his objections). And, this is the initial fruit of the choice.
Then, throw in how they finished *A Trick of the Tail* with Phil being convinced that the audition process was still in progress.
The first time Genesis toured with Phil as the lead singer, he had a piece of paper with sentences to say to the audience between songs. He wrote that as he held the piece of paper his hand was shaking because he was so nervous.
Боже ,до чего-же хорошо ,обожаю ДЖЕНЕЗИЗ !!!
Я тоже
Он великолепен!
Still an amazing track after all these years. ❤️
Phenomenal creation! It was a pivotal part of forming my musical taste back in the 70's Listening now, the complexity of the lyrics, rhythms and melody is striking . Beautiful!
I was in summer camp when I listened to this music , I was 17, I never got tired of it, but it's hard the years pass quickly and the tears flow listening to it in 2022, it was the good times. Nostalgia 😥(France)
Absolute banger.
Bloody fantastic song and album. Genesis best band ever.
When I think of Genesis, this song starts the trail of memories. Such a stage for musicianship and storytelling. Let the dance begin!
un des meilleurs albums sans nul doute !
avec the The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
An absolute masterpiece - stunning and breathtaking!
Last two with Gabriel and first two with Collins - the very peak of Genesis albums
Unfortunately when Phil Collins was in control they really moved to the commercial side slightly.😊
So geniale Musik 🎶 immer noch zum träumen👍💋🌹
Not a die hard Genesis fan but this album is on top of my best ever albums list.
Just seen Steve Hackett play dance on a volcano on the seconds out tour the band was phenomenal experience the whole set a must see event
The last 2 minutes is like a parody of Progressive Rock . Love it
progressiivinen rokki on itse asiassa parodiaa klassisesta musiikista monilla tavoilla höystettynä ( kuuntele joskus Zappaa tai vastaavia hienoja säveltäjiä - nuottejen väliin saa laittaa mitä vaan ! )
That roll that Phil does at 2:29!! And the simple (but very tasty one) at 3:02! And 3:57!! And the (single?) bass drum work from 4:21!
Back in the day , real LSD and Genesis .Awesome trip...Peace...
I love this Album! I love you Genesis! The Best Band of the world! ❤️🎼🎶
110% I Agree.Until of the end of my days❤️❤️❤️❤️
Yup, they're definitely right up in MY BOOK as well ....
Cet album relève du divin. Une révélation. Je ne m'en suis tjs pas remis. :-)
A peerless album, it's been my favourite since I heard my dad playing the vinyl when I was young. I've listened to it hundreds of times by now.
Thank you for the exelent sound quality.
Great song!!!! I LOVE YOU Genesis ♥️♥️♥️♥️
Good track
The drumming on dance on a volcano is brilliant
Phil es so sophisticated!! The album is in my top five of all time. Agresive, sweet, powerfull, compasive. Incredible, incredible album!!
My best album of Genesis. The music is purely magical.
the drums man, the drums !
Unforgettable !
Thanks so much to Genesis for putting the whole back catalogue up for free steadily over time - this is a band who know that exposure is the best advertising they can get - this channel has opened up older works to new fans and also newer stuff for the older fans that may have not heard much of it - Genesis setting an example a LOT of bands could learn from
Such a powerful opening track of a great album! Phil's successful debut as a lead singer after Peter left.
Brilliant drumming ! 😊
no shit sherlock!
This album came on my birthday! feb. 2! (But not the year of 1976 i was born in 2003!) i heared those songs on my first time, i was surprised of what Genesis was capable to do. My Dad Introduced me to Genesis, and Untill this day, i keep hearing those masterpieces. Los Endos is an absolute perfect closing to the album! And all the songs are perfect too!!
5:33 to 37 is such an overlooked part of this song. Brilliant.
Классный альбом............................................................
Sensational start of the first album without Peter! The fab four at their best!! I love this track and this album!
Even better than the true Fab Four, and that is a lot to say, isn't it?
In my opinion, this is one of Genesis' best albums. Their run without PG was just as good as their run _with_ him.
Holy Mother of God
You’ve got to be faster than that. . .
to get to the top...
@@TheDude81 Dirty old mountain, all covered in smoke
She can turn you to stone, so you better start doing it right!
Genesis is a supergroup that plays contemporary classical music. In the songs, especially in the EARLY PHILL COLLINS period, there is a lot of good instrumental music. This is their best period. Developed songs (especially Tony Banks' keyboards), a lot of great hypnotic music.
A Masterpiece for the Ages. Rock at its BEST.
And people worried that Phil didn't have the chops for the lead vocal...
I think it was on one of the earlier albums that Phil was lead singer.
@@georgemaster689 Yeeah, he sang lead on a couple of soft songs, but this was the first album where he was "the" lead singer.
@@AndE667 If you ever saw any kind of documentary on Genesis,Phil mentions that they auditioned about 400 singers and no one made the cut.
@@georgemaster689 What does that have to do with anything?
Also, in another one Tony says the real number was like five, IIRC...
@@AndE667 Was it that few? I heard a higher number.
@Genesis Oh My Goodness! I FINALLY GET TO HEAR THIS ALBUM!! It’s on my “Wish List!” I’m slowly recollecting my lost collection!
Great use of synth bass here
My favourite Genesis song.
My first concert 8/4/76 Beacon Theatre NYC
Lucky man!! 👍
Finest Genesis record IMO
Saw genesis at Sophia Gardens, first ever concert absolutely brilliant a total eclipse of the heart for Genesis
The most fine music of the xx century.
This album blown my mind 🤯
La mia fu moglie, sosteneva che i Genesis; li teggava così: ingegneri, della musica....aveva ragione 🤍💙
Great Song 🍀🍀🌞🌞💫💫
Hace 50 años que lo escucho... y seguiré haciéndolo hasta el final de mi vida! Disfruto de todos los integrantes, pero especialmente de SH.
Brilliant track, I think they played this at Maple Leaf Gardens in the early mid 80s and was still amazing!
Descobri o Gênesis nos meus 16 anos por essa pérola rara obrigado Gênesis que nos meu atuais 58 sempre me toca de uma forma profunda nos meus sonhos ❤ que nunca mudaram 🎼🎻🎸
This album moves from majestic to enchanting to wall of sound to every other beautiful adjective you want to use and is brilliant from the first groove to the last (yes, I'm old skool)...
Phil Collins :great voice and great drumming
This is my favorite song by Genesis! Great album to !
Pete was out of the band by this time ...but believe me his influence was still omnipresent. The way Phil sounds is very much Gabrielesque....some who are new to the band may think it's Peter...anyway awesome moments by Genesis !!!
On the Genesis Réunion videos Pete even said he's been thanked for this album a few times 😅
Legend has it that they tried out 200 singers when Pete left, and here they'd had his replacement in the band the whole time. The rest is rock history!
Top prog-rock song of a generation
