This was my mom's favorite song. When she was in the hospital, unable to talk or really communicate, I put this song on for her and she squeezed my hand SO TIGHTLY and I watched as tears fell out of the corners of her eyes. This song will forever remind me of my mother, and that moment.
I just realized today that this song is about Solomon's trial, in which two women both claimed to be the mother of the same child. Solomon threatened to cut the child in half and give each woman one half. The women's (or rather, one of the women's) sin was thinking it was all about themselves, rather than seeing themselves as part of a greater whole. The true mother understood this intuitively, and gave up the child so that the child could at least live (Solomon then gave the child to the real mother). But the two women are just a metaphor. The whole world is clamoring for ownership over a planet that fundamentally isn't theirs, thinking it's all about themselves. It's petty and pathetic, and so, to give perspective, Maynard borrows from Solomon and suggests: "cut it all right in two."
The greatest lyric ever composed for sure, not only is it beautifully and uniquely worded, but this lyric works from both a religious and non-religious perspective. A religious person may say how could you ignore the majesty of god and heaven and all its eternity for your short life on earth. Whereas a non-religious person could see this as, why would you waste your gaze to the stars as a search for non existent paradise instead of awing in the wonder of the universe.

Opiate - The scared and confused angry child. Undertow - The child has grown, and is still not happy. Facing and beginning to fight his problems. Ænima - He's still fighting, figuring things out. Still in pain, but he can see the other side now. Lateralus - He isn't quite at peace yet, but he's past the nitty gritty. He's growing and finding himself in the world and the cosmos. Exploring his spirituality. 10,000 Days - He now thinks back, and watching the present day. He, once knowing the pain and struggle the people of earth face understands whats happening. He chastises, tutors and tries to guide people in the right way. Yes, this album is spiritual but, it is very earth focused. (Mostly). In my opinion it's their best album by a mile, and this is my favorite song of theirs PERIOD. I don't know how anyone can call themselves a tool fan and say they don't like this album
Albums are always like that, the best songs hide and grow on you, hold meaning after some real life experiences that suddenly make a song just hit you completely different.
@@SuperRayW its prog. isnt the whole point to be artsy and use stuff that metal bands/artists dont? for example, BTBAM's new song Revolution in limbo. it has a mariachi-esque guitar solo and bridge
I don't believe for one second that these four musical geniuses just happened to find each other. No, they were brought together by a powerful force that is far greater than we can even imagine. And it has proven this by giving us TOOL. THE MOST INCREDIBLE, UNTOUCHABLE BAND OF ALL TIME AND BEYOND
That's the beauty of the universe. Itself is the force that creates the causes and effects for great beauty to happen, the right people to meet, and the correct circumstances for our imaginations to run wild. We CAN imagine it, see it, if we simply open our minds.
Of course putin wants to do the opposite, rather than divide in two he wants it _all_ for himself, spoilt little brat that he is. It's because there are others like him, though, that things get ripped in two.
Color me negative but I enjoy this more than “Imagine”. No dreamy sugarcoating or over-reaching optimism. Just a hard dose of reality to make a person think.
That's exactly what people should hear nowadays. It's obvious at this point that we only stop to think about stuff when we get hit hard. And music is, in my opinion, the best way to send powerful messages out
I think the most intense experience of my life was listening to this song. First time doing acid around 2 hours into the trip I put this song on the tv with the album cover full screen. I accidentally put it on repeat (best decision ever made) and sat listening to it for an hour watching the pattern on the face shift and change, I quite literally felt my body ascend. This song had forever been changed for me, such a masterpiece
Hell yeah same for me all of tool did. it changed me for ever!I was at tool concert .I had some on a sugar cube.Best experience ever I will never forget it.
There aren't too many shortcuts in life that don't double back on yourself. But good psychedelics with great music opens new pathways in the mind. If you have guardians like mine, those pathways provide safety when trauma and Brother Death come looking for your soul.

@@timothywootton5331 I think even before that - the division of territory is another thing that humans have inherited from our animal ancestors, and sadly, it is something that still keeps us divided nowadays - it is the thing that sparks conflicts and wars... Instead of living together we mark our borders and become strangers to one another. I wish in the future our brains evolve even more so that the mankind learn from its past mistakes and everyone can live in peace together, otherwise we will take the path to self destruction I write this comment probably hours/day before RUclips gets blocked in my country. Just letting you all know no one wanted this shit that is happening right now. I wish you all peace and love
West Detroit....and Maynard grew up in MIchigan, for a good part of his life. Skied with his dad. I tell folks, Pink Floyd makes you wonder, TOOL makes you THINK.
“Monkey killing monkey killing monkey over pieces on the ground” This line literally sums up humans in the last 10,000 years and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that’s going on right now. No matter the value the ground has wether religious or resourceful, humans will do anything to hold on to it.
Carl Sagan's pale blue dot also falls in line with this. "The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot."
We humans are nothing more than highly expressive animals. Territorialism flows through our veins and is natural. We faught for food, ressources, protection and territory since the dawn of time. Only when greed got mixed into this, certain humans started to hate on this naturalistic feature. It's not natures or most of humanity's fault that some aren't able to keep for themselves. The palestine-israel conflict has more to it than what you see though. Greed, hatred and beliefs are what drives the expanisionism into oblivion. They don't pick for pieces on the ground, they are picking for the ground itself to survive on whilst being thrown out their homes and lands that they've been living on for hundreds of years. Well, that's just my opinion though and everyone has the right to their own.

@Rex R I have been sober 8 years and the most important thing I can tell you is to get sober for yourself nothing else because let's say for example you want to get sober for your wife or husband if you end up divorcing the first thing you are going to do is go back to using. So do it for yourself and look into rehab centers where you live and look into possible government grants to help pay for your treatment.

Don’t wait another day. You already know what you have to do, already know that it’s been too long. Also, get therapy. You may not realize this, but you have a lot of healing and self forgiveness to do. There’s a part of you that doesn’t get why you’ve been there that long, that part of you isn’t going to trust you for a long while. That part of you thinks it must be worth nothing because if it were worth something you would’ve saved it from all that chaos. That part of you needs answers and fast, but first, safety. You’ll never find peace until you’re in a relationship where you believe the future can be better than the past. Godspeed
I used to always be so upset and feel like I was born in the wrong generation because I never got to see such iconic bands from the 60s and 70s such as Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, Eagles, Joplin, Queen..the list goes on. Then I realized that I'm extremely lucky that I am able to experience APC and Tool in my generation; I wouldn't trade that for the world.

It's definitely my favorite
it's the tracks that are just wind chimes and rain sticks; every Tool album has SOME unforgivably artsy bullshit.

"I just realized today that this song is about Solomon's trial, in which two women both claimed to be the mother of the same child.
It's petty and pathetic, and so, to give perspective, Maynard borrows from Solomon and suggests: "cut it all right in two." " - C. B. Robertson

Right in Two Lyrics:
Angels on the sideline
Puzzled and amused
Why did Father give these humans free will?
Now they're all confused
Don't these talking monkeys know that Eden has enough to go around?
Plenty in this holy garden, silly monkeys
Where there's one you're bound to divide it
Right in two
Angels on the sideline
Baffled and confused
Father blessed them all with reason
And this is what they choose?
(This is what they choose)
Monkey killing monkey killing monkey over pieces of the ground
Silly monkeys, give them thumbs, they forge a blade
And where there's one they're bound to divide it
Right in two
Right in two
Monkey killing monkey killing monkey over pieces of the ground
Silly monkeys, give them thumbs, they make a club and beat their brother down
How they've survived so misguided is a mystery
Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability
To lift an eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here
Cut and divide it all right in two
Cut and divide it all right in two
Cut and divide it all right in two
Cut and divide it all right in two
Fight over the clouds, over wind, over sky and
Fight over life, over blood, over air and light
Over love, over sun, over another
Fight for the time, for the one, for the rise and
Angels on the sideline again
Benched along with patience and reason
Angels on the sideline again
Wondering where this tug of war will end
Cut and divide it all right in two
Cut and divide it all right in two
Cut and divide it all right in two
Right in two

You may not realize this, but you have a lot of healing and self forgiveness to do. There’s a part of you that doesn’t get why you’ve been there that long, that part of you isn’t going to trust you for a long while. That part of you thinks it must be worth nothing because if it were worth something you would’ve saved it from all that chaos. That part of you needs answers and fast, but first, safety.
