    Lyrics:
    All righty then
    Picture this if you will
10 to 2 am, X, yogi DMT, and a box of krispy kreme's in my "need to know" pose just outside of area 51, contemplating the whole chosen people thingy when just then a flaming stealth banana split the sky like one would hope but never really expect to see in a place like this. Cutting right angle donuts on a dime and stopping right at my birkinstocks, and me yelping "holy fuckin' shit!"
Then the X file being, looking like some kinda blue green Jackie chan, with Isabella Rossellini lips, and breath that reeked of vanilla chig champa, did a slow mo matrix decent outta the butt end of the banana vessel, and hovered above my bug eyes, my gaping jaw, and my sweaty L. Ron Hubbard upper lip and all I could think was, "I hope uncle martin here doesn't notice that I pissed my fuckin pants!!"
So light in his way, like an apparition, he'd had me crying out...
    "Fuck me!
    It's gotta be
    The dead head
    Chemistry
The blotter got right on top o' me
Got me seeing E mutha fuckin T!"
And after calming me down with some orange slices and some fetal spooning, E.T. revealed to me his singular purpose. He said. "you are the chosen one. The one who will deliver the message. A message of hope for those who choose to hear it, and a warning for those who do not." Me! The chosen one. They chose me!!!! And I didn't even graduate from fuckin' high school!!
    (You'd better listen)
Then he looked right through me with somniferous almond eyes
Don't even know what that means
Must remember to write it down
    This is so real
Like the time Dave floated away
See, my heart is pounding cuz this shit never happens to me.
    Can't breathe right now.
    It was so real
Like I woke up in Wonderland
    All sorta terrifying
I don't wanna be all alone
    While I tell this story
And can anyone tell me why y'all sound like peanuts parents?
Will I ever be coming down?
    This is so real
    Finally it's my lucky day
See, my heart is racing cuz this shit never happens to me
    Can't breathe right now.
    You believe me don't you?
Please believe what I've just said
See, the dead ain't touring and this wasn't all in my head
See they took me by the hand
    And invited me right in
    Then they showed me something
I don't even know where to begin
    Strapped down to my bed
    Feet cold and eyes red
    I'm out of my head
Am I alive? Am I dead?
    Can't remember what they said
    God damn, shit the bed
Overwhelmed as one would be placed in my position
Such a heavy burden now to be the one
Born to bear and bring to all the details of our ending
To write it down for all the world to see
    But I forgot my pen
    Shit the bed again
    Typical
    Strapped down to my bed
    Feet cold and eyes red
    I'm out of my head
Am I alive? Am I dead.
    Sunkist and Sudafed
    Gyroscopes and infrared
    Won't help. I'm brain dead
    Can't remember what they said
    God damn, shit the bed
Can't remember what they said to me
Can't remember what they said to make me out to be a hero
    Can't remember what they said
    Bob help me
    Can't remember what they said
We don't know and we won't know
    God damn shit the bed

A tragicomic portrait of a character who takes themselves too seriously and yet is a total joke, expressed in a joke song which is presented with all the grandeur and musicianship that prog metal is capable of. A portrayal of the dangers of trying to find truth in the psychedelic experience without the critical thinking and introspection that is always required to find any kind of truth. Truly a message of hope for those who choose to hear it, and warning for those who do not. A fuckin' masterpiece.

I can show you the science that backs this actually. It's out there, it's just not accepted by the mainstream authorities yet. Everything Maynard sings about is real. This song is about a real experience, at least theoretically, that is then medicalized as evidenced by him being in the hospital.

The passage from 8:38 to 9:16 is for me the best moment in a tool song and surely one of the best in rock music in general.
This is the apogee, the final climax where the message is revealed but the narrator "forgets his pen". I'm feeling like the entire song is preparing the listener to this special moment since the beginning, especially the instrumental part just before with the groovy bass part and the destroyed guitar solo which create a very serious atmosphere, the suspens is at its peak. Tool's musicians create deeper and deeper atmospheres and moods that fit with the narrator's story, the tension finally peaks with the last instrumental part. By that point, the listener is totally focused on what Maynard is gonna say, the Rosetta Stone and the fate of humanity will finally be soon revealed.
What follows after that is one of the most mind-blowing thing I've ever heard, sadenly the narrator forgot his pen when the message was delivered by UFOs...
    "Shit the bed again... typical."
    Well said, Maynard.
Just excuse my English guys but I just wanted to point out the musical genusiness and the song writings skills of these guys.
The first time I listened to that, I just cried at that moment because it made (and still makes) me feel something I can't really explain, a special feeling related to the pure beauty and the greatness of our humanity filled with a feeling of pure hopeness for it and our future.
I love Tool so much since so many years, their discography is flawless and legendary, 10000 days is for me a rock masterpiece that will never be matched in its kind.

    Tool - Rossetta Stoned LYRICS
Alrighty, then ... picture this if you will.
10 to 2 AM, X, Yogi DMT, and a box of Krispy Kremes,
in my "need to know" pose, just outside of Area 51
Contemplating the whole "chosen people" thingy
when a flaming stealth banana split the sky
like one would hope but never really expect
to see in a place like this.
Cutting right angle donuts on a dime
and stopping right at my Birkenstocks,
    and me yelping...
    Holy fucking shit!
    Then the X-Files being,
Looking like some kind of blue-green Jackie Chan
with Isabella Rossellini lips, and breath that reeked of
    vanilla Chig Champa
    Did a slow-mo Matrix descent
Outta the butt end of the banana vessel
And hovered above my bug-eyes, my gaping jaw,
and my sweaty L. Ron Hubbard upper lip,
and all I could think was:
"I hope Uncle Martin here doesn't notice
that I pissed my fuckin' pants."
    So light in his way,
    Like an apparition, that
    He had me crying out,
    "Fuck me
    It's gotta be
    the Deadhead Chemistry
The blotter got right on top of me
    Got me seein' E-motherfuckin'-T!"
    And after calming me down
    with some orange slices
    and some fetal spooning,
E.T. revealed to me his singular purpose.
He said, "You are the Chosen One,
the One who will deliver the message.
A message of hope for those who choose to hear it
and a warning for those who do not."
    Me. The Chosen One?
    They chose me!!!
And I didn't even graduate from fuckin' high school.
    You'd better...
    You'd better...
    You'd better...
    You'd better listen.
Then he looked right through me
    With somniferous almond eyes
Don't even know what that means
Must remember to write it down
    This is so real
Like the time Dave floated away
    See, my heart is pounding
'Cause this shit never happens to me
    I can't breathe right now!
    It was so real,
Like I woke up in Wonderland.
    All sorta terrifying
I don't wanna be all alone
    While I tell this story.
And can anyone tell me why
    Y'all sound like Peanuts parents?
Will I ever be coming down?
    This is so real
    Finally, it's my lucky day
    See, my heart is racing
'Cause this shit never happens to me
    I can't breathe right now!
    You believe me, don't you?
Please believe what I've just said!
    See the Dead ain't touring
And this wasn't all in my head.
See, they took me by the hand
    And invited me right in.
    Then they showed me something
I don't even know where to begin.
    Strapped down to my bed
    Feet cold and eyes red
    I'm out of my head
Am I alive? Am I dead?
    Can't remember what they said
    God damn, shit the bed.
    Hey ...
Overwhelmed as one would be, placed in my position.
Such a heavy burden now to be the One
Born to bear and bring to all the details of our ending,
To write it down for all the world to see.
    But I forgot my pen
    Shit the bed again ...
    Typical.
    Strapped down to my bed
    Feet cold and eyes red
    I'm out of my head
Am I alive? Am I dead?
    Sunkist and Sudafed
    Gyroscopes and infrared
    Won't help, I'm brain dead
    Can't remember what they said
    God damn, shit the bed
I can't remember what they said to me
Can't remember what they said to make me out to be a hero
    Can't remember what they said
    Bob help me!
    Can't remember what they said

My first and probably my favourite tool song. I was 14 when I got shown this by one of my classmates and I remember being sorta uncertain about it but decided to download it anyway. The song sat on my phone for weeks before it ended up coming up on my shuffle playlist one time when I'd gone out for a walk. All I remember was sparking up a spliff as the lost keys/blame hoffman part was playing and sitting down not long after in order to better soak up the complexity of the song's progression. After getting back home, I spent the evening downloading every single tool song I could find. However, despite loving the band and their songs I have never been able to recapture the magic of just sitting down on a grassy bank and hearing rosetta stoned play for the first time, something which I would give anything to experience again.

I remember when I first listened to Rosetta Stoned I was in computers class in school working on a project . I was just getting into Tool and had already listened to a fair few songs like Schism, Lateralus and The Pot. I was just going to put on some basic hip hop songs as background music and then I saw Rosetta Stoned in my recommendations. I saw the name and that it was eleven minutes long and I thought, "Oh ya this is gonna be good" . When I heard Maynard say, "Alright then, picture this if you will" followed by Adam Jone's powerful heavy guitar and Maynard 's accompanying Lyrics I literally moved back in my chair about 3 feet. I didn't do it intentionally it's as if the music forcefully pushed me back. It caught me off guard I just wasn't expecting it. The whole song was a masterpiece from beginning to end and listening to it for the 1st time was one of the best musical experiences of my life I'll never forget it.
Safe to say I abandoned my project that day and when I got home I listened to Rosetta Stoned and a load of other Tool songs on repeat.

Is just so good it's unbelievable, it's almost entirely out of place musically with how melodic it is, and yet not only do they fit it in, they then seamlessly revert back to the previous more gritty style, despite the extreme contrast of these styles it fits together so cohesively.
Then there's the lyrics. It captures so very well that state of being really high where every irrelevant thought is like an epiphany. It once occurred to me on drugs that I could solve world hunger using the moon, in that moment I was so sure that I had solved it. I HAD to tell someone about this so I approached a friend to tell him (literally 30 seconds later), and I had forgotten entirely what I wanted to tell him so urgently so instead, winging it, I told him about my plan to get a full time job as a clock. Though I think the lyrics are inspired by a more hallucinogenic experience than mine.

So now it's "fuck me, it's gotta be", "my heart is racing, because this shit never happens to me" and "my heart is pounding, because this shit never happens to me"!

How darkly funny that aliens might come with a message of hope and a dire warning to the people of this planet and happen to pick this one particular guy as their herald, not knowing that nobody would believe him because he's a junkie and strap him down to a hospital bed while their doom approaches.

Is there a single song by this amazing band that cannot be chosen as a favorite? The truth is that each song represents a unique cosmos of sound. Each song is a universe, both musically and lyrically. This, in turn, means that the entire discography of TOOL is nothing less than a multiverse, full of power, energy and passion. There is always something new to discover, even when you think you've heard it all. It is like an endless journey of discovery.
TOOL's music transcends the ordinary boundaries of musical genres, creating an immersive experience that captivates and engages the listener on multiple levels. Each track is meticulously crafted, with layers of complexity that reveal themselves upon repeated listens. This complexity makes their music not just a collection of songs but a profound auditory exploration.
From the intricate rhythms and time signatures to the deeply philosophical and introspective lyrics, every aspect of TOOL’s music invites introspection and reflection. The band’s ability to blend technical prowess with emotional depth creates a powerful and transformative experience.
In a world where the superficial often overshadows the profound, TOOL stands as a beacon of artistic integrity and depth. Their music encourages listeners to look inward, to confront their inner thoughts and feelings, and to emerge with a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them. This is why, in the realm of music, TOOL's work is not merely entertainment; it is an essential journey into the depths of human experience.
As a psychologist, I even have to say that their music should be used in therapy - it is this very quality that makes their entire discography a therapeutic TOOL (!), capable of providing solace and insight. (19/6/2024)
