I'm an old man now, and grew up on the who, but this, still to this day is such a beautiful tune
I'm an old guy too, 65, but when I am upset, this is the song that I turn to.
This song rocks me to my soul!
Take a nappy pappy, and put a sock in it.
I'm 21 & last summer my mother & I watched Quadrophenia
@Jennifer Who no, what's it called?
This song is a true masterpiece! A work of art!
One of the greatest of all time!
Absolutely! Pure genius!!!
If you are still listening to this....hear it in your soul.....you are not old....Peace 🐦
When I was young, I'd see old people walking around with their walking sticks and white hair and just view them as a different species to me. It still shocks me when I look in the mirror and see I've become one of that species.

I too was one of the "lovers laying in the field"....We my friends are the very lucky ones....to be the sweet age ...for me 67 years young!...and to remember the songs and the vibes, oh and I hope for all of you the love that was a part of your life. I don't just live, I thrive. I wear my lovely blonde, graying hair waist length, straight and sometimes in a braid, I still camp, fly fish in the breathtaking streams and lakes of the Pacific Northwest, I still travel with my little dog anywhere I please, completed two cross-country trips 4 years ago...one year apart. And yes, I remember everything.....I do yoga, daily meditation and if I ache, smile, I see my acupuncturist.....and best of all, I still have a lover, best friend. The one I fell in love with when I was 16 years old.
Yes, he does the above things with me. But it's not required.🥰.... he's still managing, owning his own landscaping company that he's had for many years, with a large crew...some friends for over 30-40 years. If he's busy, which he usually is in the summer, I go camp, get a little peace, me time in the woods...well my ShihTzu with me.
And I play this and other familiar music out there. I hope we both live to see so many great years together. Did I mention he plays the hell out of a couple+ Stratocasters'
Being gray is a blessing, as I've now learned.... doesn't mean your soul can't still feel the music 🎶 🤣 🐦✌️
@@TonyEnglandUKplenty of people in the grave yard would love to be in your position,Rock on👊
@@ralphmehlhorn2920 lol good point
Very true
Literally one of the best musical compositions ever recorded. EVER
Without a single doubt.
Townshend
Pete Townsend at his best.
that's a bold statement from someone who can barely play the the triangle
Yes.
Daltrey's vocals in here are one of the best i've ever heard, he owned it completely. A true master of the craft.
The more I listen to the Who, the more I realize how great they were. They did not just copy old blues songs like many other British rock bands, they really created a whole new sound. So profound and so exciting.
I got into them in 80s my Wood Stock Uncle (yes he went) started me young at 10 and all these years later the songs become more meaningful.
Pete was truly a wordsmith
Roger had amazing range of powerful vocals and then the greatest rhythm section Keith could go all out however John was in complete control.
What a Band!!!
check out David Bowie A&E gig, one of his last.....ruclips.net/video/w1oRf1vbDMk/видео.html
They are still great!!!
@@deborahswanson3457 to me it has never really been the same without J.Entwistle and Keith.
Same here. The more you listen to segments of their albums the more you want to dig into them.
That epic yell of "LOVE!" at the very end is.....simply one of the most thrilling moments in rock history.
S C R E A Ming actually
Roger has a habit of casually making some of those most thrilling moments in rock history by just belting to all high heavens. Like when he cathartically yells "YEAHHHHHH" in Won't Get Fooled Again
@@thomasnelson5758 The greatest moment of any act I've seen live was the first good-bye tour in about 82. When that moment came, it was the most riveting thing I have seen to this day! I've seen everyone I wanted to, (back in the day when tickets didn't take a mortgage)
I agree 1000 %!!!!!Period The End!!!!
listen to wont get fooled again…
Man... We had some great music in the 70's
Totally agree, that's why we constantly play it 👍
The 70's were brilliant with bands like Pink Floyd, ,Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, of course the Who and let's not forget the underrated Wishbone ash 🤭🏴🏴😁🎸🎼
60s and 70s.
The best
Amen to that!
Singing this to my mom in hospice center. Her favorite song she saw live a long time ago. Love you Mom forever❤
That's beautiful. Bless your dear Mom! 💐🌞🐦🦋
Love is all that remains. You're doing it right.

You are a wonderful person and your mom was awesome mom don't ever forget what that meant to her.

The Who’s most underrated song. Great depth, melody, and nice dynamics.❤
Great moment in Quadrophenia, too
Underrated my arse*
You, clearly, don't know ANYTHING about this band. 😂😂

@@TonyEnglandUK .. Dennis Blandford approved your comment and a correction has been made 🎯
Roger Daltrey is one of those singers that sounds more in tune screaming and yelling than he does when he’s being soft. He defines what makes the perfect rock voice.
Bang Tooting Jesse, Comment of the day 😎✌
Its very pure no bullshit
Absolutely. And Pete Townshend's composition is perfect for him here. I think in classical terms, and this song is a concerto for Daltrey Scream and rock orchestra.
Daltry and Rodgers to me are STILL thee best rock vocalists out there.
Exactly like Eddie Vedder, which is what makes Pearl Jam’s version so good.
Pete Townsend really did a great job both composing and arranging this song. Keith Moon added his talent in the end too. Turned out to be one of their best pieces of work ever.
From1981 to forever
The simple double meaning of reign/rain in this song... as I sit tonight listening to the rain on the trees... soothed by the way love reigns over me from wife as well as our God.... 😊
Hi

Wish to get my love back.
I’d like for it to rain on me some day…TRUE unconditional LOVE!!
We need this song now more than ever!!!!

SEE ME
I think this is the most powerful and pure song I've ever heard.
After my husband had passed away i was missing him so much..one day i was doing chores listening to the radio and i said aloud to him bring me a song, one that could only come from you that ill know is you i love you. And id never heard this song before but when it came on the radio i knew it was him. I knew it was from him. I tried to write down some of the words. I waited for the dj to say the name or who did it but they didnt. Later a friend stopped by and was talking while i finished dishes. Then he says " love reign o'er me" . What? He said the who did it do u like the who? I turned and he had the paper id written the words on. I just love the song. My husband sent to me from up there. Its very potent. It said it all. Sometimes I can hardly wait to be reunited with him. ❤
One of the only songs that gets into every cell of my body . No words can really describe this , I wish music would still be art like this these days . This new generation is missing out on the blessing of real , soulful and brilliant music
I'm in complete agreement with you. There is nothing like the who. My first rock concert in 1976 sophomore in high school Seattle Washington at the coliseum speakers that were at least 20 ft high and the first drum of the guitar on unbelievable left me awestruck. Definitely my favorite band!! Lyrics of all the who songs are sophisticated, humorous and intelligent. The music that compliments them is undescribable. From live at Leeds and who's next to face dances and who are you it's all I need, the band that has truly adapted through the years to be the rock band of all times!
@@jonluebke2128 that would've been an absolute experience that one would die happily to have. Music like this is truly a gift to humanity. Pure SOUL .
I absolutely feel that too. The conviction he has to the words - and his soft to loud overtures are way ahead of his time - so 90s right - but there’s no voice in Rock like Daltry’s . The repeat of the synthesizer and the lonely guitar - it hits a space inside, that being outside in the rain alone- it just strikes a cord inside. It tears us apart, then it redeems us
Same here. This song touches my soul!
Ya got that rite my friend..hav it large n very loud.rok till ya drop.!!!!
Possibly the greatest song ever written, produced and recorded. MASTERPIECE.
Scott, I was young. I was out in California, far from my home in Ohio..for the first time. I was 21. When it came out. 1973. I had been a Who fan. Then...driving around south California in my company's rental car...I heard...This. It was amazing. It is amazing that people react to it like I did back then!
I want this as my funeral song.
Intense❤beautiful classic 🎼🩵🥁
I agree 😊
its not the greatest song and its not a masterpiece. stop writing nonsense
This vocal is legendary. The piano part is memorable for all pianists (they know why). The performance from the band is perfect. This is The Who at their very best.
Why
Yeah, I wanna know why too. What makes the piano so amazing?
Why??
The guitar work and galloping drums make the song.
Why?
The song goes out to all the hippest I grew up with in Tucson Arizona
This song is magic. Out of this world. My favorite of all times, no discussion.
This song has religious meaning to me. I can thirst & taste the cool cool rain.
ALL TIME SINGULAR VOCAL PERFORMANCE...omfGAWD
Totally agree
Let's discuss this....,
Me too
This is among the greatest songs ever written.
This song is proof that Daltrey is one of the best vocalists in the world
There are different styles, but in my opinion, flat out, there is no one better at leading a soul higher. :)
no one can sing his songs like him. Not Even Chris Cornell with his favolous voice!
To me he is the best.
I already knew
Pedro Henrique ~ and one of the sexiest - I'm 64 yrs and... I'd better shut up
One of the most majestic songs you will ever hear.
RIP Keith, we're still loving your work 2023, you absolute legend. 🖤
R.I.P. John & Keith. Long live the 'Oo.
Just saw Roger Daltry on TV. He said this is his favorite of The Who’s songs.
He said this was his favorite song to sing, so I had to come listen to it.
@@LindyJoy123 Beautiful, isn’t it?
He doesn't look 80 that's for sure! It was good to see him on Real Time. I can't wait to see the film that he's working in about Keith Moon. He had one hell of a life for 32 years. He passed in 1978 and people still talk about him. It should be an interesting documentary!
Daltrey has good taste in music.
Mine as well; and the video is epically spot on!
Powerful. Magnificent. Masterpiece.
Bad ass song any day, but especially on a rainy day
The best song has ever been made.
And one of the worst vids
I never tire of the who. And I'm a metal head for the most part. 66 years old now. I grew up with the who
Another masterpiece that never got the respect it so greatly deserved.
Dude it's one of their most highly acclaimed songs, google is your friend.
This is one of those songs that puts me in tears every time I hear it. It just has so much power and emotion behind it. One of the greatest bands of all time that I unfortunately didn’t get into until I was a little bit older. Pete Townshend is a musical genius who’s songs are life-changing.
This is one of those Who songs that makes you realize what an amazing composer Pete was. These 4 guys all on their own could compete with any orchestra in the world. So happy I got to see them perform this with an orchestra just last year, but it feels like a hundred years ago now.
This band is grossly underrated. Their sound was decades ahead.
The 1970's.... the Gold Mine of creation, recording, record releases, and touring. NOTHING has or ever will surpass it.
Baba O'Riley, Won't get Fooled Again, The Rock... And this incredible piece. Man, The Who is awesome.
Me too! The moon was full by me that night and the combination made ot magic.
Me also. I did get to see alwhistle play live before he passed. Every one except Moon. I think it was around 1997-1998 or so in Charlotte at the Pavilion.
It was outstanding. They played the entire Quadraphinios album cover to cover and then Pete picked up his Strat for the first time in forever and played electric guitar on the best of selections!
This song is so beautiful that it sent shivers down my spine.
Quadrophenia is one my favorite albums of all time it is truly brilliant
One of the best songs ..... Sends a chill up my spine in the opening intro so powerful.... Mr. Daltrey nails it but bad .... Such a powerful vocals he has still to this day in 2021.
Rock's # 1 masterpiece. Long Live The Who!
I recently saw the lads at Edinburgh Castle and they were absolutely magnificent.Roger’s voice was incredible, including this track. The orchestra are a great addition to the greatest band in the worlds music.Keep on rocking my boyhood heroes👍🏴
Edinburgh Castle. It's such a beautiful setting to see TheWho!
In the 70’s when I was very young, this song was playing loudly in an apartment where I lived during a thunderstorm in Denver, Co. I went out in the back where the song was blaring and laid down in a patch of grass and let the rain drench me while watching the lightening. To me as a kid, it was the closest I came to understanding the raw emotional power in a song and to this day I still feel the rain when I hear this song ❤❤❤❤
Btw. I got my butt beat for being outside in that mess but it was worth it for me ❤
THE WHO FOREVER! LONG LIVE THE WHO!
One of the most powerful songs of all-time ❤️
As soon as Daltrey started singing I got happy chills it's pouring rain here today that's why I looked this one up love this song I'm 71 and still rockin man! The Who !
Greatest song ever by anyone.
A scream that transcends generations
Fifty years on and this song has all the dynamics of a true rock composition.
Brilliance at its best in all aspects of rock music 👌❤️
A lustre that will never tarnish.
My son played in a church worship band from Redding, ca. The Who chose this small band to open for them during their U.S. tour. I believe the reason this song is so loved and touches so many people, including me is it touches a yearning for a truth hidden within us. Love- - (Christ Love )Riegn - ( rule) Ore - ( over, within, entirely ) ME
Could be the greatest beginning to any song.....EVER!
I can't think of another song that reaches me like this one does.
One of the few songs that have ever brought a tear to my eye...there is just something about this song
that hits you just right. I just saw The Who perform this live a few weeks ago and it was epic to say the least.
I used this as the stimulus for writing in my year six class (11 yrs). God, they loved it! Gave them the lyrics and they were singing along by the second chorus. Did work based on what the beast said when he returned home and another piece advertising the benefits of living in the City of Gold. Kids produced some of the best work in my 35 career.
The genius of the 1973 double album Quadrophenia is how the whole thing leads up to... and ends with... this song. Absolute genius. This song stands well alone, but it is best heard as the finale that it is, after listening to the rest of album.
I'll be 58 this week, this song is bringing me back over 42 years to when I was 16. I met my 1st true love the night of The Who concert in Buffalo the night after the Cincinnati tragedy. What a concert, what a night.
Hi, from Ukraine 🇺🇦💪
Damn you was racist in the 1900s fasho fasho
I hope you are still together
got u beat. 66 here. but still riding my bike 30 miles once in a while. Only saw them once. At Gianys Stadium in 89. played 3.5 hours.
This has always been, and will always remain, my favorite Who song.
Love....a beautiful lady,a beautiful song.. then tell your children you're diagnosed with cancer with in two weeks.. strong song and strong people... luck to all people in the same condition... yeah we love great music...❤❤xx
There is a spiritual intensity to this song that is unique.
The who man. I have no words. Im young so this music isn't played at everyone's house now a days jaja. But finding music like this, it's like finding hidden gems. The intro is so beautifully crafted, and Rodgers vocals really make this song. The composition is incredibly amazing.
Quite possibly the Who's greatest song. And what a way to close out what is undoubtedly (at least in my mind) the single greatest album of all-time. Such a shame they didn't play it live very much while Moonie was still with us.
And I don't know about you, but I think this song isn't a "typical love song" by any means. I say that because every single time I listen to it is a spiritual experience that cuts to the core...and then some.
There are masterpieces in every genre. Classical has Moonlight Sonata, Great Mass in C Minor, Der Erlkonig; jazz has Kind of Blue, Mingus Ah Um, A Night in Tunisia; classic rock has Love Reign O'er Me.
I'm just gonna say, this is still in my opinion, the best song ever created. Even transcending multiple genres of music. Its the only song I know that has interchangeable lyrics, that adapts itself to everyone's thoughts and struggles.
I feel like this song encapsulates all the anger, sadness, hope, courage of everyone who has ever lived into one song. And I feel like this song is truly represents the meaning of life, which is love. Not just in terms of relationships in friends and family, spouse and such (that would be too cheesy of an answer), but the love of oneself and the love of living life is the answer to all. That will to continue on, no matter how much life tries to not, it may very from person to person what they want, but whatever kind of love makes you happy, healthy and balanced, only one of them or multiple of them, go for it. We will all go through bad times, good times, but the most important thing is we know how to persevere through it and process the emotions.
We all need true, non-superficial love to survive, otherwise life is meaningless, no matter how old you are, 18 or 80, we need that will to carry on with grace, and not let life turn us into what a young person needs to avoid and what sadly many old people act like. Which is bitter.
Just had to put this here. This song speaks to me in ways other songs don't.
This song just blows me away. I'm an ageing rocker now but this eats into my very existence. Love my music it keeps me alive and focused. Rogers voice is phenomenal absolute power. Realy really awesome. Music will never die.....
This one of the best songs of all Time no question!!!🤘🏿
I love 80s songs but I have to admit few had this level of pure passion.
One of the best rock songs ever... And one of the best singing as well...
The Who created a true masterpiece with this song.
I have been listening to this song for over 50 years and never get tired of it. There are many great musicians & performers from the 60's & 70's. Roger Daltrey, Robert Plant, & Jim Morrison are by far the top 3 on my list of favorites.
I was born in the 50's, raised on 60's music, pop, rock and roll, blues. motown, Hard rock. Loved Cream, Mountain, Humble Pie, etc. I thought about all the videos, MTV, etc of what group I would love to see live over any other group--The Who!!
Excellent thing about this song is that I was once listening to it and I kid you not it actually started raining right as Roger Daltrey sang "only love can bring the rain that falls like tears from on high"
Same here. Radio station put it on because it was going to rain. They've done that a few times.
It's sad this type of music will never exist again, but it's beautiful
It certainly is a beautiful tune..The vocals, the piano, the violins, the deeply heartfelt emotion of roger when he screams, love, reign on me...
Quite simply, a truly great song from a truly great band. And the vocals from roger daltrey are on another stratosphere.
In my opinion.
This is the best song ever made. Its perfection. Down to everything.
Man what a great song! It hasn't rained in a month where I live. Woke up to a steady rain and the WHO!!!
Only love will keep this song alive.
I'm finally appreciating the incredible work and talent of The Who. ❤❤❤
Who?
Pete,"hey guys i wrote this little poem about love". A spell later, one of the greatest who productions ever.
Truly one of the Greatest Bands in Rock n Roll!!!!!! Amazing❤
I grew up with the who and I'll die with them too the greatest Rock band in all history
Bell Boy!!!! I'm a man in his mid 30s but i love the film Quadrophenia and this is probably the only album i need 😸
They played this at Edinburgh Castle last night as the sun set behind them. Great rendition and an amazing evening ❤
Keith Moon is the only drummer that makes me feel the same way I do when I listen to a great guitar solo. From 5:02 on it's just unreal.
Absolutely agree. MINDBLOWN shit for sure. Mad respect for Entwistle too.
Moon the loon was the man, Townsend said it was like a jet was taking off behind him when moon would kick in on the drums. Pete would slowly turn around to see the spectacle and moon would give him that crazy grin! This is Rock and Roll!
The drums and bass is what drives me!!!
Sounds like water
Isn't it amazing to think how young he was when he died. Tragic. His drumming on "Who Are You" shows that he could have gone on for sure. Legend. A hero of my other favourite drummer, Neil Peart.
The Who are phenomenal! Musical maestros!
Beautiful ❤❤❤ the way it should be........
I wanted this groovy awesome song to be my wedding song. At 67 , I still love it❤
Such a great song. Only love can make it rain, LOVE reign on me!!!
Loved watching The Who perform!!!
Great band. 👍
This tune has always reminded me of a young Roger Daltrey running bare-chested through a field of hay during a rainstorm. A prayer of exceeding joy, gratitude and love is upon his lips. Love reign over all of us. Heaven knows we need it!
Quad has been one of my favourite films (and albums)… every tune! Watched it several times a week for a few years… the music and the story!!
Epic Masterpiece! No other words for this!
Hearing it on the radio too often I had forgotten how deep of a connection I have with Quadrophenia and this song in particular. Until the other day, at random I decided to play it on my drums. Then it all came flooding back. I was 14 when it came out, and this album, with Keith Moons performance as a guide, I learned to play drums. A couple of years later my high school girlfriend gave me a St. Christopher medallion with Love Reign Oe'r Me engraved on the back. And my mom was a saint for putting up with all pounding and crashing for all those years!
This song is absolutely a great masterpiece. No doubt
My favourite song by The Who.... mod revival in the 80s when I was at school and it takes me right back to those days. The nights spent with friends watching Quadrophenia over and over again. The memories ❤
Gorgeous video for a massively underrated and gorgeous song.
Gorgeous video? It's awful. Even fucked up the lyrics.
Except the errors on some of the lyrics ("Lovers" not "Love Birds") but still a great song and mostly on the mark.
Whoever created this video is an artistic genius.
Such a brilliant and beautiful song. Can't say enough about it.
When those chords come in at, "on the dry and dusty road". Instant eargasm.
Hauntingly prolific arranged to perfection one of the greatest ballads to date 🎸🎵🎻🎹🤘
I was fortunate enough to have seen them in concert back in the late 60's. The were a superb band live.
Brilliant.......this must be one of the greatest pop classics of all time.....
Music is the best psychiatrist there is for yourself and your soul
Pete Townshend is the best composer, not just the best guitarist of his time. The perfect company in that voice that defines how a rock singer's voice should be is Roger Daltrey. Keith Moon is the paradigm of a rocker attitude, as well as the perfect drummer and John Entwistle is the virtuoso musician, who did the best job a bass player can do. This results in not only perfect songs, but masterpieces that will never go out of style, such as Love Reign O'er me. And many others.
John Entwhistle was not just a stellar bassist, but an excellent brass arranger and player.
He is simple different , an extraordinary exponent of his own style
@@GM-de6mv I still have to learn who he is. I will not find out what motivated him without a deep dive. But at this juncture what better reason is there than to play the bassist? I fell for one once long ago. I knew him for 3 weeks and never got to see him again. All I have left are my memories and those were so hard to ingrain in myself lasting memories. But I have a few. What’s more than that is I have his son. More like the sun as he lives and breathes. I am more blessed in my lack’s than most of you are in your richness. But a good bassist really can’t be heard anyway can he? Les really takes over a song and I like bass that doesn’t overcook my musical eggs. Fun.
Roger - YOU - are my HERO!!! Go on and go with LOVE Brother!!!
