Really enjoyable to shoot Fuji X cameras with film lenses. I used to throw one of my favorite Minolta lenses, the 50mm f/1.4 Rokkor X on my XT3 for wedding and portrait work. Really great look.
Zoom in plus focus peaking made shooting vintage lenses so easy and enjoying on mirrorless. I actually think xs10 is even better because of IBIS. It makes a lot difference when on 85mm or 135mm. Also zone focusing is really cool! You don't even need to check the screen or view finder, just confident that you can have the subject in focus.
You're killin' me, man! After being a dedicated Leica-M user for decades, the bad taste in my mouth from their bungled first digital, the M8, caused me to sell the entire kit: bodies plus all my Leica lenses. Now (years later) I've discovered the Fuji X-E3 and sorely wish I still had my Summicron 35mm f/2 lens. Love your videos.
I do use zone focusing all the time with my Fuji lenses. The only thing I do is to use an elastic around focus ring to prevent me to turn it accidentally and then use a pre defined button to focus at a determined range zone. Then I am ready to “hit” the street. Btw great as always!
This is EXACTLY the reason I've pre-ordered an X-E4, I'm so happy you made this video. I have a couple of M-mount lenses I use with an M6 and really wanted a tiny camera that I could use that glass with. Super excited for it to arrive. Great video!
Great video Faizal! I love relaxing on a Friday afternoon to your videos. You have inspired my to do more street photography with your videos, so thank you!
Owned X-E1 couple of years ago and had tried it with many adapter. Best experience was adapting it on Leica M and also once I had it with adapter to Contax G1 lenses.. sweet super sweet. Still keep those adapters and only missing a Fujifilm camera. Awesome video and pictures as always, so now I'm thinking to get an X-E4 after watching this video I guessed
@@FaizalWestcott at that time I was very much spoiled by focus peeking which didn't come as features on my M8. Next time I got hands again on fuji system will stick it on zone focussing.
Crazy how similar this set up actually looks to the CLE ! I loved using adapted glass on my XT3 when I had it, I used to rock the Nikkor 55 micro, hands down one of the sharpest lenses I ever used and I loved how it rendered colors.
Also love that this ended up being a coincidental lens review for one of the lenses I’ve thought about picking up to adapt to my Fujifilm. The 28mm looks great. Very curious on the 40mm FoV on Fuji tho, would be dope if you did a video on that.
I've got both the the Urth M-to-X and F-to-X mount adapters for my X-Pro2. I usually only throw them on when I'm feeling a little bored, but lately, they're all I've been using. I just tried the M-Rokkor 40mm--which is an awesome little lens (and which you can get for pretty cheap for M-mount glass. The quality was excellent, but the ~60ish focal length was a little strange for me. Usually, I'm using my Nikkor 28mm f2.8 or my Zeiss Biogon f2. I don't get anything other than a standard angle, but put things on 16:9 and you get movie frames. The focus peaking and OVF viewer make manual lenses a joy to use on the X-Pro system. I just wish the ranges were accurate (the M-mount lenses, in particular, seem to think they're a little closer than they are).
On your x100V you should easily be able to zone focus and the speed and mushiness of the focus by wire becomes irrelevant as you shoot your zone. In manual focus just set it to your distance and know your zone for the aperture set. If you change your manual focus scale (enable for screen and or viewfinder) to film rather than pixel then the blue bar shown will better represent the acceptable depth of focus for current settings. Hope it helps a bit.
I really enjoy the Voigtlander 35mm nokton adapted onto my xpro 3. it's a great little 50ish equivalent and produces some of my fav work I've made with the camera. with focus peaking turned on it worked well One drawback of that setup is unfortunately the OVF doesn't correct for parallax anymore but felt really natural to use regardless!
I just bought a 7Artisans 35/1.2 for my Xpro1, love everything about it, the only con is the OVF, no correction as you mentioned. The thibg that bothers me most is the frame lines are completely off, so framing us very odd..
You can zone focus with any Fuji lens/camera combination by using the distance/DoF scale in the viewfinder. Focus on a point and then adjust the aperture for the 'zone' of DoF you want. If I could live with a .62x VF mag. and no IBIS I'd get one, but 70 year old eyes and hands preclude that.
I have been shooting photos with a Takumar 55mm F1.8 on Olympus OM-D E-M MarkII for a long time. I shoot it set as Apture priority and it takes beautiful Bokeh.
Yup. I'm such a big fan of the 65mm focal length on my iphone tele lens. Looks like this is the only solution to get close enough to that focal length and I like it. I wish fuji film had xf43mm or something though. Next best thing is this. Thanks for the video!
Nice man. I’ve actually been doing this for a while on my X-E3 and will continue to do it on my X-E4 when it arrives. I love manually focussing and the short focus throw on old rangefinder lenses makes it way quicker than with a modern lens or SLR lens. Love the Leica/Fuji combo. ❤️
That's awesome man! It's nothing new but people forget we can do this with cameras, especially when a new one comes out. No need for super expensive adapters either if you find the right one
Almost my entire kit uses my vintage Pentax, Nikon, Minolta, and even Mamiya glass. I shoot a ton of Mamiya (645 Pro TL, RB67 ProSD, C220, and C330) these days and the rest are either from me shooting Pentax or Nikon/Minoltas I've been given over the years or spotted dirt cheap in good/restorable condition at flea markets. When I shot Sony I think the only lens I had was the kit lens I got bundled for free on special. Now I shoot MFT with an E-M5 II and Pana G9. I've been trying to decide if I want to get an E-M1 III for handheld hi-res + improved IBIS or a Fuji X-pro(2/3)/X-S10/X-T30 to accompany my XF10 compact camera. The film simulations are a big draw, they complement that softer look/feel of vintage glass quite well.
Interesting video. I just ordered an M adapter for Fuji, so this caught my eye. I grew up with zone focusing, so that was a considerable motivation. Also, I used to live in MA, so all the Boston scenes were great to see. Thanks for this post.
Fantastic video sir, I'm a wedding videographer so I'm torn between this and the x100v to take with me as a B cam and for shooting photography. I like how the xe4 can shoot video for upto 30 mins compared to only 10 mins on the x100v.
I tried this too, but I noticed that non-fujifilm glass doesn't play well with the colour rendition. You get some clashes where certain hues are off, like red looking more brick red, or extra green tinting which can't always be corrected in white balance shift. BW is fine though. ✌️
Hey Faizal, Stunningly Beautiful Pictures Thank you man a Real Pleasure to See.....!!!! I have only ever used adapted lenses on my Fuji cameras and settled on small primes which is just such a pleasure every time.... Mostly my 2 beloved and just insanely sharp Pentax m 50's with and without Eos speed booster (50 and 75mm) and likewise with Helios 44m 58mm f2 and Super tak 55mm f2 and super sharp 28mm so can def fully concur that the small primes experience is such a lovely, lovely thing.... and really adds to the pleasure of the handling of the camera & the composition and creative experience as well, and use this setup for a descent proportion of my professional work.... Thanks for a Lovely Video, to remind me of why I love this kind of setup so much as well :)
You do know that Fuji cameras have a zone focusing scale built in the LCD or EVA and it's really accurate and you can use it regardless if you're using Fuji lenses or old film manual lenses.
Loved this video! Your street photos and music added, made me both relaxed and inspired! More X-E4, please. If you have the time, would you please explain your best setup now that there's one scroll wheel missing. I've become very comfortable using both wheels on all my Fujis, so I hope I can adapt easily.
It's a bit annoying not having it I will admit. But I always had it set as my shutter speed anyway, and with the actual shutter speed dial being very smooth (smoother to turn than the x100v actually) it hasn't been much of an issue for me.
Great video. I bought an x100t with a non functioning screen a couple years ago and still use it. This probably sounds nuts, but.. If you want the film experience, get some gaffer tape and tape over the screen. It took me some time to adjust but after a bit, I really enjoy shooting with it. I think for me, it's close enough to film, without the expense. Turn off the menus, range focus, and just do auto ISO. I'm thinking about getting the X-E4 and honestly.. I might just do the same thing again.
Ohh damn, I used to have a minolta cle too. I shoot fuji also. Looking to pick up an xpro 3 in a week and probably start acquiring some leica lenses over time. Thanks for the video
Thank you for the video because it answers questions I had. I don't get why Fuji didn't implement the focus ring locking mechanism in it's small lenses or X100 like there's on the 23mm 1.4. I prefer to shoot with zone focusing but Fuji's focusing rings are so smooth that they are unreliable without this locking mechanism. I bought the Mitakon 35mm 0.95 just to have a cheap reliable manual lens with a gorgeous zone focusing chart (I miss that so much). I was looking into that Fuji's adapter thinking about acquiring some good manual lenses and I'm looking to use my old Pentax ones too. It's really not about being kind of a snob, it's just that there's times for reliable autofocus and times for manual focusing.
Man I wish Fujifilm made a Full frame X-E4 with a true rangefinder (or a larger digital viewfinder). I love both my X-E3 and Minolta CLE, but the crop factor isn’t that great for film era lenses, and the small viewfinder on the X-E cameras makes manual focus less fun. The Minolta is a small and light Camera, so the X-pro series is too bulky and heavy to make the shooting experience similar.
What a great video! I'm currently looking into Fuji + glass with distance scale instead of a Leica Q2 (mainly because of the price) and I never thought about looking into other lenses than the Fujinon ones. Thank you!
Hi. Nice video. By the way, more recent film cameras have AF, so shooting film is not always manual focusing. My Nikon 90x has AF, but obviously my FE has not.
Nice clip. How is Fuji peaking clear, fast and reliable for manual focus? I use manual lens with Sony and its peaking system is terrible. I would appreciate for your advice.
Quick question: when adapting your Leica lens onto this, did the focus distance scale actually correspond to the distance you focused to? I'm thinking of buying a Voightlander lens to adapt on this or an XE3 because I prefer zone focusing. I can't confidently do that with the infinite wire focus on most Fuji lenses with the way I work on the street. I prefer to prefocus and just shoot when my subject walks into the zone I'm in. But I've read reviews elsewhere that the distance scale doesn't match up because of the different distance between the sensor and the back element of the lens vs film cameras or a full frame digital Leica. wonky question, but just wondering what your experience was?
I've been using M-mount adapters since the XE2. The frustrating answer is that most adapters are slightly too thin to accommodate variances in manufacturing tolerances and so your zone focus will be a little back focused. But there is a work around! And that's the close-focus adapter version. With it you can put your M lens at infinity, then focus the adapter to infinity. Then you have a solid starting point for zone focusing.
I like the black taping. looks cool!. The P mode in dial button can not be used as auto mode? Is there no aperture priority or shutter priority mode? If I want to use this as back up camera to take wedding pics with prime camera, is this fine? Or should go for T-30?
What a good idea! Thought I will find nothing on internet about M lens to Fuji, thanks for doing this. But is the M lens and XE4 body combo limited to shoot with screen and doesnt work with the viewfinder?
Do anyone have an advice to a adapt a vintage lends to get a 35mm field of view? “This is the way” I have been adapting vintage lends to my Fuji since ever, even working at the street with a 50mm (75mm on apsc) it’s a challenge. Great video. Faizal
Hi Faizal! Thank you for your videos/reviews! They´re very useful. I´m thinking about buying a X-E4 with a 16mm and a 35mm f2 lenses and I´m also planning to use it with dozens of vintage lenses that I have. Is it easy to use the fuji X-E4 with focus peaking? I never used a fuji camera before but I have/had a lot of canon, sony and leica cameras (dslr and mirrorless).
I like to adapt my vintage nikon glass on to my fuji body. Works great. Leica glass is endgame for sure but if I ever dropped it or something I'd probably just step in front of a bus lol.
Lol! Well you could go the "cheap" lecia glass route and get one of these Minolta branded m mount glass that are still really good in quality. They hover around the $500 range
I hate the X-E4 logo in this camera and is the main reason I haven´t purchased it. How did you hide it? It´s only a black tape or is something else? Because it looks so beautiful! Thank you!
I almost exclusively just shoot my X-E2 with vintage glass. My only native Fuji mount lens is the 23mmF2 and a Rokinon 12mm. How do you like the Minolta M mount IQ on the X-E4? I'm sure it comes out different from your film shots considering it's cropped. Seriously tempted to get the X-E4 with 29mm kit lens to get that CLE aesthetic.
I asked Big Head Taco the same thing, and he said the only thing it affects is the depth of field. So you’re get wider depth of field at 1.5x, bigger zone of focus.
own that adapter thinking to get some M mount lens FIRST in anticipation of getting a leica in the future in which case when i do get one ill have the lens to mount on the leica. haha maybe working back wards here but seem to make sense to me. - but over the years i dont really feel like i "need" a leica ever and just look for good M mount lens (either 3rd party artisans or voigtlaender etc) that are worth using. nice reflections on the 5:15 mark though currently use adapted OM lens and Vivitar PL mount lens (50mm f2) and its pretty nice when i dont have an af version of those lens
Interesting! That's a great plan too. It's pretty nice that these adapters exist so we can use such great glass on whichever camera body regardless of brand.
Hey Faizal! Quick question about the zone focusing. Your 28 is like a 42 with the crop sensor, so you have to adapt it when using the marks on the lens right? Because the focus zone won't be the same than a 28 on a FF sensor? Am I right or not? Keep doing the good work, your chanel is great :)
Probably the reason Fujifilm initially offered their own Leica adapter was that they saw this as a stopgap measure until they filled out their own lens range. The should have made it much cheaper though. Voigtlander Cosina also makes a nice but horribly overpriced Leica adapter that incorporates a close-focus mechanism.
Interesting video, thank you. I now own both the X-e3 and 100v. The former with an adaptor. Trying to figure out which one to keep. Leaning towards the X-e3 and mixing up different lenses. Did you end up keeping both the 100v and x-e4?
Somebody says that the picture in EVF is quite soft when taking photo. But it is sharp when playback in EVF. Do you have problem to use peaking focus with Leica lens? Is it clear and easy to see peaking focus point in EVF? I have some LEICA lenses and would like to use them with XE-4. I would appreciate for your advice.
Cool video! But I see that you shoot more B/W photos recently. Any special reason? I'm just wondering because your colour photos are always really awesome and inspiring. I never really got into B/W-photos personally, but Your compositions are pretty cool!

It's so nice. You still hanging onto any fuji cameras?
Btw I find shooting with manual lenses an absolute joy with focus peaking. Makes it feel like you're shooting film but in a more reliable, faster way.
Y'all realize that there are film cameras out there with blazing fast auto-focus, right? LOL You don't have to use only manual focus lenses with film.
@@jimmason8502 thats hobbyist. Different from pro. The lower the speed the better it is. Thats why i still use f5 with milvus 50 lol

My fav type of adaption
Hey Faizal, great stuff - curious to know is there focus confirmation when you switch on shoot without lens? Thanks!
Nice clip. How is Fuji peaking clear, fast and reliable for manual focus? I use manual lens with Sony and its peaking system is terrible. I would appreciate for your advice.
Tempting to get this and a 21mm skopar (32 equivalent)
I’m wondering the same. Would love to have an answer!
Nice camera. 7:58 Limitations translates to missed opportunities. Not an option when doing a street shoot.
Faizal... do you own the Summilux M 50mm f1.4?
I like to adapt my vintage nikon glass on to my fuji body. Works great. Leica glass is endgame for sure but if I ever dropped it or something I'd probably just step in front of a bus lol.
Lol! Well you could go the "cheap" lecia glass route and get one of these Minolta branded m mount glass that are still really good in quality. They hover around the $500 range
I hate the X-E4 logo in this camera and is the main reason I haven´t purchased it. How did you hide it? It´s only a black tape or is something else? Because it looks so beautiful! Thank you!
And what about the cheap x-e3 that we can get for 350-400 euros? Do you think is a good option in 2021? Great videos. Thank you for your time.
The X-E3 is great, I have it. More controls than the X-E4 but the LCD does not flip out if that matters. Get it.
Loved this video, I really need to get into the fuji system
U made that camera so beautiful 😍
I'm really committed to copy you, but with the Nokton 40mm f1.4 instead
Do you just leave it on AF-S when using manual lenses since it doesn’t matter if you are using zone focusing anyways?
Great video, thanks bro 🤙🏼
Samuel says "That really is nice".
Try a Voitlander lens. Equally as good as any Leica lens for a more reasonable price.
Why didn't you use focus peaking?
Beautiful images! Does the dof scale on the lens also corrispond on a 1,5x crop sensor?
I asked Big Head Taco the same thing, and he said the only thing it affects is the depth of field. So you’re get wider depth of field at 1.5x, bigger zone of focus.
@@segzeeman7356 thank you. I thought the exactly opposite: usually bigger the sensor, wider the dof. Isn't it?
weird question, u know, cause even in the good'ol 2012, x-pro 1 had adapter included for leica M..
own that adapter thinking to get some M mount lens FIRST in anticipation of getting a leica in the future in which case when i do get one ill have the lens to mount on the leica. haha
maybe working back wards here but seem to make sense to me. - but over the years i dont really feel like i "need" a leica ever and just look for good M mount lens (either 3rd party artisans or voigtlaender etc) that are worth using.
nice reflections on the 5:15 mark
though currently use adapted OM lens and Vivitar PL mount lens (50mm f2) and its pretty nice when i dont have an af version of those lens
Interesting! That's a great plan too. It's pretty nice that these adapters exist so we can use such great glass on whichever camera body regardless of brand.
I felt that part when you pulled out those hand warmers 😂 this winter time shooting is no joke on the hands 😂😂
Amazing, that's a deadly combo
Did you see that there is a special adaptor for leica short lenses? Check on the Pronto adaptor for Fuji and Sony. :)
You mention "Leica lenses" but it seems to be Minolta lenses, right?
Loved the idea. I found the softness in photos very film like. Have you additionally applied blur in post or is it how the lens shoots?
None added! Might just be slightly out of focus
Love this. Preordering now!
Thanks Ryan! Been a huge fan of your work btw 😄
@@FaizalWestcott well my friend, the feeling is mutual. eagerly waiting for your next video! (we should go shoot sometime!)
@@ryanboothfilmmaker would love to man! I’ll be sure to hit you up on IG next time I’m in town
Is your handgrip the original one from Fujifilm?
한국에선 쉽게 찾기힘든 리뷰 감사드립니다.
