Ahrimam is one of the most interesting characters in 40K, and that's up against some stiff competition. He never wanted any of this, and he only had the best of intentions. He is so powerful and yet still only a pawn in the Great Game. A tragic figure to be sure.

    • @dinocha0s

@@dinocha0s,.true but unlike Kharn or Lucius his atrocities have a purpose. As befits the champion of Tzeentch there is always a hidden motive. His moves, made over centuries, have all been building towards the one goal of recasting the Rubric and restoring his brothers. The battle in the Webway is really telling of his character. Yvraine restored some of the Rubricae to life and then spilled them into the Warp, without a second thought Ahriman hurled himself after them shouting "Brothers!"

I mean Ahriman himself is a good analgoue for Odin. He's born of a warrior race but isn't the greatest warrior, possesses magical talent but isn't the best, sacrificed something vital to him for understanding, and failed everyone he loved by seeking an impossible answer. It goes further than that too since Ahirman has a big one eyed staff he carries everywhere.
Odin sought to halt fate, and prevent Ragnarok. Ahriman sought to halt fate, and cure the flesh change.
Odin's very efforts to stop Ragnarok brought it about. Ahriman's efforts to fix the flesh change invoked the most grievous of changes upon his brothers.

Ahriman is honestly such a fascinating and complex character! He was a kind and wise man, dedicated to humanity's progress and the dream of a brighter future. He had a hobby as a wine farmer, and his wine was appreciated by primarchs from other legions. (Perturabo had a bottle)
Arrogance, folly and betrayal took him down a dark road. The betrayal of Magnus, Russ, The Emperor, Horus and others combined with his own character made him a monster, but he is still a very human monster.
The main thing about Ahriman the Mage, is his understated subtlety. Oh, he is perfectly able and willing to thrown massive amounts of raw power around; fire, lighting, laser, time-manipulation and so forth, but he mostly doesn't
He fights with small things; he will see the future, and move his blade to counter yours perfectly, he will fight in an area, that he prepared before hand, he will let others do the heavy lifting first and so on. He manages to be immensely powerful, but not brass or crude with his power.
Another key aspect of him character, is he infernal ability to sound reasonable, understanding and human. Other Thousands Son's often comments, that even though they know him to be a manipulator, betrayer and killer, he always appears to argue for the hard but necessary choice. He still thinks himself a tragic hero rather then a monster or amoral, so he can mourn his dead brothers, as he actively sacrifices some of his oldest companions to further his ends.
Of all the Chaos marines, he is one of the very few, that can still think himself a "good" person by somewhat conventional morality, even as he commits warcrimes aplenty.
Disgusting Hypocrisy and self delusion? Yes, but you can't help but cheer him on, as he goes through hell on a doomed qust to save his beloved Legion.

Always felt bad for Ahriman. I get the funny feeling that if he were to take off his helmet you'd see a tired, sad old man. He was completely led astray by Magnus, who was himself led astray by the Emperor, he made a mistake and now he's spent literally 10,000 years trying to put things right.
I'd probably have sacked it off after a few hundred tbh. Found me some Slaaneshi girls and a battlebarge and just straight up leave the galaxy.

Ahriman spent over 10,000 years in exile, he's actually only come back to the galactic stage relatively recently, for the past 10,000~ years he's been serving lesser chaos lords and acting weak as a form of "punishment", he let himself be abused by men far more powerful than himself in the name of punishment, he thought about killing himself several times, when asked why he never did? Because deep down he had hope, in his own words aswell, Ahriman straight up said that he had hope that things would get better, that he or somebody else would have a chance to fix things.

We actually have met his twin brother Ohrmuzd. He is referred to in 'A Thousands Sons' by Graham McNeill and 'Ahriman:Exile' by John French
      SPOILERS
He's very dead, we won't meet him in the 42nd millennium.

Ahriman is such a tragic figure. Watching his brothers besieged by the wolves, only to unwillingly betray all he knew in the Imperium, to watching his brothers fall victim once again, to exile for having the heart to attempt to save those beloved by him.

Oooo. One of fav characters. Narrated by baldy himself. Fantastic.
Edit: Very interesting choice of music. During the story segment. Is that an actual piece of warhammer music? Its upbeat but strangely eerie. Like carnival music, with hints of classical inspiration and composition throughout.

Very good video. Ahriman is definitely one of the most interesting characters of the traitor legions. And my favorite chaos champion. He is not an one dimensional villan , he is complex, has a justifiable cause and his own agenda that is not just follow the will of the chaos god.
I see him as a perfect representation of the thousand sons themself. Exiled for failing on his noble iniciative. A failed , but never a traitor. One that tried his best to help his allies and got punished for that.
Magnus rejected Ahriman the same way the emperor rejected him.
