You did not mention that mixing a Curtain3 with Curtain2 on a dual curtain setup does not work as I found out the hard way. No backward compatibility when used in a dual curtain arrangement. I am having to buy another Curtain3 to get my curtains to work. I have one other window with the original Curtain1 pair and if they fail as one has already, I will be forced to buy two new devices, either Curtain2 or Curtain3. My older solar panels do not work on the new Curtain3.
You could use the older solar panels on a Curtain3 but would stick straight out horizontally and probably hit the window. I enjoyed your video comparison and would agree that for most common use upgrading from 2 to version 3 is not warranted. Version pairing is a bigger issue if one needs to replace one.
