Finally got round to venturing into the adit of Kettleness Tunnel, and two adits in Sandsend Tunnel.
Really wouldn't recommend going into any of the adits in the Sandsend Tunnel, the first is a dead end, the second is flooded, just shy of waist deep - both are floored with thick gloopy, deep clay; roof supports showing some severe splintering in parts also.
Wont be too long before there's another collapse on the Sandsend Tunnel, when this does happen, it'll probably close off the tunnel completely.

** Got dates wrong in video commentary, the rail closed in the 50's, the mentioned collapse of the Sandsend Tunnel Portal was in the late 80's

I have walked down cleavland way so many times... I've never realised that there was an exit to the tunnel right over where I was talking

Excellent video. I've not been through those tunnels since the 80s , the kettleness adit was always crawlable but I don't ever remember seeing light in either of the Sandsend ones. I wonder if they were both bricked up but the wall on the second one has come down. Not sure what the diesel smell is very few diesels worked through it. A couple of diesel multiple units on excursions and a shunter when they lifed the track but that was nearly 65 years ago so can't imagine you could still smell any spills. The North portal collapse was about 20 years ago
    Cheers

Yeah, the daylight on the southern adit of the SE Tunnel, I cant remember it being visible either - I think its collapsed a few years ago and exposed itself... I wont be crawling through again, the shale is very very loose; ready to come down again for sure..

@@whiterosealtitude I was amazed you got through. Cliff looks a bit steep for trying to find the other one. Sandsend is looking quite rough nowadays don't think it will last too much longer. I remember in the 80s you could walk in freely at either end

@@maestromanification made a return visit on 7th March to get right to end of adit closest to north portal of SE Tunnel. The adit is flooded almost waist deep at the far end, its blocked with a brick wall but appear to go further on the other side, which cant be accessed at all. To the left of the end of the adit, there is some sort of mine, probably jet, but again; this cant be accessed due to the timber supports. Really do not recommend anybody goes into this adit, its very dangerous, with rottten timbers and extreme bowing and splintering in places.

@@whiterosealtitude wow! Wasn't expecting that. I wonder if the mine predates the tunnel and they broke into it when driving the adit?
It may have been filled in on the outside when they finished the tunnel.
Have you had a look on the cliff side for any evidence of it or is it too steep?

@@maestromanification Difficult to tell. Didn’t spend too much time in the adit, and could only see through the small gaps twixt the timber supports. Will be investigating further from above ground, and going over cliff edge to see if there’s any evidence of the adit that is blocked.
