Abandoned Kettleness Railway Tunnel on the Closed Whitby to Redcar Railway

- Kettleness formed part of the Whitby, Redcar & Middlesbrough Union Railway. Work began in 1871, the plan, was to have elevated sections of railway above the sea, tied into the cliff edge.
The Chief Contractor, a Mr J H Tolmé, was often given to exaggerate and prone to telling the board of directors what he thought they wanted to hear.
This railway was funded and owned by shareholders who were keen to get the railway open to see their investments flourish.
However, the contractor ran out of money and was sacked in 1874 when work had stopped.
The original plan, of elevating the railway along the cliff edge, proved too difficult, due to the lack of expected bedrock.
Soft sandstone, clay and chalk were often encountered, and could not be used to elevate from.
The North Eastern Railway was asked by the board of directors, to save the railway and complete the build.
After checking the design, it was rubbished by NER and a new route was proposed, incorporating today’s Kettleness Tunnel which we are going to explore.
The railway opened on the 3rd of December 1883. The Kettleness tunnel raises to the north at an elevation of 1:62 and is 308 yards or 208 meters long for the metric folk.

Hi Natalie. Thank you :)
Cool video Andy
Thank you Markurbex
Arh yes , ive watched again and your crew mentioned the capped air vents, I thought it also had air vents , but weren't sure. 5 vents in total . Shame it closed most have been really stunning ride in the day, certainly better than being slow driving behind a caravan like every summer on the roads. lol
Hello Richie. Yes the only sign is the bricks at the bottom. I wonder how good the capping is at the top? Maybe a tractor will put a wheel through.
I see my name is still on the wall before u go in to the entrance..oz Loftus.i put that on the in 1999 when you get from both ends..I went though it a lot when I used to go to whitby..its fun when is fogy..
Once found a smashed up, burnt laptop about the middle of that tunnel. God knows what was on there.
Oh wow I do wonder. Certainly a good explore
The sign said 'strictly no admittance' so you shouldn't of entered the tunnel. I am assuming someone gave you permission though.
Hello, yes we had permission from the land owner. Thank you for watching and commenting
