Adventuring into forgotten history, discovering what remains...
My worst video ever.
The Wesel-Datteln Canal built between 1915 and 1931 as the Lippe side canal on the southern slope of the river basin in its lower course. The Lippe was relocated in two places, e.g. in Dorsten. As one of the most important and busiest shipping canals in Germany, the WDK

Dortmund-Ems Canal, important commercial canal in western Germany linking the Ruhr industrial area with the North Sea near Emden. The canal was opened in 1899 and is about 269 km (167 miles) long. It extends from Dortmund, its southern terminus, to meet the Rhine-Herne Canal at Henrichenburg. At that point there is a complex of two boat lifts and two locks, built between 1899 and 1989 to accomm...

We had some canals like that on our Eastern seaboard years ago not hearing Indiana though.
1xs could be the Mason's mark who carved it. You also find them on the ashlar capping stones. They all had thier own individual marks to identify who did what & get paid accordingly
Howdo , following your series on the H & B, don't know if it's my eye's playing trix on me. When you pop out the culvert and explorer dave is filming you what's he sat on, as in below the branch he's sat on. Looks to me like a sleeper, I can see bolt holes & the outline of a chair. The chair looks bigger than normal, makes me think it could've been from a set of points. Sleepers where cut to a standard size but longer for points, especially around the throat area where there would have been wing rails to guide the wheels. Chairs are a standard size unless points / check rails are involved. I know you shot the film 3 years ago but can't help but wonder . Keep up the good work
Hello there. The H&B series was so interesting to film, Dave and I document all the 66 miles of it and we enjoy all the things we find. Yes good point on the sleeper and the chair. I found a longer sleeper further along the route :)
😊👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks Moe :)

Thank You Anthony :)
Hiya teammates 👋🏻👋🏻 You stumble upon the most interesting things 😂 See you soon 👍🏻 🇬🇧🫶🏻🇬🇧
Hello Glenn, Thanks, we really enjoyed our stay in Namur :)
We're going back almost fifty years now, but me and my mates used to ride our trail bikes through that cutting. The sides were so steep that it was almost impossible to scramble up. The bridge across the top still existed then, as did the bridge on Westfield road, where we used to access the trackbed.
Wow I bet that was awesome back then :)
Some years ago me and my daughter walked the tunnel in sandsend near Whitby it was very long with a bend in it but was amazing… and it’s way longer then this one …

Great video guys. Just a suggestion, (albeit a bit late) would it not be wise to wear some PPE in particular hard hats when going into old tunnels?
Yes we should really
I remember those buildings on my Perimeter track runs... Great days 🪂🪂
Looking great mate, very simple idea to connect the car to the motor home, this will be great for the German trip 👍would worry me doing it over a drain though
I sure wouldn't be stripping and building it over a drain either lol. I guess they have spares :) I will go see armitages once a year to keep it serviced. I hope you're well Terry
@ all good here mate, have started putting some vids up on my channel about part time van life
That sounds great Terry :)
A great video, I reckon there's enough salvageable bricks to build a nice house, a pity to see good stuff going to landfill, We used to go to Thornaby airfield, it's all built over now Glats and Shopping Centre but what was conveniently forgotton is the buried ordinance. When ex RAF guys warned about the bombs they were laughed at but they maintained that there is a dump of stuff.
Hello there, I can sure believe that. The amount of kit left behind in bulk sure is surprising. The bricks were in good condition too.
Can you lock the frame to the car?
Yes :)
It’s a great idea dude now you can leave the van on a site and use the up rather than having to move from you’re plot on a campsite etc the up looks lovely mate
Hi Kurt, that’s the plan mate :D
@ best way mate have you still got the truck or ?
So you must have known Ronald Speirs ?
😊 :)
I went to this school 1993-2000…Lizzie Blakey is my name…anyone else???? Was a brilliant school. I recently lost my mum and this video has brought back so many amazing memories like when “ Lolly “ the singer came and performed in the upstairs sports hall. The area outside that sports hall that you said looked like Grange Hill they used to lay a massive pudsey sheet out on that floor and we used to throw our pennies on It to donate to children in need. The walk to school up elm avenue was lovely too! I miss the old days! 😊
Hello there, it’s pleasing to know that you have good memories from the school :)
Squashed Square car 😁🤔😉
Beautiful views
Cooooool! 👍🏻👍🏻 Thanks team for taking us along with you 😃
Hello Glenn you're very welcome :D
Via delorosa means Sorrowful way x
I think I went there when I was 11 😊
Oh wow :D
Shame some of this old line can’t be made in to a proper cycling and walking route
Enjoyed that 👍👏
Glad to hear it :D
Anyone who sees this great video, will have a renewed awe at the brick layers skill.
Great video Andy. Nice to see everyone getting involved. We were chuckling and saying that it was like a busman’s holiday for you 😁
Hello Nick, it certainly was a cool find and we all enjoyed it :D
Wow! I thought this had all been filled for the bypass. I remember walking though the entire tunnel in about 1980....bunking off school! Pronounced Breer-ley by locals.
Hello there, it sure was a mad one to do but we are so glad we completed what was accessible
I remember Ted Caine building a bar in the 1 Sqn block when Mike Farey became CO... I've got a lot to thank Mike Farey for, due to an unavoidable meeting I had with him. He was a multiple thinker and a good mentor. My career took some unexpected paths... Good days
Hello there, thats great information, ill pass this on to Dave :)
A very interesting place, Andy. All of the carbonated water bottling plants we had here in my town when I was a wee lad had their walls tiled up to 2 meters in height. It was fascinating to watch the closest one to home running. It had large windows on the street level and you could look in from outside through the bars. Fully automated hot washing of the bottles, rinsing, cool down and then filling. The capping machine was the furthest away, so I never got a good view of that part of the process. Spotless, squicky clean inox steel everywhere. A thing of beauty. The house up at the end of the ramp must have been quite the thing back in its time. Great mini explore. Hope you all had a lovely holiday, mate. Cheers.
Hello there, from the old photographs i have seen, the factory and house buildings were very nice and the factory was a thriving place. It certainly was a fun place to document and it will be somewhere i would return to in the future :D Sounds interesting the bottling plant you mention. Automation fascinates me
What an impressive site. With a thorough cleanup, it'd be great for some companies. Some of the graffiti was very nice. Paul's - and the skull, especially. Nice to see you all folks going out on an adventure trip. Thomas sure is an inquisitive lad. Keep that spark of curiosity burning, Andy. Glad to see Vicky and Teddy as well. Time for a new AWL shirt: "Trust me, I'm an engineer." Cheers. (I'm catching up with the RUclips playlist after two weeks. Awful sorry for the tsunami of comments!)
Trust me i'm an engineer :D Ill use that quote ha ha I really enjoy reading your comments so no worries there :D Thomas has got me through my darkest days and i owe everything to him. He's a good one indeed. Teddy and Vicky are a great part of the team. We all spend a lot of time together. The holiday was amazing and we have already booked the ferry for the roadtrip 2025 :) I bought a VW Up! yesterday to bring on the roadtrips with us so we can deploy easily from the campsites without the need to take the motorhome out for day trips. The mototrhome is booked to go back to Adi's garage (from Project motorhome first episodes) for further water proofing repairs (leaking window) and to have some other cosmetic work done. The graffiti was great there and gave the emptiness a new lease of life. My friend Jack Silver visited the mineral water factory when the skull was baing painted.
Yeah, it's a bummer. Sometimes, the only way to prevent people from encumbering everyone through stupidity is to seal off the whole place. It's sad to see all the entries concreted, and losing access to what is in fact an archeological site. But, it's understandable. Can't have folks breaking bones or kicking the bucket because of a "Nah. It'll be fiine." attitude and then slipping through a shell hoist without paying attention to the terrain. Or Jean-Luc and Dieudonné collapsing the roof for a Tik-Tok video... There was an old floating drydock at the Buenos Aires Dockyards many years ago. Down on the southernmost part of the harbour, where several hulks rusted away at the time. Locals and visitors used it for fishing and hanging out, even though it was out of bounds and dangerous. Had the chance to go on it and let it pass. Had a few ciggies on the wharf while my mate explored and played chicken with the rusted plating. Accidents happened every now and then. Broken bones, cuts from rusty metal, a properly sauced visitor falling into the water. So much so, it ended up being towed away for scrap when an half-arsed effort was put into cleaning the Riachuelo, the small river that feeds into the harbour. Alas. But I digress. You're professionals at urbex, and can be relied on. Most idiots are either of those. Cheers.
Hello there, I used to work on a floating dry dock back in my navy days up in scotland, it was later replaced by a shiplift in faslane. The Buenos Aires dockyard sounds interesting :D It sure is dangerous, I banged my head yesterday working yesterday with vicky, we were demolishing a building. It was just a small bump but keeps me thinking about safety and how to improve what we do. Thank you for your kind words. We always try to be the best people we can be here at ALW Research Team :D
@@ALWResearchTeam Oh, shiplifts are fascinating. My dad use to be the CTO for the Buenos Aires Casino, eons ago. The casino consists of two ships connected by a giant mezzanine, bow to stern, and several ganways integral to the dock. All of these act as multiple mooring points. Every few years the ships would be towed to the nearby Tandanor shipyard, for hull cleaning, refits and structural assessment. That is one of the few shipyards equipped with a large shiplift in South America These ships have no engines or propulsion whatsoever. My dad was on board one of them when it was taken to the shiplift. It's eight hundred or nine hundred yards away, but it had to be done with the early tide. A swell coming in from the river caught them at 5am and the tugs had to put quite the fight against the heavy wind. They finally made their way into Tandanor around 6am so the shiplift could bring the ship ashore. My dad said there were a couple of times he was sure they'd part a line and hit the docks. Also, Faslane is a legendary place. Cheers.
Wonderful revisit to the Todt battery Andy. Naval ammunition of the time required very specific measures regarding ventilation and preventing moisture build-up. Batterie Todt used a longer-breeched coastal derivative of the 15-incher the Bismarck and Tirpitz were armed with. Propellant casings were widely favoured by the Germans over bags due to the sliding breech design used by Krupp. It's Fez's dayglo pants.Every single time you've been out there and Fez wore them, Gendarmerie showed up. 🤣 Have a fantastic weekend, mate. Cheers. (Edit: The article on Wikipedia about the arrangement of Batterie Todt is excellent. The bloody casemate had an armoured turret in it!)
Hello there, the Todt batteries sure are amazing. We still need to go to the Todt musee that is in one of the casemates. Unfortunately the gun is removed but there is a railway gun there. The Krupp 15" was a amazing feat of engineering indeed. Fez'z cloting choice is certainly not one for a stealth visit anywhere lol.
When The Government has to intervene to tell a government owned company not to do something. 😂
Thats the crazy UK government lol :D
Well done Vicky for putting on a huge smile whenever a camera is pointed on you whilst on your relaxing holiday 😂🫣
Great.....It's great that you made a second part. It's good that you found the water source. 👍👍👍👍
Hallo, thank you Jack :D
