Good exploring, nice vid. Tunnels and mines (Long Horizontals including huge 'black holes', vertical 'chutes') from the engineering 1800's, bore through the mineral rich US Rocky Mountains like Swiss cheese, coastal Ranges of the western 'States', as well as others, countless. A few lives are lost ( large 4x4 years missing with several young bodies, found at bottom of one nearby), Govt seals them off, 'explorers' break through the seals. Our cycles of Adventure continue through the centuries :>)
Burdale tunnel is on the Malton to Driffield branch closed in october 1958, I have walked through several times in the 70s but in 1978 it suffered a roof collapse just over half a mile in from the Burdale end (total lenth is a fraction under 1 mile)the large wooden doors were removed last year and the entrance fully bricked up.
I went in it today but we didn't go too far. Well I didn't, my mates went in a bit further but then we ran out as we heard this weird growling sound. Probably nothing but quite scary...one of my friend's dad went in it as a kid. This tunnel made him believe in ghosts...one of the scariest experiences in his life. The tunnel could be haunted as a man died in it...who knows...
what would they be used for? the railway closed in 1958 or 68. mainly because to many railways were built, so the waste isnt not using them its the fact that they were built at all, although they could maybe be used as road tunnels?
Scarborough (pop. 50,000+) and Whitby (pop. 13,000) are the biggest towns in north-east Yorkshire and nowadays there would be quite sizeable traffic between them if this line was still open. I appreciate that it was difficult to drive trains on this line back in 1950 (steep gradients) but nowadays it would be much easier. I know there isn't the political will but perhaps a diesel tram-train line could be set up at a reduced cost? And with services half-hourly so that loads of people use it?
"I dont think the guy realises there are 5 million candle torches on the market nowadays that light a tunnel up like someone has swithced on a light on the roof!" Yup, that's right, i got proof in my vid a.k.a. a car-headlight-in-a-torch :D P.s. Looks kinda like you discovered a Uranium Seam at 2:20! Great vid & nice music that fits well
well near me ther r/ were 3 railways all running parralell and seperated by about 15 miles, all going north/south, many duplicates of the same route as a result of competition in early private days, its possible to build many routes though just being in right place is the thing.
@Renard380 I think it is Human nature finding a cave, or shelter, to build a place to live. It is scary due to animals that may be in it. Sort of like instinct, kind of how humans are scared of the dark.
at 3.49 there were a lot of orbs or light anomolies. Bet there are plenty of ghosts in them tunnels! some bits looked really scary, I wouldn't go in!! lol Was that bit blocked at where you were filming that small gap about 2.26? How did you get out.
I Bet both those tunnels now have been sealed off so nobody can go inside incase it collapses. The Tunnel North of Bridgnorth is sealed off & Combe Down tunnel is.
@tpvalley You could carry the same argument to roads; alot of roads are duplicate routes- the A1 & M1 as example. Both are always full though as its capacity that's the factor here...
u could thats a good point, but for that to apply the railways would have to full to capacity like the roads and when they were closed they were not used to full capacity, nowhere near, maybe in the future though?
Hey there im wanting to visit this tunnel to see if it would be any good to make a movie. Could someone please msg me with locations on a map on how to find the entrances. Thanks
EXCELLENT VIDEO, been there many times, and even cycled so far into Kettleness. Well done! Cant wait for Woodhead, get it posted!
These things fascinate me, especially the ventilation shafts such as at 03:23 brilliant video, instantly went into my fave list!
Great vid, I am fascinated by these railway tunnels but would never dare go in them, now I don't have to as watching this is good enough for me

why are tunnels both scary and extremely interesting to explore? :D Anyway i love this video, must be the third time i watch it.

This is in the United Kingdom (Britain).
It is on the east coast, in the North of England.
