The guitar he is playing is called the Frankenstrat. He built it from the ground up from the main body of a Stratocaster and bits and pieces of other guitars who's parts he liked. In answer to your question.....it takes literally DECADES of practice to get that good. I myself have been learning to play guitar for the last 6 months and I can barely string 4 chords together. R.I.P Eddie , we miss you.

@@adamknight7904 You hit it on the head..it's all about how a musician connects with you emotionally. With you, it's Gilmour. With a lot of other people it's Eddie. It could also be Beck, Page, Howe..with me it's Luke and Morse. It's entirely subjective.

EVH certainly wasn't just your average speed shredder he did at least reinvent the rule book and created some amazing tones with classical influences, he loved his pentatonics in the same way John Entwistle did with the Bass guitar. Just imagine if those 2 had jammed together! 🤯🤯🤯

@@neillenet291 Im not here to diminish david gilmors skills…or am I. but we are talking about how eddie moved the goal posts when he came out and throughout his career. Tho david had feel in his playing he wasn’t inventing or changing anything, like tapping arpeggios out, clock chime tapping, dive bar tricks, volume swell compositions, full hand slapping, three note per string shredding and much more all with “FEEL” but I think it’s adorable how you can try putting David Gilmour‘s name in the same sentence as Eddie Van Halen’s. No chance. one was black-and-white and one was high def color. And Edward did it all with a smile and made it look simple.

The thing that really makes him special, I believe, is that he is while he is capable of creating all these new and different sounds and tones, he also has a built in musical flow that makes it all come out cool, pretty, emotional, MUSICAL!

Eddie has been voted #1 on many serious music and best guitarist lists. Even if his style isn't your thing, he will still end up in the top 3. He's a guitar god. He did the solo on Michael Jackson's Beat It. The person talking at the beginning was the second vocalist for Van Halen, Sammy Hagar. The entire band are a powerhouse. I think you would enjoy a deep dive of these guys, starting with material from their original line up with David Lee Roth on vocals. For videos, Jump may sound familiar to you and Panama and Hot For Teacher are quintessential Van Halen. Definitely a must. Then you can check out some more "mature" VH with Hagar (known as the Van Hagar days) on vocals. Choose Dreams or Right Now for starters. You cannot go wrong with Van Halen.

I really enjoyed your reaction to this. I am just a few months from turning 59. Most of the technology that we have today wasn’t available when we were growing up. We didn’t have cell phones, PCs, the internet. TV only had 3 channels. We spent most of the day outside. We had to find ways to entertain ourselves. He probably practiced the guitar for hours every day. I enjoy seeing younger people react to the music of our generation. Van Halen was one of many great groups from our time. Thank you for your reaction to this song.

    "Who's that guy?"
The guy at the start was the group's lead vocals at the time, Sammy Hagar.
BTW, the guy on the drums is Eddie's brother, Alex Van Halen...They grew up with music as an integral part of the family, their father being a professional in big band symphony.
You're reaction seemed pretty standard for a first time listener. Your *exact* expressions are individual, for sure, but follow a similar pattern, based on two questions...First it's like "What the hell am I hearing?" & then progresses into "How the hell does he do that?"
    😁
To be fair, Eruption began as Eddie's "finger warmup exercises" that he would play back stage *before* the show (it's originally less than 2 minutes) but they decided to include it on their first full album (simply named "Van Halen"). When he plays it onstage, he mixes in some riffs & sections from other songs the band plays & throws in some improvisation here & there...Every time they do a new show somewhere, his Eruption Solo may not sound exactly like it did in previous shows.
Some have said that the only way Eddie could possible play so fast & keep up that tempo is be making his fingers move faster than the sound barrier. This is because he'd mastered the technique of "finger tapping" in which he plays notes with both hands, with or without using a pick as it suits him.
Others have wondered how he could play for even a few minutes without his fingers turning into bloody stumps. The obvious answer is that he plays & practices so much over years that his calluses have calluses on top of his calluses...Even though I used to play guitar (nowhere near like him), I think my own fingers bleed in sympathy for his so that he doesn't have to.

He shares a list of my personal favorites like Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn and of course Angus Young, whom I can personally thank for the ringing I still have in my ears 30 some odd years later. Note to self: Don't stand too close to the cannons for "For Those About to Rock" at an ACDC concert... just saying.

Sadly, we lost arguably THEEEEE GREATEST ROCK GUITARIST THAT EVER LIVED in October (my now sad birth month) of 2022 to fkn cancer... He was surrounded by his family, his brother Alex, his only child and son, Wolfgang, his current wife, Janine (I believe her name is), AND HIS EX-WIFE, Valerie Bertinelli... He was....... Eddie frkn Van Halen... Never took a guitar lesson in his Life, actually started playing drums before he switched instruments with his brother, Alex, as young kids, and the rest is music history... Excuse me... Music LEGEND!!!
KEEP IN MIND, THIS IS THE GUY WHO TOTALLY REARRANGED MICHAEL JACKSON'S "BEAT IT," at the request of Quincy Jones, to the ICON of a song it became, and still is, today... And, he asked FOR NO MONEY for doing it... Despite the song becoming as universally successful as it became... A genuine artist, who revolutionized modern guitar playing... EVERY GUITARIST AFTER EDDIE was touched by his influence... My "guitar god" MADE ME the guitarist I am today... And, I THANK HIM, and may God rest his soul... RIP EDDIE VAN HALEN (THANK YOU for the timeless hits, bro...) 😪🙏🏾

Who’s the best in contemporary music , that’s the question. There’s a small handful of legendary guitarists who have made a major impact on music because of incredible skill
Eddie Van Halen is one of them
So was Jimmy Hendrix, Jeff Beck , Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan , Joe Satriani, Steve Vai ect ect
That doesn’t include jazz guitarist like
    Alan Holdsworth
    Wes Montgomery
    John McLaughlin
    Pat Metheny
But in contemporary rock he was certainly one of my favorites
