Not 100% sure, but I believe the drummer is Eddie's brother Alex Van Halen.
There's a lot I don't know about the band.
no shit please listen to VH1,2, Women and Children First, and Fair Warning. That’s it except for 1984!!!! Brush up man.
Roto toms sort of
Be 100% sure, u are correct
@@christophermoffett3762 One thing at a time
Watched him in 84 he made the guitar talk it was wow
That is really cool
Not bad for a guy that couldn't read music, the guitar was actually built by him, taking different guitars and putting them together, to get the sound he wanted. He was also the guitar player on Michael Jackson's thriller.
Oh wow that's really cool. I probably won't check out any Michael Jackson on here, but he is the King of Pop for sure
@@AceofBadeReacts
He played the guitar on Beat It
I saw Van Halen open for The Doobie Brothers around 1976. I had heard of them but didn't know much about them. Probably 90% of the fans were there for The Doobie Brothers including me but by the time VH was done I was a fan and sill am today.
That sounds very familiar. There's another reaction I did where the band opened for someone famous and most people were there for the main band and then became a fan of the band I reacted to. I can't think of who it was though
Congratulations, you just fell down the best rabbit hole ever!
haha I hope so
Eddie didn’t just shred, he made the guitar do things nobody had ever heard before….. and that segment in the middle was called “Cathedral”, from their 1982 album Diver Down….he used some echo and some sort of other effect and turned the volume knob up and down to create that sound.
That is the Van Halen hand sign.
Just look up the Van Halen discography and start at the beginning.
awesome
Van Halen is my favorite rock band ever! Eddie is known as one of the greatest guitarists ever, imo i think he is. Eddie also plays piano & keyboard. Another fact Eddie's son Wolfgang Van Halen has his own band called Mammoth WVH in which he is very successful & another fav of mine. On his two albums he plays all of the instruments including the vocals & wrote all of his songs plus he has a touring band when out on the road. You should definitely check out the whole VH & mammoth WVH catalog.
If there's enough requests for it, I will check out more Van Halen and his son as well. I also saw that his son played in Van Halen for a time, as well
The drummer is his (Eddie Van Halen) brother Alex.
Awesome. Thank you. I'll write that down so I don't forget
It's also important to note they traded instruments at a young age. Eddie was the drummer first
@@scotpetri7630 Oh wow. I never heard anything about that
Not only can he not read sheet music but he was also self taught on the guitar.
Now that's talent
Great reaction. I was fortunate enough to have seen VH in 1984 and a couple of more times after that. Saw Both with David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar sing lead. Eddie is the GOAT. That’s his brother Alex at the drums. Incredible!
I’m just an old fart who saw a lot of these bands back in the day. Great memories!
If you haven’t checked out Neil Peart’s drum solos, you’d be just as impressed as you are here.
Rock on! 🤘🏼
The undisputed Goat , even other world famous guitarists say so . His rhythm chops are still untouchable to this very day .
I haven't checked it out yet, but I have checked out a couple of Rush songs. The drum solo is on the list
I was at this concert, live without a net, New Haven ct.. I was 17 I. The middle of that crowd❤❤❤.. king
New HALEN, Connecticut. New HALEN.
That's awesome!
Came to America with his parents after WWII from Holland, on a ship with a piano. He was classically trained as a child, but he never learned to read music. Built his own guitars and equipment because he couldn't afford anything. And had to learn English when they arrived as children,. He arranged the guitar and played for the Michael Jacksons Beat It. Free of charge on his off time. Didn't think anyone would know it was him. There's video of him playing with Michael after the word got out. Check out a video /interview on you tube with him . What it means to be an American. He tells his story. It's great
That's awesome. His story sounds very cool.
Did you know that he was born in Nijmegan in Holland. The family then moved to the USA when Eddie was 3. He also cannot read music. He invented the Floyd Rose locking system. He built his own guitar from parts which he decorated in the stripes by using spray paint & masking tape. And most notably, he invented the Brown Sound which is now seen as a setting on many different amps. As for recommendations, Pleasure Dome; Mine All Mine; 5150; And The Cradle Will Rock; Judgement Day; Atomic Punk; & I'm The One. TBH, I like all of Van Halen's music & that list is just a sample. RIP EVH.
I learned a lot about him from this post. Thank you. I'll add these to the list as well
There were times when he started in the late 70s, he would play with his back to the crowd, so no one could see how he did it. He never used petals or tricks, because he couldn't afford the equipment. He put everything into playing as much as he could to fill the gaps. God given ears for music
I think I might have heard something about that or maybe it was a different guitarist so no one could steal his technique or something.
Alex and Eddie are brothers both were trained with classical piano when they were kids. The father played sax.
That's really cool
Saw them in 82. Bad ass!! Great Share 👍
That is awesome! Thank you
I saw the is solo live in October of ‘86 in Pullman, WA and in ‘88 Monsters of Rock tour. I feel so lucky!
That is awesome you got to see it twice
Awesome reaction!✌🎸🤘👍👍❤❤❤❤
That hand sign is the symbol for the Van Halen stylized "Wings" logo.
oh ok
Alex Van Halen is the drummer so the band is actually named for both of them.
I see. That makes sense
On the floor 4 rows back on the right....both nights.. local radio station had a bus trip........Peace!
You were there?!! Holy smokes! That must've been awesome!
@@Raggmopp-xl7yfLocal radio station in PA had a bus trip....two night show...I was 23 at the time. I suggest watching the entire Live Without a Net concert.... During Sammy's "Where Eagle Fly" everybody was lighting up..whole building smelled like weed....he even commented on it..."Smells good in here!".......Peace!
@@Misitheus The 80s were great, weren't they?!!🤗
That is awesome! It must have been one heck of a show
I'll add the song to the list. If enough people are interested, I can check out the whole concert
Great reaction to this masterpiece. Edward Ludwig VanHalen is the Beethoven, Mozart and Shopan of rock guitar. This is a collage of different pieces of music from 1977-1986 which was the time of this performance. The hand sign represents “the heart of a woman” he!he!he! 😅😅 I’m sure you get that. Anyways I watch reactions to this everyday. It’s gotten to be a morning ritual for me. It gets me going and gets my mind to turning. RIP Edward!
I love hearing stories about all the greats
Van Halen was named after Alex Van Halen the drummer and Eddie Van the guitarist. It was lead singer David Lee Roth that suggested the name. I was at their first tour in 1978 and almost every tour since while throwing in Sammy Hagar to this day. I’ve met everyone except David and all great dudes especially Sammy and Michael Anthony. Probably because I spent more time with the last 2 and actually had longer conversations and a beer.
I also saw them as an opening act. When I went to buy their 1st album I kept looking under "H" b/c I thought Van was the 1st name like Van Morrison. The guy behind the counter finally asked me what I was looking for and that's when I found out it was the band name - and also Alex and Eddie's last name.
That's awesome. I feel like I missed out on a lot of concerts being born in the late 80s
@@AceofBadeReacts Yeah, but you had the Grunge Scene of the 90s and that was the last Great Age of music. But the 70s were pretty good for music. I saw the Cars, Journey and Van Halen all as opening acts before they got famous.
@@Raggmopp-xl7yf yeah but there's only some grunge that I like: Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden. I am not a fan of Nirvana, personally
@@AceofBadeReacts Yeah - I liked Foo Fighter better. Pearl Jam & Cranberries were good. If you want to do a reaction video I'd suggest Metallica 1991 Moscow - it's unreal! 1st western bands allowed in after the fall of the Soviet Union. It's on a military base and they stopped counting after it got to 2.6 million people!
Mean Street is my favorite VH song
I don't think I've ever heard that one
🌸 this is just showing you how extremely masterful and talented eddie was ...💔 miss him so much
There are no words really

Van Halen - Live Without a Net concert. (same concert you're currently watching), not the album version. The live version adds much more to it.
Oh for sure. I have enjoyed watching live performances more than music videos
Awesome reaction! Subbed
Thank you!
Edward Van Halen(R.I.P) changed the way rock guitar was played. All those guitarists that came after him credit their playing styles as starting out by coping him before developing their own style of playing. The Frankinstrat guitar he built was by taking a $50 strat body and chiseled out a slot big enough to hold a humbucker pickup that he took out of a Gibson ES335 guitar. The reason he didn't use effects was because he felt that the effrcts weren't needed because he just did it all with his fingers.
What an unbelievable person he was
No tops Mr Eddie Van Halen period end of story GOAT
Phenomenal shredder
@@AceofBadeReacts your reactions were hilarious cause I'm old and saw this live 9 times every time VH came to Kalamazoo or Detroit or Grand Rapids it was an event in 91 I was in front row in front of EVH it was incredible so seeing ppl that really didn't know their reactions are way funny peace
@@mikejohn4272 haha thanks. Part of it is I'm trying to be entertaining, but I am legitimately having a great time with these reactions and learning about the bands and music
Keep at it and do more Van Halen brother
Psychiatrist: Where did he touch you?
Eddie's guitar: Everywhere Doc, EVERYWHERE!!!
Yeah that's fair
If you think hot for teacher by Van Halen was a killer drum solo, check out Neil Peart solo in Rio You will be in TOTAL AHHHHHHHHH!!!!! you will be thanking me
It is on the list. I just haven't gotten a chance to check it out yet
🌸 the drummer's name is Alex Van Halen and he's Eddie's brother
This is the solo from live without a net concert
The drummer is van Halen brother
Hes nothin' like SRV. ❤❤
Fair. I think I was just thinking of amazing guitarists and that's what came to mind
You can watch this whole concert right here on RUclips. Van Halen Live without a net.
That's pretty cool. If there's enough requests I might just do that
Rumor was Eddie was quite intoxicated during this concert & didn't remember much of the solo at all !
haha that's awesome and a bit sad
This solo was 1986. I was there
Wow that's awesome
If you want shred research Mike Varneys label Shrapnel records or early Malmsteen
Yes, this finger's symbol is from VH fans......R.I.P. Eddie....
Alex Van Halen Eddie’s brother (drummer)
Goat!!!!
Very much so
If you're interested in some serious shredders, here's a short list of a few hot hands:
Craig Goldy
Yngwie Malmsteen
Paul Gilbert
Joe Satriani
Steve Vai
Randy Rhodes
Tina S
There are more, but that's a good start.
Thank you for the list. I have seen Randy Rhodes shred in the Mr. Crowley reaction I did, and Steve Vai and Joe Satriani are on the list, too.
What is your favorite Van Halen song?
Am incredulous by nature but you make mention of the Kinks cover (You really got me) and Hot For Teacher but curiously, you’re unfamiliar with their only #1 biggest hit named Jump. Hope you understand the benign suspicion (mine) 😃
I've heard Jump, just not all the way through. An upbeat melody with dark lyrics
What are they teaching in school….New Haven is in Connecticut.
No clue what they're teaching
We can't hear what you're saying Ace, we just see your mouth moving...LOL
Where at exactly?
@@AceofBadeReacts we can hear you when you stop the video but whilst you're watching the vid and talking/commenting, that's when we can just see your mouth moving with no sound....LOL
@@samanthahawaii oh right. I mean if you want I can talk over the video
@@AceofBadeReacts hahaha...no probs, it's just cool to hear what the viewer is saying within their reaction...but I could kind of lip read most of what you were saying...sort of...LOL
@@samanthahawaii it's just how I react to stuff. I pretty much repeat what I'm saying after I pause, so you aren't missing much
Also check out some Joe Satriani. Made of Tears. Vevo.. And maybe some Steve Vai. Building the church live Jennifer 10101979.. 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸 or Steve Vai.. BAD HORSIE. VEVO.
Awesome. i'll add them to the list
Yet Satriani and Vai both credit Eddie as the gold standard. Ted Nugent tried playing Eddie’s guitar thinking that he’d sound like him and found out otherwise. He also credits Eddie as one of the most influential guitarists.
Dude was married to Valerie Bertinelli
I don't know that I know who that is
Tom Morello is a great guitarist, no question. But Eddie Van Halen was not influenced by him. Eddie was playing professionally for more than a decade before Tom started.
My favorite guitar player ever.
That being said, wait til I introduce you to John Petrucci.
I Don't think I've heard of that person before
@@AceofBadeReacts Guitarist of Dream Theater, and a few other projects.
@@RareHarmony oh ok. I've heard of Dream Theater. Pull Me Under was on Guitar Hero 4. And Mike Portnoy is the drummer who filled in on Avenged Sevenfold's Nightmare album
@@AceofBadeReacts Mike also just reunited with the band! Sweet.
Pull me Under was their only radio hit, but since then they have been number one in the Prog Metal scene without being on mainstream, well anything. Impressive.

Awesome. Thank you
Really LOVE THE REACTION!!! Maybe check out NEIL PEART Buddy Rich HONOR????? or TOP FUEL???!!!!!!!!! :) Surprises awaits!! :) ♥AND, or... Victor Wooten bass music????????? :) LOVE TOP FUEL ALWAYS!!! “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in Him so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” ~ Romans 15:13
I have checked out a number of Rush songs and he is amazing, but I feel like they only showed a part of what he can do
Vanhalen came out 1978 eruption he combining all of his guitar introductions from first album to the 3rd he never invented the tap he masterd it .he never got inspection from your guitar players my opinion.
That's pretty cool
Running with the Devil
That's a song I don't know that I've heard all the way through
Normies
Who?
Ah…you missed the introduction.
If there was an introduction, it wasn't on this specific video
@@AceofBadeReacts
Yes, there are one or two other versions where Sammy Hagar does an introduction that’s worth including.
WtF dude? You don’t even know the song Cathedral? Then you shouldn’t be posting anything about KING EDWARD!
Also, that slapping on the guitar is the beginning of Mean Streets!!! How can you not know this stuff? Listen to VH1,2, Women and Children First, Fair Warning and 1984. That’s everything. That’s about 3 hours is all. Please take the time bro.
Eruption was the only song for Van Halen that was requested, so I went with that. I've heard Hot for Teacher, Jump, and You Really Got Me, a cover of The Kinks. I did react to The Kinks version of that song
Wow...calm down. Not every person in the world knows Van Halen. Usually, the Van Halen community is open and welcoming. Also, you criticized him for not knowing Cathedral, then you don't even include Diver Down on the list of albums he should listen to. 🤦
@@correctlyrics haha it is what it is. I didn't take it personally. I think some people are just really passionate about their favorite artist, and as long as they don't gatekeep music, it's ok.
Alex van halen who is one of the best drummers ever!underrated
I have heard he's on the same level as Neil Peart
