This song is from the Meddle album, it is before everything you've heard so far - 1971. This is the album and the song that they found their Pink Floyd sound. The 'Dark Side of the Moon' would come out 2 years later, and the rest as they say, is history.

The Arena is a protected historical site so the permits and red tape involved must has been a monumental headache, then they had to hand carry all the equipment and electrical setup into the arena, no vehicles allowed. They wanted to play to the ghosts and lost souls so they made it happen.

No band in the world like Pink Floyd, this is 1971 and these guys are in their mid 20's! I've seen Pink Floyd live in 1980, part of their "The Wall" world tour. It was the most incredible, phenomenal live performance I've ever seen in all my 68 years on this planet!
And I've seen most of the great Classic Rock bands of the 1970's, no one is on Floyds level imo, no one!
    Great reaction man.
Here's something for you to check out,... David Gilmour, (PF guitarist and lead singer), live in Gdansk Poland in 2006,... with Pink Floyd keyboardist Rick Wright, playing "Echoes" both parts 1 and 2 consecutively. Incredible live performance! Both Gilmour and Wrigh are in their 50's in 2006.
Sadly, two years later co-founding Pink Floyd (in 1964), band member Rick Wright died of cancer in 2008. here's the link to that performance,...

I first saw this video around 1980. It just appeared on a local channel at 2AM on Sunday morning. The entire clip was played and then the channel signed off. I was blown away. Back then, at least where I lived, it was a mish-mash of programming starting at 1 AM. That slot was usually filled by The Midnight Special or Don Kirshner's Rock Concert. Anything after either was pot luck viewing. The recording and editing of this clip is spectacular.

    You have done well, Justice.
Most young adults would have no idea about Pompeii and Mt Vesuvius.
This was 1971, and they played the whole Meddle Album, not just Echoes.
The soundtrack was released in 1972 and the movie in 1973.
As good as this is live, they continued to get better and add more to their live performces culminating in the 1994 tour now known as PULSE.
You mentioned this is your first live experience of Pink Floyd.......anything from Pulse will leave you speachless.....Comfortably Numb is probably the worlds favourite LIVE performance.

Thanks man! That was my suggestion in my last comments! Glad you liked it! 😀It's actually from the album Meddle, which you haven't reacted yet (I think). It's prior to Dark Side, The Wall and Animals, so a little bit darker and rougher on the edge, but it's in this era where they really experimented before "settling" with their more known style that came with Dark Side of the moon. This session was actually filmed in 1972, and Dark Side of the Moon was released in 1973, so they were in the process of recording it at the time. And btw, like others said, it's only the part 1 of Echoes.
    Cheers from Quebec City!

@@carolricard1903 The acoustic version? Wth are you on about?... Just say you don't like Echoes loll... The original studio version is hands down the best ever, but I suggested Live at Pompeii as a whole with the interviews and Ummagumma tracks as I thought the visual might be interesting to react to. But on second thought, he should probably react to the studio version.

And they were only about the same age as you when they were doing this!
ECHOES from the album Meddle was the great transformation track from really early "experimental 60's" Floyd dominated by Syd to the more commercial David/Roger/Richard/Nick line-up.
Dude you can pick ANY Pulse track BUT I would pick "One Of These Days" also a Meddle track. It's mostly instrumental but letting instruments "sing" is where Pink Floyd shine!

You just reminded me how much I love Meddle the album this is from!! Before Meddle they did an album (the one that got me into Floyd actually) called Atom Heart Mother(no I don't know why nor why the cows lol) There is a long track on that (from memory its called mothers milk?) and you hear in that the birth of Echoes.... Both tracks I love! Not everyone likes Atom but I really do. I saved up the money I earned after school to buy it blind cos of the cows on the album cover ;-) I NEVER regretted it and still have all Floyd albums on vinal oddly I managed to keep the records in mint condition even after all these years. I still think it sounds better, or maybe different, to cds lol. Have subscribed and thank you for reminding me I love this track. Oh Live at Pompeii was also made into an album and video, might be on cd and disc to now.... not sure if you know but Floyd re-did this I think around 2014? They are absolutely as good then as they were all those years ago. Just such a shame 2 have passed now.

The song wasn't over you missed half of it. We had what was called records back in the day. And they had two sides and you had to flip them over. The song actually ends the way it started with a pan out instead of in. You really need to finish the song you missed out on all the spirits that were trapped at Pompeii ascending after the performance centuries. Here's a hint before listening to a song check on how long the song lasts.lol I don't care I've heard the song thousands of times. But you missed out on the experience. Oh well it's your journey. The other thing it wouldn't have happened if you'd listen to Pink Floyd the way it was sort of meant to be there they are called concept albums for a reason picking and choosing songs in the middle of an album is like reading one chapter out of a great novel no context to what you're listening to and you're ruined the plot have a good day and learn
