    txg.ca - Further investigating the true role of the shaft and what influence it has on your ball flight. Learn how shaft characteristics affect your timing and delivery, which in turn can have measurable effects on your ball flight. In this test we use two shafts that are almost identical except for one is designed to launch the ball high and the other low (same weight, flex, manufacturer, materials, etc.)

    Spot on once again! As someone who had never been fitted before I definitely believed that I needed a high launch shaft as I always thought I had a negative AOA and trouble launching the ball. Ironically I found out in my fitting that I'm actually a level to +2 AOA and was fitted into a low launch low spin shaft and I actually hit it a bit higher as the strike point is now much more consistent than it was before. Hopefully people watch this video and learn that nothing is better than a fitting to know what you need. Great job once again gentlemen

    From my experience a shaft can play a bigger role in the launch of a 3 wood than a driver. Do you also find this in your fittings?

    I hate marketers. So you're saying.....get fit. I was fit at modern golf in Vancouver and we decided on the mizuno 850 forged. Because my equipment is majorly adjusted (I'm 6'7") I've learned to order a single trail club, in this case a 6 iron. It felt nothing like the one I was fitted for, no idea why but it was unplayable for me. That's like 2-3 years ago and I'm still looking, I've got a spare 6 iron and 4 spare 7 irons if anyone needs one😩

    Another great video (as always)!! As a suggestion for a new video, do you have a client who might serve as an example for a mid-high handicap female player for a fitting? My wife is an avid golfer in her 50s who is just now starting to grasp what differences in equipment can mean - I've tried to show her your videos, but when she sees Matt hitting 8-iron farther than she hits her driver, she has a hard time relating.. Just a thought.

    Love this video. It once again emphasizes how personal fitting the shaft can be, and just how important it is to get fit. I think a lot of people see you guys and Crossfield to be on opposite sides of the fence for shafts, but videos like this really show how similar your views are. The way you explain using the shaft to help a player time the swing is fantastic.

    Ian, coming back to this wormhole I've gone down in shaft characteristics... In terms of stability and dispersion, would 350 vs 335 tips make a difference with the same torque rating? I would think the 350 tip would play more stable and improve dispersion, maybe even timing.?

    @ian fraser Do you believe that "one day" when we have the technology to actually breakdown a players "timing" to certain data points, just like we can now with path, AOA, speed, etc... That until that day comes AND those new data points have measurable properties that we can transfer into "information". Then and only then could we begin to start the conversation of how we would "fit" a shaft to a "timing profile". I see this as just undeveloped science, where we could grow the analyzation of a player even further. Just like moving away from the lie board and other preconceptions before we had launch monitors.

I also found out exactly what you stress about a shaft not being capable of determining launch and spin alone. What i found out was that a certain shaft profile (heavier weight with an ultra stable tip) produces the best strike location for my swing. Good stuff as always guys.

    Great video guys 👏. Subbed immediately. Can u do a video next where you talk about shaft torque. I've heard opposite explanations by guys in the industry that say 1: torque has an impact on shot disparity during mishits and 2: torque does absolutely nothing except make a driver feel more "boardy"...
    I would imagine that torque (along with other variables, ex: bulge and roll) can somehow interact with horizontal gear effect in either a positive or negative way depending on any swing.. but I would really love a statistical based explanation of what exactly torque does to a swing, all other variables held equal.. if it does anything at all... Thanks in advance if you consider this idea..

    Thanks a lot Ian and Matty for great video...at time 1550, you mentioned a fact that softer shaft left tge face opened for Matt ...thats exactly what I have been experiencing... whenever I went for my good swing (faster) , the faced opened and the ball faded ... but the articles on websites always discouraged me to go for stiffer shaft ...as they claimed that to go for soft shafts with higher torque to cater for fades (snap hooks) ...so much of non sense on websites...
    Now please recommend me some shafts to try which won't let the face opened when i swing fast ...ill be very very grateful

    Great content gentlemen! I'll be honest...you have educated me to the point where I'm disappointed with the average fitter in my area. I'm at the point where I'm contemplating renting 6 shafts or so and going to my local sim and just pick the best performer. If I can dial the head in to get my desired launch; selecting a shaft that feels the best and I time well, without sacrificing ball speeds may just be my best course of action? I recently tried an Atmos Black and was hitting it super solidly centering it almost every swing...Its low launch selling point steered me away? Tensei Orange, Atmos Black and Tour AD IZ are a definite 3 I'll be testing in the next week. Any additional advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • @hannesreinhardt1399
    @hannesreinhardt1399 6 месяцев назад

    Of course, too soft and you can't make it snap through impact - it snaps well past impact. Which leaves the clubface open.
    Too stiff and you can't snap it at all = "boardy". Could also lead to slices.
    Gotta find the shaft that releases just before impact, and that's a road of trial and error. Once you found that shaft, you have to find the matching clubhead to optimize launch and backspin. So that's the route i'd basically go, first find a good shaft and then match it up with a good clubhead.

      @stephenmoxley3004 3 года назад

      @@bryanduchane2371, I'd want to make sure that your fitter is using a launch monitor to determine your swing speed and ball flight. That's probably why they told you your driver was ok. I can also tell you that, if your swing speed is less than 90-95 MPH, you probably don't even need a 3 wood in your bag. Especially an $850 one! Slower swing speeds cannot effectively hit a 3 wood off the deck. I'd also make sure that the fitter is measuring the loft, lie and length of all your clubs, to make sure your gapping is right. That should get you through the basics.

    wishongolf.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/adjustable-hosel-drivers.pdf
    Soooo... I'm a fast swinging high ball hitter. Was given a 9* M5, unfortunately with a high launch/high spin tensei red shaft, which I carry about 250-275 depending on strike and shape. I need to hit the ball lower with less spin, so the best I can do with this driver is put the weight tracks all the way at the front of the head and adjusted the hosel to bring it down to 7* loft. I realize lowering the loft opens the face. But until I came across Tom's article above, I didn't realize just how much it opens the face.
    Apparently for every 1* of loft reduction, there is a 1.8* opening of face angle. So little did I realize when trying to hit the ball lower by lowering the loft, that I was hitting it with a significantly open face. Ok sure, you're supposed to resquare the face before hitting it. But the weight distribution in the head feels different when I do that. Long story short, one day recently I decided to put the loft back to neutral 9* to square the face, and low and behold I'm hitting it way more solid and picked up distance. Mind you, I think I'm finding that I'm a bit less accurate since the square face vs. the open face means my spin numbers are probably lower, which means more side spin/less accuracy as well. I'm pretty accurate as a 2 hdcp though, so at this point I want a solid popping strike vs a glancing blow on a open face.
    My points are....
    a) how much do I need to turn the face to resquare it at impact... even as good as I am, can I consistently resquare it 1.8-3.6*
    b) how does resquaring it affect the weight distribution and feel of the head in the hands
    c) to hit a lower ball that draws more easily, should I lower the loft, which opens the face, which I have to try to resquare, and yet seems to feel a bit differently, (even because of the feel of my hands on a different part of the grip)... or should I increase the loft, which closes the face, which I then either keep closed or resquare to more easily hit a draw with lower spin numbers.
    Funniest thing of all is if you read the above Wishon golf article, it shows that all the supposed loft and face angle changes marketed by the golf companies is more or less a bunch of bullshit. The adjustable hosels don't even produce the changes they say they do! Now that's a real mind fuck folks.
    But one thing is for certain, changing loft/face angle does affect my ball flight and swing. Just have to trial and error out the best set ups.

    Did a fitting yesterday at PGA superstore. Didn't get the Ping or Mizuno like I thought I would because of 2-4 degrees up angle of attack couldn't get spin down. Got 10.5 M5 Taylormade Graphite design Tour IZ 6. But the ball flight is flat at 25 yrds (outside). Teeing the ball up with the 10.5 causes balloon effect. So losing distance in TX wins. What would be good for a better ball flight with maybe a different club besides going to 9.5 degree

    Hi Team TXG massive fan all the way from South Africa and was hoping you could potentially explain what the difference shaft weight would do for the same bend profile. I recently purchased a Ping G410 Plus driver and G410 3 hybrid and both fittings were pretty easy to slot down with the stock Ping Tour 65 Stiff in the driver and the Ping Tour 85 Stiff for the Hybrid. The fairway wood however is posing a bit more of a problem as I did struggle with the Ping Tour 75 Stiff shaft in terms of dispersion which I am sure is also linked to my swing mechanics but was wondering what difference the Ping Tour 65 Stiff shaft would do on the fairway wood compared to the 75.

    I have an iron shaft test in two days. Keeping my Hogan PTx heads but may change the stiff KBS tour V shafts. At least have a look to see if it worth changing. Feels like I cut the ball giving a slight right path too often. I like to swing my clubs with full swing over a softer/smoother swing. Also - my dispersion is erratic - with my full swing.
    Once we have felt and viewed the different shafts we may have a look at length of club (play standard but I am 188 cm, or 6:2ish, as well as have a look at lie.).

    His efficieny was lower than his usual which tells me he was trying to step into it more so than he does In typical playing conditions in order to match ss with the TX flex. It defeats the purpose trying to fit someone or do tests when the player or test subject goes more full out on the swing when it's not they're natural playing swing. I notice this alot with people and as I fitter, the best thing I've learned that has made me a much more accomplished fitter is that you need!, and I mean need! to tell your players or subjects to swing the clubs as if they were on the golf course with the power and feel they are mesmorized to. When I was a youngster and got fitted my swings speeds were 130+ driver and 105+ with my irons and I was swinging the wrong way. When I got my clubs fit and played with them on the course in my natural swing, the clubs felt totally off. I notice this gets tougher with better players because they are able to swing alot faster and maintain similar efficiency without getting told to change. Just my 2 cents

    Am I correct in thinking a stiff tip suits Matt and not a soft tip which seems to me to pliable for him. He has much better control with a harder or stiffer tip methinks. I may be completely wrong. Also Matt himself immediately felt more comfortable with the lower launch version of the shaft. He is an awesome striker of a golf ball. I would appreciate some comments on my thoughts. Once again an absolutely fascinating and great insight into shafts from Ian. Incidentally I would be interested in the difference in torque between the two shafts.

    I did how ever see the tensei orange launch high compared to the blue and spun too high for me when there claim in high launch low spin. Not for me as it spun too high as well.
    The blue was a fantastic flight and perfect numbers for me.

    So, the dynamic loft is higher because the face is open, but those were just the shots blocked left. If you compare shots with the most similar parameters where the face was square at impact with same path, was the peak heights the same? I'm curious what the peak heights are on the similar hit shots. I noticed that the data shown didn't have the peak heights.

    Hi guys I love the content, I’m gaming the st190 with the atmos 6s shaft and it’s performing well but the launch could be lower, with the atmos black 6 and 7 tour being so expensive, what other low launch shafts can be mixed with the Mizuno?

    Excellent video I watch all your videos and they are very informative I also notice if I swing a regular shaft that's too soft I usually push the ball not hook it interesting now I'm kind of understanding why I do much better with a heavier stiffer shaft even though my club head speeds about 103 with a driver but I have a very quick Tempo at the bottom of my swing with my hands I've experimented my whole life to try to find what works heavier and slightly stiffer works better for me my hybrid shafts are 80 gram stiff I hit that much straighter than a 65 gram lighter regular

    Im more and more convinced that shaft fitting should basically just be hit whatever you want, find a couple that feel nice, then check the numbers between the ones that you like the feel of and be done with it.
    I sorta understand now why pros just care about how things feel

    Great stuff as usual, fellas. I can hit most shafts decently after a couple of swings (40+ year groove and moderate swing speed...) BUT when one doesn't work, it is obvious. Most recently the Project X LZ handcrafted... I was prepared for glory and... Nightmare

    hey guys.great info. was wondering if you guys ever come across where someone gets fitted for a specific shaft and stiffness and when the club and shaft come that the feel and the numbers, spin rates and or just over all feel is not close to the club you just demo and bought. how inconsistent are shafts. you demo a stiff and when came its now a softer feel and now its measures a regular. just wondering how accurate you think a mass production of shafts for amateurs are. the club and shaft you demo seems to always be different feel then the one they send. any thoughts thanks jeff

    I play G.D tour ad Di and tested a Tour AD HD and that shaft is definitely low launch.... so consistent .... never hit a driver with shots landing on top of each other... great shaft as always from graphite design.... I will be going back to dial in the driver head to see if I can optimize it for me because it was just so consistent...

    I always thought soft shafts would make you hook until i got fitted into a TS3 fairway with a M4 TZ 6 shaft. I fight a hook and found the way I load the shaft and the timing keeps the face open just that bit longer. I just don't see how anyone can go get something off the shelf after watching your videos. Great great stuff!

  • @tnjbrown
    @tnjbrown 5 лет назад

    Really great information here, and I have had much the same experience. Given that a shaft is really a timing device, can we expect that once you find a shaft you time up well, that it's performance will generally translate well to different heads of various manufacturers, so long as those heads have similar CG qualities and similar head weights? I find that my current Mitsubishi C6 blue works well in any of the Ping SFT heads I've had in my posession (G30, G, G400). Wondering if the C6 would continue to work well for me in other heads of similar CG and weights? Same goes for iron Shafts... Modus 105 Stiff works well for me in the iE1 and i200s, assume it would also translate well into other similar category iron heads?

  • @kevochanner8859
    @kevochanner8859 3 года назад

    Excellent and precise explanation. Which I think also leads into different flex, shaft weight etc. The shaft has to match your swing tempo and how you find that is with a fitting with no preconceived ideas about flex or shaft weight.

    so, just a question from a high handicapper here, why do most people concentrate on the flex of a shaft, and yet NO ONE talks about the torque numbers. I removed the fujikura stiff flex shaft from my taylormade driver (55g, with a torque of 5.0 degrees) and replaced it with a grafalloy prolaunch blue (65g, with a torque of 2.8 degrees) and it instantly made a difference. The shaft is the same flex, 10g heavier, and 2.2 degrees less torque. I am almost certain that the torque is JUST as important as the flex

      GC quad must be broken and giving out errorneous data. 6000 spin on a driver at 115-120 chs would give you like 200yd total distance lol That being said, fairway wood and hybrid shafts are heavier than your driver shaft as a progression, so wouldn’t always need to match stiffness as far as flex went. An 80g stiff could feel stouter than a 70g X Flex trust me (ex club fitter, Long Drive competitor). Get out and experiment with the equipment if you can, that’s always gonna be your best bet
