Life too short for long RUclips videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
In this episode, we’re honoured to get a visit from our good friend, Matt Schofield. Matt is an astonishingly good blues-based player from the UK who we’ve known for many years. These days he spends most of his time in the US, never ceasing to astound fans and audiences with his incredible touch, tone and sophisticated approach to blues guitar.
During this video we ask Matt about his approach to guitar tone, his technique and all that other fun stuff that goes hand-in-hand with it. Matt brought along his pedalboard, his SVL 61 guitar and of course his signature Two-Rock amplifier, leaving us somewhat stunned - there’s some killer playing, but also some really good general advice on tone and approach in this video.
Enjoy the episode!

A NOTE ON NOISE AND HUM…
For this episode, Matt had his Two-Rock at proper gig levels. It is a phenomenal sonic and physical experience (which bizarrely never sounded painful or unpleasant) that’s all part and parcel of his tone.
As a result, there is more hum and extraneous noise than normal (Dan is currently building Matt a new board to help with that, but that’s another story).
The important thing to say is that we use NO hum reduction software or anything of the kind. What you’re hearing is the vocal mic (gained very high to pick up the voices, plus plenty of compression) get faded up and down as Matt speaks. It gives an accentuated impression of the hum, even though it was pretty loud in our little room. When the amp mics are on, we use NO hum reduction, it’s just that the mic on the cab is gained so much lower than our voice mic, so the hum doesn’t seem anywhere near as loud. Hope that makes sense.

This episode will go down in history as absolute reference material. Listen to all these guys, heed the advice on amps and effects that has been given here, and do your best to learn everything Matt is playing just on this video, and you'll have a happy life. Folks, this is everything we need to know. Thanks again Dan and Mick for a stupendous job.
+John Falk Thank you John! We're so pleased that so many people have been moved/affected/inspired by this episode. It means a lot to us that the message is getting across! Thanks for watching, and got the very kind words. :0)
John Falk AB-SO-BLEEDIN-LUTELY!
Learn it all then forget it and find your own sound. We already have a large box full of cookie cutter guitar players parroting each other all day.
"I've never heard a quiet guitar legend!" best quote ever :-))
Micks face when the fuzz comes on... Priceless.
+Tuomas Raatikainen It was biblical.
That Pedal Show yus
Hell yeah!!!!
+Ariel Posen Ariel!
+Ariel Posen It is always good to see you.
Hell hell yeah
Hell to the hizzy yeah.
Yeah Hell!
We need to get John Mayer on That Pedal Show and Anderton's TV!!
Justin L I mean he's also extremely busy with you know the world tour he's on and everything
would really dig that
I just keep coming back to this video as one of my favourites even four years later.
Matt's iTunes bank balance just went up.
I bought all of his albums after listening to his intro jam.
M DA - Matt Schofield Ten From the Road - Live album has some especially mind blowingly great guitar playing. The extended solos on the live version of his song "where do I have to stand" on that album is a total face melter!!
We talked a lot about lead tones and soloists. How about getting Robbie McIntosh on and talk about not being the soloist and how to compliment a toneful lead guitarist. Maybe even see what he uses on the resonator (if anything) and get some tones out of him.
Nothing beats a Strat neck pickup tone.
I think the real magic is in position 4
Matt is incredibly articulate about how he plays. Really enjoyed this conversation, thanks for letting us listen in.
+David Hogeboom Thanks David. There is much enlightenment for those of us who chose to see it. :9)
When Matt speaks about his short career as a session guitarist, his metaphor about not being able to repeat a musical conversation word for word, really (and forgive the pun) struck a chord with me. I always admire players who can repeat a performance with forensic precision but Matt's attitude really nailed something that I have been trying to put into words for years. Well done guys for another magic episode and my thanks and best wishes to Matt. We need more like him.
Get Julian Lage on there :) he plays all vintage Fender stuff, not to mention some of the most amazing playing in the world
Cody Carrig though no pedals. It'd be funny run down, "vintage tele, vintage champ, turn on, play the best guitar on the planet, that's it"
Julian lage trying pedals would make a great show!
I heard that the secret of his tone is a Boss MT-2 tucked inside his vintage Fender amps.
Cody Carrig yes! Get julian to try pedals
Lage uses a Strymon Flint sometimes (only the reverb side I believe).
The reaction to Matt's delay explanation 😂😂😄 I did the same thing. This is why I watch that pedal show
Loved this episode. Matt is such a talented artist and so articulate. Mick and Dan, the perfect hosts.
What a treat that was...such a humble, modest man when he speaks then he touches the guitar and blows your mind.
Have been trying out Mr. Schofields technique for dialing in clean tones on an amp for a few weeks...and spreading the gospel to others. That tip is pure genius!
26:36 this is the very definition of using your ears to dial in a rig. Really cool demonstration
That thing with the amp pots, Colin of CSGuitars did a video a while back explaining how he does the same thing to find a starting point when setting up the EQ on his amps. Makes massive sense once you see someone do it, as I think we all find that no pots ever have a steady change from 1-10, there are always spikes etc.
Wow- Matt Schofield's playing affects me the way SRV did when I heard him for the first time when I was 14-15 years old! Thank the heavens that there are players like Matt that will pour their heart & soul into playing- and let the corporate music machine be damned!
Thanks for bringing this slice of inspiration to us all- so vitally needed.
Cheers!
+Francis Gori Nice one Francis. :0)
I will say it again! Lets walk down the hill........:) Man, I love this....
Me too, Pietro! Really like these "special guest" episodes. Great insight here.
Peter Honoré you so need to do one
Would love too.
Danish Pete in the hooouse!
Mr. Honore deserves a whole entire show on his why and what makes him so versatile as a guitar player!
He's one of the finest blues players of all time. Definitely up there with Robben Ford.
I want to find a girl that looks at me like dan looks at matt Schofield when he's playing
+Danny ripley jr. You mean that doesn't happen all time?
i wanna watch them play hide the germanium transistor.
Danny ripley jr. best comment ever.
Or the way Mick looks at Joey Landreth!
Ive been chuckling all day at that line mate. You just won the internet!
Mighty Matt Schofield! Fenomenal player and a great gentleman, I've sent him once a video message where my 4 years old daughter listening and singing his song anything but time, he responded with very kind words to my message.
Tone for daaaaaaaays! only started watching and its already one of my favourite episodes...
Nice one! Get Philip Sayce on the show sometime.
+Thomas Braam Would LOVE that. Mick here. :0)
Love this show! Great tones this week. Ripping at the end was awesome. Also.... PLEASE get Doyle! Kidnap him if you have to. Tons to cover with his playing and huge board. Fuzzes, Octaves, Vibes, Wah, ODs, Leslie, Delay, Reverb, Amps, Guitars. 2 Hr special that!!!
+Patrick Brown If the clouds/stars aligned that would be soooooo cool. It's about as likely as an earthquake in Swindon. But we'll keep shaking the crater.
I met Matt at a Joe Bonamassa gig. Really really nice humble guy, spoke to us for ages. Good bloke! I'm a real fan of his playing
definitely THE best TPS show so far, thank you guys!
This video was something else! Such a wonderful and educational session with such a great and humble player. Thanks!
+konnektlive Glad you like it! Always plenty to learn from Matt way beyond the notes. :0)
@That Pedal Show, Definitely. I'm playing mostly fusion/Eastern influenced (Persian/Indian) music on electric guitar, which is often different than blues/rock thing, but I still learn a lot by guys such as Matt, and of course you guys! Wonderful channel and it almost became a ritual every week to watch your videos! Cheers!
hah I love the way Mick and Dan are just smiling uncontrollably the entire time, trust me I'd be too if I was next to that!
Watching this video again, after having seen (and loved) so many of your posts, it's so great to see so much footage unedited.
Fantastic, Matt's playing and feel is just from another planet, thank you so much!
Matt is just ridiculously gifted.
daaamn.... (silence)...... dammmn.... (silence again).... daaammn.... (silence. hitting my head.. almost crying.. silence.)... daammn again... just amazing
+Jaime Montiel That's a natural reaction Jamie. :0)
Like making sweet sweet sweeeeet sweet seeeeeet love.....
"What you see is what you get"... LMFAO!!! And wow do I get a lot. Matts articulation, inflections and Dynamics are every bit as fantastic as his phrasing and harmony. Watching him is a clinic on "feeling" every note...
Oh man the subtle difference between the "pull off slide" And a bend. Such powerful expressive playing. Wow
This is gonna come across as a joke, but I'd genuinely love to see an episode on tuner pedals
THIS and headstock tuners compared.
John Lawrie great idea! +1
Yes, we need an episode on how to get good tones out of tuner pedals.
Yes! This is such a big deal. There is no better effect than being in tune. But, of course guitars are inherently out of tune. So a show about being in tune in various situations - especially doubling melodies - would be great.
Yeah! They could compare the accuracy of several.
You gotta get Gilad Hekselman on. Amazing jazz cat with cool pedal tricks.
I follow Matt for years now ! such a talented guitarist, singer and songwriter. Why is he so underrated??? He deserves more credit
+Andreas Linardatos He's only underrated if you you've not heard of him. In fact he's rated extremely highly. More people is what's required! :0)
That Pedal Show In my humble opinion he should be among the 5 best of our age! Thanx for this great video! Keep up the great work! really enjoyed it! Cheers
6:38 i've come back and listened to this part at least 100 times. its everything i want my guitar playing to sound like
Matt SchoField AWESOME !!! Guitarist
53:26, that face when you find the right spot.
I liked what Matt said at 35:37 about using an amp at home. If you've got a good guitar that is responsive and loud unplugged, then there's really no need for an amp.
+Monty Cantsin Me too. Mick here. Thanks for watching!
Great interview guys. It's great to see/hear someone with a serious talent and a story to tell given the oxygen to express what motivates them without constant interruption. Brilliant, thanks for sharing.
Yeah man, LOVE the way Matt plays!
Me too. Hello Shawn - Mick here. Sorry for trying to steal some of your licks man. Too good not too! No doubt Dan has already offered but there’s an open invitation when you’re here in the UK!
Thanks so much Mick! Great to hear from you!
Next, I wanna see Mateus Asato please!!!
+resha hasan It would be a pleasure to have him on the show. :0)
Second that!
Third. That guy is amazing.
Fourth! His control is mega!
In terms of pedals I've mostly seen him with multieffects like H9 or Strymons
Oh wow, I’d never heard of TPS until last month, or Matt Schofield until tonight... now both are/will be a big part of my life. Dan and Mick are simply wonderful hosts - some comments on here bizarrely accuse them of sycophancy, which is plain barking. They’re talking about what they love most with a guy who is simply inspirational in his ability to paint poetry with his guitar, but who’s clearly also humble, immensely personable and a wonderful conversationalist. So much to take from this, really. Best video on RUclips for me. No question. Live. Die. Repeat.
What a breath of fresh air. Matt's perspective and attitude are as refreshing as his playing. Now that I am sufficiently late for work...Thanks fellows.
Friday is always a good day
get him on again! this is mega!
He’ll be coming on with his band when the new record comes out. Niiiiiice!
That Pedal Show nice!! Thats very soon i think!
Well that was everything I hoped it would be! Thanks all, fantastic episode!
What a refreshing down to earth attitude Matt has --- and a great player. Loving this episode.
+Keith Young Yep. Confidence without arrogance. It's a wonderful thing. :0)
I'd love you to get Ed O'Brien on like this. I've seen his pedalboard vids you did with him 'appearing' in it, but never him actually playing, showing his techniques, and talking about how he uses his pedals/loopers/etc to create the textures and sounds he does in a proper TPS style interview kinda way. :)
Piplodocus I could not agree more. That would be awesome!!!
This is the best of the year.
+discipleofec Thank you!
+discipleofec Thank you!
Incredible Blues player..... nothing too far away from the std blues thing but so refreshing at the same time!
One of my favourite vids so far.
Great job guys!! Big fan of Matt for years! Going to watch this over and over and over...
I just learned a ton. Thanks Matt
+Micha-el Cleveland Us too - great isn't it?!?
Great episode guys. Like Dan, the first time I heard Matt's playing was an instant revelation. Some players just have that elusive "it" factor that's magical, and Matt's one of the few that has it in spades. One question: you mention the high volume throughout, but how exactly high was that master turned up? I recently bought a '67 Super Reverb, and when it hits 6 it's game time. Thanks for the great episode!
+Michlandir Ern, pretty much as loud as they would go. 1 o'clock ish? Similar to your Super in terms of where the amp starts working. That's the magic point.
When Dan gets overwhelmed with the sounds in the room you just know it's good.
Thank you so much for this one Dan & Mick, Matt was brilliant! I love watching stunning players just noodle around, I feel I learn so much from them in this context. x
+Phillip Tracey Then we shall endeavour to do more Phillip. Thanks for watching - it's a pleasure doing this stuff!
damn, that sounds righteous
+Oisin McPhillips yep, in the room it was a religious experience
You mean it made you feel delusional? :0P
Maybe he just meant it was unbelievable ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Who said strats sound weak?? Hot damn that thing is an animal of a guitar!
+Brian Fitzpatrick Beasts at volume. Maybe that's why I like playing loud. Mick here. ;0)
That Pedal Show hello
What a great guest! One of my favorite videos from this channel now. Great explanations of his tone and of course the phenomenal playing. Love his style.
Seriously loved this video! Thanks. So much good information, and Matt seems like an incredibly nice, genuine guy. Very cool!
Bit late starting to watch this as I've just seen a video on the Carbon Copy Deluxe!! Love my Carbon Copy but have craved tap tempo and an easy way to play with subdivisions, and low and behold, here it now is! Looking forward to your impressions of it. Now, onto some Matt Schofield goodness!
+Steven G The CCD is going to be phenomenally popular for sure. Have both, obviously. :0)
That Pedal Show Special - Danish Pete??
They finally did.
I could listen to Matt Schofield play all day- wait that's exactly what I often do
Excellent show, really enjoyed Matt being on, what a nice guy, thank you so much for the time and effort you both put in to make such a great show.
mad professor should get smart and do a matt schofield combo pedal, 2 deep blue delay circuits and royal blue overdrive in one box
+Thomas Cordell Wooooo! That would work. We'd buy some. :0)
+Thomas Cordell Wooooo! That would work. We'd buy some. :0)
Thomas Cordell Interesting that MP just came out with a dual blue delay! ;)
I've seen Matt many many times as we live close to eachother.. All do respect to the show, but you have to see Matt live, the sound on this video doesn't translate accurately to the huge beautiful sound Matt has.. Trust me, go see a live show.. And, that tone isn't the gear, Matt sounds like that through anything.. When you achieve the level of playing Matt has reached the tone and touch is in the hands, not the amp, guitar or pedal.. Took me a lot of years and a lot of money on gear to realize that.. Amazing player.. Go check out a show...
+Eddie Parker Dan and I have known Matt for many years, and seen him live many times, but yes, for anyone who hasn't, please do!
It's all in the hands. Hmmm. Much of it is. I can tell you it would sound much less fantastic if he was playing an Ibanez Jem and a Peavey Rage. Not that they're bad, but that Matt doesn't get the full of extent of his voice with those things. So some of it is enabled by the gear. As you rightly point out, that gear may not work for all of us. Thanks for watching!
That's an amazing episode guys. Not just because Matt is my favorite musician but because I love That Pedal Show, I love what you two do and also everyone can learn at least a tiny little bit that's new to them from how Matt sees playing, music, tone etc. And he's got a lovely personnel as well. Great job Dan and Mick! More of similar stuff please. And we'd like to hear Mick's new amp too!
Thank you! This episode has helped me so much!
1. Since I added a master volume to my little 6W Amp and made the tone stack+boost controlable, I't always took some time to find the right settings (Bass, Middle, Treble, Depth and Tone knob all interacting with each other; also Gain, Master Volume and Power Amp valve voltage) - now I find the right settings way quicker.
2. I play piano/organ/keyboard way longer than guitar, but it never came to my mind to solo on the guitar like I do on those or vice versa - so much more possibilities and interesting tones, just by playing a pentatonic on the piano or outlining the e.g F7/Fsus2/Fsus4add6 change that's really easy on piano but I never thought of when playing guitar.
Thanks for making me think about all that.
sorry guys i know a lot of talking, but Mick your playing and style is far more inspiring to me.
+Stephen Fell Keep taking the pills Stephen, but thank you. Thank you kindly sir!
amp modelers will never replace the tube amp.
About tuning the EQ of the amp. One of my uni lecturers taught me this, it was kind of a epiphany moment for me as I’m mostly a blues guy and this really lets me get the most out of the guitar. I’d get into a class, and he’d say the Chet Atkins “tune up boys, it bothers me”. Then one day he asked me if I’d tuned my amp to my guitar, I looked puzzled, he showed me this, world...changed
Thanks for posting this guys! I learned a lot today and it's been one of he most enjoyable episodes for me. Thanks for being on the show Matt!
+Abram Treadwell Cheers Abram, was a lot of fun for Dan and me too!
would love to see this with danish pete
Time Tone Taste! They just cannot be purchased.
I super enjoyed this video. You guys marveled at Matt's playing, but both you guys are right there with him.
+Death By KItty It was a wonderful day. Thanks for the kind words!
Fantastic playing from Matt, he's just a natural talent who's inspiring to both watch and hear. Well done guys for getting him on the show !
+Tex Rex Thank you Tex!
I noticed the tiny terror In the corner. Could you do a video on lunchbox amps ?
+Alex Amos Maybe. What would you like to know about them?
I'd like this too...... please include the VOX MV50. would be good to get views on which take pedals well plus just in general to get some more comparisons of pedals through the home practice amps. oh and make sure you include your D&M drive..... you don't need to sell it to me as order placed with Andertons, just wanna hear you guys play it through a small amp :-)
I'd love to see you jolly two discuss miniature amps from high-end to afforable, and if they're practical versus a small wattage amp
+That Pedal Show Id just like to hear some different opinions on them. Obviously they are much more portable and better for home use , but are they really that good compared to larger 100 watt heads and do they react any differently to pedals and in a good or bad way.
I ran the orange tiny terror at 4ohms into a 4x12 for about 3 rehearsals. sounded good, until it wouldnt work at 4 ohms anymore
Noise is not an issue at all
+Zaid Ali We ask that question part way through......
Loved seeing how Matt dials in amps. Amazing and THANK YOU!
THis have been awesome! Thanx Guys, you always bring new refreshing content and always instructive ones!
Invite Mateus Asato!
I don't agree how sets his tone on his amps - just because pots have a 'sensitive' spot in their taper sweep, doesn't automatically make that a good spot to set your tone. That's just plain ridiculous. I'll have to make a video on how to set your tone on a passive tone stack.
For something that's "plain ridiculous" its remarkably effective. Its not necessarily a function of the pot taper itself as much as it is how the amp behaves moving through the range. This is one of empirical things that just works.
Try it blindfold. Ignore where the dial actually ends up. Follow the instruction and let your ears lead you. It may not take you to where you would normally set your amp but it will very quickly get you to a place which is a solid starting point. Its like a shortcut to a "happy medium" if you will.
Trust me, it's ridiculous. I have studied the tonestacks on Vox amps and if you set the dials in a certain way it will get you into Marshall territory, but this method will not get you anywhere close to that. All it will do is get you into that area that the taper on the pots are making the largest sweep - you may like how your amp sounds set up like that, then again maybe not. No harm in trying it - but I wouldn't too much stock in this method as some magical way to come up with your amp's best tone. The treble and bass knob on passive tone stacks are interactive, change one and you affect the other - so right there that should tell you this method is nonsense, because you'd have to go back and forth and back and forth - because that 'happy' spot you made on the bass will have already drastically changed once you set the treble. A more correct method involves finding that relationship between the treble and bass knobs that gives your amp that mid-range character you are looking for {too much treble is accounted for by rolling back the tone knob on your guitar - or even the volume knob} Once found - you can roll up the mid range without affecting the EQ of either the bass or treble very much, keep it low for home use, roll it up for on-stage boosting and/or cutting through a 'mix' situation, or even further for soloing.
Arguably dependent on the amp then. For example my Epiphone amps have switchable interactive/non-interactive tone. I'm also curious why you as a vox man would want your amps to stray into Marshall territory. Sacrilege surely? :) I would say that the method isn't necessarily aimed at getting the perfect tone. Its a quick way to get an unfamiliar amp into a state where you can build towards an ideal. Who knows? I tried it and liked the result. its another tool in the box.
Why would I want a Vox to sound like a Marshall? Just to be inquisitive - that's all, it doesn't sound so much like a Marshall that you'd think it was an actual marshall - just a hint, but a tonestack isn't the only thing in your amp that is affecting tone - each gain stage with their coupling capacitors and resistors makes their own changes to tone - all the way through the power stage to the actual speaker and combo box it sits in. In the end, Vox, Marshall, etc all had their beginnings from the same amp - small changes from that original design yield very different results i.e. Vox vs. Marshall - large changes that stray too far from that original design yields horrible results. So it's fun for me sometimes to explore the DNA of my Vox amp and see that it's still closely related to that Fender Bassman DNA and Marshall JTM 45 as well - but with a tonestack that more resembles a blackface era amp. But getting back to this way of changing your tone - my philosophy on setting an amp's dials has more to do with finding it's midrange character that complements your set of strings, type of pickups and pickup height - and using this technique I don't think will work towards that end. Not to mention - sometimes if you want your amp to interact with the room acoustics, you have to change the dials - but yet this method would still have you come up with the same positions. So in effect, try this method for kicks - but there is no real logical reason why this should give you a magic tone.
This is not logical. This is bumble bee flight.
And yes I know bee flight is perfectly sound in aerodynamic terms and relies on vortex shedding but its the concept of illogicality we're interested in. There is a certain commonality to many amp designs which in turn springs from the relatively small number of fundamental tube designs. That perhaps is why this as a technique might be applicable to a wide variety of amps as a way to get a good working baseline. There is no suggestion that Matt's tip will give you a perfect tone every time but as several people have already attested it does seem to put you in the ballpark.
In my own case its a 10 year old SoCal 50 sitting on a 20 year old Fender cabinet or an old BC30 fitted with 40 year old Celestions. Elsewhere someone said it worked with a Boss Katana. If he can get a good tone out of one of those with this trick then kudos to him. I've never managed to get any kind of tone out of one.
Best just to take it on faith. Don't overthink it. This is music, not logic.
Fantastic show. I just love Matt's playing. Great tones!
25:13 I've never resonated with a comment so much. Never put Jazz and Blues musicians together on a wedding gig and expect it played straight 😂
Do this with Rabea!
matt D they already have mate, just look back through the catalog
David Martin they have the metal zone video, but not really a video about his board and personal tone
Not gonna lie, I would enjoy that as well. If he used his Kemper... Could be a very interesting video
Southardknives doubt Dan and Mick would let a blasted Kemper through the door
Likely true. Not that I would blame them either. But that's part of what would make it a great video. Challenge the status quo
Bring on Mary Spender, Peter Honoré and Mateus Asato as guests!
So many nuggets of fantastic information interspersed with truly inspirational playing - thank you so much!
IMHO this has been one of the best shows not only of That Pedal Show but any and all guitar oriented shows online, and I know that sounds like hyperbole but I think it's true and for these reasons. Finally ... someone with so much taste and sheer artistry demonstrates important fundamentals of finding "the sweet spot" in all controls, since they all really do have them and when swept you can actually hear it for yourself and how being "on the cusp" affects playing dynamics. Then, as if that wasn't enough, two equally important comments about working the power amp, the actual importance of volume in the air and the failure of Master Volume controls compared to matching the power to the gig, AND how some extremely subtle settings make so much difference only because you can only really notice when it's missing. Awesome show guys. Thank you Matt, Dan and Mick. Superb!
I've just binged a load of Matt Scofield Trio vids and now I've got a permanent filth face. So good!
Just watched this again for everything but particularly Matt's approach to playing chords as the basis of his soloing. Fascinatingly skillful.
I'm exactly the same with playing. It's a conversation and impossible to repeat word for word. It's about how you feel at that split second.
Just amazing! Love your channel!! Thanks for so many great vids! Cheers!
This was a great show. Inspiring and loads of little details here and there, awesome. Thanks!
I've watched this episode 100 times....so awesome.
Thanks guys! Thank you Matt! You are an amazing artist! "It's not a master volume, it's a tone knob" is the quote of the year! Blues players rejoice! It's time to lean into it!
Fantastic guy's, thanks for always bringing us quality content with great integrity and a big dose of inspiration and knowledge. I make small incremental improvements to my live sound from ideas you identify,
many thanks Steve
