In this video we indulge ourselves in some cornerstones of guitar amplification history. It was made possible by one kind TPS viewer, who got in touch to tell us about his collection of vintage beauties… and made them available to borrow!

Dan and I do our best to ask relevant questions and try different things, but to be honest, the whole thing was a bit of a blur. Questions you might have…
Q: Aaaarrgghhh! Why didn’t you try them against new examples?
A: We had too much to get through, but take it as read that these old amps don’t really sound like the modern reissues… plus the old ones can sound very different between examples.
Q: That amp doesn’t sound like mine - it must be broken?
A: Don’t think so… but old amps differ significantly. They’ve been around for decades, repaired and so on. They’re clearly not all the same.
Q: How were the amps mic’d?
A: Our usual combination of Royer/Sontronics ribbons and Neumann condensers on the amps, plus the mid-side pair of AKG C414 XLII in the room.
Q: Is the phasing of Super Reverb and Vibratone off?
A: Sounds like it, doesn’t it? Mick here. I checked it and checked it and checked it. The opposing phase choices were all worse. Something odd was happening - maybe somebody out there knows - but we just went with it anyway. Adding the Bassman in really helped.
Q: Why didn’t you try… //insert all the things we didn’t try here//
A: Sometimes you have to be happy with what you have, rather than sad at what you don’t.

Guys, just want to say thanks so much for letting us experience your joy vicariously, that is so plainly visible throughout the whole video, playing with all these great vintage amps. I'm only a basement noodler with a Vox Valtronix modeling amp and some partscasters, so vids like this mean a lot. lets do 2hr next time :P
The most important thing I've learned from watching That Pedal Show is that two amps is almost always better than one.

I've never really understood the thing about old fender amps until this video. I now understand why Bonamassa ditched the Marshall for the tweed amps

Back in the 90’s I worked in a guitar store in Minneapolis, Minnesota where Z Vex was a regular customer. One day he wanted to show us a prototype pedal he was building called the Fuzz Factory. So after hours he came by and plugged it into an old Marshall Major we had at the time and proceeded to demonstrate what the end of the world might sound like. It was loud, it was fuzzy, and it was glorious.
What Mick was playing at the end reminded me of that day. Thank you!
God! If they would reissue that 1962 Fender Princeton, I would be the first one in line! Thanks for showing us these old vintage amps.

Brownface Fenders are the best! Played a ton at my time at Carter Vintage Guitars, a brownface deluxe with a Les Paul is early ZZ Top all day long. Great episode guys!!

@@brianingram2068 Oh yeah! I've seen that. Brownface Deluxes are so fantastic. I played one that had an more powerful speaker and solid state rectifier and it was immense, it didn't fall apart as bad as the tube rectified ones.
Especially when you have a good speaker in them When they go sometimes a Celestion will work Old K Richards trick w his old Fender amps

Saturday morning in Melbourne Aus. Wife is at work. Sitting down with my 15 month old to watch that pedal show again. My little boy and I are always thoroughly entertained. Hook them young, hook them for life. Cool show boys, bring on the tangents.
Wow, the sound of Dan playing Red through the 65 Super at 42 mins has got to be one of the sweetest sounds I've heard on this show. Kudos for the jazz style, it really suits the sound beautifully

Might be worth a rummage through Johnny's collection again and instead of going for the most noteworthy icons, maybe worth a show to look at some forgotten vintage amp tones. I've been needlessly GASing over Gibson Skylarks and the like. But why look at just vintage Fender, Marshall, Vox when weird and wonderful stuff exists at nowhere near as much money to require selling you body & it's parts. A walk down the back alley of Ampegs, Silvertones, Supros, Gibson amps, etc might be worth a look into.

When Dan plugs his tele in at 27:15 and you can hear the "ghosting" they're talking about in only your right ear and the verb in the left, what an insane sound!

Rewatching. This is my favorite episode. I’d love to see this topic brought back ...maybe a “...five more...” episode. I’m dying to see what y’all could do with an original 1959 Magnatone 213. However, despite that being my amp, I’m kind of obsessed with vintage British amplifiers. I find RUclips lacking enough content exploring the lesser known British amps. Sellers, Simms Watts, Watkins, Sound City, WEM’s, Matamp, etc. I’d be more than happy to one day rewatch THAT episode.

My whole life has been a lie!! I had listened to these videos on my phone/laptop speakers, but today I plugged my Jerry Harvey 13v2's in and now I have to watch them over again!

The Bassman, Super and Vibratone all at once is the sound we as humans don't deserve. That. Was. GOD TIER
YES. This perfectly showcases why I love cranking my Carr Rambler amp.
My amp has a bit more power (the output section is more like a Tweed Pro), but you get that lovely breakup. The spring reverb and bias tremolo both sound their best when those power tubes are overdriving. Just glorious.
This video was too much fun, i have nothing to ask and i'm thinking about selling my house and buying a bunch of vintage amps, i'd be a happy homeless guy... If you're thinking about buying a small amp in this "vintage sounding territory" you should get a Milkman Creamer! Those things are spectacular
PS: To me, the best tones came from the 335, that thing sounds KILLER through these amps
Couldn't agree more. After owning a few vintage amps, I have to be honest I tried a creamer and thought it was the match of more or less any of them. But it's all a matter of personal taste!

I am cyber dothing my cap to you Gents for the quality of the audio. You've captured the sounds from these special amps wonderfully and it was a joy to listen to. Great to see UK designed Sontronics mics on some of the amps too. First time I've seen you use the Orpheus, it's my go to for almost everything, I think it's a seriously underrated mic. When I saw that you guys were doing a vintage amp show I was hoping you guys had a Bassman and sure enough you guys have one. I just got a 59' Bassman reissue and I absolutely love it. Great episode lads!

That rotating speaker is the best vintage/blues guitar sound I've heard on RUclips. Ever.
This episode is a sumptuous treat for a crunchlover's ears. If you guys could re-edit this with a few more floating headers to identify which amps you're playing when, it'd really help us viewers to follow and keep track at a glance of the differences in amp voicing (and the pedal x amp effects). Also looks like maybe your vid title "...Vintage Amps From 1958 - 1966" should be rather "... From 1958 - 1969." ( I suppose that's only if you count the play-out.) But that's all niggling. ++++

Mick and Dan, that is the joy of playing vintage amp! Modern stuff comes close but there is something special about an old Fender or Marshall breaking up that just can’t be beat. The JTM 45 is the reason I fell in love with vintage amps. Give me that amp and a clean boost (or fuzz) and you got rhythm and lead. Need clean? Backup the volume knob. Vintage technology that will forever be the cornerstone of rock!
That Marshall though! That is the stuff of dreams!!

Re: Chris Layton, I met him in the shop i work at when he was touring with Kenny Wayne Shepherd. I asked him to sign a drum head for the wall which he gladly did. He's got that thing about him where even if you hadnt heard of him you could sense he was kind of a big deal, in the nicest way, he was totally modest and assuming but with an aura of "cool"

It really doesn’t help my craving for a 335 though! Maybe 2019 is the year for me.
Am I the only one that could not dig the brownface sound? Other amps all sounding great, but that 1962 Princeton, would sell it the day I got it... But again, great show. And also good to know what not to be diggin' on. On the other hand, that Super Reverb, damned that is a sound!!!!

It sounded all papery and weird. I think it woulf be fun try it with an octave fuzz, but that's about it

I think it’s all about context. I don’t think I’d like it as my main tone, but I can easily imagine loving it in certain songs. Kinda like how some of Muse’s guitar tones can be pretty nasty on their own, but they sound fantastic in the mix (IMHO).
The two Princeton amps in stereo is hands down the best sound I’ve heard from you guys. I wonder if that’s to do with them being easier to record or whether it sounded that good in the room too? It blow my mind and had to rewind. 👍

Ah crap then all the amps that follow are incredible too.
I've got a '63 Princeton and can say that it is the best room sound of any amp I've ever owned. Vintage or modern. I always dismissed the Princeton as a student model amp, but it is no joke. Especially the 6G2 circuit Princeton. The only thing that has come close for me is a 1955 5E4 Super (factory 6V6 power section).
I was never an amp snob . Until when test driving my circa 1940 instrument at the Vintage Guitar dealer , and he randomly plugged me into a Tweed Princeton ! Suddenly I realized what things were supposed to sound like .
Also, the super with the vent and the maxon for the Little Wing intro. Jesus!
You guys make better content than anybody on TV. Love it. Those are some ridiculously good sounds out of those amps. Rock and roll 101.
When I saw this vid’s subject and time tag of 1:02:36, I was so hoping it would be 1 Day, 2 Hours and 36 Minutes long….
Awesome show guys! Those tones with the rotary speaker were some of the best I've heard on TPS. Looking at the guitar-face with the Princeton, I really think you guys would like a good Deluxe Reverb. It's got some of the small amp lovely squishy-ness with more bottom end power. It's a standard for a reason. Many second-hand re-issues that are broken in and looked after sound awesome. My "Q" though is, what exactly is it about vintage amps that make them sound better than re-issues? I mean, we can do point-to-point wiring, we can get the AlNiCo speakers, we can imitate the circuit exactly, but still there's that mojo that seems to be missing. Does something occur to old amps with age as with guitars (which get drier, lighter, and the pick-ups lose magnetic strength)? If so, what, do you think it is?
My guess has always been the transformers. Manufacturers aren’t allowed to make trannies the same way as they used to cos of health and safety regs. Old ones were probably technically much ‘worse’, which perhaps thickens the sound. I could be talking bollocks... but i’ve been through a lot of amps over twenty years.
Only thing about the Deluxes are that they're more ice-picky than the older blackfaces, but dialled down and pedal-driven they can be good.
I disagree with the other reply that manufacturers "aren't allowed" to make new transformers like the old transformers. That said, there is definitely something to 50-60 year old transformers, speakers & cabinet wood that's difficult to replicate. I've built amps since ~2002, and even I've succumbed to buying vintage amps ('62 & '63 Deluxe, '64 Deluxe Reverb, '65 Vibro Champ, '66 Pro Reverb and '67 Super Reverb, along with a '64 Supro Thunderbolt & '51 Supro Spectator, '74 Echoplex & '65 Fender Reverb Unit).
I suspect that as Dan & Mick have found comparing (excellent, modern) pedal versions of rotating speaker, Echoplex & Binson delays, there is just an immediacy when plugging into the old gear where "it's all right there" without any fiddling around. They just "are" the sound you're looking for, without any setup.
@@ewetoo Have to disagree with you there, that's not my experience. They're no more "ice-picky" than a Princeton on the bright channel, and they have a channel without the bright cap. Even on the bright channel, the key thing is for the speaker to have been broken in (and preferably, proper tubes put in). Then, once cranked beyond 6, the they have a glorious crunch, at volumes where the bigger blackfaces are still clean; the treble is not harsh (though it will be new). If you're talking vintage, I'd take a blackface Deluxe over a Princeton any day.
@@CNCTEMATIC A Deluxe Reverb is definitely ice-picky on the Vibrato channel, unless the bright cap has been removed or the Volume of that channel is wound up to 7 or beyond. The bright cap on that channel is 47pF (vs 120pF for other Fender amps), and the smaller value makes the effect more intense (and at a higher range of trebles).
It's certainly more trebly at lower volume than the Princeton Reverb, as the latter has no bright cap. I'll caveat to say my experience has been vintage DR vs vintage PR, so no promises for how modern reissues will sound.
No need to make apologies for the DR, just yank the bright cap out (or make it a larger value, or keep the amp volume cranked right up). I usually work around it on my amp, though I suspect sooner or later I'll take it out.
