my high school chem teacher knew Jello. He got fired though for smoking pot with students. Never heard from him since then. Heard he's teaching down in Mexico now.
Amazing how prophetic these guys were. Not that a lot of people didn't know about systemic and institutionalized social ills, but rather, as a whole, how they hit the nail on the head with so many, and so beautifully. Take their fist great song, maybe the greatest: "Kill the Poor." Nothing could be more powerfully true than this one line: "All systems go to kill the poor tonight." The seething shadow times we live in, now more than ever we can see how the underbelly of the American Dream is not only dead, but may never have existed in the first place (it certainly didn't for minorities), and further, the poor are dying in less obvious ways than being drafted into Vietnam: they die due to no healthcare, they die due to living in unsafe neighborhoods riddled by violence and gangs, they did because they can't afford healthy food, and they die because they work themselves to death. Jagger/Richards, Page/Plant, Lennon/McCartney--all great, brilliant, some geniuses even. But compared to Biafra/East Bay Ray, they come up short--not in terms of talent, influence and writing great songs, but in their unwillingness or inability to relentlessly fight for social justice and holding those in power who kill millions accountable. No band will ever be better at this.

Fucking awesome, all-time classic. And as relevant as it'll always be. One thing great about these DK classics here are the comments that the songs trigger (lol). Biafra sure could nail it back in the day.
This is my interpretation of the song: This song was written after the invention of the neutron bomb, a weapon that really only damages organic matter in the form of radiation. The lyrics "no sense in war but perfect sense at home" alludes to the fact that the weapon really doesn't make sense in the context of war due to the purpose of large weapons being to destroy property and infrastructure in order to cripple the functions of the opposing country. The rest of the song is about the threat of the government using this weapon against it's own poorest and least powerful members of the population. The rich members of society view the poor as a blight and the source of all the nation's problems (they may not openly say it, but it is glaringly obvious in off-hand comments they have made and the general direction of policies supported by them, such as trying to de-fund and destroy welfare programs alluded to in the lyrics through "no more welfare tax to pay" and programs such as government-assisted medical insurance). If the poor could be destroyed in a split second, their belief is that all their problems would be solved. The only obstacle to overcome is the progressives and liberals (and even a lot of them don't really care about the poor), a-la "Jane Fonda on the screen today, convinced the liberals it's okay". The lyrics "unsightly slums gone up in flashing light, the jobless millions whisked away, at last we have more room to play" and "no less value to property, no sense in war but perfect sense at home" simply means that once the poor are gone the world would be a paradise for the rich, able to do whatever they please, to build whatever they want at the expense of the lives of those who have no power to stand up to such actions. So, in summary, this song is satire highlighting the fact that the rich members of society don't give a damn about the poorer, less affluent citizens and that they would be perfectly happy if somehow the poor could just disappear without any consequences. It is written from the perspective of the rich which is why so many people are confused by this song and find it disgusting when in reality, the band is completely against "killing the poor". TL;DR - Do not take the song at face value. It is satire. The Dead Kennedys are completely against "killing the poor". The song is written from the perspective of the rich which is why many people find it confusing. It is about the fear that the neutron bomb could be used by the rich and the government against the poor citizens of the nation with no real lasting consequences. I guess many people find the concept of satire a little hard to grasp.
To add something: The Neutron Bomb is by far not only against organic matter, it was developed to reduce the fallout but they managed only to get it the third of an "usual" bomb. The exact opposite of this would be the Cobalt Bomb.

Denver has become a shithole since colorado went from purple to blue. Liberals a la “holiday in Cambodia” everywhere.
40 years later and still nobody has killed the poor. Sad.
Bruh the song is literally sarcasm lol
This just makes me chuckle and get nostalgic for the 80's. And as I've always said; DAMN THESE GUYS CAN PLAY!
We all thought this was insane when we heard it for the first time......
absolutely not. it's been going for years in different countries including our own.
I was talking about when it was released in the late '70s......
Robin Shields 1980 to be exact.
We called people like you anoraks. My friend's copy of 'Fresh fruit and rotting Vegetables' still had the band's faces on the back....
no, I thought it was the best thing I had ever heard.
The anthem of the GOP and corporate Democrats.
Before their time classic raw music blessd to hear them
Official anthem of Trickle-Down Economics and the corporate welfare system.
Canada be like…
i love this metallic insane voice!
you can turn kill the poor into kill Tipper Gore.... We know Jello loved Tipper
The Republican National Committee theme song 😊
Well, according to the US Census Bureau, California has the second highest Supplemental Poverty rate in the US. Right after Mississippi. As of the date of this post CA also has the 2nd highest unemployment rate in the US. And CA is definitely not a GOP state.

All rise for the Canadian national anthem
My metals friends thought they were saying " kill, kill, kill Capone"...lmao!
Greatest band I have ever seen and that was in the early 80s.
The anthem of the GOP, DNC, Tories, and really, any right-leaning party.
@@lindseymckirdy1830 where you found information that Stalin killed 20 million people?
@@lindseymckirdy1830 even 5 million is complete nonsense. especially as a result of which these 5 million people were killed?

@@user-ne8th6vp5q wasn't Stalin a conservative, anti abortion and anti homossexuality? I can't see a bit of marxism in his figure, only an autocrat. Trump would love him personally, more than he loves Putin and Kim Jong-un.
@@5driedgrams then even Western countries were against abortion and homosexuality. the ban on abortion was necessary in order not to lose population growth. why is he a conservative? Explain this moment in more detail please. Who, then, do you think are the real Marxists?
this may become the GOP's theme song
Actually, not. The "GOP" freed the slaves, the libs have been extremely efficient at re-enslaving them. 'Tis a fact. Undeniable. Unless your history book was from Hackensack, rewritten in the 90s.
Dems offer "help", now easily obtained and no need for seeking a job. It was originally designed to help those in true need.
GOP- jobs, self sufficiency, work your way up no matter who you are.
But- you just keep sucking down your un-Kool - Aid my friend.
Lemming u b.
veronica Alleyne No. You're displaying the kneejerk reaction. It's ok to need and be assisted. Another to not expend the effort to help ones' self. You are clueless as to whom you conversing with. I've been up. I've been down. But, the path of least resistance seems to be the pattern today.
I'll tell you what - let us debate on video. Seriously. I'm 58, have seen it all, and simply proffer my view based upon experience as opposed to political view.
If you're up for it - simply reply.
No offense intended but you're in for a thrashing should you come to this battle with arguments and debatable points based upon idealistic excretion as opposed to life experience.
Seriously. My view- help all, all in true need. The rest, don't coddle or you create an entire caste of hopelessness.
Your move.
***** by the tone of your initial remark it seemed as if you'd made an assumption & last I checked no one left you HNIC of who deserves what & just like you point out that I don't know your story you don't also don't know everybody else's

Mike Dunn I don't associate with conservative scum, that's what it's like, c'ya hate ta b'ya
