This reminds me, I have an ancestor who was born in I think 1554 somewhere in France, who very much lived the life of a seafarer, and he died in 1654 somewhere in Acadia.
This proves the superiority of a seafaring lifestyle over that of a landlubber's, as a _frenchman_ born in the mid _1500's_ managed to live to the age of 100, clearly because of the enrichment that life as a sailor provided to his health.
Some history:
Starboard is derived from "steer board" back in the days when ships where steered by a paddle placed on one side of the ship. Since most people where right handed, the steerboard/starboard was the right side of the ship. Since you have a paddle on one side you naturally dock to ports on the other side. So thus the port side is on the left. This is how I remember it.
