Thanks everyone! If you want more specific drills for those critical base mechanics, you can check out my Ultimate Training Guide: ruclips.net/video/U5VXmGx9ou0/видео.html Edit: Some of you are asking about fast/quick aerials. I actually didn't include those because at this point I consider them to be as fundemental and basic as the aerial itself (which is reflective of how far the playerbase has some). Fast aerials are super critical in becoming faster/more effeciant at the game!
Hello Mr Khan. I think your videos are great! However, every time you put text on the screen and blur the video in the background, I find myself trying to watch the blurred video instead of reading the text and my eyes start hurting because I'm trying to focus on the out-of-focus video. Maybe I'm the only person this happens to? Either way, I think it would be great if you didn't do that... or maybe if the video was just darker or more blurred so it's not so tempting to try to keep watching the gameplay.
People would be surprised at how much of their slow reaction time is purely just because they aren't watching the other cars. Reading where they are about to hit it before they do is huge in playing faster
The best advice I ever got from anyone on how to improve my gameplay on RL was actually from a toxic opponent. He told me to "get gud kid" and it all made sense after that.
NumberOneJake no such thing as stuck your just holding yourself back. I went from bronze to champ in 5 months. All I did was went into freeplay all the time whenever I woke up and hit the ball around for a long time. Another thing is when you see a crazy shot I dont say omg thats insane I go into freeplay and learn the mechanic. That mindset got me and my friend champ
The Bud Knight what Ben said. You pretty much just have to discipline yourself to train. Haha most important play for fun but if you want to rank up fast then you have to train. The biggest thing for me was learning aerial car control by just spinning and all that in the air.
@Ben Schwartz Well you’d be surprised to see my mechanics for being a plat, just yesterday I scored an air dribble which I’ve never seen anyone else do in plat, I think I just gotta work better with my teammate sometimes we’re just not on the same page
@@maxitaxi6484 go free play and just dribble the ball then start the match since golds tends to give the ball away but since u practice dribbling u will have the advantage and u should get plat under 2 weeks
Notice none of these skills are about the petty points you used to earn toward leveling up (like epic saves etc). You can save a ball from way out in front of your net and not see a credit to your name. There are so many things that don't involve scoring goals, making assists, saving and making shots that are critical to the game. Some toxic players will point to the scoreboard and say, "You're getting carried," when you're providing the foundation needed to make the game successful. It's not a 1v2.
But the thing is Psyonix deleted many points that you receive ingame for example shot on goal was worth 30 points. Now it is worth 10 points. The first touch at a kickoff is now worth 0 points. I haven't really seen all of the reduces, because I am not playing the game that much anymore, but thats a thing I really am salty about, because many points I made were not from goals, but from these "tiny" things you contribute, like a good kickoff or a good pass in front of the goal and now it feels like you get 0 reward. I know some games I just dont hit the goal and it is just super annoying so I try to make the right pass but when I dont even get points for that it just feels like I did nothing and then I play like that because it pulls me down.
This is one of the best reason why people don't play in team, because they just want to be the MVP and they don't care about Teamplay and really win the match.
I dont really care about MVP, but winning a game with like 100 points while your teammate has 400 just sucks, because I dont get any points for what I am contributing and then the "you get carried lol lol you are so bad" flamers really piss me off because I have no real "evidence" to prove them wrong.
Yeah they're absolutely meaningless. I don't even get why there is a score in the first place. I got zero points a couple days ago in a plat 3 match because both (random) guys on my team always cut their rotations in half, right in front of me, and they would also both chase the ball across the opponents net forcing me to turn around and hang back at midfield. When I did eventually go for challenges and neither one of them rotated back in time, and we got scored on I got spammed with "Defending..." "Wow!" etc.. And apparently everyone in the lobby thought it was hilarious that I got zero points. It was such a struggle being forced out of position by teammates and trying to find a proper position when both guys would never rotate behind me. On top of all this. Neither one of my teammates called their kickoffs, causing both of them to go for corner boosts on a kickoff while I was behind them AND the more toxic of the two even turned around on one of his solo diagonal kickoffs to get the corner boost. He just boosted and turned in field, making a 200+ dergee turn on the ground to get the boost and then spammed "What a save!" at me when I didn't save the opponents shot. Told them after the game to go and have a look at the replay and count the times they cut me off or chased the ball across the field when they should have been going back and got greeted with a "lol you suck dude". gg
I'd also like to point out how useful it can be to bump opposing players when its convenient to do so. It has proved invaluable to me countless times for my or my teammate's goal.
Funny thing is, bumping others has its usefulness peak around diamond ranks because they're good enough to save most direct shots yet they're not super aware of the other 5 cars on the field. Before this rank you can score a lot of goals even if there's a defender in the net, and after that players just know where you are and what are your intentions so they'll often just move away from the bump or start their aerial sooner. Perfect tip for people in the high plat / diamond range
Bit of a 'catch-all' but that kinda falls into "Decision making". Knowing when to go for a bump/demo to do it effectively so you're not wasting time, boost, or just leaving yourself massively out of position for little to no gain, is definitely a very useful skill though.
As a GC, I recommend this video. The decision making and the positioning are the key in this game. I've beaten quite a few RLRS and RLCS players now while being in the mid 1500mmr by applying the tips in this video.
I highly doubt you as a 1500 mmr beating a pro in this game. Maybe if he had a really bad day or was tilted or was under any negative influence, there is no way you can win like that
Stitch when he says he beats pros at that MMR doesnt mean they have their whole team with them. If it was the whole team they would be destroyed. Their is a certain click pros have with their tm8s. Ive seen it happen many times. Now this doesnt mean its easy. Just different
It's also important to remember that he isn't saying he consistantly beats pros, but beating pros who are soloqueueing 3s every once in a while is something most GCs can do
True! I played against Deevo and Kuxir a couple of times and was on the winning end. They don't play the same when they are soloqueuing. You can definitely beat them with the 5 mechanics shown in the video! :)
Go into free play for a few minutes every time you turn the game on and force yourself to land on the wall and jump from the wall at all sorts of angles at full speed. Learn to air roll your car to land flat and just go at it every day. It took me a week to get it down to where I can be ~60% effective on the wall.
@@viggovanmalsen638 You're the exact type of player Sunless talks about. "MY TEAMMATES DRAG ME DOWN. I'M LOWER RANK BUT BETTER THAN THEM AND THEY'RE HIGHER RANK." If you're anything lower than Champ, you're trash. It's the hard truth. I'm part of that trash, being hardstuck Diamond 1-2. I'm improving everyday, and the fact that i'm in Diamond with only 200hrs of play is quite nice. Anyway, you stink at the game and your mentality is stinkier than your gameplay. Enjoy being Plat max for life with that attitude.
Trust me, positioning ALONE can get you to Plat. Before I made the switch to actually grinding workshops and free play to actually improve, I was Plat with only positioning and a little bit of aerials. ANYONE can get Plat because Plat is honestly.. really bad. The difference between Plat 3 and Diamond 3 is gigantic.
I disagree, recoveries are what makes you a faster player, and 3s is where speed is the most important. Recovering faster means challenging the ball earlier, getting in defense faster, and overall spending less time idle just flopping around waiting for your car to get on it's 4 wheels !
I get back into this game every few months and get to diamond 3v3 randoms mainly with just my positional sense. I can do some basic aerials but I'm slow and cumbersome af at it compared to people who know what they're doing. I find a lot of players at this level think they're good at doing the fancy stuff, and some of them are. But most of them have huge holes in their game when it comes to defensive sense and reacting to what others are doing. My skill set actually complements those players on my team quite nicely which might explain my decent rank despite not being very good technically. The funniest thing at this level are players who think it's 1v1 and exclusively try to dribble the ball up the wall and fly it into the goal, which is probably the only thing they've spent time practicing. Obviously anyone with any awareness can see this coming a mile away and either intercept mid air or simply wait in the goal for them to give the ball to you so you can counter attack.
I completely agree with this. I am sort of new to the game but I have been finding that these players with fancy moves can be very easy to counter. I noticed very samey type of tactics with a lot of these teams. My tactics sound similar to yours, though I tend to always be very conservative with my boost for those ever important counters.
me and my friend are c1 in 3x3. Now we are both "trash" in a sense we can miss some stupid easy balls. Its weird, feels like we dont deserve c1. But then if we look how others play, they are same "trash" as we are. Funny how it works.
@RobosergTV It's good to see someone who actually knows exactly where they stand. It's because C1 is not that high a rank, but it's still a tiny enough portion of the whole player base to be considered a decent achievement (which it is really, it needs a decent amount of practice and learning). But, playing it more and getting better is very rewarding, keep it up bro!
Half of the “we’re trash” comments come from the Dunning Kruger effect. Essentially as knowledge about something goes up. Confidence goes down. Look it up, it’s fascinating.
this video was honestly such an encouragement for me . I have found being a low level RL player hard to deal with, but this video made the grind journey seem more manageable/attainable. Thank you Sunless
@@brettcoyle2399 Best advice I can give you is hug the back post. If the play is going on on the right and you have teammates on that side, stay left without going past the goalpost on your side. If your teammates interrupt the play you're in position in the middle for any sort of pass play, if your teammates get beat you're in a position to block anything towards the net.
@@HeyRoosty I hear that advice a lot and I honestly don't find it very helpful, at least not without further explanation. If you're literally standing still at back post, then no, you're not in a position to block anything towards the net, you will not reach those near post shots. I'm not saying you shouldn't rotate to back post, you certainly should, and you certainly can and should use your rotating momentum to make saves from there, but you do need that momentum to reach a near post shot, which means it's all about being back post _at the right time_ and reading your opponent's attack. If you're at the back post too soon and have to wait for the attack, it's better to go in goal and face outwards.
think about how much better your basic car control is now than 200 hours ago though, freestyling as a specific skill isn't useful, but the car control training you get from freestyling is invaluable
I beat a freestyling smurfer in silver who said he had an account in diamonds, so he stays asking me to not play and just watch his tricks, as I said “nah dude, I want to fight you even if I loose miserably” and then I just went full try hard sweaty position tactic mode and managed to beat him by one goal in the last 10 seconds of game (I somehow saved and blocked most of his airdribbly steroids diamond stuff with just basic mechanics” and after that the guy was so damn mad I was like “hey dude gg, that was really hard” (I really meant it that match was damn hard and I was glad I overcame such challenge) and he started you know... “STFU cunt” “you need to die” and a lot of other lovely gems of comedy.
Also as the guy in the top said car control it’s a really good skill you get by freestyling mix that with good positioning and you’ll be one hell of a player.
Hey Sunless, I just wanted to say that I haven't played Rocket League in probably about a year but I got recommended one of your videos and now I can't stop watching them. Your video making skills are seriously on point - extremely addictive!
On the topic of reaction time: Reaction comes through repetition, when you do something enough times (over and over and over) it becomes instinctual. So while “training reaction time” isn’t REALLY a thing, you can still increase your reaction speed through that repetition of simple tasks. It’s why, no matter the sport or activity, fundamentals are so key. When you’ve mastered the fundamentals, you can master the advanced.
Also a lot of people need to keep in mind that many of the decisions you see high level players making is a lot less about reaction and more about planning ahead. Just what you said, practicing over and over. Seeing the same things so many times, they can start to prepare for certain decisions before the time comes to make them.
Some others that should have been mentioned, despite that it could fall in the decision making category are clears, passes, reading bounces, and recovery (though you did mention wave dashing). Clearing is very important, it's not just hitting the ball really hard. It needs to be done in a precise manner that it saves your team time and makes the other team have a hard time getting any momentum off of it. Lot's of people don't do this properly, hence why i think it should be mentioned. Also, some people will still hit the ball at the opponent when they are challenging the clear. Instead of going for a hard hit directly at your opponent setting up a dunk. If you have the time, just hit it to the side. It really goes a long way. This will happen a lot in lower ranks, and it really will improve your rank if you are struggling diamond or below. knowing when to pass, when to shoot, or when to hit the cross bar is very important. When someone can defend your ball, it's obvious you shouldn't try score unless you think you can make it or they will have a bad clear. Reading bounces (or the player themselves) will make up for bad reaction time. If you can read a bounce before the opponent can, that'll make you 100x faster than them. Learning to read bounces before others can is hard but it's an essential skill. Recovery time is something a lot of low ranks really really fall bad on compared to the higher ranks. And i'm surprised it wasn't mentioned in this as a key requirement. Recovery time itself will save people from tons of goals and horrible situations. Most of these will make you play faster, and thats why when you rank up, you see people who play really fast compared to someone who potentially could have TONS "better" mechanical skill but plays slower. These are the mechanical skills that go unnoticed because it's not fancy. I'm roughly the same shit rank as sunless khan. But i'm pretty horrible at mechanics. I miss a lot of shots, and I do some really horrible plays that questions my rank. but majority of the time it's cuz I play smarter, clear better (sometimes at least), challenge better, and recognize 1v2 situations and how to deal with it better than some players with better mechanical skills. Like reading passes and positioning for the save and what not. Things I really need to work on is better recovery and reading corner bounces better. It get's me still at this rank. as well as consistency with shooting. I miss more than I should at this rank. way more... :(
You can probably fix Ur missing With And adjustment to your camera settings And controller deadzone settings. I made some tweaks after 1500 hours And went fast from c1 to c3 in 3s And 2s.
@@fritidjoffen After changing my controller deadzone from .3 to .1 I can confirm doing this helped me exponentially after getting use to it at least which took me a long time. At first i played way worse, but the response time was hella faster. Which made playing and reacting easier. So thanks a lot for this advice. It helped!
The player I like to reference is Karma. Last season in the Rival series, I saw a couple of her games and she played like the fucking Hulk. She wasn't doing anything crazy, Just slamming the ball, slamming her opponents, getting in the right position and doing it all as quickly as possible without being out of control. Controlled chaos, I suppose. Also as they say, the best offence is a good defence. If your opponents can't score, they can't win.
This should be common sense, yet i get constantly flamed at my rank ( high dia 3 - mid champ 1), i am playing in champ most of the time yet i am so mechanically bad that i never reached diamond in 1s and i get shit on in plat. Anyone who ever watched football (soccer) knows that you can be a pro player and not actually be technically gifted or even technically good and.
Yeah you just need to pass consistently, shoot consistently throughout the whole match without letting fatigue get to you as football is a fluid sport requiring different things at different times.
THANK. YOU. I'm stuck in D3 in 2's because players in this rank, for the most part, are so caught up in fancy mechanical plays instead of reading the defense and seeing where your teammate is etc.
i would say a monumental thing is shot placement, once you get in the upper diamond area it is so advantageous to be able to put the ball in a specific spot in the net, on the backboard, or to your teammates when trying to put points on the board.
I got to say this contained a really helpfull tipp for me, which is on defense, when when I am driving in the same direction as the ball is going, I never turn around and powerclear the ball. I think that is because I did a lot of Trainingpacks with me defending far outside the goal, where saving is everything, but not initiating a counter-attack. I hope implementing this will help me rank up.
It definitely will. I use to be stuck at diamond 3 for like 3 seasons.Someone pointed this out to me, that I never turn around with power slide to hit it, when i'm directly behind it. I always tried to run back save the ball from the hit or do something weird and stupid. It's cuz I was REALLY bad at power sliding and I always fked it up. So I started just practicing power sliding. it really made a huge dif in my gameplay. especially with dribbling.
Yea I definitely agree that powerslide plays a big role in many things, gaining overall speed, recovery and agility in your groundplay. It makes you simply so much more agile that anyone interested in getting better should spend at least 5-10 minutes just powersliding and turning around in different ways every day for a few days. You will notice a difference!
Hi SunlessKhan, i play trackmania since 2007(im 39 btw), by my other clan members(+lockdown period) i got into RL since may2020, just saying that i love your youtube content you created for all these years, helping ppl enjoying the gaming society, keep up the good work. Wish you all the best on your future projects ! Cheers!
I am always completely stunned seeing pros play this game. They just always know where the ball is going and make crazy shots, while i am happy if i even hit the ball. It makes me proud when i hit the ball, even if it flys in the completely wrong direction.
Sunless something that helps me react faster is going in and doing a 4v1 against allstar bots. but having the matches play in slow motion. I'm not too big on trying to practice stuff in free play over and over again. I do find that playing against the bots helps me when it slow mo. I can get my shots down better and when the game is on reg speed i find myself reacting faster. This does not help learn how to defend against things like flip reset ceiling shots or anything like that. However, I just learned to watch the ball in game instead of the car. Thats a skill I learned from playing basketball and american football as a kid and teen. If you watch your opponent instead of the ball 8/10 they are going to cross you up in some way shape or form. However, if you keep your eyes on the ball you wont be distracted by what their body is doing and vastly improving your defense. Crossover goes from a 8/10 to more like a 2-4/10. Thats just my opinion. I'm currently between Diamond 3 and champ 1. I keep falling between the two. I can say that I can't do really any high level plays. I can't even flick properly. However, my defense is pretty good. So even though I may not be able to flick very well, I can defend against most flicks and other high level shots. As they say in American football, defense wins games.
@@SartorialisticSavage65 it literally takes like 10mins to complete each match, but the results are worth it. I went from being stuck in plat2 to fighting between diamond3 and champ1 it is well worth it.
I know this is an old video at this point, but I think that reaction time is one of the things you need the least in this game. And instead of that, I think it mainly comes down to decision making, which includes rotation and positioning and field awareness. If you’re skilled at paying attention to what’s happening on the field (the ball, the ball’s attackers, and your teammates and opponents that are rotating) and if you have good positioning, then you hardly need to react to anything. You know when the ball is going to be cleared hard or a shot is coming at your net or when an opposing passing play is being set up, so you can prepare for those things without having to react quickly when they do. I would confidently say that, because I pay a lot of attention to the field and not just the ball, there’s not much I have to react to besides passing plays from both my teammates and my opponents.
This is a great video. I would recommend getting better at them by keeping them in mind, and when you know you failed or could’ve done better save the replay. Rewatch your replays and know exactly what you did that you can do differently next time. This helped me climb very fast.
So I noticed In your video you said you we met sure how to get better at just hitting the ball. And honestly what's helped me is learning good car control as well as a little game mechanics like what parts of the ball you need to hit with what part of your car to make it go the direction and the speed that you want.
Your really good at eliminating airtime. You always land on your wheels no matter on the wall or ground. I always get stuck in the opponents goal or end up floating too long.
I completely agree. I regularly hit ceiling shots flip resets air dribbles. Double touches. And I’m champ 2. I regularly lose games. Because I’m missing some of the core values. Spent a lot of time in free play working on mechanics. But it’s how I enjoy the game. And by regularly I mean a couple cool goals every day that I play. Not every game.
For y'all that don't believe this, just watch Scrub Killa play 1s. He barely does any flicks, and the only ones he does are diagonal and front flicks. His entire game is based on defense, boost management, and being. And now he's one of the best players in the world.
literally every match with in silver 2-gold 1 is a hell hole of people making new accounts, people switching consoles, trolls, and boosters. literally pulling my hair out being in a silvers match with the other team playing like the harlem globe trotters and ariel every shot and not missing anything. i mean in 3v3 i climbed to gold but goddamn like climbing everest every dam match against these people. am i the only one that notices this bullshit. literally ruins the game and is really unplayable unless i get lucky and face someone equal to me. i mean i can land ariels and dribble a bit but dam these dudes flying crazy style
In my opinion, one thing that really, really separates say a champ 1 from a GC is trust. No one trusts their team mates, and when someone goofs up there's usually a dude that feels like he needs to over compensate and it throws off the chemistry. Trusting each other is super underrated in this game. Focus on giving people space and being supportive when you have a team mate that goofs.
ChubTheMaster I’m diamond and I often « reverse toward goals ». It’s quicker than rotating 180 and it places you in a better position to bump the ball back to the opposite end.
JanIsaac Concepcion You can go almost as fast reversing as going forward, using the backflip jump. Why do you think every team sports defensive players go on reverse when they back up to their net. Anyway, unless you are higher than D2, I don’t really need your advice :)
Can't climb anymore, I just hit Champ 1 in 3s and 2s and every game I feel like I had a good game, however Im no way near "carrying" or being the mvp. I got so much games where I have 100-200 pts and that I feel like I didnt have a bad game. Really hurt the confidence at the point where 6-10 games in the day I begin to fuck everything up. Went up and down of Champ 1 4-5 times after reaching div 4 in c1 and div 1 in d3. So frustrating. However if anything Im lacking with these mechanics. Couldnt score a Ceiling shot to save my life and I cant aerial out of the backboard to score. Positioning is the key.
I dont do anything fancy. Dont even air roll. Hardly ever dribble more than just to pass it. I'm a beast at defense (thanks to playing goalie in hockey growing up). Champ 2 almost 3 here. People here generally aren't mechanical gods just faster reactions and better positioning
@rachael the thing is: the better mechanics you have, the more likely it is for you to have a fast response to a scenario that happens. As for positioning, it is the key and hardest thing to learn probably, since you can't really just repeat a certain move and save it to your muscle memory in free play or custom practice, but you just have to play games more and more until you get "in touch" with those scenarios so many times that it refines your decision making and reaction. You just gotta play more. The more you put effort in to actually thinking what you are doing and why you are doing it and checking replays afterwards and recognizing those things that went right or wrong and you'll become better faster. Also better mechanics allow for more versatile positioning as well since you can have more options to go for something if you can for instance take-off from the wall and fly directly to the ball without air rolling your car the right way first or just plainly have a better touch at the ball to make it go faster and more accurate etc.
@@trolloroo9807 all I hear is blah blah blah tbh. Ive done just fine without doing anything remotely fancy. Its not needed. As long as you have consistency and play fast you'll climb Who the fuck wastes playing time watching replays its the most retarded thing ever. Its a video game. And youre never going to be a pro. Dont waste your play time
@@rachael3533 All I hear is blablabla as well. Pro's watch back their replays... so maybe that's why we shouldn't listen to you and listen to pros. Champ 2 isn't that good, I know because I am one lol
@@rachael3533 Its not about fancy, you completely missed his point. Practicing those mechanics will result in much better car control which leads to playing fast and being consistent.
Been c2 for the longest time but now i only play unranked. I know I am good at positioning, at defense, and am good at double touches I am just scared to go into ranked for some reason. Beaten alot of GC players in unranked. One reason is that I still don't really know how to fast aerial lol. I really only play ranked for my champ rewards and then back to unranked.
@denizmax433 wtf? A C2 with no idea how to fast aerial?? Fast aerial is the simplest mechanical thing in the game and very easy to grind it in your muscle memory (tip, set your dodge deadzone between 0.5-0.7 or something like that). And why would you be afraid of ranked? It's a freaking game it's not like Satan asked you to play a game and you would lose your soul to him if you lost... Wtf is wrong with people? I suppose it's that kind of people who start getting all emotional against your own teammate if they fail or miss a single thing and start hitting that forfeit button like an autistic nut case. Or it's the other way around so that you're the one that's being afraid of all the salty assholes that you meet in ranked way too often in this game (or in any game really, the sad truth is that a high percentage of people are just plainly dumb and spiritually undeveloped). No offence meant, I hope you all best dude even if you recognized yourself as either of the players I described.
@@trolloroo9807 You're probably right about it having to do with deadzone settings but damn dude thats quite an assumption just because he doesn't play ranked lol
I started rocket league about 2 months ago playing a couple nights a week and I’m fairly easily solo climbing through diamond from mostly just proper positioning and aerial training. Forcing myself to be 3rd man a lot of the time and make sure I’m the defense when my teammates won’t position defensively. Most of what I’ve been getting by on is just positioning I learned from growing up playing soccer. The biggest thing I’ve noticed with lower than champ 2 players is just not proper positioning and not understanding rotations and cutting rotation. I’ve seen some plats have some pretty shockingly good mechanics but there positioning and team awareness and they’re usually the toxic ones. They don’t even realize they’re usually the problem on the team... It’s a super fun game and I’m really enjoying the huge skill ceiling!
I feel like knowing your teammates and knowing you're opponents is one of the biggest skills outside of mechanics. Good positioning and winning 50/50 balls depends on predicting how your opponents and teammates will hit the ball. Basically, you need to make a mental scouting report in your head as the game progresses. How many balls do they miss, how hard to they hit it, how quick are they to the ball, how well can they come off the wall or ceiling? You need to know what's happening before everyone else does, so you can get there first. If you know your teammates well (and your teammates know you) you can predict when they're right behind you (and where they are) and get that perfect pass to them off the wall. Or you can surmise that they're lacking in aggressiveness or predicting your moves and look to take more shots and encourage them to defensive or assist roles. And defensively you need to know if anyone's not carrying their weight so you can make up for them.
I've always loved this game because of the possibilities with the mechanics. I've spent countless hours practicing advanced mechanics and can air dribble and ceiling shot very consistently. That with decent basic skills like whats in the video did get me to champ 1 but I can't progress, positioning and knowing when to commit to something is the most important aspect of this game. That being said I would still practice these mechanics a lot, being able to dribble isn't very important but practicing mechanics like that will improve your car control a lot.
Very much true. Just reached champ 1 and I am not very good at technical skills but I am good at reading the game and reacting to my opponents movement and positioning. Good video 👍🏻
Thank you Sunless. I have been trying to find things that can really help me in Rl and could help me understand were i fit in the game so i can improve.
How to get better: Play the game. Play the game a lot. Tip: Don't be affraid to fail or try something different. Insanity is trying the same thing over and over expecting different results.
Ive been playing rocket league for 3 years soon, and started in season 8 playing competitive. Most of the time i play 3s with Octane, sometimes 2s with Dominus. I do some insane last second saves, some decent aerial hits and decent game speed. Just reaching diamond 3 div 1 is a huge accomplishment for me rn and never been more scared to go into another game with randoms
I think you can add Awareness to that list. It kind of comes in with decision making. but from what I see is that a lot of players don't know where everybody is at all times on the pitch. If you know without looking where all your teammates are at all times you know when you should be going for the ball or not.
Best part about this video is I never wanted to put the time into learning how to half flip until I got to champ with my whole team always hating me for it
One thing i realised you haven't mentioned here is the fact that if you are way up on the and trying to recover back down to the ground, the normal way would be just to drive down, but i found that if you jump off the wall and point your roof downwards and use your second jump without pressing any direction it's much more effective and saves you some distance to travel from the wall back on the ground
this video is pretty accurate. im a plat 3/diamond 1 player, but im ab as mechanically good as a silver. im not even that consistent in the air, and pretty much only know how to double jump aerial (i suck at single jump then flip aerials). but, im very good at getting powerful hits, have very good reaction time, and am decent at 50/50s. the one thing you didnt mention thats been so important for me is the ability to put the ball on target time after time again, bc someone eventually will mess up. im also pretty competent defensively.
I think you overlooked the most important mechanic in the game: faith in your teammates. I'm not a high ranked player, just don't play the game that much, but I've had games where I could tell the other people I had on a team believed in each other, and we crushed a team that it turned out was a rank higher than the team I was on.
Point 3, 4 and 5 is the ability to read the game/ball which I would say is the most important thing in every rank, the different ranks have some kind anchor in one of these points where as champ+ uses better of them all.
As a plat 2, I can say I don't use any advance mechanics except half flipping. I use my experience to help win games as well as long shots. Experience has helped me clear the ball better and read ball bounces off the wall. I think it goes a long way having lots of experience in the game. One of my friends who just got rocket league asked for some tips. I told him some stuff, such as get used to the ball bouncing especially off the wall, positioning (bit hard to teach when he has less than 1 hour), making sure you hit the ball (as he missed in a private match haha). It was hard to teach him stuff since he had just gotten the game. We played one match in casual which we won 4-3 after going 3 goals down. He was alright for a newbie, he missed the ball a few times but I always told him that this is your first game. After all this, he hasn't played it since. He hasn't said anything about it to me, I think he just hasn't been in the mood to learn a new game.
Thanks everyone! If you want more specific drills for those critical base mechanics, you can check out my Ultimate Training Guide: ruclips.net/video/U5VXmGx9ou0/видео.html
Edit: Some of you are asking about fast/quick aerials. I actually didn't include those because at this point I consider them to be as fundemental and basic as the aerial itself (which is reflective of how far the playerbase has some). Fast aerials are super critical in becoming faster/more effeciant at the game!
Outro song?
I think 'quick aerials' sort of fits under the umbrella of both 50/50 skill, as well as reaction speed, so you're good.
@@Pete133 I found myself doing the same thing but I liked the effect.
People would be surprised at how much of their slow reaction time is purely just because they aren't watching the other cars. Reading where they are about to hit it before they do is huge in playing faster

The Bud Knight what Ben said. You pretty much just have to discipline yourself to train. Haha most important play for fun but if you want to rank up fast then you have to train. The biggest thing for me was learning aerial car control by just spinning and all that in the air.

Told them after the game to go and have a look at the replay and count the times they cut me off or chased the ball across the field when they should have been going back and got greeted with a "lol you suck dude".
gg
Today I played with a guy while that was the MVP yet he never used air roll at diamond 3 rank

I have to agree. I beat Al0t with these tips, I have 1542 MMR
One skill to learn is how to play off the wall...
And that's why I'll forever be gold/plat
Go into free play for a few minutes every time you turn the game on and force yourself to land on the wall and jump from the wall at all sorts of angles at full speed. Learn to air roll your car to land flat and just go at it every day. It took me a week to get it down to where I can be ~60% effective on the wall.

You forgot RECOVERIES ! Recovering fast after an aerial, or a bump !
Recovery isn't so important in 3s
I disagree, recoveries are what makes you a faster player, and 3s is where speed is the most important. Recovering faster means challenging the ball earlier, getting in defense faster, and overall spending less time idle just flopping around waiting for your car to get on it's 4 wheels !
I ONLY get bumped most of the time so i personally need those tips.
Nat P he said half flip which is a recovery technique he also grew on fromthat
Yes! If you can't recover quickly from being in the air, you're basically doomed at higher ranks.

Position is most RL players problem I like defending but I always see double commitment more than anything in 3s
Yeah people not rotating back or being greedy I'm decent at both offensive and defense but I'm not that good at actually goal tending

Hey Sunless, I just wanted to say that I haven't played Rocket League in probably about a year but I got recommended one of your videos and now I can't stop watching them. Your video making skills are seriously on point - extremely addictive!
And now you're also making me want to play RL again...
On the topic of reaction time:
Reaction comes through repetition, when you do something enough times (over and over and over) it becomes instinctual.
I miss more than I should at this rank. way more... :(
U seems to have the brain to get higher, practice and see ya higher soon
You can probably fix Ur missing With And adjustment to your camera settings And controller deadzone settings. I made some tweaks after 1500 hours And went fast from c1 to c3 in 3s And 2s.

@@fritidjoffen After changing my controller deadzone from .3 to .1 I can confirm doing this helped me exponentially after getting use to it at least which took me a long time. The player I like to reference is Karma. Last season in the Rival series, I saw a couple of her games and she played like the fucking Hulk. She wasn't doing anything crazy, Just slamming the ball, slamming her opponents, getting in the right position and doing it all as quickly as possible without being out of control. Typical Tom you’re stuck in d3 because you deserve to be d3
i would say a monumental thing is shot placement, once you get in the upper diamond area it is so advantageous to be able to put the ball in a specific spot in the net, on the backboard, or to your teammates when trying to put points on the board.

Love the video! Ill give you an almond for my appreciation.
That's genius. I used to do those matches at regular speed but I like your idea here. Hat's off to ya, bud.

I’m champ 1 and i’ve never thought about these things, when i’m ungrounded i’ll try these things (hopefully I become Champ 2 after a couple matches)
6:56 are we just gonna ignore that save by panda
@@kamil4170 so we are going to ignore it
They didnt actually hit it. Look at the top right corner for the save message that doesn't show up.
Carter Lindemuth it might be because it’s a replay, I’m not sure tho
Im so dead though
I just wasted 3 months trying to freestyle
Beyond the 5 essentials is good rotation. Positioning yourself to get good touches and be where you need to is the most important in my book.
So I noticed In your video you said you we met sure how to get better at just hitting the ball. And honestly what's helped me is learning good car control as well as a little game mechanics like what parts of the ball you need to hit with what part of your car to make it go the direction and the speed that you want.
inbetween decision making and reaction speed I think hesitation is something people should work on reducing.
Absolutely. I miss a lot of opportunities not because I can't get to it, but because I hesitate, or stop to look at my boost
YES, that's something I need to fix badly
I like how you used secret life of pets 2 soundtrack for background music
Rudy Stucker lol didn't notice that
Thanks for this video I just went from gold 3 to champ 2 in 3 games.
Seems legit
nice
Sure that seems very legit
Anoop Swarup he’s always been one of the best 1s player in the world lol
With reactions, I find Shooter games are good. Especially ones with low health, because then you need to have fast reactions
literally every match with in silver 2-gold 1 is a hell hole of people making new accounts, people switching consoles, trolls, and boosters. literally pulling my hair out being in a silvers match with the other team playing like the harlem globe trotters and ariel every shot and not missing anything. i mean in 3v3 i climbed to gold but goddamn like climbing everest every dam match against these people. am i the only one that notices this bullshit. literally ruins the game and is really unplayable unless i get lucky and face someone equal to me. i mean i can land ariels and dribble a bit but dam these dudes flying crazy style
yup its fucking annoying
Ikr I got a toxic teammate in gold and he was wall 2 air and ceiling 2 air dribbling... it was sad 😢
7:55 - 8:05 An excellent visual demonstration on why you have to use backpost rotation
im gold in everything, i can halfflip, and when i see my teammates reversing towards the goal, i cringe hard
ChubTheMaster I’m diamond and I often « reverse toward goals ». It’s quicker than rotating 180 and it places you in a better position to bump the ball back to the opposite end.
@Frank Lar reversing kill all your momentum
JanIsaac Concepcion You can go almost as fast reversing as going forward, using the backflip jump.
Why do you think every team sports defensive players go on reverse when they back up to their net.
Anyway, unless you are higher than D2, I don’t really need your advice :)
so you can take it since I am champ 2?
Conceptxion so you never, EVER, reverse ? 🤔
As long as you have consistency and play fast you'll climb
Who the fuck wastes playing time watching replays its the most retarded thing ever.
I really only play ranked for my champ rewards and then back to unranked.
play with friends and youre probably making rank a big deal. just dont take it too seriously and youll be fine(i was the same as you in season 3-4)
proxi Don't have any friends close to my rank. Lol And they are on PC anyways while I'm on xbox. And yes, but I just want to hit that GC for once.
@@Mansaber Cross-platform playing is now a thing.
You're cool dude. This is a well articulated breakdown of the basics that, like you said, are hard to explain/practice. Nice work
I started rocket league about 2 months ago playing a couple nights a week and I’m fairly easily solo climbing through diamond from mostly just proper positioning and aerial training.
Video starts at 7:15
Fast aerial wasn’t mentioned :/
I'm an elite rocket league player who stuck in plat
thedarkpenguins227 we all know
Plats are grand champs, just with bad teammates
thats what every plat says
I’m I the only player that has higher solo rank diamond 2 then other ranks ?
I used to think that way too when I was plat. But then I had to accept the harsh truth. If you’re stuck in a certain rank, it’s cause you belong there
@@bryanplasencia1267 you shut your mouth :
I'm C3 and think I have only successfully half flipped in game maybe twice.
BannanaHero fuckin bot I’m gold 1 and can half flip consistently
Lmao bruh I don’t do anything crazy and I’ve half flipped since gold as well
@@olivergrayyy1871 even more of a bot i could half flip consistently at bronze 3
Oliver Gray lol you’re gold 1 fucking trash
0:19 that's how I feel about jon sandman
so your telling me that double resetting on my opponent and then using the reaper explosion at the end to dab on him doesnt make me GC....?
Very much true. Just reached champ 1 and I am not very good at technical skills but I am good at reading the game and reacting to my opponents movement and positioning. Good video 👍🏻
Thank you Sunless. I have been trying to find things that can really help me in Rl and could help me understand were i fit in the game so i can improve.
Every pro: "to rank up, improve your mechanics"
Sunless: "to rank up, you dont need mechanics"
hmmmmm
Both are true in fact
How to get better:
Play the game. Play the game a lot.
Tip:
Don't be affraid to fail or try something different.
Insanity is trying the same thing over and over expecting different results.
You forgot the most important tip!
Demos
Ive been playing rocket league for 3 years soon, and started in season 8 playing competitive. Most of the time i play 3s with Octane, sometimes 2s with Dominus. I do some insane last second saves, some decent aerial hits and decent game speed. Just reaching diamond 3 div 1 is a huge accomplishment for me rn and never been more scared to go into another game with randoms
I think you can add Awareness to that list. It kind of comes in with decision making. but from what I see is that a lot of players don't know where everybody is at all times on the pitch. If you know without looking where all your teammates are at all times you know when you should be going for the ball or not.
get carried that’s how
FerociousKiwi55 LOL
hmm that was a really funny comment... let me just check my calender to see if i can schedule in a time for me to laugh
I'm a bronze 1 haha, let's see if this works!
Good luck. :)
did it? hahaha
So what happened lol
Any news yet??
HEEELLOOO?

Well... what do you play on🙃
PC, and no I don’t have any money
Michael Chouljian Lucky for u actually it’s going free to play soon :-) it’s a fun game, def try it
Best part about this video is I never wanted to put the time into learning how to half flip until I got to champ with my whole team always hating me for it
I think ceiling shots are important, it's a whole new way too attack or pass. Getting comfortable on the ceiling is important
Where are my plat bros at? 😭😂
ElvizNation 👋🏼
lol sup
Heyyyy
Gold hahaha
Shooting ability/accuracy, being able to hit the ball where u want is soooo usefule
Sunless : how to
Also sunless : I really dont know how to tell you to get better at this
Take a drink every time Sunless says "Wall" 😂
This video feels like it was directed to players like me lol Champ 2 but mechanic level of a plat. Good video and keep up the work Sunless!
this video is pretty accurate. im a plat 3/diamond 1 player, but im ab as mechanically good as a silver. im not even that consistent in the air, and pretty much only know how to double jump aerial (i suck at single jump then flip aerials). but, im very good at getting powerful hits, have very good reaction time, and am decent at 50/50s. the one thing you didnt mention thats been so important for me is the ability to put the ball on target time after time again, bc someone eventually will mess up. im also pretty competent defensively.
