I mean The Killing Joke is still talked about because it's one of the best comics ever published. It's one of the best known Batman comics and people still talk about it in superlative terms for good reasons. Ask people what Batman comics you should read and the Killing Joke will be on the list. The legacy of these terrible comics is that DC doesn't want people to bring it up. Also unlike the continuing presence of both Babs and the Joker, Tarantula and Mirage aren't exactly important characters. We don't see Nightwing interacting with Mirage anymore but Barbara and Joker have continuing interactions. It's also not a bizarre conclusion to draw. The comic heavily implies that's what's happened. He shoots her but then we see him slowly unbuttoning her shirt. Later when she talks to Batman she says something like "oh god Bruce I remember what he did". This is right when she wakes up in hospital and she's visibly traumatized by what's happened to her and she can't say anything else about it. She's also terrified because the Joker has kidnapped her father and she tells Batman he didn't see the Joker's eyes, he's different now. When the story moves back to Jiim, who's still being held hostage, the Joker shows off the photos he took off Barbara. It's again not explicit but we can see he stripped off all her clothes after she was shot then photographed her. Later Jim can barely get out the words when talking about the photos the Joker showed him, which he says were to drive him mad. So sure maybe Barbara breaks down after being shot in her civilian persona and despite Joker being a serial killing supervillain she thinks him shooting people is an escalation. And sure Jim wouldn't exactly enjoy his daughter being shot and he doesn't know if she's alive at this point. But that's being very generous with the Joker's boundaries and not particularly generous with what qualifies as unspeakable trauma in the Gordon family. She also doesn't just magically regain her ability to walk. Her stories for years focus on surviving and moving past her trauma and her recovery. This was her defining character storyline for years meaning she becomes a hero who survives the Joker. It's the origin story for Oracle. While you can say that's because male sexual assaults aren't taken seriously, and that's also very true, it's because of the systemic sexism that effects all the characters and all their stories. They shrug off what happened to Nightwing but they also have Bruce up and walking after Bane. They're both considered too important as characters. They also need to be kept as superheroes, Babs wasn't so lucky. The editor for Killing Joke was Len Wein and fairly famously was more than happy to see Barbara "crippled". That ironically gave her space to be allowed to process her trauma and allowed her more character growth but it wasn't the intent. The editor didn't like her and was happy to see her suffer. We weren't going to get years of Nightwing dealing with trauma because he's an important character and the view in comics at the time was he couldn't be a hero and suffer emotional trauma. It's the exact same inherent sexism at play it just presents differently. Barbara was never going to get to be the Red Hood just like Jason was never going to be the Oracle. End result is worse comics and worse characterisation for everyone.
I’ve heard claims the writer was “joking” but DC Editorial at the time was like “wait…that’s actually an idea” it was super messed up and I’m glad they didn’t do it
You need to google her (irl) origin story. Thw writer had a dom kink. Its kind of why she has a lasso, and originally ir was her only weakness. No, seriously. Google it.
Technically in some version of Damian's conception Bruce Wayne was raped. In some versions he was drugged, or mind controlled by the al Ghuls in an attempt to make the perfect soldier(that's The Blood Son movie I believe) and thus unable to consent to sexual relations; which is the definition of rape. This event is heavily glossed over due to Batman's alter ego being a "ladies man".
It was also handled poorly but for different reasons. Their canon relationship had a lot of problems and wasn't exactly healthy, he wants to punch criminals dressed as a bat for a living and she's the daughter of the immortal leader of a centuries old murderous cult. It's a lot. But for all the back and forth and nuts comic storylines they were in love. Then along came Grant Morrison. As an aside I am always up for his comics but he's not an easy writer to champion. I totally get his flaws and his annoying habits but think he's an interesting writer when he's off doing his own thing. For this story it's there because he just kinda thought that's what happened. Like sure they might have had a loving relationship or maybe Talia drugged him. Who can know? It was very controversial at the time with a lot of readers and his lazy approach to adding it didn't help. Afterwards there wasn't much of a push to include it because it didn't make a lot of sense and was literally a retcon. Also DC comics so the entire universe has been rebooted a few times since then. So glossed over sure but because it wasn't supposed to be their backstory and now isn't. A lot of poor choices, a lot of Grant Morrison choices but not same terrible choices by DC in regards to Nightwing where this was always canon.
I enjoyed some of Thalia's moments in comics and in the og version of the story where she has a child with Bruce, it is pretty much consensual (they get married beforehand and Bruce is thrilled to have a child). Then Morrison comes along and turns her into a villain. I am a Doom Patrol enthusiast but sometimes Morrison makes choices... They admitted that they didn't read the og story, after all. That was character assassination and as such the SA version of the story is controversial (and often portrayed as a racist decision). There are many retcons for this reason. I really dislike the way that they glossed over the assault in the movie, however. (Just saw that someone above my comment said something similar😅)

It's weird that starfire blames him, instead of supporting him and being there in trying time. Honestly, Dick should have been done with her after that.
Poor Nightwing went through so much including sexual assault. It also address the biggest lie that women can’t sexually assault men which is so not true.
Nightwing is definitely the number 1 hottest DC character of all time imo That being said, him being raped makes me feel bad about sexualizing him. He's still a person and shouldn't be looked at like an object
If I ever create my onscreen DC universe once I become a writer-director, don't worry, I shall keep that in mind. I protect our man with all my heart and destroy the wicked who hurt our boy. He shall be free!
But Dick Grayson was always the strongest, brightest, optimistic and full of hope of all the robins, I couldn't imagine all that dirt behind his story.. poor guy.
Damn.... That's awful. I think it's powerful for such a happy and strong character to go through this. Let alone twice. Props to the authors for awareness and sharing the message that it's not the victim's fault, but still, man.
I feel so bad for nightwing because thats what his character has become in the franchise, a punching bag for jokes as well as eye candy and sxualised but then when SA happens to him then its not taken seriously at all either shaming him for being a dog/player or turning it into a joke
It's an unfortunate life changing event for sure, but it does add to Dick Grayson character and demonstrates just how resilient Nightwing is as a hero. The same thing happened to Bruce with Talia, which later resulted in Damien's birth. It brings to light male victims of unwanted non-consental sexual assault/r*pe. I wish the comics revisited the healing process that took place in order for both Dick & Bruce to recover from those traumatic events. It's a topic that impacts both genders and should definitely be discussed even if it is only from time to time.
Bro this can raise the awareness and equality that both men and women can be a victim and a predators too 😢 Poor Dick Grayson Especially men who don't get enough attention about this
OK, I agree that this is a subject (male victims of SA) that needs to be addressed. Having the same character victimized in two different manners by two different preditors is concerning for a few reasons. First of all to have this character (Dick Grayson) become a victim is a powerful message that ANYBODY CAN be a victim of SA. That was good. However, having the same character victimized a second time on a different manner makes it seem as though he somehow is causing this to happen to him, and that is a horrible message to send out.
Then I think fan fic writers have used the 'multiple instances' to comment on victim blaming, slut shaming, how some victims can internalise that sexualization that was forced apon them etc. And created really grounded stories. Also I'm imagining shit or wasn't there also a comic where dick was 16, fresh in bludhaven and some woman uses a sexual relationship to manipulate him? That bloody counts too.
@@gingivitis9148 I don't know about that one, but my point is having him S.A.d already opens all of the important points without giving him additional trauma to work through.
Actually, it would be better if Jason also got involved with the party. Out of all members of the Batfamily, Jason hates rape more than anyone (Felipe Garzonas, people?), and we know he has a soft spot for his family, so really, he should have a say on how to punish the woman who raped his older brother. Double points if Mirage is also brought to trial and punished as well. Maybe Jason can cut their heads off and stuff them in a duffel bag? 😂, oh that duffel bag deserves more credit than it gets for supporting all that weight of eight human heads..
The writer of #93, Devin Grayson (seriously, when your last name is literally Grayson, you know you were just bound to end up being involved with Nightwing eventually) at first claimed it was ‘non-consensual’ and not r@pe. She did apologize for that later on once she realized that non-consensual sex and r@pe are basically synonyms (and she didn’t know it… before…?) “I was wrong. I messed that one up and I apologize. My interview comments were uninformed and ignorant and I’m grateful for the chance to revisit the issue.” I will give credit that it was pretty ahead of its time for the comic to address SA done to men rather than just women. But seriously, #93 and the issues leading up to it is probably the darkest moment in the history of the character. Really sad 😔
The sad thing is that this is more common than a lot of people probably think. Many people will tell you that men SA women more than women SA men. While that’s more or less true as far as I know, a lot of people will also tell you that even when men do get SA’d, it’s usually by other men. But the problem with that is that the statistics (by the CDC for example) they often use only accounts for forced penetration (which is not always but usually done by men) and separates men being forced *to* penetrate *by* the assailant (which is not always but usually done by women) as a different category, with that category being around 1 in 9 men last I read. So while I grant that the majority of abuse is still done by men, when the victim *is* male, it actually is more often women than other men.
This is why I love Nightwing and Spider-Man. They show how real these types of things can get, being poverty, sexual abuse, cheating, death, depression, abandonment, abuse, and so much other stuff
I think the Mirage incident can be swept aside cause of all the universe resets but stuff like Tarantula & Talia need serious & earnest addressing, not a retcon to undo it.
This made me so mad not just because I feel like dick should’ve beat the fuck out of her but also because he didn’t deserve this he’s a nice guy who wants to help people I hope this got retconned by the new 52
The second one was really disturbing since Nightwing was poisoned, his body was numb and perhaps going into shock. Tarantula took advantage of him in the worst way. In real life this would be basically violating someone when they are super drunk or drugged.
Actually, worse, I heard it happened 3 times. The third one is some Asian girl whose name I forgot about, and they say she did it while he was 17. How despicable! 😡
Batman himself was also assaulted in order to have Damien; it would be so cool if these facts were more widely known so that men/boys could see their heroes and know that even they can fall victim to these kinds of things, but that they're still heroes, no less of a person and have no reason to feel shame for what's happened to them.
I know the slut shaming was meant to be a comedic moment with her then asking who’s better but who finds out their friend was tricked into sex and proceeds to call them a slut and ask them how it was
Finally someone brought that up too cuz I didn't like how they handled Nightwing in that movie at all 💀 I still love Harley Quinn but damn, that screen rubbed me the wrong way. Nightwing couldn't push Harley away or do anything because he was tied up to a bed, and everyone saying it's consensual just cuz he got a b*ner ?? Harley took advantaged of him in that same moment like Mirage and Tarantula did; and it fucking disappoints me that people like the one in these replies fail to see that.

Mirage and Taranula making me contemplate breaking Bruce’s no kill rule…..

No, seriously. Google it.
"When a man walks behind a woman, it's suspicious. But when a woman does it..."
Then nobody cares .__.
That was the original version, and the version I go by, Bruce being date raped. Talia is hot. Talia is also out of her mind
This is one of the reasonings and excuses used on rape victims in defense of the rapist.
I remember in the movie they play it off as a joke...

I want people to boycott DC comics and ensure they learn their lesson before they lose sales for this..
Then I think fan fic writers have used the 'multiple instances' to comment on victim blaming, slut shaming, how some victims can internalise that sexualization that was forced apon them etc. And created really grounded stories.

Double points if Mirage is also brought to trial and punished as well. Maybe Jason can cut their heads off and stuff them in a duffel bag? 😂, oh that duffel bag deserves more credit than it gets for supporting all that weight of eight human heads..

“I was wrong. I messed that one up and I apologize. My interview comments were uninformed and ignorant and I’m grateful for the chance to revisit the issue.”

Father and son were both vulnerable. This makes me sad
I think the Mirage incident can be swept aside cause of all the universe resets but stuff like Tarantula & Talia need serious & earnest addressing, not a retcon to undo it.

I see a lot of people from both genders and all walks of life saying that in this comment section tbh
I hope people are aware that many men actually do enjoy when such a circumstance occurs but it certainly isn't every male. That generalization has to stop. A lot of men can't even mention that they were raped and be taken seriously.
@@samalexander2712 Nightwing definitely didn’t like it though bro was paralyzed and raped by Big booty Latina and had to watch in pain
@@MarcoTheDarco Funny thing is, he does mention that afterwards he liked it for Tarantula, which is why it's not a great example of a male being a rape victim to a woman.
Dick Grayson and spiderman just got it different😭
People also don’t realize men can also get sexually harassed or assaulted
The panel shot of tarantula and Nightwing gave Invincible vibes. If you know you know
I know 😞
