I adore Scrooged. Karen Allen is just adorable throughout and Carol Kane is hilarious as the ghost of Christmas present (because she's a gift 🤩). Carol slapping the 💩 out of Bill will always make me laugh.
That scene with the Ghost of Christmas Future is the darkest scene in any Christmas movie. From Calvin being locked in a mental asylum to Claire turning evil to Frank being trapped in a burning coffin alive were all just pure horror and nightmare fuel.
The Richard Pryor joke was big then, he even used it in his monologue in one of his stand up shows, referring to the time he set himself on fire while freebasing cocaine. He had burns on parts of his body, from when he set himself on fire.
Oh man, my all time favorite Christmas movie! People always talk about the usual suspects like Christmas Story, Home Alone or Elf but they always sleep on this one.
I might be an odd one for this but my two favorite Christmas movies are Scrooged, of course, and Four Christmases from 2008. These are the two that I try to watch every Christmas season.
21:18 "Herman" is played by Michael J. Pollard. He was best known for his role as C.W. Moss, in the film Bonnie and Clyde (1967), which earned him critical acclaim along with nominations for an Academy Award, a British Academy Film Award, and two Golden Globe Awards.
14:20 That Richard Pryor reference is dark. Sometime before this film, an inebriated Richard Pryor poured Bacardi 151 on himself, set himself on fire and ran down Sunset Blvd.
He was free basing and high as kite wearing a 70's nylon shirt. He spilled alcohol on the shirt and freebasing caught him on fire. At first, he was so loaded he did not realize what was happening but then ran down the street. I was an apartment manager at the time when this occurred and one of my tenants was a musician who knew Richard Pryer very well and went to the hospital to see him in ICU.
All 3 of Bill Murray's brothers are also in this movie. His character brother James is played by his real life brother John Murray. Another brother Joel Murray plays one of James party guests and another brother Brian Doyle Murray plays Frank's father.
2:25 "Good night. Good work. Sleep well. I'll most likely fire you in the morning." I once worked for a boss like that. I got out of that job as quickly as I could.
Happy Holidays, everyone! I still have memories of seeing this film on TV as a child, and I can't forget Carol Kane, as the Ghost of Christmas Past, beating up Bill Murray. Apparently, she was reluctant to do it in real life.
This movie had everything and more! It took on a classic story and make it into a nice comedic work of art. It is a nice holiday film and worth the time spent. Merry Christmas Jen!
SCROOGED is the greatest Christmas movie ever made, and I don't state this lightly. Yes, better than Wonderful Life, A Christmas Story, Die Hard, Christmas Vacation, Home Alone and any other beloved classic you can think of.
@christopherschreiber5805 that's a pretty good movie but objectively speaking, SCROOGED is #1. I will die on that hill. And as a victim of sexual assault when I was a child, I can't watch anything that Kevin Spacey does anymore. I'll just leave it at that.
@@jkhoover I'm 46, so neither of us are really old enough to remember the event, but I've probably had someone explain the joke to me at some point in the 36 years since this movie came out. I've also seen videos of Richard Pryor's later standup where he recounts the infamous freebasing incident.
@chrissmalley83 I've heard the story at some point in my life, but it was buried deep in my subconscious. In a million years, I never would have connected it to this joke though.
2:32 - The actor is Bobcat Goldthwait ! Yes, he was in Police Academy 2, and he also directed the Robin Williams' movie, "World's Greatest Dad". I highly recommend World's Greatest Dad, but beware that it's a dark comedy / drama.
The Ghost of Christmas Past (Cab driver) was played by David Johanson, front man for the early 70s proto punk group, The New York Dolls. He often opened shows as his alter ego, Dexter Poindexter singing with a Latin dance combo. This latter band put out an album of great dance music including the hit, "Hot, Hot, Hot", a cover of the Harry Belafonte sing played at the end of Beetlejuice. The Ghost of Christmas Present was Carole Kane who played Valery, wife of Miracle Max in The Princess Bride, and many other things. Claire was Karen Allen, who starred in Raiders of the Lost Ark, Starman, and Animal House. I saw her in a crowded Amtrak train once, before she got famous and she smiled at me and melted me.
This movie has grown on me over the years. Muppet Christmas is the best adaption of the Christmas Carol. The original Miracle on 34th street is my favorite Christmas movie overall though. Fun reaction Jen!
My favorite part of any Christmas Carol story is the Ghost of Christmas Future, and I've always enjoyed how much they lean into the gallows humor for this segment. But of course, Carol Kane as Christmas Present is delightfully mean in her own way.
The folk at the shelter have mistaken him for Richard Burton. One of the major actors of the 20th century. And while I'm at it, Frank's brother is played by Bill Murray's actual brother. And Franks's father, in the past, is played by another of his brothers.
I loved your reaction to this film, Jen, this is one of my favourite Christmas films. The entire final monologue was ad-libbed by Murray. Also him falling in the restaurant and him elbowing Alfie Woodard in the face when the production version of the ghost of Christmas future popped out of the elevator were both accidents that were left in for the film.
There are so many timeless gags in this. Like Groundhog Day actually. There are a lot of elements between the two. So I was dragged to this when I was little in someone in my group was very obnoxious through the whole film and when Bill points to the loud one in the audience everyone turned in their seat and stared at him lol.

I like the subtle joke that everyone keeps referring to "Charles Dickens' immortal classic 'Scrooge'." The name of the short story was, of course, "A Christmas Carol in Prose." A little sign that nobody working on the TV adaptation were at all familiar with the source material.
Bill Murray's older brother Brian Doyle Murray's Dad to Bill/Frank/Francis as a kid in this, & his younger brother James is his bro' in this, & yet another brother is a guest at James'🎄 party!
