Brett, I think you nailed it on what this game feels like. It's really the Attack of the Killer Tomatoes of fighting games.
Although I never played this game I remember this quite well after 20 years.
For street fighter
i know evil ryu is obviously a what if version of the normal one.
But it was always a headcanon of mine that evil ryu(ultra sf 4 version) and the good ryu were actually different seperate characters, evil ryu was actually a young gouki,and that we were actually seeing how akuma gave into to satsui no hado,the whole time.
P.S Evil ryu's story is young akuma's past,and Oni is akuma's future.
The ryu,the one with the white karate gear,student of gouken and friend to ken masters,is a different
Character,seperate from the satsui no hado version. Basically what I'm trying to say is that we were seeing two seperate timelines of who we thought was one character . from two seperate time periods the whole time evil ryu in super street fighter 4 was actually gouki,in his youth,and we were fooled into thinking he was an evil version of ryu.
I know that you're going to say that that's retarded or stupid,so don't bother replying,if you don't want to.
And before you say what about asura's wrath,that game was non canon,meaning it never officially happened in the main street fighter storyline,akuma never went oni and ryu never went dark mode,because it's established in the main canon that if those two characters became their ultimate counterparts they would be stuck like that forever.
And it's a fact that in canon that ryu fully rid himself away of the no hado for good by the time of sf3,anyway like i said in my theory.
The evil ryu in street fighter 4 and ryu who is the main character in all street fighter games are seperate characters from different eras. The hypothetical evil ryu in reality is actually young gouki in the past,and ryu the student of master gouken,friend of ken and the man who scared sagat,is a different character entirely in the present day era.

AND I'M NOT SAYING AKUMA AND RYU ARE THE SAME PERSON,NO!!!! Gameplay wise I know satsui no hado ryu is meant to be an evil version of the normal version that's pretty obvious. What i mean is that Storywise everything we saw here in evil ryu's prologue opening up to his story ending all took place in a different era,in the past.
My Theory was that capcom was secretly showing us the backstory of gouki/akuma's past and they used evil ryu as a metaphorical way to portray him.
OMFG WMAC MASTERS I THOUGHT THAT SHOW WAS JUST A FEVER DREAM! I been trying to remember the name of that show for over a decade.
Real talk, those polygon models are surprisingly good and detailed for the N64.

Omg I had this game growing up!
To be a massive historical fencing nerd, I was actually impressed with Psyclown's "sword and shield" technique - at least as far as his starting animation (weapon held up and back, shield held out edge-forward) and victory animation (weapon and shield held out together) go. Those are actual stances from old sword-and-shield manuals.

since I never owned a N64 the fighting games for the system always fascinated me because they were so out there now that I am older and get the mechanics of good fighting games I'm glad I owned a playstation since all I played were rpgs and fighting games and all the good fighting games seemed to be on that platform still nice to see you guys play these wonky ass games though
Have you guys played "Time Killers"? 2D Fighting game where removing limbs is a key game mechanic
This game looks like something that'd show in the background of an Adam Sandler movie to illustrate how kids "only like violent games"
