I want PlayStation All-Stars 2 to happen so we get to play as Father Gascoigne
The one thing I like more about this game then Smash Bros is how the Stages have some crossover transitions where other franchises come in and take over. Helps get the idea across that it is multiple worlds being mashed together.
This game is still low-key one of my favorite fighting games. My friends and I spend hours on that game.
Does anyone else feel both nostalgic and anxious just looking at that filling thermometer from Little Big Planet?
Brett's a low key Jack of all trades: writer, producer, editor, comic, FGC aficionado ... what other dope deeds has he done and is just sitting on???
apparently he used to make bullets with his dad. which is the wildest Brett factoid to me
I'd ad tinkerer/engineer to the list as well since he's done custom hardware/modding jobs on people's consoles. At this point, there's probably not much that Brett can't do. I know exactly who to go in the beginning of an apocolypse situation XD
Diet and excercise
I would love a sequel with the hunter from Bloodborne, Majima from Yakuza, and Joker from P5.
All of my money.
Wow, didn't know you worked on this. Cool.
That MediEvil level you're talking about with the talking gargoyle DID come out, by the way.
This is still a game that really hits home with me, glad to see you guys take some time to play it. Also, I totally forgot you were part of SuperBot, Brett, I should've gotten in touch with you for the PSAS documentary I made last year for the game's fifth anniversary!
I would love to hear you do an interview. That would be awesome. I love your game!
I should clarify, _I_ didn't work on the game at all! I'm just somebody who followed it during development as a fan, and did research for any gaps I found!
I'd be more than down for some sort of interview if Brett was willing! I genuinely don't know how much I can say about the potential for a sequel considering how mum Sony's been, though - outside of 4chan rumors, there's nothing implying they'll come back to the idea soon.
I'm still hoping for a PSASBR 2 to this day.
Brett worked on this game? That's actually awesome!
I had a lot of fun with this game when it came out. Glad to see you guys playing it.
FINALLY! I loved this game and I was always really bummed that it didn't hit off. I get that there's a knee jerk reaction when games come out that are clearly feeding off another's popularity but Play Station AllStars felt like it's own experience. It felt, at least, as though it had enough work put into it to justify it's existence. I wish more people would have given it a shot.
I remember the one character I really wanted to see in this game even though I knew it'd be impossible was Elizabeth from Persona 3. I liked the idea that the quest she sends herself on is so epic that it literally transcends into the universes of other games.
Frankly, I really hope this game gets a return...but in a different format to be a bit more unique. Oh, and Crash + Spyro!
I'll be honest, this game was never got me hype level, but i didn't know that you Brett worked on this game, you did pretty good job.
Knack for PS All-Stars Ultimate!
I freaking loveee this game so glad u guys got to it
It was adorable when those Patapon things annoyed the masked giant so he smashed them, and they smashed him harder XD
I enjoyed this game when it came out! It introduced me to many Playstation franchises I knew and haven't since I played a lot of 360. It introduced me to one of my favorite series Gravity Rush thanks to Kat being DLC! Loved seeing you guys play it and bring back those memories.
When I played this with my friends back in the day, I always picked Big Daddy and Sir Daniel. I'm SUPER HYPE for the new MediEvil remaster coming to PS4.
Answer of the day: Never heard a parent call someone little mama or little papa
Maybe he's thinking about an episode of Johnny Bravo
Love Brett's sense of humour
Thank you Bret for rounding out your victory with Sir Dan. Props upon props.
QOTD: Santell that isn't a thing brother. You made that up. 26 years old, never heard it.
This game needs a sequel. And a kickstarter
I've heard it mostly from some Mexicans I worked with. They'll call their kids Mami or Papi, and it extends to younger coworkers. Confused the hell out of me because I saw Papas fritas on the fry boxes, so I thought she was calling me a potato.
Love the Brett backstory. Thanks for sharing!
It's cool hearing people having fun while playing this game.
So bummed that Dart from Legend of Dragoon wasn't released before the game lost support =(
At least someone is thinking of him in the industry!
really cool that Brett worked on this really sad to see both the public and Sony turn their back on this cause this game was dope super fun to play easy to pick up and difficult to master like a good fighting game should be my only complaint with the game which is just a nitpick really was the under representation of the ps1 era of games I wanted Crash, Spyro, and Croc just to name few but whatever I'm happy we even got this and my fingers are still crossed that we might by some miracle get another game like this in the future
God I want a sequel to this game.
Also it has one of the best video game intros ever, don't @ me.
Yeah that's pretty awesome you worked on this Brett. Because I used to play this all the time with my family. I played Parappa Kratos and Sweet Tooth, plus yeah Santell I've heard lil mama but not papa lol.
"I worked on the game! I've seen it! How are you doing that to me?"
Brett ladies and gentlemen.
Sorry, but all I can hear watching the video is "PATA PATA PATA PON!"
Damn PTSD...
"Don't you let me get my fish off"
My problem with Playstation All-Stars comes down to the moment to moment gameplay being vastly unimportant. I can get wailed on the entire time but if I can dodge your supers then it doesn't matter. It limits how effective you can be with a character as the only goal is to get off a super to kill your opponent. In 1v1 matches typically whoever gets the first kill wins.
Add in the simplified controls from Smash along with the chaotic nature of moving stages and random items and you're left with a mixed bag that often leaves you wondering why you're bothering with majority of what it gives you. Most items I would bypass because I can deal more damage just spamming basic attacks and then executing a super as soon as I see an opening.
Health should always be a resource in fighting games.
I played a little bit of this game because it was on PS+ when I got my PS3, and I remember the controls feeling pretty sluggish in addition to what you've said.
PSASBR felt really at odds with itself
- It wanted to be a celebration of the PS brand but its character selection felt really bland - or felt like it was just used to highlight current games
- It wanted to be a serious deep fighter but also a free for all party fighter
- it brought a lot of properties together but also never really cared about giving them destinct personalities (the fact that they have stages not associated with any playable characters makes it even more confusing)
Never played it, but I could agree from just seeing it now and in the past. The idea what you're not actually hurting someone, just kinda mugging them for orbs seems silly. The concept of super only finishes is nice for party game style, but it somewhat renders 90% of your attacks pointless.
I have so many fond memories of playing this game with my buds. I went in on that DLC too. Isaac from Dead Space was overpowered as hell, that level one super made my friends so angry they had to ban me from playing him haha. A little disappointed we didn’t get to see Sackboy’s teleport shenanigans, but still a great episode.
Great episode love you guys!
I remember being in the camp of people who was like "It's not Smash enough." I loved the game I just wasn't a fan of the whole Only Supers Can Kill People thing. I did love the game for its characters and gameplay and yeah, that music is hype as heck. I just remember the supers got stale pretty quickly when I played with friends. We wanted a bit more chaos, I suppose. That's really cool that Brett worked on it, though. So says The All-Father.
I honestly loved this game when it came out
I also remember that online, there was one Parappa that knew a glitch with the boom box that would just give an insane amount of orbs, really fast
I unironically want a sequel if just for the Journey map and the visual upgrade to Kat
Cause man, this game was my first interaction with Gravity Rush, and they managed to make her uuuuuuuuuh-gly
i remember wrecking in this at a lan. good times
Fun watch! My opinion on this game has softened over the years. Helps that I've been feelin nostalic for old Sony.
Also makes me wonder... when in the hell are we getting that Medievil remake?
Wait wait hold the phone... Brett worked on this game? Pretty awesome!
QOTD: I'm Hispanic and my parents/grandparents always refer to children as "Mamita" and "Papito" which basically means lil mama or lil papa.
Edit: It's not just my family. Everybody down here in South Texas says this.
Edit 2: PS Allstars 2, give me Knack, baby!
I've heard the same thing too. I am also Hispanic and from South Texas. Maybe Santell lives in or near a Hispanic neighborhood?
Are we saying Santell was *right* about something???
I loved this game! Just wished some people didn't get on the bandwagon of being like Smash...
I dunno, this game never really hit home with me. But it's cool to hear you worked on it Brett! And that Parappa/Metal Gear remix /was/ hecking rad.
...If it ever did get brought back though, I wouldn't mind seeing someone from Legend of Dragoon getting some attention. (Which would realistically be Dart, but y'know -- hypotheticals.)
This is the game me and friends would play every night after school, sucks to hear the just cut funding to it, still have horrible PTSD memories of Nathan Drake's level 2
Brett MADE this
I had no idea Brett worked on PSABR! I'd love to hear a little bit more about how the atmosphere inside SuperBot was given all the hate PSABR garnered. Did they consider going back on the things everybody hated? Because I always felt that the kneejerk was unfair but when the mechanics relating to KOs and Supers were revealed, I kinda felt like the hate was for the wrong reason but not unjustified.
I currently have a love/hate relationship with this game, but I remember playing the hell out of the vita version when it came out and during the DLC period. And I didn't know you worked on this too, that's cool to hear. I mained Sir Daniel and with every patch note that came out I ended up getting bummed out that Kratos got most of the good buffs while the other characters didn't, like Dan.
Though with all the rumors of Sony considering doing another PS All-Stars thing, I hope that ends up happening since they could finally get Crash and Spyro in the game, with the remaster trilogies on PS4 and them doing well. This is a game that with Smash Ultimate coming out, ends up not aging well, but if they tried it again it could really be something great.
I have to say, if there's ever a sequel, I hope we get more Square representation since they seem more amiable to cross-overs lately.
Would love to see representation for Ehrgeiz, Einhander, Brave Fencer Musashi, Tobal No.1, etc.
I'd also like to see some more obscure representation as well - Intelligent Qube/Kurushi, Jumping Flash, etc.
It always both surprised and saddened me that most of the vivid, weird PS1 era stuff was left out.
Someone needs to send them Cartoon Network Punch Time Explosion.
Err Santell I believe we had HP bars since Brawl. It's was a mode that was called Stamina mode which made Smash Bros more of a Traditional fighter.
that was in melee too
People hate on this game but man this was my shit in college. Sucha fun time.
Question of the day who is your favorite PlayStation character. I like crash bandicoot and tifa from final fantasy 7
Jak and Daxter.
Sonicplier unfortunately, even though their first appearances are from the PS1, none of those 2 are Playstation characters, as in not owned be Sony.
SACKBOY
Sir Dan... I miss MediEvil and the "new" remaster _or whatever_ just won't be the same.
Ragefat crash bandicoot is one of the ps1 mascots
Oh wow never knew I would come across someone who did work on playstation all-stars. In all my years of watching people play it.
I would really love to know what those last 4 dlc characters were. I know abe from oddsworld and this guy from legend of dragoon or something were leaked to be cancelled with a gravity rush/journey stage also planned but I still want to know what else was planned
More than half of these characters haven't been seen since this game lol. Heavenly Sword seemed like it was going to be a huge IP then nothing and they had a nerve to but it's main character in this game.
I have no problem with games in the style of smash. the thing I don't like about this game is the fact that you HAVE to super if you want to kill. always felt weird to me. It's col that you worked on this game tho brett!
I think the complaints stem from exactly what he says at the start of the video. It's too much like smash, but not enough like smash. I think in some ways if they just went straight smash clone it would have been better received, but if they branched out more instead of emulating smash as much as they did, it could have also been a better product.
I'm not sure if it's local PvP, but God of War Ascension has PvP. I hope you guys do that for a unique episode :)
Yoooooo TOURNEY PLEZZZ
Very weird to me that PS All Stars didn’t have classic PS characters like Crash, Spyro, or even Cloud
Activision is the reason why Crash and Spyro aren't in, asked for too much money.
as for Cloud, Lightning from FF13 was supposedly the one to be put in as DLC due to Square Enix but never came through *feels*
It was weird how people treated this game. Everyone complained that it was a smash clone but nowadays there's dozens of smash clones like Rivals which is really well liked
Etriel321 Something about how they feel is different.
Wow, Brett got slapped down by Kojima. That's unfortunate.
parappa had 3 games if you count um jammer lammy
I will never forgive them for leaving out Dart.
Answer of the day: actually, that’s a local cultural thing the Native Americans near me do. If you’re male, they call you Pa, and if you’re female they call you Ma. And this is regardless of age. I’ve seen kids around 5 or 6 called Ma or Pa by a complete stranger and their own parents/grandparents.
The dealbreaker for me with this game is simply that you can only kill with finishers, most of the match doesnt even matter if you can hit 2-3 moves during the match and that's not my thing.
So it's true then! Please, can we see your name in the credits? That would be really cool to see.
Man one of the biggest missteps for the roster was that there were no JRPG representation. Nothing from Square Enix, Atlas, or Nippon Ichi Software. It actually would have been perfect to put in Yu Narukami and Valvatorez as rivals to each other. I’ve heard why Square declined getting involved but was there ever a reason for the other two companies?
I never heard little Papa and Mama. I hear a lot of baby baby mama or baby baby daddy
I've definitely heard people call kids lil mama, not papa tho.
How DARE you slander the good name of Nathan Drake?!
Hey Santell, Smash has had HP for like ever. People just don't play it.
I'm sure they could make a decent sequel out of this game but I think they would have to redesign how the fighting works. It just feels over-reliant on supers, like the hits in between them don't matter at all? I know they were trying to do something different but it just doesn't add up to me. Gotta say, that if they do make a sequel, they'd be fools not to add Crash, Spyro and/or Croc from the PS1 era, and the Bloodborne Hunter, Kiryu/Majima and/or Joker. I bought a PS4 earlier this year for those games (and God of War), so I'd be super disappointed haha
santell doesn't know who Sweet Tooth is, its probably for the best. his backstory is dark and disturbing lol
QOTD: I have absolutely never heard anyone refer to their daughter as li'l mama.
My neighbourhood has a large Arabic speaking community and I've heard parents call their kids "Mama". To my knowledge, it translates roughly to "Hun" or "Dear".
So it occurs to me that SNK Heroines is to KoF, what this game is to Smash. A cool idea, with one of the worst mechanics for KO'ing that I can think of.
QOTD Santell that is not a thing, not once in my 32 years have i ever hears that in any form at all, real life, movie, television, book, magazine.
Can you talk more about PlayStation All-Stars or are you like under some NDA s%%t? Who were those other characters that didn't make it, and whatnot?
from what I can say from research, characters like Dart Feld (The Legend of Dragoon), Abe (OddWorld), Lara Croft (Tomb Raider), Lightning (Final Fantasy 13), Ryu Hayabusa (Ninja Gaiden), and Tomba (Tomba) would've and could've been put in the game as DLC. More possibly could've been planned and added in.
So do you think this game failed because too many people thought it was too much like Smash or not enough like Smash?
On that note, PLEASE spend some real time with Ultimate when it comes out. Like, at least get every character some play time if you don't do like DBZF or KI. (I know it wont get the SFV treatment (but a guy can dream.))
I want to see the DD challenge for Smash Ultimate.
back in the day, as a Smash fan, i gave this game a shot, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I still prefer Smash, but the Smash fanbase has this superiority complex where any game that tries to do the Smash formula are considered "Smash clones" even though Smash wasn't even the first. should i suggest Rivals of Aether and Towerfall, both games are amazing. Slap City for the shits and giggles.
my biggest problem with this game is the fact that they used the fake ass dante instead of the real one.
(also can i get all of the insult that were supposed to be in the game?)
The Reason Reboot Dante is in is because Capcom themselves wanted Psasbr to advertise their new game and since SuperBot/Sony didn't want them to bail on the project, they went with it. Capcom was really the one to make DMC Dante be put in. At the least, his moveset and personality has the feel of OG Dante and Devil May Cry :)
Good game better than smash 4 but not better than smash overall
if this game wasnt so poorly balanced i would have loved it
i'll say Battle Royale was a great idea...but, probably (and i'm pretty sure it's just me, not hating the game tho) my issue with this game is that it becomes tiresome too quick, like 1 hour and then gets kinda meh to play and you gotta repeat the process every day you play, however, i wouldn't be mad about a sequel cuz there's still so much potential. And nope, Santell, never heard of calling someone little mama o little papa....unless we're talking in spanish, then it's kinda a common thing in some ways
The only thing I could see this game having in its corner are the characters and the maps. If it wanted to not be a Smash clone, it should have done something that made it stand out. Not bad, but nothing special.
I hear latina chicks call their kids mami or papi all the time.
The whole only getting kills off supers thing is what made this game suck. That plus if you're going to copy Smash you should probably include the best part of the game which is the percentage/ring out/stock system. Every Smash clone is garbage because they steal everything except for what makes the game so fun, all the tension and fun in smash comes from stock comebacks, saving yourself off stage, edging out a victory with high percentage, etc... all things Smash clones never copy.
This is a more combat oriented game tbh, once you learn a few kill confirms doing those supera became really fun
Also, almost all the "smash clones" have the whole percentage stuff, they are just not well refined
At least nowdays, i know the comment it's old
this entire game just looks soulless.
like, the only characters with personality are the ones from 3D platformers like sly, jak and daxter, and ratchet and clank.
the others would be better suited to be guest stars in something like soul calibur, rather than a smash bros-esque game like this.
the playstation characters have nowhere near the same level of appeal as the nintendo characters, which just puts out this whole air of desperation from the whole thing.
the main attitude felt was 'seriously? they put fat princess/a big daddy/cole(not to mention two versions of him) in this game?'.
that's why nobody liked it. it lacked personality and soul across the board.
and it's ugly as sin.
