Hands down, my favorite drummer of all time. Saw him perform in the early 90s in Chick Corea's Elektric and Acoustic band. Mind blowing. Impeccable technique and fluidity.
After all these years and when you think he’s said it all he still pulls performances like this out of the bag. Who follows guys like Dave? Plenty of technicians now playing insanely fast but without this level of taste, thoughtfulness and musicality. You’re still the man Dave!
Make sure to leave this solo video on youtube. It was sad when it went away for a while. This is one of Daves best groove solos. Seems like this man has as much variety as there are stars in the sky! Hes my favorite drummer I think hes a phenomenon. There has not been nor will be one like Dave so we need to be amazed while hes here drumming like God.
OMG that snare sound is the best ever and the hi hat sound is phenomenal too. Weckl is pure class: everything he plays is so tasteful and musical. It's a pleasure to listen to him. This would be my dream kit.
Rich T. guess the guys above have no idea what a good drumset sounds like . The snare sounds amazing and perfectly pitched to match the toms and bass. Noobs lol
20 years ago, he is known as the God of Drums... today he still is. Let's be honest, this insane level of complexity, groove, precision, depth, feel, rhythmic expression & musicality is very hard to surpass. Many legendary drummers abound in my lifetime (My fave: Steve Gadd, Vinnie Colaiuta, Simon Philips, Virgil Donati, Dennis Chambers, Steve Smith, John Robinson) ... & many others will aspire to be like him, but there'll only be one true Dave Weckl, the Maestro. Hopefully he has groomed a protege worthy enough to carry on his legacy & craft...
He wasn't always considered a musical drummer. To the contrary, after the first two or three albums with Chick Corea Elektric Band, there were lots of comments about his lack of feel, that he was too machine-like, and nothing but a bag of tricks. Believe me, I didn't wanna hear people saying that. After discovering the debut album from Chick Corea Elektric Band when I was in the 10th grade, I bought every album of theirs (five total) until the lineup changed. I was also a huge fan of Weckl's first solo album, Masterplan. But considering that I was still in high school until 1991, it all sounded good to me. I didn't have a lot to compare it to as far as fusion and jazz drumming was concerned. I was heavy into Rush, Yes, The Police, Led Zeppelin, and other bands like that. Eventually, Weckl turned a corner and his playing began to have more feel. Thank God he was around back in the mid to late 80's and early 90's. I was a huge fan no matter what his critics said. He's even better today. I once read that he used to practice 16 hours a day. I remember thinking, "No wonder he's such a badass!"
At some point in the 1990s Weckl went for lessons with Freddie Gruber and changed his whole approach to playing. Bear in mind this is a guy who was already regarded as a drumming deity, but wanted to get even better -- like if Tiger Woods had deconstructed his swing at the peak of his powers. Anyway, the end result was that Weckl's musicality and feel improved dramatically and he reached an even higher level. I believe the rethink was partly due to the criticism of him playing robotically, as you mentioned in your post.
No worries e d, music is subjective. But I do wonder from what standpoint do you keep judging Dave as the least enjoyable drummer? Perhaps you are a way more accomplished drummer than he is.... I do hope you are not criticizing for the sake of criticism. We all have our individual taste. Just relish the flavor if it suits you! Cheers!
Agreed drewper73, looking back when he did that legendary trio performance with the great Steve Gadd & Vinnie Colaiuta at the Buddy Rich Tribute, his playing felt too technical and not enough groove, unlike Steve & Vinnie who had way more feel & depth with less ghost notes. But over the years, he definitely jump leap & bounds , maturing his craft like fine vintage wine. His drive & discipline is solid rock, to develop to such level where such COMPLEXITY & GROOVE co-exists in harmony.... pure genius. Can't help but wonder what MK Speed is his brain travelling at... Btw, Masterplan was one of my fav album of his, in his big breakthrough.
A drummer as talented as Dave Weckl makes any drums or cymbals sound great. It's not the things he's hitting that make the difference, it's the person doing the hitting that matters most.
_"It's not the things he's hitting that make the difference, it's the person doing the hitting that matters most."_ Certainly it is both. Any peace sounds better with good equipment. You're lying to yourself if you say otherwise. You know, there's a reason, why good drummers play on high quality kits. Ask yourself...
I have no doubts weckl could make a garbage kit sound decent but he is playing some very expensive drums and cymbals and hardware. And you have to take mics into account as well. These drums sound amazing
I’m thankful for his dedication to this most compelling art form, which Dave took to new heights and will always be remembered as a true artist that continues to inspire. 🙏❤️☀️
It’s not just “a beat” with Weckl. There’s a song being written with a melody and harmony that’s takes form with in the beat. It’s beautiful to watch and hear!
Dave Weckls drumming know how is as vast as space. This man makes most other top level drummers look like nothing. He is naturally gifted to play exceptionally well. He is an amazing drum phenomenon.
he repeats his work a lot the same tracks but every time it sounds different and fresh! if i can play 1 procent of his skill then i am the luckyest man
so cool, so smooth, amazing light touch. if Eric Clapton would have been a drummer he'd probably have this sort of light but mighty touch. keep calm and drum on👍
Still some of the best I've heard and seen from him. He should do more to-the-piont solos with those grooves and transitions seriously! I know it was meant to demo the cymbals but this turned out to be quite the solo. Nice change from his more complex and building ones.
Great chops. Dave’s Evolution ( Orange) sticks incidentally, are great for building wrist strength and dexterity. They are heavier than most sticks. Enjoy!
55 dislikes???? why again???omg these people really dont understand what kind of craft each drummer have,,,,there's only one dave weckl and that's DAVE WECKL!!!period...
None of you think that snare is too ringy? That was the first thing I noticed. Then I scrolled through the comments and everybody seems to love the snare sound. I've seen videos where Weckl uses a snare muffler that's unlike any other snare muffler I've ever seen. I wonder why he chose not to use it for this video. I'm sure you Weckl fans will agree that he doesn't usually let his snare drum ring out so much. It's not as bad when he plays several notes on the snare, because each consecutive stroke acts as a muffler. Don't get me wrong. I've been a Weckl fan since 1988, when I went out and purchased the first Chick Corea Elektric Band recording on cassette. Great performance here, thanks for posting.
The other thing about Weckl is his reliance on double-stroke rolls around the set (coordinated with the kick)....This is contrasted with power drummers like Dennis Chambers who use single-strokes at blinding speed.
While watching Dave play some high end Sabian cymbals, I'd love to see him play with some B8 cymbals and see him rock those in a video and I'm sure he'd make that more beginner model still sound decent.
Holding the stick between the ring finger and middle finger, how is that possible? My dad told me, you are one of the best drummers in the world. Dave Weckl Chubby little drummer here
@@joshuahornsby767 Well said. Maybe Buddy had faster hands (...maybe), but speed is not the end-all, be-all measure of a drummer's ability. There are plenty of fast drummers out there. One metric to gauge a drummer's ability and creativity is to see how long it takes to get tired of watching them play. Even Buddy gets boring after a while. Never so with Dave. A true master of the instrument.
Hands down, my favorite drummer of all time. Saw him perform in the early 90s in Chick Corea's Elektric and Acoustic band. Mind blowing. Impeccable technique and fluidity.

The way hi hit the drums and cymbals!
Thanks Dave for all the inspiration !

Benny Greb.
I could listen to this man play all day
The pinnacle of drumming! The absolute master and god of drums - Mr. Dave Weckl! :)
When Bruce Lee said "be water, my friend"...this is what he was talking about.
Agree.
Ian Dwyer "Be Weckl, my friend."
Lmao ! Good one Vic...
oh yes ... oh yes
Ian Dwyer nailed it. 🤘
OMG!!!! Your sonority is unbelievable teacher weckl !!!! Always in evolution with your great gift ... Congratulations !! GOD BLESS ... From Brazil

Absolutely true!!! EVery single word.
Artistic mastery. He PLAYS the drums. He doesn't BEAT the drums. And makes it look effortless.
OMG that snare sound is the best ever and the hi hat sound is phenomenal too.
Weckl is pure class: everything he plays is so tasteful and musical.
It's a pleasure to listen to him.
This would be my dream kit.
it's too tight. and its sounds choked
It’s not too tight, and it does not sound choked. You, sir, clearly do not know what a pure, crisp, open, beautiful snare drum should sound like.
Cory W it does sound choked. open is fine, choked not so fine
Lamborghini Diablo SV 5150 it's all personal preference
This guys "Caress'...is unparalleled. few can do it 'so relaxed' and elegant, and still execute precision with the sticking and articulation.
He is brilliant and his sound is inimitable.
Truly amazing playing.. beautiful in every way! What a legend!
I'm always impressed with Dave's technical and creative abilities... there are not too many drummers that can match him today.
My good lord his drums are tuned to absolute PERFECTION
Rich T. really? I thought the snare sounded like a dented garage door
Rich T. guess the guys above have no idea what a good drumset sounds like . The snare sounds amazing and perfectly pitched to match the toms and bass. Noobs lol
Siuleo Pouesi snare wires are way too tight
Lamborghini Diablo SV 5150 how can you tell?
Jopek As I've been drumming for a long time and I've overtightened my snare wires before and that's what it sounds like

I’m thankful for his dedication to this most compelling art form, which Dave took to new heights and will always be remembered as a true artist that continues to inspire. 🙏❤️☀️
Finally the legendary video is back! Thanks!
This is what it looks and sounds like when drumming is as natural as breathing - open channel total transparency from brain neurons to hands and feet

Yes! I saw it many years ago, and I've been looking for it for years. Thank you so much.

Te amo Dave ! ese estilo unico no hay otro como vos!

He's doing all of that like it's nothing, not even sweating it. Amazing

Mi baterista favorito
Great to hear Dave taking inspiration from that beautiful snare tone from Lars Ulrich on St Anger, only tuned a little higher 👌🏻
The cleanliness...the smoothness man!
FINALLY! This video is back! I was searching for it for such a long time! Thanks so much bro :D
Great to see this again. Epic solo.
Mind boggling. He's the best
That sustain...my boy, that sustain of the entire kit sounds like heaven.

O cara manja muito de timbres. Afinação perfeita, tudo harmonizado! Yamaha é uma empresa feliz! 😁✌
