I am a massive Rush fan, and one of the greatest things I LOVE about Neil is his humility as a drummer. He would tell you that he sucks compared to these guys, an "apprentice" as he likes to say (he is, especially, a massive Bozzio and Weckl fan). At the same time, these people would say, "you're really underestimating yourself." I still feel to this day that amateur drummers do not give Neil enough credit for the time, money and expense that he put into the Buddy Rich Tribute CD's. As Modern Drummer said, although guys like Weckl and Bozzio are amazing, Neil was probably the only drummer with the record label clout to convince a label that such a project was worth investing in and releasing. And I know that he also invested some of his own money to keep the project moving forward. They also recorded those 2 volumes at a great recording studio in NYC called The Power Station that Is known for its awesome drum sound. Lastly, I feel Neil was never given proper credit for the massive gains in his playing in between his first appearance at the Buddy Rich Tribute Concert and his second appearance after he had studied extensively under Peter Erskine. I mean here is fucking Neil Peart, a multi-millionaire musician, taking classes to become better at his craft. That takes incredible humility, and for me, unlike the people that just want to piss on everyone, I felt there was a massive difference in the level of his performance between those 2 gigs. Keep in mind, he is not a jazz player by nature. So sad to see that Neil has retired, but it was inevitable. Everyone bitched and complained about his change of style in the mid-90's, but he was suffering from severe tendonitis, and he had to learn how to play the skins without it having such a negative effect on his body physically. That is the thing that no one talks about. Freddie Gruber gave us another 10-15 years of Neil behind the drum kit. You may not like the sound, but I like the Rush records, and Neil throughout his life was not playing his instrument in an ergonomic fashion. It was killing his body. It was leading him to injuries that would eventually force him to quit.
he took lessons from gruber after watching steve smith's massive improvement in his physicality and he was curious what it might do to his technique to study with him. I don't know what you mean about tendonitis being the reason. Also, he didn't change his style, he always had the same style. He couldn't help it, it was him and his personality regardless of what he did with his technique. His video from the mid 90s showed some excellent improvements in his technique though. So much more relaxed, but still the same personality musically speaking (not a bad thing for my taste).
You forgot to mention that NONE of the other drummers wrote hypnotic lyrics to nearly 40 years worth of music 🎵 a very rare Talent indeed ... Combined with fantastic syncopated drum parts a true wordsmith in all senses of the word 🙌🏻☮️✨ Absolute magic ✨
I hope people notice the respect they have between them. Some people should learn a bit of this before saying shit on youtube about a drummer who works his ass off. Its not a competition, fanboys.
Of course, style is everything. It's not measurable, It's quality. That said, you have to be not a fan to recognize weckl's is in another level. Sorry but any true musician can see his distinction, It is just see the work of all of them
Breathtaking drumming from Dave yet again, so musical, fat pocket, amazing touch and dynamics and in that format, what a musician, he'd make any cymbal sound good! :) Great video and cheers Sabian. Love your cymbals
Neil Peart to Dave Weckl "Thank you for the lesson.." It came from one of the most technical Prog Rock Drummers in the world..Dave Weckl could be the modern Bill Evans of the drums..
In one of Neil's books he states that he can think of at least "50 drummers" whom he considers worthy of the "greatest drummer" moniker. Personally, I never liked to compare musicians. Weckl would not be a good fit for Rush nor Peart in a fusion gig. Each is their own greatness for different reasons.
XDrummerSteve I also don't like comparing Musicians, but getting good compliments from someone who watched you play and from a totally different genre is surreal. From another vid, it's Dave Weckl who gave compliments to Mike Portnoy, saying "Awesome playing." I definitely agree on your last statement that "Each is their own greatness for different reason." Cheers!!
Regardless any ranking or any polls, Peart is my personal favorite drummer. And one of the biggest reasons is because he was so humble, and always - ALWAYS had a voracious appetite to keep learning. The eternal student.
Once in a lifetime occasion for Neil Peart & Dave Weckl to be in the same room talking about cymbals. Surprisingly enough, what Neil Peart & Dave Weckl have in common aside from being amazing drummers is that fact that both were former Zildjian endorsers & both have developed their own signature cymbal line from Sabian. Neil with the Paragon line & Dave with HHX Evolution & Legacy lines
I have had the pleasure of seeing these drummers perform live. I have seen Weckl with CCEB twice and I have been to three of his clinics. Weckl is a machine.
That is cool. He is so articulate and well spoken. I've seen him play numerous times live and seen his drum clinics. He is a true master. Going to see him with Chris Minh Doky tomorrow night. Yeah!!!!
Dave is more classical and traditional. Mike is a top tier rock drummer in his own rite. As great as Dave is, his “rock/ prog” music doesn’t vibe like Mikes does. Despite Dave being so incredibly diverse.
I don't like comparing drummers. Their all great for different reasons. But I have to say. If you can handle playing drums for Frank Zappa. You can handle about any situation. Terry Bozzio is way more than just a rock drummer.
Bozzio's reaction says it all. Weckl has mastery over every single element of playing. I also love Hakim, Foster, and Katche. These musicians can play sofly, loudly--even more importantly, softly and loudly at the same time.
Drummer Gods need to do more of the demos like this because it puts the missing dynamic to potential purchases hearing the cymbals played by the PLAYERS.
James Hershey Sr Paiste are an excellent cymbals! I absolutely love the Paiste Rude series! They have a pretty awesome allstar lineup of drummers, Stewart Copeland, John Bonham, Bill Bruford, Danny Carey, Dave Lombardo etc...
I like Paiste rides. I have an old one that I just love. Gotta clean it some day! Wouldn't use any other. I have a sabian thick crash all the rest are zildgians.
The holes in it make harder for fissures or microfissures to propagate troughout the cymbal, i think it is the main reason why Dave says they're stronger
Lol the only one close to the feet of dave is Bozzio, and look his attitude to him. Portnoy don't even say a word... Dave is in another level of perfection
So are cymbals with holes actually stronger than those without, as Dave implied? I think it might might make sense with energy dissipation in mind, but can anyone more acutely in the know about this sort of thing get back to me?
wow a room full of legends have respect for all of th they are drum royalty peart and portnoy are def best drummers here but blzzio and the other guy is good too
I love it how dave weckl throws out a kick as piece in only a view seconds and is barely doing any effort at all. He just completely outlevels everybody(not in the room, just in general).
weckl is a fusion drummers. fusion style needs a drummer with advanced technique. portnoy is a rock drummer and what he does is excellent fot the style
Wow. Portnoy kept his mouth shut for a change. He really knew how much he was outshined. LOL. If he keeps this up hes gonna end up like a prog version of Lars Ulrich. Sad to see.
Every drummer has their own short coming in terms of skills etc. Nothing to be ashamed off. It's good to see Mike being sincerely knew he was outshined (Like you mentioned). Everyone has to eat the humble pie once a while. Good to see Mike Portnoy's ego being suppressed this time. And that's a good thing. But i enjoy Mike's playing than Dave simply because it's much easier to listen. To each of his own.

In this series Mike played and when done Weckl gave him a compliment and you could see Mike's face get red and he hung his head a bit as if Weckl was just being kind. I'm a fan of Mike and was a DT fan for 20+ years, but I get what you're saying about his persona. Clearly he knew he was way out of his league with the likes of a Weckl in the house. Dave's one of the greatest to ever grace a kit for sure. He's my #1.
Well U never stop learning, Mike is listening to some great drummers, everyone is good at what they do, they're all great, just different Styles of drumming I respect each and everyone of those Cats.,.,
@SERCHSOS3722 Zildjian is as good as sabian, DW is much better than Yamaha, Vic Firth is really good ;) and there is Evans too for heads....i agree with you that these brands are gread but the best....NO :D! But the Drummers Dave Weckl and Neil Peart....legendary ^^... Thanks for this Vid!

Absolute magic ✨
I love Terry's compliment about how Dave sounds. Everyone sounds different on the same drums and no one sounds like Dave because of the touch he has.
I miss neil. Amazing project from sabian to join those amazing drummers to discuss sound and musical expression.
Portnoy is speechless cause he's in the room with not only master drummer but a heavyweight musician like Weckl!!
Dave is a monster. He's so groove laden and articulate.
I’ve watched this over and over and I’m still in awe how much resect these amazing drummers have for one another, no egos.
I hope people notice the respect they have between them. Some people should learn a bit of this before saying shit on youtube about a drummer who works his ass off. Its not a competition, fanboys.
+blapis89 Beautifully put!!!

You are so spot on! 👍👍
Dave Weckl just took rock stars to back school... the absolute best; no doubt.
I love rock and rock drumming, but jazz drumming is the the true school and any good rock drummer knows it.
I’ve been a drummer for around 25 years and was always a Zildjian guy but I’ve absolutely fallen in love with Sabian
This is how you're supposed to be with other drummers. They are humble with eachother and compliment one another.. no competition whatsoever
Breathtaking drumming from Dave yet again, so musical, fat pocket, amazing touch and dynamics and in that format, what a musician, he'd make any cymbal sound good! :) Great video and cheers Sabian. Love your cymbals

Dave is from another planet. Just like Virgil Donati. They don’t come around unless the mothership brings them here
Regardless any ranking or any polls, Peart is my personal favorite drummer. And one of the biggest reasons is because he was so humble, and always - ALWAYS had a voracious appetite to keep learning. The eternal student.
I love Rush Dave eats Neil for breakfast.
Once in a lifetime occasion for Neil Peart & Dave Weckl to be in the same room talking about cymbals. I believe they had the same teachers at one time as well.
@@dannybarichello1575 you are correct. Freddie Gruber
Love those videos! And here I love the finger test of Weckl especially. Great sound!
Dave Weckl is an amazing drummer!
I have had the pleasure of seeing these drummers perform live. I have seen Weckl with CCEB twice and I have been to three of his clinics. Weckl is a machine.
"Neil Ellwood Peart"
September 12, 1952 --- January 7, 2020
"A Farewell to a King"
the most beautiful videos of sabian..good times
RIP Neil Peart❤️
Amen to that Brother 🙏🏻🎯
Cant believe anyone would argue who is better. Each of these guys are great in their own way.
RIP Neil. Forever beloved
Dave Weckl + Mike Portnoy + Terry Bozzio + Neil Peart = 4 of the greatest and most legendary drummers on the planet.
Nope
Nah Thomas lang wrecks them all.
That is cool. He is so articulate and well spoken. I've seen him play numerous times live and seen his drum clinics. He is a true master. Going to see him with Chris Minh Doky tomorrow night. Yeah!!!!
I like Mike Portnoy but Dave Weckl is another different level drummer.
James Tai Dave is light years ahead of Mike.
They both are diferent drummers and play diferent styles
totally, another planet
dif. styles...
Dave is more classical and traditional. Mike is a top tier rock drummer in his own rite. As great as Dave is, his “rock/ prog” music doesn’t vibe like Mikes does. Despite Dave being so incredibly diverse.
Such class between them... pure respect.
This guy absolutely cracked the code !
An absolute master !
OMG WHAT GOD PUT THESE PPL IN THE SAME ROOM! thanks!
too much epicness to handle
TOO MUCH!!!
Water got nothing on Weckl's fluidity. One of the best ever.
Awesome comments Mike, your opinion was unique!
Best demo in the series.Dave? How are you not burnt out.
I don't like comparing drummers. Their all great for different reasons. But I have to say. If you can handle playing drums for Frank Zappa. You can handle about any situation. Terry Bozzio is way more than just a rock drummer.
yeah! his playing on the Brecker Bros' Heavy Metal Bebop album is epic for me. Cheers!
Bozzio's reaction says it all. Weckl has mastery over every single element of playing. I also love Hakim, Foster, and Katche. These musicians can play sofly, loudly--even more importantly, softly and loudly at the same time.
Ver a Terry Bozzio, Neil Peart, Dave Weckl y a Mike Portnoy (disculpen por el último quien no sé quien es) es increíble, sin palabras
Dave Weckl and Virgil Donati…it doesn’t get better! Mt. Everest!
Es terry bozio
the audience of 4 utterly blown away by the best drummer on the planet
Thanks for the response.. had my doubts about the longevity of that sort of cymbal, but maybe I'll think twice now!
I can’t count how many times I have watched this video.
what happened to the full version of dave´s playing? is it still on youtube? thanks
“I’m a big component of splash cymbals.”
Proponent, Dave.
This makes me happy :D
So many legend
When Neil Peart says "Thanks for the lesson" you are the best of the best. Dave is simply 3 tiers above the crowd.
I WANT THAT RIDE CYMBAL!!!!!!
SABIAN, Yamaha, Vic Firth and Remo... best brands ever!
For a second he sounds like he's mocking Mark Love hahaha, insanely beautiful playing.
That kit is beautiful
Drummer Gods need to do more of the demos like this because it puts the missing dynamic to potential purchases hearing the cymbals played by the PLAYERS.
4 best drummers of history!
Dave weckl is the best drummer ever...
You spelled "Vinnie Colaiuta" wrong.
nice playing. i like it.
Deus abencoe os engenheiros da sabian ...show de pratos e é claro , so bateristas de primeira
@85Aheadstix You go and do whatever you like, all the drummers in that room are living legends. End of story.
all great players.
Ar those the natural finish HHX click hats? Or the brilliant finish?
I'm a Paiste man myself,I would love to hear these guys playing some Signature series by Paiste.
For me , Dave is the boss
30 seconds into the video and Neil is giving the teacher a lesson. I cracked up.
The holes in it make harder for fissures or microfissures to propagate troughout the cymbal, i think it is the main reason why Dave says they're stronger
This vid is amazing
Wow! Three of the greatest drummers ever in the same room. Neil Peart, Terry Bozzio and Mike Portnoy.
And they all just got a lesson from Dave. :)
What you really mean is three of the greatest drummers listening and commenting on a
"Master" drummer Dave Weckl!!!!
Lol the only one close to the feet of dave is Bozzio, and look his attitude to him. Portnoy don't even say a word... Dave is in another level of perfection
Dave who? Never heard of him. And I've been listening to music for nearly 50 years.
Diêgo S Gonsalves The only reason Portnoy is speechless is because he is sitting next to his hero.
What possibly could he add to this conversation of intellectual minds.
Style cannot be compared, but quality CAN. People can for sure make a judgement that who is the best drummer in this video.
This is literally the Jedi high council of drummers \m/
These guys are the most famous drummers in the world. But as a player, Weckl is on a whole other level
Amazing guys!!! Geekieng up on their free toys LoL!
When I die this is the heaven I wish to be in!
Aero Crash is amazing!
@85Aheadstix Go ahead and hold on to your opinion. My opinion is he's a great musician.
So are cymbals with holes actually stronger than those without, as Dave implied? I think it might might make sense with energy dissipation in mind, but can anyone more acutely in the know about this sort of thing get back to me?
Where are the rest of the videos showing Dave's playing? Only 8 seconds in this one and that's not nearly enough if I do say so myself.
I agree with everything Mike Portnoy had to say here.
LOL
Stunned silence
That splash..^_^ Sigh..Wish Ii have those cymbals..:/
In due time..:D
that kit and whole set up is smexy
You mean Nobody plays like Dave Weckl ?, you are right ! ))
Whoa man I hope they make that 20" Zen China - Being in the market for a new china right now I'd have to say, no joke, I'd buy one tomorrow.
@KonigAgro Well in my opinion they are the best. I prefer these as you prefer those. Each one thinks different :D
I think he was talking about Tony Braunagel:P
@thomaslejon obviously ;)
What ride is that?
wow a room full of legends have respect for all of th they are drum royalty peart and portnoy are def best drummers here but blzzio and the other guy is good too
wow this proves to me that Dave is the best of all time and Portnoy was so quite. but nice video.
What hats are those?
14' HHX Click Hats
I love it how dave weckl throws out a kick as piece in only a view seconds and is barely doing any effort at all. He just completely outlevels everybody(not in the room, just in general).
Lol, I was just saying there might be someone out there who has that touch of Weckl out there too :3
I love all these drummers, but Weckl,...wow, man!! He's not from this planet.
why don't you put the whole performance? every drummer would appreciate it... really
weckl is a fusion drummers. fusion style needs a drummer with advanced technique. portnoy is a rock drummer and what he does is excellent fot the style
They forgot to invite me =p
@Suprematista Even though Bozzio would kick his arse in everyway.
Portnoy does not have the same baggage as the other guys, but he is very good
You know... cause... you know... you know.
Dave Weckl everyone.
PHX BABY!
is it just me or does neil look like dave Matthews in this clip
IAN PAICE is, by far, THE BEST FOR SWINGING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow. Portnoy kept his mouth shut for a change. He really knew how much he was outshined. LOL. If he keeps this up hes gonna end up like a prog version of Lars Ulrich. Sad to see.
He's just being humble.
Portnoy humble? Oh boy.
And that's a good thing. you guys should try to get jojo to demo some.
Thanks for this Vid!
yeah, like it should be Mr. Weckl LEADING.
Finally someone who understands that haha
wow a room
