  • Looking at the status of ZILLA™ and the 1998 GODZILLA® and explaining how Toho didn't quite rechristen the TriStar version.
    To summarize: the 1998 Godzilla is still GODZILLA® and it is, technically, a different character from ZILLA™, although the latter is very obviously based on the former. From 2004 onward, any future appearances of the TriStar "Godzilla®" will be under the name "Zilla™"!

    The movie was ok as a typical monster movie, but as a Godzilla movie, it felt like it didn't even try to be like the namesake besides the roar.
    Godzilla The Series was really good tho.

      Eh, not really. There's no stakes in the movie, no reason to be afraid; the characters clearly don't take it seriously, so why should we?
      And there's also the fact that, you know, it's a ripoff of Jurassic Park and Aliens with the name Godzilla slapped on and a fucking idiotic ending.

    Honestly, I liked the cartoon show that followed the movie. And when the name change was official, I eventually started to be alright with the monster. It's not his fault that he was mistaken for Godzilla by late 90's American reporters.
    Zilla on his own, without leeching onto the "Godzilla" name, is alright in my eyes. He's grown into his own creature, so it's all water under the bridge. (Too soon?)

      I think Zilla Jr. in the cartoon was legit. He was durable, had proper atomic breath, could clearly make moral choices and kept the burrowing ability of his parent. Overall, a pretty cool monster, with a fun cast of supporting characters.

    Welcome all, to ZILLA MONTH - we'll be making videos commemorating the 20th anniversary of the TriStar film's release, including a kaiju profile for the '98 Godzilla and Zilla soon.
    *If you have any questions regarding the status of GODZILLA (1998) and Zilla, don't hesitate to ask.*
    • TL;DR: Zilla is technically a different character from the 1998 Godzilla, whose name remains Godzilla. However, from 2004 onward, Toho's been insistent on labeling any further appearances of the '98 Godzilla as ZILLA.

    I actually really like the 1998 Godzilla/Zilla design, even though the move wasn’t the best. The animated series was lit though. I have yet to have found anyone who likes the design, though I feel as though it could have been more powerful.

      In some respects I like the design more as it's more realistic looking. Though I like the original design for the opposite reasons too (ie how such a fantastical creature could exist). As a result I think they should be separated from each other and arguably should have been from the start.

      Cameron C. I agree completely. Both designs are great. I really like the 1998 Godzilla/Zilla design because it seems more realistic, though as you said, the normal Godzilla design is great for the opposite reasons. The 1998 Godzilla/Zilla should have been a separate creature or entity in the first place. If they had done so, it would have probably been better received in the community.

    So I was right, because when I heard about Final Wars and that Emmerich's take on Godzilla was renamed "Zilla" in that film, I assumed that he was renamed "Zilla" to avoid confusion between him and the true Godzilla.

    Zilla as a monster in and of itself, I like. Is it GODzilla? HELL NO. But the monster does have it's merits as it's own creature. Although if ANY version of Zilla deserves the title of Godzilla it's "God"Zilla Jr. From the animated series. That iteration actually combined the best of what Zilla had, then amped it with traits from the true monster king. I like how the monster was handled in the cartoon series and in the IDW comics and even the Godzilla Anime-verse. Zilla as a whole may not deserve the "god" part of the name, but at least it's child does and even as it's own monster it's not the worst thing to have ever happened. Gabara and Minilla....those ARE the worst. Zilla isn't even CLOSE to being THAT bad.

      gaaraofthedesert801 I agree 100%. I loved Zilla jr in the animated series

    • @legionbeast
      @legionbeast 6 лет назад +13

      I completely agree.
      The hatred of Zilla comes from the fact that it was called Godzilla, but it's abilities and cornerstone traits were completely different from Godzilla. As all the interviews said, it wasn't the looks, per se, but the fact that it had no atomic breath and no impervious hide. Zilla has many traits that make it very unique and a welcome addition to Toho's monster roster, but it's very clearly not Godzilla. Zilla is closer to the Beast from 20,000 fathoms in that it was "a creature lost in our world" and could be wounded by conventional weapons.
      To clarify: If I made a movie called "Godzilla" and the main creature in the film walked on all fours, had a long neck, and projected electricity from it's body, but every time it does so the monster kills it's self more and the end of the film has the military shoot it with a radioactive isotope and it dies of radiation poisoning, you'd probably wonder what sort of drugs I was on. The truth is, I just made a movie that mirrored "The Giant Behemoth", but I labeled it "Godzilla" to cash in on the namesake.

      King Goji yet got the shit kicked out of him by Kamacuras and Gabara? At least Zilla in the IDW comics stood toe to toe with the monster king. And Zilla Jr. is still a thing. Minilla looks like the result of the Pillsbury Dough Boy getting it on with Barney that blows smoke rings....oooooo... so scarey XD

  • @megamegaO
    @megamegaO 6 лет назад +37

    Strangely enough this was my 1st knowledge of Godzilla....then I saw a Godzilla game come out "destroy all monsters" and I was like...why does he look different...who are these other monsters, whoa they shoot beams? They're huge compared to the buildings....then I got internet...and I learned who the true king was. Afterwards I went to my local library and they had nearly all of the movies...I rented them...and the rest is history. Zilla will always have a space in my heart....98' pretty much introduced me to the franchise....and I'd been in love with it. Since I was a huge fan of PR and how they would fight weekly giant monsters...Godzilla was perfect....and now America finally gave the king the justice is deserved. 2014.

      Some hate it, others don't, it's just the way it is. I think a large part of the animosity from some fans is how Emmerich was described as acting rather smug about the whole thing - claiming that his was better and all that.
      I like the monster but it made it's debut in a very flawed entry to the franchise. I'm hoping they do change it's name and reboot it in the future. Just anything to give it a name with meaning that can carry respect cuz Zilla just doesn't cut it. As long as it carries this stigma- I'm sorry fans of Godzilla 98 but Zilla will always be a jobber.

      Same here. He may be a terrible version of Godzilla (if you can even call it that), but as its own character its pretty interesting. The fact that it can reproduce that rapidly is terrifying, and the design of the creatures body perfectly emphasizes its speed and maneuverability. He looks like a giant mutant version of Jurassic Park’s velociraptors, and the similarities are really obvious in the babies. A kaiju version of the JP raptors is definitely not something I would want to go up against. He’s a different kind of monster than Godzilla, fast and highly mobile, as opposed to strong and durable.

    So pretty much Zilla is the rebranded godzilla 1998. Making them the "same character" so unlike distinct characters like kiryu and mechagodzilla which look DISTINCTLY SIMILAR, Zilla's minor changes make it essentially the same character. Depending on how you want to semantically look at it.

      Zilla is only trademarked under the name for appearances post 2004.
      Technically, the original 1998 monster falls under the classification and trademark of the original Toho monster, since they share the name.

    Zilla and Godzilla are two of the most misunderstood monsters in history. Godzilla (the original) is a symbol of American military power. An unstoppable, heavily armored, radiation spewing beast that is coming for you... like America during WW2 as we approached Japan. It wouldn't make sense on a symbolic level to have Godzilla attack New York. Why would the symbol of American military might attack America after all? Zilla, on the other hand, is a symbol of Vietnamese tactics. Rather than unstoppable power, he's smart. He knows he can't take you head on so he uses his speed, agility, and burrowing techniques to gain the advantage... like the Vietnamese did. That stupid Zilla vs Godzilla battle completely bastardized and misunderstood the character of Zilla. Attacking head-on? Way to ignore everything about his design and philosophy.
    Godzilla is the monster Americans wanted even if it didn't make sense on a philosophical level. Zilla is the monster America deserved, the boogy-monster we feared after our failure in Vietnam.

    Yes, let us *CELEBRATE* Zilla's birthday and the 20th anniversary of his film *INSTEAD* of tearing both of them apart like a pack of *rabid DOGS.* And please, for the love of GOD, let us all be *CIVIL, INTELLIGENT, LEVEL-HEADED, MATURE* human beings here, Godzilla AND Zilla fans alike! Let's *NOT* rip each other apart (again, like rabid dogs) over this Kaiju and his movie! 😠😡
    I say that because from looking at some of the comments/threads here, *immature flame wars/arguments* about Zilla/1998 are STILL going on, *unfortunately.* 😔 Wikizilla, I hope you're aware of this.

      Hey, I only hate the monster when they call him Godzilla. I like him as a separate character. I loved the decision to bring him back as a new monster. That’s what he should have been all along: a separate kaiju with his own origin and abilities. He’s basically a giant, mutant kaiju version of JP’s velociraptors. Who wouldn’t love a kaiju like that? He’s not Godzilla, but he definitely isn’t a terrible movie monster.

      Megalodon You again? Sigh. 😔 Alright, look, I want you to know I *truly do* respect how and why you feel that way about Zilla. But if you watched this whole video, *despite* what you think the Kaiju should have been all along, the legalities of this whole situation have dictated that one version will be called Zilla, and another will be known as...well, you know.

    • @velociraptor4you3291
      @velociraptor4you3291 6 лет назад +3

      Megalodon Look, I *do* like that you like Zilla as his own Kaiju. And you know what, so do I. 😊
      But does that mean that *I* have to hate the 1998 movie? *NO.* 😠 Understand? I *DON'T* want to change my opinion on "Godzilla 1998," and I *don't* want *anyone else* to try to *force* me to hate it. *Let me be entitled to my own personal opinion about "Godzilla 1998," DON'T force your opinion, and RESPECTFULLY DISAGREE with me like a MATURE person,* please.
      I'm not being condescending to you. No. So please don't take this as such.
      I am just seriously *sick & tired* of 1998-hating G-Fans trying to force me to hate the movie.
      All I want is for people to please let me be entitled to my own personal opinion about it, respectfully disagree with, and leave it alone.
      Am I making myself *EXPLICITLY* clear to you? I really hope I am.

    • @velociraptor4you3291
      @velociraptor4you3291 6 лет назад +2

      Megalodon *WE. ALL. HAVE. DIFFERENT. OPINIONS.* OK? *WE ALL HAVE DIFFERENT OPINIONS. And "Godzilla 1998" is seriously NO exception to that, and it will NEVER be an exception to that.*
      I feel maybe if I put it in big bold words like that, you'll actually understand. It appears to me you fail to understand how opinions on things work. *No offense.*
      So could you please understand and accept that?

    • @velociraptor4you3291
      @velociraptor4you3291 6 лет назад +2

      Megalodon Again, it's comforting for me to know that you do like Zilla as his own separate Kaiju (I truly do as well).
      But you need to know that when it comes to Zilla and his respective debut film, each and every one of us is going to have a different opinion on the film alone. There's always going to be a group of people out there who are going to seriously love "Godzilla 1998 (and I personally will be a part of that group)," and there is also always going to be a group of people out there (you included) who are going to hate it. And that's seriously OK with me, we all have different opinions on things.
      I just hope you realize that, and I hope there's no hard feelings.

      @@Xenosaurian This is in response to both of your comments: I already KNOW that. I call the character as a whole 'Zilla' for two reasons: 1) because I want to be respectful toward G-Fans who hate the character to where they want to distance him from the 'Godzilla' name as much as possible, and 2) because it personally helps me distinguish him from the original Big G by calling him the name that Toho gave in in 2004.

    • @Xenosaurian
      @Xenosaurian 4 года назад +2

      @@velociraptor4you3291 My response to that would be (1) I don't think succumbing to the wills of the haters will do much good and in my experience it never really does and (2) this seems odd because it would seemingly be equally as easy to distinguish him from any other incarnation of Godzilla by simply referring to him as Godzilla '98 just like you would refer to Godzilla '84 or any other incarnation in a similar manner and I bet you don't refer to Mechagodzilla '74 as Kiryu just because it's a simpler name. I don't understand why we can't just refer to characters with their actual names rather than the names of other related characters and thereby add to all the unnecessary confusion and debate. It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

The animated series had a far superior depiction in the form of its vastly more powerful son, the comics differentiated it from the traditional Godzilla nicely, even Planet of the Monsters had a neat depiction/continuity nod in supplementary materials.
