Have you published a book? How much did it cost? ...and what did you spend your money on? Comment below! To learn more about this, we have a more in-depth guide available here: self-publishingschool.com/FreeClass
I used Published and Book Launch to publish my book and my costs were pretty low. I did pay someone to format my book and that was $126. I used a large panel of people to edit my book so that was free. I used my launch team to do this.
I'm out of my league...dollar wise. I'll just write the story and put it in my grandson's picture scrapbook. He can read it to his kids after I'm long gone. Thanks for the heads up!
Don't let lack of money stop you. You can google how to do anything for free. You can work with your grandson to help you find and do things. You can write it in a word processor and turn it into an eBook by saving it as a PDF you can send to friends and family. You can set up an author blog for free. You can find free or inexpensive courses on how to do illustrating and get editing done, and how to do marketing. Bella is talking about strategies to increase your odds of making money publishing your book. Publishingschool provides affordable rates for people who want to launch their book as a business. And you can read their blog for free to learn more do-it-yourself tips.
Yeah, don't give up on it. One thing that I found helpful is using the envelope method (I discovered this on my own, and then later discovered that other people were doing it with a name). Just putting a set amount of money aside in an envelope that's locked away or hidden somewhere. I did $50 per payday. I'm not doing more - because I got raises at work over time. Like the poster above said, it takes some looking - but you can find all kinds of things for free or low cost. I've heard there's a website where you can run a contest for your cover art, and the winner is the person you pay whatever the prize was (which obviously can be low since you're just starting). I know that it's a year or more past the time of the post, and we're in a COVID-19 world - but taking a writing class can take the place of an editor with a good teacher and classmates. You'll workshop your writing and get feedback from other students and the teacher. I once sent an editor an email and explained that I'd been going over the stories over time, and they'd all been workshopped... she said "I'm not sure what you need an editor for, then..." You can do be working on the above while saving what you can over time. My guess is that you probably still have some things to do to prepare your book - and that's time you can be putting small amounts of money aside... and when you're ready... do as much for yourself or as cheap as you can. Hell, when it's completely done, you can probably run a GoFundMe or something. No point in giving up.
Trying to find out how much it actually costs is a bit like trying to nail jello to the wall. There are others who say that you can self-publish, at least in ebook form, essentially cheap or free, if you use a word processing/layout software, software such as Grammerly for proofreading, etc. but even if you can use such options to publish "on the cheap" you still spend a lot in time, which this video acknowledges as the major expense in any case, no matter what choices you make, because if you choose the cheap/free options, you have to do such things as formatting your book yourself. These days, there are a lot of services that offer to format your book, edit your book, promote your book-for a price. If you have the money to spend these services are probably worth it in the sense that they save you precious time and might be able to help you produce a book that looks better and is marketed/promoted better than you might be able to accomplish on your own, depending upon your level of expertise.
Thanks for sharing good info. This was very helpful. No, I didn't guess the biggest cost for self-publiching. I figured that because of so many variables as you stated it's not very predictable. Each author's project, need, approach or desire is so different from another that costs vary widely. Nonetheless, your point of the greatest expense as being TIME SPENT is well taken. One cost however, that I didn't hear or see mentioned was the actual printing costs of the book. Might be a good idea to budget for that too. Another cost that I also didn't see or hear covered is the expense of your SPS programs to assist a budding author in navigating their project towards success. Could you comment on that also, please?
Hi Walter! Printing costs through self-publishing is more rounded up in what you'll MAKE while self-publishing as the process of printing is done through a separate fulfillment company (Amazon or IngramSpark). Though roughly, if you want to buy your own copies at-cost, it would range between $3-$6 on average (though it depends on the size of your book, etc.). As for the cost of Self-Publishing School, we recommend first checking out our webinar and then scheduling time to discuss this with one of our success strategists :) (free training can be foudn here: www.self-publishingschool.com/FreeTraining
2021 watch: I finished my first draft, and the biggest expense was buying and eighth of marijuana ever other week which amounted to $240 per month for four months.($960). I plan on spending less for an editor.($500:fiver)
A Breakdown: left out a lot of information, 1.uploading book a. Kindle direct publishing b. KDP print now ( paper books cant be pre Ordered) c. Ingram Spark, to get book on all publishing platforms. It is a whole sale distributor who makes books available for al retailers. 2.ISBN number, every format has to have its own ISBN. a. hard cover b. soft cover c. e book d. audio book 3. Copy wrights etc, etc
Chandler Bolt - The 7-Figure Principles Show it’s going great!! i’ve written most of it, and i went back and re-edited the way curtains stanzas went, but overall good!
I published a book before taking this course. It didn't cost much at all, but also there was no marketing, so I didn't sell many. Now getting ready to publish my 2nd book with the help of SPS and I expect it will make a lot more money! Can't wait!
Biggest cost: time, absolutely! I’d say a close second is printing the actual book. I just read chandler bolts Published, and it doesn’t speak about printing costs or how to do that. are we expected to only have e-copies? Thoughts?
Hey Shayna! No, because the printing costs come out of your cut if you publish on Amazon. Unlike traditional publishing houses, self-published authors (publishing on Amazon, anyway) don't have to pay out-of-pocket for their books unless you're paying for proof copies, which can run $3-$7 depending on your book's length/if you choose hardcover. Otherwise, you don't pay anything for copies when others buy. The cost simply comes out immediately from the buyer. Therefore, the only cost to think about is how much to price your book if you want to make a certain amount per book. Does that help?
Self Publishing School Well, the one that should be the most obvious. 😂 Finding a professional in the areas of cover and editing. I know a lot of people and assumed I could just use them. While that’s not a bad thing, my book is a reflection of me. I don’t want it to just be something that might look “thrown together”.
Very helpful content. This is so exiting!! I am just inspired to now state my WHY and get started, but the costs are quite huge but I trust it will be good. I am jumping in no matter. Yes, I need quality. I hate substandard work. Thank you Miss Pope for sharing. Bravo!
Working on a children's picture book right now, so editing will be somewhat less, but add back in for illustrations! Thanks - great to have a ballpark idea!!
What about needing to protect your writings either by Trademark or Copyright? What if you hire an editor or something to help and they steal your book idea?
Hey there! your work is copyrighted once you write it, but if you want to take precautionary measure prior to publication, you can get your book copyrighted. We've got a blog post teaching you how to do it: self-publishingschool.com/how-to-copyright-a-book/#copyright It's about $85 and your work is legally protected :) hope that helps!
did you buy a seperate ISBN and also use any amazon ads? Those are 2 areas with KDP i could see still needing investment (i'm looking at doing my first with KDP soon).
Uploading to amazon is free - so really you're only paying for Amazon to take royalties when people buy books. Most people will pay for companies or services to help them know HOW to upload to Amazon effectively so that you do sell books. The price for that depends on the company
I didn't guess that it was time but that makes sense. What's that old saying --- of the three qualities, fast, good and cheap, you can only have two of them...:).
Hey! The point of this video is to give you the general costs of all that goes into publishing a book. Because what you choose and their prices depend, there isn't a set number for each book or person. Therefore, we can't give you a specific dollar amount, because it varies greatly.
It cost none when you use their resources. It can cost miminum of 1,000 to get started but a minimum of 5 thousand to finish it through in 90 days with time, effort and hard work.
My biggest expense- as the best selling author of 2 books- is my house where I write! Haha! :D But seriously, great editors are my biggest writing expense- but SO worth it.

This is phenomenal advice! Writing my fifth book now!
Way to go that is so awesome!!

Sounds like a clear, down to earth set of directions to anticipate the costs of publishing.
25k for seven novels. That's how much its going to cost me. 😕
Thank you so much!! This was so helpful and really got me on the route to writing my poetry book!
How is your writing going?
Chandler Bolt - The 7-Figure Principles Show it’s going great!! i’ve written most of it, and i went back and re-edited the way curtains stanzas went, but overall good!

The video is astounding in that it shows schooling procedure in the publishing area.
Working on a children's picture book right now, so editing will be somewhat less, but add back in for illustrations! Thanks - great to have a ballpark idea!!
thank you so much for sharing about the cost of publishing a book. I didn't realize how much it would cost to get my book published.
Thanks for the info, I'm not close to a book yet but I am keeping note of this for when it does happen and it will.
super helpful breakdown of editor's services and the corresponding costs.
I love Bella's advice. Great video.
You're so welcome Miranda! Which bit was most helpful to you?

I self published my books on KDP on Amazon and did everything myself so it didn’t cost me anything but my time.
did you buy a seperate ISBN and also use any amazon ads? Those are 2 areas with KDP i could see still needing investment (i'm looking at doing my first with KDP soon).
I can't believe how long it takes! 3 years I better get started! Scrivener or grammarly?
Biggest cost I think, would be promoting and marketing a book.
That all depends on what you want to do for promotion. You CAN spend a lot on ads and such, but that's not always necessary for marketing a book.
Hi, What about Printing? How much does it cost?
I believe we can help you on this. 🤝😀

i like the step by step plan and many of us can't afford the standard route
Great information, Thanks!
You're welcome! Thanks for stopping by :)
Thanks for comparing both the money and time costs.
You should have a transcription of what will be mentioned in the video, people don’t want to sit around not knowing what to anticipate in such videos.

Professionals are essential if you want to be seen as a professional author for sure :)

Could I let my mom, who is an English teacher, edit my book?
We wouldn't recommend it unless she has professional editing experience. Editors are more than just punctuation/grammar. They have expert knowledge about the structure/content and overall intent of a book as well as those other little details
