      Yes, you cannot use Canva Elements free or pro or anything for Amazon KDP. People lost their accounts over that so it is better not to risk it.
      Also that note you read you can use elements for POD, yes, but then they add additional info you must overlap every element with your own unique graphics so everything that involves using an element from Canva where your element is not on top, means it is not allowed.

      Thank you so much for posting this! I have been thinking about going the KDP route simply because of the reach but I was bothered by a potential future copyright issue for an image I was using on the cover. I have been a Pro Canva user for nearly 3 years and have read through everything mentioned, but as you said, the missing link was while I spent a lot of time creating this, could I legally/in good faith check the box that I owned the copyright for a print-on-demand product? You answered that in this video. Thank you for all of the research you did for us!

    Honestly Ivy this was the clearest and most concise video on this topic I’ve seen. As an KDP publisher, there is absolute panic out there among some publishers that using Canva is forbidden. I reposted your video to help others understand the real story. Thanks again for this high quality content.

      @@ivyhang5084 Interestingly I’m getting pushback still from others. Question, is it your feeling that if we create a cover with multiple elements layered for our cover that we then can claim copyright, or did I misunderstand. I have had Canva Pro for years.

    Thank you, Ivy - from the bottom of my heart. There are so many guidelines on Amazon KDP and you’ve just highlighted the most crucial info. I’m sure the copyright stuff is a constant worry for all of us. What I like best about your video is the part on “I own the copyright . . .” on Amazon KDP and your explanation. I love using Canva - I moved from Book Bolt to Canva recently. Book Bolt has a great research and guideline section on niches and related matters. However, they lack in graphics and images. Also, most often I had emails from KDP that margins are out or images on book-covers are out of alignment. I have none of these issues with Canva. Thanks again 🙏 I look forward to watching more of your videos and learning from them.

    I cannot thank you enough for combing through the fine print and explaining it to those of us that get tangled up with this information in a way that we can understand it clear as day. For me personally, I have a ton of planner ideas floating in my head. I've had them for a long time but every time I got to trying to understand what I can and can't do, it becomes intimidating and I just don't start. My goal is to be able to support my family while also being present with them and working towards generating passive income by selling a product I truly use (I made and printed at home my own planner) can eventually get me there. The single reason why I haven't started is the legal stuff behind it (even if one person ever buys it, I never want/can afford to get into legal sticky situations) and now I get it. Sorry for the long comment. Just wanted to say thank you. Even when fine print like this seems to make sense, theres always some doubt that theres a trick or something in there but I get it now and now I can really dive into creating what I've started and stopped creating many times. THANK YOU!

    Thank you so much for this video! I just watched a different one where someone said they knew someone who got their KDP account terminated because they used Canva elements in their designs. My guess is someone didn't edit it ie layered different designs to create a new design etc. and that's why. This video explains it so clearly and the fact you double checked with Amazon was just the icing on the cake. Again, thank you so much! 🙂

    • @MarinaArtDesign
      @MarinaArtDesign Месяц назад

      Double check with Amazon? Amazon agent doesn't know the rules Canva gives to elements. She guided Agents reply with her message. And yes, people lost their accounts because they used Canva and it was not because of standalone use or not overlapping. It is because Canva stated officially in their video you can't use Canva graphics for Amazon KDP last year in May and for some reason people keep looking for others to tell them differently even after Canva told it is not allowed.

    You nailed it to the point with clarity. As you said none of us can ever own design elements since we dont make them from scratch. What we do is , create a unique desing using these elements for which we pay pro lisence to canva . Basic thing is cut & paste method will put you in trouble. If you are there on cenva to download someone's else work then you will face termination

But recently, I saw that 2 of the composition books were blocked, and this morning I got an email that my account was terminated for copyright issues. I had multiple elements on all of the designs like you recommended, and all of them were different from each other. I don't understand where I went wrong. Thanks for any input.

      I'm so sorry to hear - did all your books including your coloring book and composition books all get blocked? Were you using Canva graphics for this or other source of graphics? Sometimes it could be your book title too, that happens to be the same as someone else or an existing book, and that could trigger copyright issues (not just graphic issues). I would recommend contacting KDP support via their live chat to see if they are able to provide more details on what the issue is. Hope you are able to get it resolved!

    Great video! I have several books I was working on using Canva and shelved them all when the Canva crisis started. I searched for all the latest info hoping there was a loophole or hope of all my work not being for waste but the conclusion was always a no go. I gave it all up thinking maybe one day I could devote energy into illustrating myself but recently your video popped up :) My question still is what about all the accounts that have been canceled without warning due to copywrite issues from people who (claim to have) used Canva appropriately?

    • @ivyhang5084
      @ivyhang5084  5 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks for your kind comment and glad you found this video informative! :) Regarding your question, I think there are many different reasons why people are experiencing blocked books or suspended accounts. In my experience as long as you are leveraging Canva and your creativity to create something truly unique, then the chances of that happening to you should be low. The other suggestion I have is to also check USPTO website to make sure any book title you come up with is not already trademarked by someone else to lower the chances of copyright issues coming up. All the best!

    So, in the case I use "Magic Media" (Ki-generated photos in Canva) all these rules apply too (for Amazon KDP?). I was interested in creating content with Canva, still using MidJourney for Amazon KDP to create illustrations.

    • @ivyhang5084
      @ivyhang5084  Месяц назад

      Yes, I would apply the same logic to Magic Media, although those ones technically are less concerning because it is generating a unique image each time. However, I generally ensure I don't use one image in isolation to ensure there wouldn't be any issues. Hope this helps!

  • @RyanMcNeal2
    @RyanMcNeal2 9 месяцев назад

    Thank you very much for your in depth topic approach. There might be another scenario, your input would be highly appreciated. You use content (elements from Canva) in an "unique design" and discover that K DP is stating that the one of your image/images "contain content (text and/or images) that’s widely available on the web". That means I have to check every element not to be "used widely on the web, which make the process very difficult because: 1. I don't have the necessary tools to state "reasonably" that is not used widely and 2. given the fact that as you said you receive a license and not the copyright, multiple ppl might use it. That means that in order to be reasonably in compliance with KDP you need to start creating your own illustrations :( or ask for a full copyrights if you outsource. Any thoughts on that? Thank you in advance!

    • @ivyhang5084
      @ivyhang5084  9 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you for your question and while it is a possible scenario I haven’t personally experienced that. I think given the number of canva elements there are available , and if you creatively layer them to make a unique design then it is unlikely that there would be any issues where your design are flagged as being widely available on the internet, but if you are concerned then I think hiring an illustrator may be a good option as well :)

    A few questions;
    If i then use the free elements uniquely and creatively, from thile understanding you have, it would mean i cannot say i have copyright of my book right? It seemed yes canva responded to was for purchased elements used creatively and uniquely.

Have you done a video on ChatGPT? Whether or not we can check that box? Nancy.

      The free elements, each time you generate it it will already come with a license for you to use it (even if you don't have a paid/ pro account). Where as the pro elements (ones with the crown) you will need a paid/ pro membership or you would need to pay per use in order to have the appropriate license. Hope that helps!

    I used Pro Canva to design my book. Don't use images nor templates. Used elements like shapes, editing of third party AI generated illustrations & the text. Sometime said recently their book was flagged for using the Pro text fonts...have you heard of this & any thoughts? 1st time publishing attempt, what happens when they flag or dont approve your book? Do they break down what all needs changed to get approved? I'm so nervous & overwhelmed 😵‍💫 not even to the KDP publishing part.

      When you upload and they block the upload, they will usually tell you the reason (most of the time it is because they think your book title is misleading or your margins are off). There will always be a reason provided, and if not, you can also contact Amazon KDP support directly and they will be able to guide you to resolve the error/ issue so you can publish your book :)

I went through the copyrights video as well but i am still confused - My daughter has done all the illustrations herself and written it as well. To get the digital version i used paid CHAT GPT to help me generated the entire book and illustrations based on all her original drawings and story narration. Later i used free version of canva just to insert the text and add little square elements for corrections. Will i land into any trouble if i check the box on amazon kdp that you had shown ? hoping for a response as i am just a beginner and have no idea on this.

    Thanks for all the information Ivy! I have a question about the images. If I use many small standalone pro canva images, let's say one next to each other or spread over a book page, do I have to edit each small picture as well to be able to use it? Because I do not know if in that case it's okay since all the small standalone pictures are part of a whole in the page. Hope you understand me. Thanks in advance!

    • @ivyhang5084

      Thanks for your comment and for your question! I would say if you are using multiple images on the same page to create a unique page, then you are fine. It is primarily an issue if you just take one image and slap it on the cover of a book/ interior, etc. Basically the more unique you can make your page, the better :)

    I love this video and want to clarify for my understanding. You can create and alter to make your own creation, and publish that. However you don't truly have the copyright because you weren't the original designer of those elements. So are we able to copyright our "new" that we altered and made a new creation?

    • @ivyhang5084
      @ivyhang5084  8 месяцев назад

      You would technically have the copyright to the overall book that you publish, but those rights would be subject to the third party rights for the underlying elements you used. Since you have the license to use the underlying elements, you won't run into any issues for using them as long as you modify them for your overall design, however, it also means that you won't have exclusive rights to use those underlying elements and there could potentially be other books that leverage the same graphic elements as you as I have shown in this video. Hope this helps. This is just based on my personal understanding and research, however, if you have more specific questions regarding this, I would recommend engaging a copyright lawyer to be sure :)

  • @LisabettaMedaglia

    So, I've a dream of making my own crochet pattern book - all of the graphics/photos will be mine, and I just wanted to use Canva for the page layout (ex.: I have a colourful square in one corner, the layout automatically sets where the title is, where the writing goes, etc.). Would that be something that would be Ok to do as a self-published book on Amazon? Or would that be something I'd need to ask Cava about? Or, maybe it would be better if I can figure out a layout on my own, which I'm sure I can figure out somehow, using LibreOffice or something.

    Can you put several Canva elements together to make one graphic and trademark the new combine graphic as a whole?

    • @ivyhang5084
      @ivyhang5084  7 месяцев назад +1

      I don't believe you can trademark the elements unfortunately. There is actually a specific prohibition from Canva on using the elements for purposes of a trademarked logo, for example. Reason is because, let's say if you use a rhino element for your logo, and you add other elements/ texts. Someone else who has canva can still use the same rhino for their logo too. So neither of you would be able to trademark that logo because none of you have exclusive rights to the rhino element which is the main element of that logo. This is just my interpretation based on what I've read, but best to consult a copyright/ trademark lawyer if you need an official response :)

    Hi, thanks for a great video. I am a member of a group where the leader says we cannot use Pro elements in our already made KDP products (that are already being sold) if we stop being Canva Pro members. My understanding is different. If I created the design when I was a paid user, I don't need to change it or stop selling it if I stop Canva Pro; I just can't reuse the Pro elements for other designs if I am no longer a paid member. What do you think about this?

    • @ivyhang5084
      @ivyhang5084  6 месяцев назад

      That is my understanding as well. Because you would have paid for the license already to use that pro element for that specific project.
