  • How to replace both Cam shaft seals and the Crank shaft seal on the Toyota 3.4L V6 5VZ-FE engine. This happens to be a 2004 Tacoma but the process will be the same for the 4Runner or any other Toyota with this engine. If replacing the water pump or timing belt, you pretty much have everything off except for a few bolts and screws, and it wouldn't hurt to go ahead and replace the seals - especially if you know they haven't been replaced recently. As always, thanks for watching!

Thanks for the guidance. Trying to do this on my Tacoma. On BMWs I usually just take a flathead and pierce the middle of the seal and then yank it out. Do this w transmission seals and rest main seals. Works pretty good and I never touch the metal shaft.

You’re welcome! Yes I’m always a little nervous about scratching the shaft or other surface.

Question for you. If doing timing belt and the belt is off and you turn the right cam pulley 360 degrees to realign the timing mark, are you still in time??

Sorry for the delayed reply. As long all your marks on the pulleys line up to the marks on the back plate, and the camshaft marks are lined up you should still be in time.

I just got the same tool as yours but I have already been as deep as the timing belt. But I stopped at the belt. Because it didn’t need changed. I’m the third owner and didn’t know the history of this engine. But looking around and found where a sticker had been I determined that someone had washed it off and didn’t bother to put it back. So I changed the other belts and put it back together. I’ve got the belt kit and plan on changing it next year. That belt looked like it was put on last week so I left it. I’ll buy the seals and have them with the kit for when I do this job.

Yea I mostly changed mine because it came in the water pump kit. I already had it disassembled and had the new one so I went ahead and changed it. It gave a little piece of mind if nothing else. I’m the 3rd owner as well. The original owner left a notebook in the truck with dates and mileage of when anything was changed out or rebuilt.

I’m keeping a notebook as well for future reference of oil changes brakes and other services.
It’s best to do the work as long as you are there.
If one light goes out I change both because they are probably the same age.

Could not remove cam bolts on mine

I know they make a tool to hold the cam pulleys but I did not need them on mine. It’s possible someone tightened them too much also.

Put a socket and extension on the bolt (the one beyond the pulley) and use it as resistance or get a tool for it

    Totally agree...
Got my seals all 3 from Napa.
    Exact size & fit.
    Ask Napa for this brand.
    ALTROM #211 8568 (CAM)
    ALTROM #211 1010 (CRANK)
    Check size to confirm.
    Good seals...
