"I can drink on the job because this is my brother's truck"...priceless and hilarious! And the nut added to the end of the broken bolt was ingenious (whoever did that)! Thanks so much for the video! It helped me so much!
Thank you for this quality repair video! I've got an 02 tundra that coolant (water) is leaking out as fast as I can pour it in (almost). It will lose 1.5 gallons of water in about 15 minutes while driving. I only drive it 2 days a month, but it's an hour and a half each way. Although it wasn't leaking this bad until yesterday, for the past 6 months I could fill it up before I start driving and make the whole trip. Then fill it up 4 days later to drive back. But I guess the bottom fell out yesterday, lol.
Lol. I wasn't sure if I was going to catch some grief from non-drinkers on that one. ;) Truck is still running good, so I must have put all the bolts back in.
You're one of the few that has shown how to properly install the tensioner and shown the proper belt position on the crank in video 2. I've seen many videos where the installer fought the belt after fully installing the tensioner.
Thanks for the instructional. Took me 10 hours thanks to 2 bicycle trips to the parts store and a 1 hour round trip to another Town because the first water pump had a line for an oil cooler and mine doesn't. No leftover parts and your tips were great. Only wishtown knew how to play it in reverse when putting everything back together.
Awesome to hear it was a helpful Refresher and I appreciate your comment. I should probably replace the belt on my 04 Tundra soon as well. Lasted at 90k and I'm at 184k now. Thinking about slacking and seeing how long it will go. Motor is starting to get worn out anyway. Maybe time for a Cummins swap
Got you. I've been thinking about swapping a different engine into this truck. I'm kind of sick of the 3.4 liter. It has no low-end torque and sucks when it paired with the 5-speed. Reliable engine! But no torque. Also mine has low compression on cylinder number 5.
NoNonsenseKnowHow - have you tried the supercharger on the 3.4? I have one on my 01 Tacoma and well I would recommend trying one out. I also had a supercharger on my 98 3.4 Tacoma along with headers and flowmaster exhaust. That thing had some great power, enough for me anyway.
@@EM-lq8rr no I haven't tried one. Was never a big fan because I don't want to have any decreased miles per gallon. I just want more low-end torque. I thought about putting a heavier flywheel on it.
Thanks for not being too pedantic. My '97 4Runner is on it's return trajectory from the moon with 84K left until the magic 500K mark. Your video was right to the point and exactly what I needed to watch before changing out the water pump. Kudos to you sir!

I was at my local Napa store getting brakes for my Tacoma and found some mulehead penetrating oil it’s kinda pricey but every thing I have sprayed it on has came apart with ease I was amazed. Good video!. Just did mine, the swivel on the tensioner bolt was the hardest part. had to use paste to hold the rear bolt in, put the front one in first.

For the water pump I used a gasket dressing (Hylomar Universal Blue) with the metallic gasket that came with the Aisin water pump. Hylomar is a non-setting, non-hardening sealant. Dude it takes a special kinda guy to be into doing this kinda shit. I said fuck that about 7 minutes in! I can see why this costs as much as it does now.
At around 8:03, you mentioned something like: "Provided, if you have a manual trans, no problem - put this thing in gear, brakes, parking brakes." I'm still learning about manual trans, but if I were to put it into 1st, should that crank shaft NOT turn? I had it in first with parking brake, yet when I tried to loosen nut, the crankshaft still turned (It turned maybe 45 degrees before I gave up on that method as I didn't know if I was ruining something and then just went with your starter method). Great video!!! I did my water pump and the time belt when I was putting on the time belt the R-cam shifted to the left a little so I rotated it clockwise back into position would that set the time off
Without seeing exactly what you're talkin about it's hard to give you an accurate answer. The timing marks on the cams should be lined up perfectly with the timing marks on the belt and shields. And then if you rotate the engine 2 turns clockwise, the marks on the cams should be lined back up with the marks on the back shield plates.

I'm considering buying one, but I'm trying to determine if it's from too much road salt (east coast) or is this just how severe the problem is on all Tundras from the early 2000's.
Here's a question for you. My timing belt and water pump were done at 200k, now my car is at 230k and the water pump is leaking. Is it possible to just remove the upper timing cover and fan and pump just to get a new gasket on it? Thanks.
No, the entire timing belt needs to come off to do it properly. Surprised to hear it's leaking. It might not be the gasket also. It could be the internal seal on the pump. Could try throwing some leak stop in your system, but that would kind of be a last resort. Not going to lie though, my pump was recently dripping a little bit and I threw some stuff in there and it's been good since. Which is kind of embarrassing as a mechanic, but I sunk My tundra in the river and I haven't been eager to put much time and money back into it since that escapade.
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow I tried k seal, no luck. Im curious if the shop that did the timing belt didn't bother replacing the pump. The job was done right before I got the car. I'm not a mechanic, and the repair seems daunting to me. Oh well, thanks for the video and reply. Keep up the good work.
Thank you I appreciate all the knowledge I only wish I had a friend like you that can help me do it I live in Fresno anybody here knows how to do this stuff
No problem man! Happy to hear you found the videos helpful. There are a couple other slower paced videos on how to do the timing belts that I've ran into on RUclips. Might be worth it to check one of those out. I did kind of fly through it pretty fast in this video. And I hear you on that. I wish I had a video editing friend. I've been using DaVinci Resolve lately and trying to figure everything out on it is so darn complicated. Thank God for all of the RUclips videos on how to use it
I have to say, thank you for being so to the point, funny and at the same time, thorough enough to get the main point across. Very much appreciated. I replaced my timing belt, water pump and alternator during my work on my 2002 Tundra 3.4L because of your video. Not to mention, you made it even easier because of the way you make things seem simple, because they really are. Really, great easy follow through for folks with a 3.4 Yoda.... Icing on the cake after the job was done for me, was showing the video to my girl and highlighting the part, "that's a shot of my cat's butthole" ruclips.net/video/n9kzzVUmlBM/видео.html
Timing right and I didn't think you could hit valves on non interference engine but I do think my teeth are 193 and saw the I need 191 teeth will that do it also I have been stuck on this for a month and can't figure it out about to pull motor and replace but that shit cost money so
Wish I could make a video cause wasn't doing it when bump started crank bolt off unless somebody tried to start it not knowing belt was off cause it broke off when driving
On my own truck I used the Dayco kit. The more expensive one. I would rather stick with a name brand. I've used the cheap for kits without a problem before though. The best thing would be going with Factory OEM parts from the dealer. But that's a little pricey.
The Amazon link you have isn’t coming back to a Dayco kit. It’s coming up as a DNJ engine components kit. Would you run with this or still recommend finding the Dayco?
The kit that comes up says it dosent fit my 1999 4runner wich has the 3.4L and the 3 belts also don't go to a specific link. Just wana make sure will it still work ?
Omg 😱 that was funny when you ran your cat 🐈 off after he gave you a shot of your cats butt hole. Lol 😆. Great repair video just got a Tacoma with 266000 miles and I don’t know when the belt was changed last.
There are really a lot of variables though. I've done them in as little as three hours and some have taken me seven or eight. It really depends on how smooth things go
Sorry I should have been more clear about that. If you position the breaker bar as shown in the video then you just turn the key to the start position for a Split Second
Terebrate thanks for the subscribe! Glad the video helped you out. You're the second one to ask about part 2 so I'm going to go ahead and get working on editing the footage for that. The only reason I didn't is because part 1 never took off and got many views. I'll post a link to it here when I'm done. Might even get to it today! thanks!
I expect this video (and a part 2) will continue to receive views, as there are a lot of those engines still in service. That is my favorite generation of Tacoma. I'll be doing the timing belt/water pump procedure on my #2 Tacoma (2001 w 193K miles) in the next month or two, and am watching everyone who has a video on it. I found your channel by searching for this subject. Also really enjoyed the videos starring "Shake" the squirrel.
Terebrate thanks for the feedback man, you made my day! I'll get working on that part 2 and I think you're right. But whether it takes off or not, I'm still happy to put out videos that can help people. Thanks for checking out the channel!
Just so you know, the puller in the link doesn't have bolts long enough and you'll have to get some M8 x 1.25 x 4.5" long. The bolts that came with it are way too short. Kinda shitty but whatever
Correction. That bitch don't work at all 😆 I ain't mad. Just a heads up... the link you included for the pulley holder DOES NOT fit a 2001 4runner. There is one on Amazon just not this one
Really? That's crazy. 90k is the way to go in my opinion. Only Vehicles I've seen with recommending at 60k are Hyundai's. I'll have to take a glance at my owners manual though and see what mine says
As a Toyota technician I recommend everyone to NOT work on an engine that has rust & corrosion. This job could of been so much smoother . TOYOTA uses the best hardware. But Rust ruines all

Great video man. Well done and thank you.
Thanks buddy I really appreciate the feedback
Thank you I appreciate all the knowledge I only wish I had a friend like you that can help me do it I live in Fresno anybody here knows how to do this stuff
No problem man! Happy to hear you found the videos helpful. There are a couple other slower paced videos on how to do the timing belts that I've ran into on RUclips. Might be worth it to check one of those out. I did kind of fly through it pretty fast in this video. And I hear you on that. I wish I had a video editing friend. I've been using DaVinci Resolve lately and trying to figure everything out on it is so darn complicated. Thank God for all of the RUclips videos on how to use it
Do you need to replace the crankshaft pulley bolt? I’ve heard your supposed too can’t find one online.
Thanks broski helped a ton
So happy to hear that you found the video useful and helpful. I really appreciate the comment and feedback. thank you
I just need to replace the water pump … do I have to do all that ??
Great video, helped a lot. Thanks!!
Thanks in glad to hear it was helpful!
Great work pal, wish you were in my neighborhood , would hire you to work on my cars!
I did this job exactly way u did it now when go to turn by hand it stops a quarter way around what is wrong ?
It must not be timed properly and a valve is hitting the piston.
You must have missed something? Ive done dozens of these. LMK what you find out. Im very curious.
Did you watch part 2?
Timing right and I didn't think you could hit valves on non interference engine but I do think my teeth are 193 and saw the I need 191 teeth will that do it also I have been stuck on this for a month and can't figure it out about to pull motor and replace but that shit cost money so
Wish I could make a video cause wasn't doing it when bump started crank bolt off unless somebody tried to start it not knowing belt was off cause it broke off when driving
Is it necessary to do a coolant flush after this?
So which kit did you use the $67 dollar one or the $185?
On my own truck I used the Dayco kit. The more expensive one. I would rather stick with a name brand. I've used the cheap for kits without a problem before though. The best thing would be going with Factory OEM parts from the dealer. But that's a little pricey.
You going to tackle the job yourself? If so that's awesome!
NoNonsenseKnowHow
Yes, looking forward to it! I purchased the cheaper one so hope all’s well!
@@daniellebrumley8753 great! Good luck on the job! Lmk how ya make out.
The Amazon link you have isn’t coming back to a Dayco kit. It’s coming up as a DNJ engine components kit. Would you run with this or still recommend finding the Dayco?
Okay thanks for bringing that up to me. I'll look into it. I haven't used a dnj kit before
Here's the kit I used. amzn.to/2vq86M0
The kit that comes up says it dosent fit my 1999 4runner wich has the 3.4L and the 3 belts also don't go to a specific link. Just wana make sure will it still work ?
I don't see a reason why it wouldn't. From what I thought, all 3.4s are the same. Maybe a difference in the water pump or belt. I'm not sure
Good grief man! No nonsense indeed. If you could just make a video teaching people to make there own no nonsense videos. Desperately needed.
Great video, thanks
Glad you liked it!
Omg 😱 that was funny when you ran your cat 🐈 off after he gave you a shot of your cats butt hole. Lol 😆. Great repair video just got a Tacoma with 266000 miles and I don’t know when the belt was changed last.
Helping with the Thumbs up👍
Great video 👌
Six pack of beer & coffee.....check!
How many hours average you figure this would take?
like 4ish to 6ish
There are really a lot of variables though. I've done them in as little as three hours and some have taken me seven or eight. It really depends on how smooth things go
Wut do u mean by tap the starter
Sorry I should have been more clear about that. If you position the breaker bar as shown in the video then you just turn the key to the start position for a Split Second
Awesome video!!
the second video?
A link to it is in the description of this video
Thanks. You cut the bullshit out. Others talk way, Way, WAY TOO MUCH. Thankyou...
Beast video.
In hind sight, did you even need to do this change out? I'm at 200,000. Not sure if it's ever been done. I might pass buying this truck.
Some good tips in this video. I guess Part 2 video (ReAssembly) didn't get made? Subscribed.
Not sure if placing a RUclips link here will work, but this is funny. Cued to 8min9seconds.
ruclips.net/video/xhaIF_3T2aI/видео.htmlm9s
Terebrate yeah it worked! Put me right at 8 minutes and 9 seconds. Funny stuff!
Great Video! No way in Hell I'm doing that! Do it for a sixer? haha
Not too bad of a job once you dig in! And haha no I'll pass on that. ;)
Very helpful
Damn. I gotta do all that for a freakin water pump. Wth
Awesome
Just so you know, the puller in the link doesn't have bolts long enough and you'll have to get some M8 x 1.25 x 4.5" long. The bolts that came with it are way too short. Kinda shitty but whatever
Correction. That bitch don't work at all 😆 I ain't mad. Just a heads up... the link you included for the pulley holder DOES NOT fit a 2001 4runner. There is one on Amazon just not this one
the owners manual says 60,000k for2003
Really? That's crazy. 90k is the way to go in my opinion. Only Vehicles I've seen with recommending at 60k are Hyundai's. I'll have to take a glance at my owners manual though and see what mine says
Thats alot of work for a water pump..😅
As a Toyota technician I recommend everyone to NOT work on an engine that has rust & corrosion. This job could of been so much smoother
. TOYOTA uses the best hardware. But Rust ruines all
That rust is killing me. I’d have to de-rust or change everything.
